I’m really glad that this video makes it so clear that there’s a BIG difference between the “baby blues”/postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. So much of the time people seem to get the two confused, and most Yates documentaries I’ve seen don’t stress the difference enough, IMHO. While I’ve known many women who experienced postpartum depression, I’ve only known one single woman who suffered from actual postpartum psychosis: she went from being a totally normal, rational woman before giving birth...to having to be wrestled to the ground by numerous cops at gunpoint, after a crazed rampage which involved driving the wrong way on the interstate, before ditching the car and running through multiple lanes of traffic, waving her husband’s gun around while raving incoherently. (Thankfully, she’d left her baby at home when she went on her rampage, because part of her psychosis involved thinking that her baby was in danger, and that she needed to get away from her home in order to draw the threat away and defend her infant.) I met her a year or so after this incident, and you would never in a million years guess that she wasn’t the most normal, suburban soccer mom ever. Scary, scary stuff.
A person who experiences psychosis are that detached from themselves and reality they don’t know they have it or are being psychotic or ‘not normal’ at all they probably just know they don’t feel right
Totaly believe you. I had a neighbor who was schizophrenic and she was very scary when she had crisis, throwing things on the walls of her appartement, thinking she was under attack, yelling, insulting someone that wasn't there... But when she didn't, she was a lovely lady, very polite and well-mannered. You wouldn't have known. It's actually scary that people can't make the difference between baby blues, postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis, tho...
Having read some of the comments I have to say that I also found the husband totally weirded and feel he shares the blame. If he was earning good money working for NASA why live in a mobile home with young children? Why not let the wife buy disposable nappies (diapers) and why did the wife also have to home school the children?? He certainly did not come a cross as genuinely remorseful at losing his 5 children. I think there is more to him than shown. Didn’t take him long to dump his wife and move on?!
If I had 5 kids and they were all murdered by a member of my own family, I would be paranoid, confused and absolutely devastated even talking about it. He doesn't show that.
You are right, the wife was overwhelmed with all the work she has to do. She had no time to rest, poor lady! I understand using washable diapers is by itself a colossal work. When I put my son in a daycare the teacher told me that I have to bring cloth diapers. I had to take them home for washing ( only the cover not the soiled cotton cloths). Even, that was hard. The teacher had to wash the soiled clothes with water then the rest is done by a company. I just can't imagine doing that...that is just crazy! Add to that all the responsibilities that fell on her....few woman would be able to do all that. I know I am incapable.
Yup, witch is exactly why the courts now would question the father first off, he's honestly the one at fault, she TOLD (just emphasising, just making sure you know I'm not arguing or anything!) him that she wasn't okay and he didn't do anything, she tried to reach out to get help like her husband is really just....a piece of work!
This is gross negligence. I have looked after women suffering from postpartum psychosis and it can be horrific. I have looked after women who have suffered in a very similar way to Andrea Yates. It can occur in women who have never had a psychotic episode before or any mental health diagnosis. It doesn’t discriminate. Andrea Yates also had some very strong religious beliefs prior to her postpartum psychosis and often with psychosis those beliefs can become delusional and extreme. They were already extreme so it was never going to be anything but out of control with Andrea Yates. This should of been dealt with with her hospital admissions prior to the horrific event that occurred. This could of been prevented!! And the medical professionals should of seen the seriousness of what was happening. It wasn’t that long ago. That is no excuse. I have been nursing(I’m Australian, so in Australia)for 20 years and Andrea would of been treated from the very start of my career. Without a doubt I say this. Breaks my heart this story and makes my blood boil with anger too.
I think the American Medical Center failed not reporting the children and Teenager Department Authorities about this sick mother, so that her children could have been removed from her and her husband going to a Forster family!
The lightheartedness of rusty considering the circumstances, is shocking. He must have some psychopathic traits himself. Talking about such a horrific crime like he was telling a jolly anecdote during a neighbourhood BBQ!
