@Peter Salucci if I had known about all the *ahem* devils tango scenes I would have never suggested to watch it with my mom but it was too late to back out at that point 🙃
@Me We it’s okay if you don’t like it. I personally like it as a separate show and not as an adaptation because AWAE is different from the original. It’s the same characters but they put their own unique twist on it and I liked it regardless.
I don't know if I'd exactly call Anne With and E (or Bridgerton, for that matter) an historical drama, seeing as it's not very "historically accurate" and is written in a way that feels very modern. I think it works for Anne With an E. Not so much for Bridgerton.
Fun fact: Women didn't have to undo any of their clothing to use the bathroom. Back then, women's underwear was crotchless, so all you had to do was hike up your skirt and either sit over the chamber pot or hold it under your skirt and go.
@@bread6052 Until a woman got her period. Then all practicality got thrown out the window. Historians still aren't sure how women dealt with periods while wearing crotchless underwear.
also when woman would wear those iron crinolines underneath their skirts there was no way for them to sit down so they would basically.... do what they had to do standing up in some corner and then graciously walk away for a servant to clean it. yeah living in these times was.... something else lmao
So the brother scared off all the other guys interested in his sister and left her with the only option she literally was uncomfortable with? A+ sibling right there.
Yeah and the baby sister who never shuts up, the sister who bashes her desire to fall in love and have babies, the mom who withheld crucial information about the birds and the bees... the Bridgertons are proof that wealth and looks never guarantee good familial connection.
He was too spiteful. He at first determine with "my sister should has the best". But when his mother confronted him about responsibility of a noble, he was like "there, that is your respected husband". Like did you not run at least background check on him 😑. Or not to pick the most undesirable man of the season.

He shoulda said Daphne gets all worried about being alone with berbrook and the duke in the garden because she’s worried people will assume they were doing the *DEVILS TANGO*
The most IRRITATING part of this show was when her oldest brother just straight up sells her off to the worst dude he could find then acts like he’s doing daphne a favor lol
@@raileneandlina Same, i felt pity for her when she found out she was pregnant and her aunt forcing her onto different men but what she did to Colin was just. I even had to google whether her and Colin would end up together while i was watching the show because i couldn't bare watching Colin be toyed like that.
What annoys me about the meet cute was that Simon was sooo oblivious to everyone that he couldn’t tell Daphne was obviously running away from Regency era Dudley Dursley. I mean seriously, she kept checking frantically over her shoulder while looking distressed, you could practically hear the jaws theme
Yeah, how full of himself must a guy be to assume that every kind of interaction with him is supposed be a scheme to get with him? Seriously, Simon is written as a total prick and still the authors try to portray him as the desirable rake who just has to be reigned in to become a perfect husband.
Wait are you serious? I didn’t see it like that, its clearly established in the showed that some women would pretend to faint, drop something just to get a guys attention, so due to his status he should get that reaction a lot as well, and since he isn’t interested in finding a wife or dating, of course he would just ignore things like this and assume it’s a ploy, that doesn’t make him a prick, iirc he even hinted at it himself.
I thought it was "kinda dumb" they casted so many minorities when the show takes place in EARLY 1800's ENGLAND (and I'm a minority myself), but the story was engaging enough you stop caring.
@@nahor88 its not supposed to be historically accurate in that way, it's like an alternate timeline. they literally have a scene where they talk about why their society is the way it is
Basically my brothers review of Bridgerton. He kept saying its corny but watched it all the way through anyways and keeps asking if Season 2 of "that boring show" is out yet lol
@@scholaroftheworldalternatehist That's exactly what got my sci-fi and action movie loving dad into watching it, then subsequently dropping it in season 2 due to the lack of devil's tango scenes.
Just wanted to add some insight: The show focuses more on Simon and Daphne due to it being more focused on the first book, which is Daphne’s book. The coming seasons will focus on each book (each Bridgerton).
@@brycemills9773 oh definitely. It’s just like they had other storylines in the first season. But the second season will have a stronger focus on Anthony and his search for a wife.
