It's one of the little elements that really adds to Chie's romance, and I think it was maybe expanded upon in the Golden version of Persona 4; she's really very insecure about her feminity, and there's a fair bit of self-doubt there. It just makes it more satisfying as you peel those doubts away by building up a strong romantic relationship with it, in my opinion.