He's smiling because he is as insane as his wife ! They're not devout Christians ... they are devout anti-Christians who are pretending to be devout Christians !
I believe Rusty Yates was born devoid of compassion & empathy.. But for him to be smiling a lot during his wife's trial is also showing him as limelight hog & seemed to make the most of his 15 minutes of fame & have it last as long as it could..this sickens me right to the bone!!
I suffered from post natal depression and can’t begin to imagine how hard psychosis is. I feel so so sorry for this woman. Being told from a psychiatrist not to have anymore children shows how deeply ill she really was. Rest in peace little angels 💙💙💙💙💗
This is the only case where I actually feel so sorry for the mother she absolutely needed help so desperately and no one was there for her.... That sad excuse for a father is 100% to blame for his children's deaths... I hope one day she can heal from this and can find peace
Thought the same thing. Add drama to it? As if the topic wasn't dramatic enough. American TV crime shows are always dramatic. English shows are good. Theyll spit out the facts, with real pics & (usually) have no dramatic actors recreating the scene. That shit is annoying. As I said, drama for the viewer; as if the topic isn't harrowing enough.
I think it was all the husbands fault, if he had given her the right support and met her needs, she wouldn't have lost her mind, and now she's rotting away and he's making a new family, and laughing about the whole case, what a disgrace of a human being, poor woman
Yea. He got his 3 minutes of ''celebrity'' spotlight. It looks like Rusty has a narcissistic personality. Dangerous individual. I hope that Andrea will find a peace without him.
Rusty has most of the blame here! He laughs while she sits in jail. He kept using her as a brood mare when he knew what it did to her! He probably has 20 children with a new incubator by now!
@It nothing to do with the fact he's a man and she's a 'waman', we'd be saying the same if the genders were reversed. They both have responsibility for what happened.
4 роки тому
M H yeh but the one who killed 5 of her children has a little more responsibility imo
@ For sure. I'm just saying that it's not a gender thing, had Rusty and Andrea's roles been reversed and he'd been severely mentally ill and threatening to harm the kids and Andrea had done nothing to help, people would have been blaming her.
@@meggy0 It IS a gender thing in that post partum psychosis is something only experienced by women after giving birth and known to often become worse with each successive birth, which is why it was recommended to them that she have no more children. But yeah, if he'd been obviously mentally ill and she'd left the kids with him with the same tragic result, she would've been culpable.
@@meggy0she clearly wasn't in the right state of mind to make this decision she literally wasn't mentally fit to have and raise children people lose the custody of their kids in court over way way less than this
The husband is someone who needs a reality check. He was too focused on having too many children without considering how it was affecting her well-being and those of their children. She was admitted to hospital for more than one suicide attempt. What more does a spouse have to know before they start giving her what she needs? Duh!! It's a well known fact that there should be a longer period of time between any birth of a child in order for a woman can recuperate from her carrying a child for 9 mos. and then giving birth. Any future children are also more likely to fair much better when the mother's pregnancies are properly timed. Listening to him, he sounds like he's more than a few bricks short of a load. Self entitlement and and self absorbed and just blatantly selfish.
To kill ones own child is deplorable. To kill 5 is clearly mental illness with serious brainwashing from religion. I do feel sympathy for this lady, I suffered horrific post partum depression however I was the only person I wanted to hurt. Luckily it was caught within the first 2 years of my child’s life. We need more research into postpartum mental health. Because women all around the world suffer with this horrific and severe mental illness!
Watching this many years after and I agree that the husband was very irresponsible, to say the least. How is it possible for a smile to appear on his face after loosing five kids?!
I think he did not see his children like human beings, but as extensions of himself. He may is a narcissist. He only cared about having more children. He surely felt sad to have lost those five, but he quickly was over them and just wanted more. He clearly did not take the doctor's warnings seriously or he thought that his wife could handle it, while she clearly could not. He also surely did not take her seriously if she told him she wanted to harm the children.