@@myafield4039 the next book in the series is a really cool story. I've read that one multiple times. I don't think they have casted her yet but the female lead is such an independent badass woman who's definitely got a lot on her shoulders. She is smart and not afraid to speak her mind which I love in a heroine!
Let’s be real: one of the most hilarious things in the show were all those songs played classically with like an orchestra and all, like the first one was thank u next I believe and later bad guy and in my blood as well
My mom watched it and she was so shocked at how explicit it was... And she usually isn't phased by that. I mean, she straight up told me how babies were made when I was 4.
She sounds like the opposite of my grandma. She never explained to my mom what a period was so when my mother first started bleeding at school she panicked.
I really wished daphne gave birth to a girl, so that Simon could have time to accept the fact of being a father before getting an heir.... many people dont understand him
In the books, fam. There are 8 books. One for each Bridgerton sibling. Daphne had 5 children, the eldest three being girls with the two younger ones being boys.
I find it funny how everyone is like “it’s a mix between gossip girl and to all the boys I loved” when the Bridgertons books were published before all that 😂
Exactly! It’s like! The first book( correct me if I’m wrong) was published still in the 90’s. It’ll be more accurate to say that those shows are similar to the Bridgerton novel series, but I mean who’s keeping tabs!? 🤷🏻♀️
I don't see anyone talking about this but I hated Daphne because of how she sexually took advantage of Simon. It was wrong on Simon's part to not tell Daphne that he did not want any children and that he was able to have children (and that it was just a matter of preference) but, that still did not give her the right to do what she did. She could have talked to him but instead she chose to take advantage of him. She made him feel so vulnerable that his stutter came back at that moment. I'm sure if the roles were reversed, there would be a lot more buzz regarding the situation. At first, I didn't have any negative feelings towards her (I didn't really care about her tbh) but that whole situation changed my outlook on her.
Agreed. This is what also put me off from reading the book. It’s almost rape; not fully due to the fact they were already having sex but she forced him to do something that he had no control over and that just did not sit right with me :/
@@brownie8876 she took advantage of him. period. just because it is fiction does not make it okay for you to deny the gravity of her actions. what she did was wrong and ignoring it could potentially harm those who have gone through similar things in real life. so get yo head out ya ass.
I wish more people would talk about this because it's super disgusting. Not to mention triggering! Her actions made her from my most favorite character to least🤢🤢
Daphne was the kind of girl who wanted true love and children and a happily ever after. She wanted to be the perfect girl whom ppl liked, which I think made many ppl hate her character because usually the main female leads are more like Eloise. But I actually found it refreshing to have such a series with a female lead so unlike your usual stereotypical lead, her character in a way was more like the villain you would expect in such shows, someone with the need to be perfect and win rather than someone who is 'not like the other girls' and wants to be employed rather than marry some old fart and waste her life.
Well, actually she just represents the "female ideal" at the time. She wanna get married and have children okey, no one cares about it actually, it's still a personal choice, but the way she has been desperately seeking it, the marriage, the kids, people's eyes... That's the thing that people hate (+ what she did to the guy apparently), not her, the image of women that time, she said it herself "marriage is my duty" or whatever, she represents the "perfect woman" in society's eyes at THAT time, meanwhile Éloïse represents a free woman for our generation, the woman who's not affected by society and all the "show me look at me" things they got there. She's not like all the other female leads (they got the same intention but usually fails at showing it) even tho she's not perfect to what she's supposed to represent either
I loved her character, she wanted to marry good not only because of her but also because of her family. She was looking after her siblings and she was sweet about it too instead of being a strict rude mf
@Unholy Lena well... Marina became a deceiving bitch at some point... XD Actually in her position I'd def would have spilled her secret to my friend (in this case Colin). It was not just jealousy... it was worry, jealousy and at some point anger (bc seriously Marina crossed a line with her words)... so... :)
@@awnikins188 No Marina was a poor girl forced into a bad situation while pregnant and trying to survive. Penelope was a selfish and immature bitch, petty over a crush she had on a boy that doesn't see her that way
@@witchplease9695I disagree. Marina was not forced in her position, she decided to have sex and then didn't think far enough to settle things with her lover before he went to freaking war. They both decided to be oblivious to the possible consequences. And even after it turned out that she was pregnant funny enough Marina still hat options and one of them would have been to be honest to a nice guy who deserved honesty. Also Penelope told Marina that she wasn't fine with Marina deceiving Colin like that. Marina could have respected that and for once she could have been this adult woman she claimed to be when she had her “I’m only honest” talk that in my opinion was more a “I’m going to belittle you into submission” talk. So in my opinion Marina was selfish and immature here and in addition she was a very bad friend to Pen and to Colin. Sure she was afraid but being afraid does not justify everything. Is Penelope fully mature here? No. Because she has not enough self-esteem and healthy selfishness to stand up for herself and it surely would have been better to just tell Colin like she tried before but failed. But in my opinion Marina was unnecessarily cruel and also wrong and forced Penelope's hand here. While Penelope would have accepted a broken heart and stepped aside if Marina would have been honest with Colin.
