  • This is a little Bachmann (Oh no!) N scale GP38-2 that I picked up for a potential project. Compared with the costs from other offerings from Atlas, Life-Like, etc. As the Atlas and Life-Like stuff all seemed to be older releases I wanted something a bit newer. I stumbled across this little Bachmann unit almost by accident as it hadn't shown up in any of my searches likely due to the way the title was typed with parenthesis, etc. So I took a chance and picked up this unit.

VERY NICE PICK UP SHANE! YN1 is one of my favorite CSX paint scheme. Bachmann has really come a long way! With this unit having dcc and sound it mean more and more fun per use! Keep up these fine videos!!

Also eBay keeps changing things around, I hate that than the sellers lie to the buyers so much but eBay doesn't care.
For example there's a guy selling a livestock loading ramp as a N Scale and when you get it, it turns out to be HO so you argue with eBay and seller. They say you can get a refund but who's going to pay me for all the time I wasted.
Than you get a seller that throws all his garbage in the box and sends it to you.
I got one time O Scale, HO Scale than what I did bid on N Scale than garbage.

Shane , I am new to model RR , and am doing N scale due to room available . Enjoy your video's a bunch , and am learning some . My question is , what brand Locomotives do you think is the best , Kato , Atlas or ......... ?? I have 2 Atlas , but due to only being in this hobby 3 months , my experience is very limited . Thanks for all your efforts and content .

Atlas and Kato are always good choices. Intermountain, Broadway limited, and Scaletrains are more expensive but better. As long as you’re buying new then Bachmann is a good choice as well on the lower end of the price scale.

On your ordering on line, it seems like both the East Coast (North of Virginia) and West Coast ( California) sits on the mail.
About these sales taxes, they suck really bad, so you buy anything new they hit up for a huge amount of tax than you sell it and someone else has to pay taxes on that old used vehicle or item than they sell it back to you because your in love with it and pay taxes again. Thats the same thing with used items off eBay, Property Room. This Country loves to tax us and waste money like it grows on trees.
Than I watch the tracking of items and the Post, UPS, and FedEx ships Items right pass my house goes up to 1,000 miles pass me than sit than goes within 50 miles than sends it again the opposite direction and again pass me. It's like a stupid insane video game or slot machine.

Any ideas on stripping paint? This is plastic. Not a good idea to simply sand and repaint.

I believe my friend soaks them in simple green or something. possibly simply isopropyl alcohol. I'll ask him to make sure and get back with you.

Will be interesting to see what turns up: Just test first either on a hidden piece of the model or a spare shell. The problem with spare shell testing is the plastic and or the paint might be different to the target model.
This is really good: we are swapping ideas; that makes t he effort worth-while. Around here we have one historic 'brand' whose paint on some models, not all, resists all efforts. Interesting stuff. I have had some luck removing one brand of acrylic paint using 'Radiant' washing machine detergent mixed as instructions, but the paint was not on more than a day or so. Still worth experimenting when planning repaint. Metho worked on some of the old blue box Athearn of the seventies; still would not guarantee no deterioration of the loco shell; I just didn't notice it at the time. Don't forget eye protection, gloves, and work outside so not to inhale. It is like burning plastic, we don't know what we are releasing.
It sort of leaves one reaching for the peppermints.
      Thanks.

@@petert9749My friend Mariusz says he uses 91% Isopropyl alcohol most of the time and that sometimes it takes a few hours and some a few days soaking.

There you go Shane. See if you can have a spare shell from Bachmann - just in case, and have a go painting it yourself. There are ways around no airbrush. This is a wonderful artform. Thanks to Mariusz. I found I could soak off Tamiya acrylic with Radiant washing powder at instruction strength, meaning I could mess up painting till the cows come home and still start afresh. Searchingly test out on old toy cars; just remember the paint does not adhere too well to Mazac, and protect your lungs. Tamiya sprays beautifully. Enjoy.
      Best wishes.