Husband is very strange zero emotion but that last doctor who failed to put her back on the correct medication and told her to have happy thoughts should be struck off
Rusty is creepy I mean if he knew she had issues why would he want more children ?!!!! " she would be down for a while " like ur not the one carrying and giving birth ! Just selfish !!! 😡😡 such a tragedy words cant explain
The husband should have been convicted as well, he's the moral author of these crimes....it's unbelievable how narcissistic he is. Postpartum depression is a very serious thing; I'm so sorry for her , such a shame :(
Her husband is a monster! .. How can you smile like that after all that's happened? He's the only responsible of this horrible crime. He made this woman go nuts!! The biggest taboo of our society: motherhood and its toxic burden on women.
Treated like a human incubator and left with all tne pressure and child raising and "things started to go wrong only after her 4th child." Huh go figure
Eerie feeling? Nope. He enrages me. He KNEW she was ill. He was TOLD by the doctors that she was mentally ill and to STOP having babies because that made it worse. He KNEW.
Not one single word about the culpability of those preachers who brainwashed her into believing that Hell existed, and that her children could go there. If Christianity didn't have those viscous, evil elements, then even with their mother's mental illness, those children would all still be alive.
You're not too bright either if you think this woman is a witch and a monster...she was absolutely influenced by what the preacher told her, no question about it! Are suicide bombers not influenced by their religious zealots indoctrination? Yes they are and this vulnerable woman was totally influenced by the preacher's words - dump fat ass...is it too complex for you to realise its not one lone factor but a combination of a particular chronic illness and indoctrination that lead her to make terrible choices...that does not mean 1000's of others would also do it...dump fat ass lol, my god your thick as pig poo
I agree and I have been there in the deepest depression to think theres no other choice but to end it ! I now am glad I didn't end my life but at the depth of it then I easily could have and if there is a god he has a very sick sense of humour to allow the suffering he lets happen in this world!
The problem isn't that God has a sick sense of humour -- you can't blame someone who doesn't exist. The problem is that priests spout lies that affect people in ways the priests refuse to take any responsibility for. Even worse, the priests have somehow fooled most of society into not holding them accountable either. That poor woman thought her children would grow up and commit sins, and therefore be sent to Hell. She believed that if she killed them now, they would be unblemished, so go to Heaven. Given what the priests fooled her into believing, her decision to kill her children was the right thing for a caring mother to do. It isn't God who is sick; it is those who insist that religion promises after-life rewards or punishments, and that the afterlife is vastly more important than real life. When people make decisions based on unreal myths, those decisions can have very bad real-world consequences. The sort of consequences that has hijackers fly planes into skyscrapers.
That's an umbrella term. It does not mean the woman was a believer in the Biblical sense and, obviously she followed a man leading a cult, not Christ the King and Saviour.
I was just about to comment that I thought the husband's apparent amusement throughout the entire retelling of the story is strange and somewhat suspicious but I found that everyone shares this opinion. He is definitely to blame for ignoring and belittling his wife's issues.
Post partum psychosis is a really serious illness and difficult to spot unless you are doctor or so quick to react and call for help asap. I feel so heartbroken while watching this.
If this didn't happen, Noah would be 26 now, John would be 24, Paul would be 22, Luke would be 21, and Mary would be 19. I hope they are all happy now in heaven 💕
Guilty by reason of insanity is absolutely applicable. With all the meds they keep her on, I doubt she wants to remember and escapes. I read she writes most of the day, just writes things down. She was a great student, very intelligent woman. Too bad she married Rusty Yates, her life could have been great without him and kids.
I have worked on a specialist mother and baby unit in a psychiatric hospital and in doing so worked with women who have had postpartum psychosis. It is a horrendous condition but with the right treatment mums can make a full recovery. So sad this poor lady didn't recieve adequate treatment. I guess very little was known about the condition then.