So I’m reading the Witcher in my living room and my mom sits down and asks if she can watch her show. I was like “no prob” and she throws this thing on. I mean, it's set in 1813 (right?) and even if we ignore that the queen is a person of colour, the ruler of England at that point was George IV, *(no it wasn't past me, it was his father George III - the crazy one from Hamilton, George IV became king in 1820 after his father's death)* so any hope for historical accuracy was out the window the second she appeared on the screen. edit for historical accuracy, ironically
I’m lowkey tired of the emotionally troubled bad boys winning over the sweeter ones. The “good” boys can be just as passionate as the “bad” ones (hell, that makes them even hotter lmao)!

Yeah, one of my friends hasn't stopped talking about it on her Instagram, and keeps posting thristy pics of the duke, like have some pride you're 23 years old
God I wish more of the show was just the fake dating/enemies to lovers situation. The whole marriage/miscommunication situation, the rape scene and the bland "married people who hate each other except when the look at each other" thing afterwards was just... not it.
Honestly my mom’s friend did this with her 19 year old daughter. She trained her to pick an easy college for the purpose of husband hunting. And it actually worked, she found a decent, smart young man. As a 28-year old woman who worked my ass off to get a good job, I now resort to the dumpster fire that is dating apps and somewhat envy her :/
@not your cat of course I agree that Bridgerton books came first, but gossip girl book series deal with teenagers, addiction, broken families and also (SPOILER ALERT) Gossip girl is never revealed in the books so we don't know if she is a part of the main characters.(Unlike Bridgerton tv series, when the secret person is revealed). I also don't know if Cecily von Ziegesar (author of GG) has made a statement that she was inspired by Bridgerton...So if that happened sorry I didn't know... Also with my comment I don't want to insult anyone, I just want to say that because there is a "mystery author" in both series doesn't mean that they are connected, I see them as a lot different series and tv shows.
Everyone is suddenly a history snob. What do you expect from a show that literally played modern songs like Bad Guy? It is a historical fan fiction and people should realize that edit : yall stop being racist. This is FICTION, it's just set in England, has Queen Charlotte, and it's set in a specific time period in England but the similarities to our version of England at that time and this work of fiction stops right there. So what if their version of England had a black duke? Their version of England is clearly different than ours, so let's just appreciate this romance story. You guys need to understand what a historical fan fiction means before commenting. Have a nice day :)
@kebab REMOVER If I was English, this series would get me so mad. I mean, the queen, black, really? Thats historically so inaccurate and insulting at the same time lol
The beginning was good but after the marriage for the main couple, I felt like they forgot the plot and it was just sex, sex, sex and more sex. It was like okay, we get it, you like eachother get back to the plot will you! Lol! I actually was more interested in the story with the main girls older brother and the side chick he had a fling with. They said next season they will focus more on them.
That was only 1 or 2 episodes tho. They caught themselves again after that I would say. I guess they wanted to emphasize on Daphne experiencing sex for the very first time and how oblivious she was to most things even after marriage because nobody ever told her. They just kinda overshot it haha
Reign is one of the worst shows ever. Bridgerton is very obviously not accurate when it comes to history and that‘s okay. But Reign actually is about people who really existed...
It was getting a bit redundant for me after the first 3 times. I was interested in how they planned on rebuilding the town after returning. But hey ya know sex sells.
For me, watching the show I was not interested in Anthony but when I read the BOOK and they introduced KS I was like SOLD! Her character is soo good. I hope they don't screw up and cast her well for S2. Ps to me the most interesting books are because of their love interests tbh Anthony's Francesca's and Benedict's stand out.
So many people get upset when a show isn’t historically accurate or realistic but bro your watching a show made for entertainment not an educational documentary.
They should have not brought up the race relations because : it made no sense. 2: it ruins the idea that we could ever coexist without racial conflict .

yea and like the show cant be historically accurate anyway if the queen is black. there is no way society let black people be royalty during that time in a white-dominant society. maybe they just wanted diversity in the cast but idk...
I think it’s funny that when something becomes popular, people say it’s “overrated.” There is nothing wrong with liking something that a lot of other people like😑😑
@Music & Whistle msk That's not the original meaning, but some people seem to label certain shows "overrated" purely because so many people seem to like and talk about it.
She did not conceive from that encounter. And they skipped ahead at least nine months to the birth of a child, which means we missed at least nine months of conversations during which she might have apologized.

The way Simon did when he told her exactly why it was he "couldn't" give her children? Neither of these two is a model of mature or reasonable behavior.
I knew it was going to be bad the minute I saw them putting a tight laced corset on one of the characters. They wore gowns that didn't require waist cinching because they were gathered under the bust, not at the waist.
What? Bridgerton is a very successful book series and this was a solid adaptation. There is an indiscreet lack of period pieces already, especially ones targeted to the female demographic.
@This Nigerian Loves Drinking Garri LMAO, been there done that. I pretty much already watched all period movies and dramas. I stand by what I said, have a nice day. :)
I’m glad he used the word “weird” because it’s not bad but there is weird and a bit cringe things! But I love it so much still and I’m so exited for S2 tbh! 😭
i really didnt like how they failed to touch upon the rape scene- I would say it is rape, but that's just my opinion. they still want us to root for daphne afterwards. just my thoughts.
OMG yes! I hated that part! I was just yelling at the screen the rest of the season "No, that was rape! This character is an awful person! Netflix should feel like garbage because after the rape was a lot of victim blaming." My husband became increasingly more concerned with what I was watching. " What are you watching!? Who rape who, what? Honey, are you okay? Do I need to make the bad TV go away?"
It was just so uncomfortable to watch. I heard it’s even more descriptive in the first book of the book series. Luckily I knew it was coming before I watched it so it wasn’t so shocking, but like why did they have to leave that part in if they were trying to adapt the book series into a tv show? Couldn’t they have Daphne just confront Simon about it instead? Like the tv show would have still made sense without it 🤷♀️
Yes!!! The weight of her wrongdoing was never even mentioned in the show! I do think though that their entire relationship is so problematic and no argument is ever really solved, they just hop in bed and that's that. I understand that they left it in for the potential pregnancy storyline but it should've been handled better. Their relationship is so off but I guess that's what you get when you marry after knowing the other person for like a month.
Why is no one talking about the trigger warning rape scene, Daphne rapes the duke and yet I've not seen a single person talk about this yet. I haven't watched this video yet so I'm hoping it will different
I hate the show for ruining this prescious characters like that. The family in the books is so lovable. Daphne is so witty and relatable. Anthony is so considerate. The mother is so clever and funny. Simon is stubborn and kind of broken but a relatable and lovable character nontheless. The dialoges are hilarious. Seriously, this show puts the books to shame.
It'd be kind of inaccessible to your average viewer if they straight up used 19th century English. I don't think the show ever set out to be historically accurate (they even use violin version of Ariana Grande), it just wanted to be entertaining. And In that regard I think it did a good job given its success.

Why would they take their dress off to poo? Literally the one practical aspect of wearing a dress is all you have to do is lift it up to go to the toilet...