All Rusty's fault!!! If her husband had been a REAL husband and more supportive, helping washing the stupid nappies (even better bought pampers) and had a REAL house with everything a modern day housewife needs. She flipped. (If you can't afford it, then don't have 7 children!)
I still ask myself how the laundry was dried when they lived in that bus. Imagine cotton nappies for two or three children and clothing of 4 to 5 children.
Narcissistic parents are great at wanting children but then you don't exist anymore nor the children. It's complex They say b when you tell them a in parenting. Like I said it's complex. It's easier to raise a child as a single parent because you are already one but with a narcissist you have him or her as an extra child.
The fact he knew she was a danger to be left alone with her children. . Yet he still did it .. hes responsible aswell if not more so as she was not of sound mind ..
This is just absolutely devastating. Those kids could have been saved if someone had just listened to and protected Andrea. Just heartbroken for all 6 of them 💔
Her mom in law was alarmed when she she saw Andre filling up the bathtub and had her hospitalised yet her hubby had no qualms of getting her off her meds and left her alone with the children.
He left her alone with 5 kids knowing that she is sick. He should have gotten help around the house to help her sick wife get better. This husband does not care at all. We never know what was happening in the house. He must be abusing her mentally and emotionally, who knows. Also i think he was waiting for this to happen and then move on and live with his gf.
Well analysed. So true. These self righteous religious people have no respect for women and only want to use woman to stick their body parts in without taking any responsibility. Long ago I told my father I cannot subscribe to religions that teaches men to abuse women.
The best way to honor and get justice for these children - and that's what is important here- is not punishing Andrea or calling her names, but cognizance of the fact that such a disease exists and we need to treat properly SO IT DOESN'T HAPPEN WITH OTHERS.
Listen to what Mr Yates says: "Knowing how much Andrea loved HER children..." instead of "Knowing how nuch Andrea loved OUR children..."mmmm. Makes you think.
He should have been punished too.... That's BS... He knew she was ill and still filled her with more kids.... He KNEW she attempted to take her OWN life! What made him think those babies were safe!?!?
That father Rusty seems soo detached to the reality of his children's fate. He speaks like he's speaking about another families tragedy all together. It's so cold & so bizarre 🤔
I'm so happy she finally got a not guilty verdict and shes getting the help she needs. No human should ever be so sick and not get help that they resort to such drastic actions. I pray she finds peace in her soul!!!
wtf are they talking about...post partum depression is very well known in 2001...i had my first child in 1995...and my doctor give me papers to read about postpartum depression..,.because i was young..and often young people careless about important situation...she explain me...and she also talk about the baby blues...so for people in this documentary to say postpartum depression is not well known in 2001...BS
I thought that was weird too. I have a feeling they meant postpartum psychosis wasn't known that well around that time. PPD also happens a lot when woman already have a history of depressions and suicidal thoughts. My doctors say I'm at a high risk because I have been suffering from depressions for years. But in a weird way I think were I to have a child it might actually help me. It's been my biggest dream ever. But for my child's sake I'm not going to start having children until my depression is a lot less! Hope all was fine with you following the birth!
You're right but she had more post partum psychosis rather then post partum depression. From the later court appearances you could tell that she was on antipsychotic meds as she had put on a lot of weight. Poor Andrea was really not in her right mind and although she knew it was wrong she felt it was the best thing to do. This may not have happened if she had not stopped her meds when she got pregnant again, even though she was advised not to get pregnant.