This whole series gives a middle finger to fashion historians. Women would NEVER take off their dresses to just go and poop, they would just pick up the night bowl and bring it to their crotch (keep in mind, their "undergarments" had a split like hole, so peeing and pooping wasn't a huge problem)
In Southern Spain this is what we do with our "trajes de flamenca" (flamenco dresses) when we go to a "feria"'s (fair) toilet, and it's kind of annoying, ngl xd
I was so over the amount of sex scenes in this show like the first few episodes were soooo good then out of nowhere just a whole bunch of sex scenes every single minute. Then it got so uninteresting after that
Daphne is the most annoying character and what she did to Simon was just wrong. I'm so disappointed because I wanted to like this show so much but the characters... just no
In the series it wasn't as bad plus she didn't know a lot about sex and it was bound to happen on both fronts and he decided to lie to her and it felt very forcing or manipulated to me personally.
Daphne just tried to be so clever and funny that it annoyed me. And Simon didn't want to marry in the first place and yeah he lied but it wasn't as bad as daphne's actions. They were so unbelievably toxic couple that I can't understand how anyone could ship them
''I've never been into historical dramas'' Well good thing there's not a lot of historical in that drama. There were several things that just broke my imersion because they looked so damn modern or badly made (Penelope's dresses haunted the entire season. Only her nightgowns seemed to be made for her)

I would've loved had she went after the Prince regardless if Cressila was going to spread rumors about her first kiss being with the Duke. Daphne clearly didn't look happy during the wedding, but everything's magically fixed because ofc love wins. Why go after a guy who pushed you away, hurt you, says he doesn't want to be married nor bear children, because he stole your first kiss? They fit better as friends and not as husband and wife
Well, actually she married him not only because of how she would've been perceived, I think she was thinking abut her sisters too, about her whole family.
You seem to not understand how Regency society worked. A young, unmarried woman was not allowed to be alone with a man for more than about two minutes. Kissing was absolutely off limits. A girl's virtue was a very big deal, and some of the slightest things could ruin a reputation. After the make-out session in that garden Daphne would have been seen as a loose woman, which would have ruined her sisters' prospects as well as her own. Once the truth was out, even if the rumors remained unconfirmed, the Prince would have withdrawn his attentions. If you got caught allowing a man "liberties" the only thing you could possibly do to save your reputation was marry him--you'd be given a bit of leeway if people believed you were already headed to the altar when you started breaking the rules. Incredibly unfair since men could pretty much play around all they wanted to, but that's how it was.
I sure didn't like her tricking him into procreating when he was clear about that from the start. so uncomfortable. I could see it building to that but hoped it was a misdirect
While I'm not defending what she did because you have a really good point I don't think that he was clear as you say with the matter about having children. He let her think that he wasn't able to provide children but she shouldn't, of course, have done what she did.
Thank you. Someone said it. Clearly the guy wanted to pull out lol. I found that a little disturbing too. I mean she jumps on the man two seconds after finding out how kids are made. God! Woman get a hold of yourself and ask for consent first.
@@sandhya9943 I don't understand why she made such a great decision when she really didn't know to what extent if he was being so deceiving and manipulative of a person. She was willing to assault him basically. It was very extreme act for the amount of hurt she went to through. it was not a 50/50 they both had wronged.
Like she herself said, it is DIFFERENT to say he CAN'T have children than to say he doesn't WANT to have them. He lied to her. She was willing to spend her life with him in the context of "I can't have children" but not in the context of "I don't want Children"

Wait are you serious?
Very much agree.
Yeah she was so wrong for doing that. Honestly I don't really care for her character in the show. Not that I dislike it, but find her rather boring.
But I actually found it refreshing to have such a series with a female lead so unlike your usual stereotypical lead, her character in a way was more like the villain you would expect in such shows, someone with the need to be perfect and win rather than someone who is 'not like the other girls' and wants to be employed rather than marry some old fart and waste her life.
oooh I like and appreciate this paragraph. that makes so much sense
no fr but also she highk r*ped the duke w the whole pregnancy thing so I still rly hate her
Well, actually she just represents the "female ideal" at the time. She's not like all the other female leads (they got the same intention but usually fails at showing it) even tho she's not perfect to what she's supposed to represent either
mm idk still dont like her she annoyed me
I loved her character, she wanted to marry good not only because of her but also because of her family. She was looking after her siblings and she was sweet about it too instead of being a strict rude mf
'Everyone else just kinda sucks' I know you didn't just dismiss Lady Danbury, Head of a Women's Gambling Ring and Traumatized Child Whisperer
And Benedict... and Penelope... and compared to Gossip Girl nobody sucks in Bridgerton imo. :P
@Unholy Lena well... Marina became a deceiving bitch at some point... XD Actually in her position I'd def would have spilled her secret to my friend (in this case Colin). It was not just jealousy... it was worry, jealousy and at some point anger (bc seriously Marina crossed a line with her words)... so... :)
Also queen Eloise she's the best out of the lot along with Benedict

Literally never tell me what to do and where to talk about. You're not paying my internet bill and you are not my parent to tell me what to talk about on the internet. The point is, people will say there was no Black aristocratic figures in Britain at the time. That is inaccurate. You cannot allow inaccurate representations of history to pass to uphold ideas of white status and the notion that Black people have never exceeded a certain societal level throughout history. History is nuanced, there has always been a spectrum. We're (Black people) a race of HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS, second in the world after Asians. To perpetuate ideas that we've collectively only ever existed as servants in the Western world is as repugnant as it is illogical. Millions of people dont share one, unchanged status in their entire lives over centuries.
@@interrobangings There were numerous Black members of the monarchy, aristocrats and elites from British colonies and associated nations who studied in the UK and famously lived there for periods.
One of my all time favourite royal dynasties to talk about and read on is this one from Haiti, the first known Black monarchy outside of Africa after slavery began (the second would probably be the Afro-Bolivian monarchy, which continues today and is the last remaining monarchy in the entire South American continent).
What's so fascinating about Queen Marie-Louise Coidavid and her daughters the princesses, is that in the 1820s they spent a long part of their exile in Clapham, South London! I hated how Daphne only decided on marrying Simon only because she's scared of how she's going to be perceived.
Most of these female characters lack self respect so don’t be shocked
Totally agree! I think the prince was a much better choice and I think she would have been much happier with him.
you are forgetting how a single rumor could have destroyed her whole life and family.......society is not kind to women.....not now not then
I sure didn't like her tricking him into procreating when he was clear about that from the start. so uncomfortable.

I usually skip Daphne’s book since every other one was more entertaining to read. I’ll give the show props for attempting to soften some of the worst parts of her story, but it still is comparably dull. Hopefully the other seasons with the new protagonists will be more entertaining!
This show is basically unwatchable for anyone who likes historical dramas. And I was excited about the mixed cast, but it boggled me how lazy everything was. No attention to detail or historical accuracy in the wardrobe, dialogue, or how the characters behaved.
It’s not supposed to be historically accurate. It’s a fantasy interpretation of the time period. Not supposed to take it so seriously.
@@brookesimpson1180 honestly that's a very privileged thing to say. You can watch and not take it seriously. But as an African descendant, I'm watching a bunch of white people imagine that my people, the ones who jumped off boats to avoid capture, would forgive and dance with their oppressors because... hot white women and fancy outfits? Lolll I get why it's easy for you to watch it, but dont tell anyone not to take it seriously.
And also as a history buff, they even got the architecture wrong! Like even the gardening styles they used were inconsistent. So around, nothing for me to watch
I don't think they were going for historical accuracy
@@Kim-dl2uk Clearly. I'm saying it doesn't have much to offer for fans of historical drama and has more in common with Gray's Anatomy than Pride and Prejudice.
@@mynameisuju I don’t really think it’s that deep...
Alex: Well, your mom had like 8 kids so something was going on.
Me whose grandpa had like 30 kids in a polygamous homestead: Wait, what?
Perfect timing, literally read it before seconds he said it.
@@ramanpreciado2241 me too! 😂
Narrator: "the brighter a lady shines, the faster she may burn"
Meyers: "yeah that's how you find out who the witches are"
I cackled!