Ainiewainy you are very wise to do so. I’m having my first, have a history of depressive disorders and am high risk. I waited to be stable for close to 5yrs for my own ideas that would somehow mean it would all be ok. But nothing prepares you for how your hormones change your mind. As long as you have a strong support network, a loving and caring partner, a health team, then go for it. Pregnancy is a strange thing but when your hormones kinda even out it gets easier. Just cause you are at high risk for post natal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be a mother. If anything it means that if you were to get post natal you would be on top of treating it and getting support for it before a woman who has no history of mental health issues. My drs recommended to up my medication but it’s safe during pregnancy so I’m ok with that. Good luck in your journey lovely. Don’t let the idea that having a history of depression should stop you from being a mum or will effect how you will be as a mother. If anything through your treatment you will actually learn a lot about yourself, communication and gain skills that will make you a better parent. Love and light to you dear 💗💕💖

That’s nonsense. When I did my psychiatric nurse education 89-2002 we all knew about post-part I’m psychosis. I nursed a woman who had it. Of course psychiatrists who are competent will know about this
I read a book about this case and I remember it saying how Andrea was doing after all the court cases. She gets a bit better, enough to understand what she has done and then that triggers a worsening of her mental health again. One of the psychiatrists also said she was the sickest person they had ever met. All because her insurance wouldn’t cover anymore time in hospital treating her mental health illness. 😢 Entirely preventable and so so tragic.

I agree! Just as the Devil himself a narcissist.. Husband even enjoyed smiling for the press! It's kinda like ; "Hey I'm so happy all of my children are Dead!" .......
Probably had affairs
It's no short of a miracle the wife had an angel figure for a lawyer who still cares for her like a father.
Bless you, sir!
Does him weeping "Andrea you finally did it!!" imply that he knew what was forthcoming? So he didn't take any precautions to stop it from becoming a reality? She would of no doubt expressed her fears and thoughts to him, even the mother who spent a short time with Andrea and the kids noticed her bazaar behaviours and took her to seek help. Surely he can't be that oblivious?
His cult that prohibits Andrea from seeking psychiatric help is also what protected him
I’m really glad that this video makes it so clear that there’s a BIG difference between the “baby blues”/postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis.
(Thankfully, she’d left her baby at home when she went on her rampage, because part of her psychosis involved thinking that her baby was in danger, and that she needed to get away from her home in order to draw the threat away and defend her infant.)
I met her a year or so after this incident, and you would never in a million years guess that she wasn’t the most normal, suburban soccer mom ever.

Not because he couldn't afford it, but because of religious beliefs
because they were hyper-religious nut cases.
If I had 5 kids and they were all murdered by a member of my own family, I would be paranoid, confused and absolutely devastated even talking about it. He doesn't show that.
@@jon9719 doesn’t show it even one bit. It’s just crazy!
He enrolled in law school are the tragedy but the children were not allowed to go to school. Hypocrite.
So you're telling me that her husband decided to have another child with her after he saw what was happening....sigh
This could have been avoided..
Yup, witch is exactly why the courts now would question the father first off, he's honestly the one at fault, she TOLD (just emphasising, just making sure you know I'm not arguing or anything!) him that she wasn't okay and he didn't do anything, she tried to reach out to get help like her husband is really just....a piece of work!
it's because they are overly religious and would not take contraceptives. they would not even use diapers. Religion over mental health emarayt?
Indeed
I think the American Medical Center failed not reporting the children and Teenager Department Authorities about this sick mother, so that her children could have been removed from her and her husband going to a Forster family!

@It nothing to do with the fact he's a man and she's a 'waman', we'd be saying the same if the genders were reversed. They both have responsibility for what happened.

Not one single word about the culpability of those preachers who brainwashed her into believing that Hell existed, and that her children could go there. If Christianity didn't have those viscous, evil elements, then even with their mother's mental illness, those children would all still be alive.
viscous

Narcissistic parents are great at wanting children but then you don't exist anymore nor the children. It's complex

I thought that was weird too. I have a feeling they meant postpartum psychosis wasn't known that well around that time.

Right?! My grandmother had it in the 60s ffs. Back then it was just baby blues, but they definitely knew what it was.
He does not seem sad at all
I read a book about this case and I remember it saying how Andrea was doing after all the court cases.
