@@BendheimBoards Yeah, I've heard of Santana Do Livramento but never been there. I recently moved to Punta del Diablo that's 40km from the border of Uruguay and Brazil (Chuy). Nicely done, the planer got a bit hungry on the concave, but good recovery.....you may want to do a final plane pass on the stringer after final sanding just to make sure it is not a high spot in the glass, to minimize sanding issues. I did around 750 mostly longboard shapes in Hawaii in the 90s and early 2000s, got the urge to make myself a couple of new ones.
hey!! i really love your videos and i feel like i’ve learned more from watching your videos compared to the ones where they explain what they’re doing since yours is so straight to the point. i’m looking to shape my first board soon and was wondering where you got that tool you use to draw the lines ?
I’m a little late, but I’m loving these videos. I’d love to get into shaping, as I’m jack of all trades kinda guy. Any “beginner essentials kit” you’d recommend, and what grit sandpaper are you using to hand sand the rails? Than you for your time and the videos. Great work!
Hey man, always good to see your videos. Questions for you, where did you learn to shape? Did you learn alone? Do you have any tips or how can I find advice to shape my own? Appreciate mate!
Thanks! I’m mostly self taught and learned through research online and watching videos on UA-cam. I took one class from a shaper as well. Check out the links in my video description for a few helpful references. It would be great to learn under a shaper but I didn’t have that luxury. You can also ask questions at the supply shops you buy your materials from. The more boards you make the more comfortable you become. Good luck!
Tanner, awesome videos man, super helpful. Might be dumb question, but what is/ how does one craft on of the pencil set ups you got? Did you have to make yourself or is there some sort of follow along to DIY one? Either way, keep making content!
There’s no dumb questions man! Here is what I used: Marking gauge: www.foamez.com/product/e-z-marking-gauge/ you can make your own out of scrap foam. Hard to explain but you basically make an L shaped piece of foam and punch the pencil through the top of the upside down L. Hope that helps.
Thanks! My rail mark was 1.25”, deck marks were 2” and 4”, tuck was 1/2”. After that, yes I just keep dividing them in half and can freehand draw the lines by just eyeballing it.
Thanks, I just finished glassing it so I haven’t had a chance to take it out yet. It will be my first single fin shortboard. I’ll be trying it around Newport and Huntington and maybe some sessions Trestles. Excited to try it out!
Hey Tanner, thank you so much for the video and knowledge shared. i saw that the rails style or type you did is 60/40 but im not sure how to measure or get the type of rail done. how do you know the measurements for the rails?
This website talks all about it and gives sample measurements that should help get you started: greenlightsurfsupply.com/pages/surfboard-building-guide-page-2 Good luck!
Thanks for sharing this! A few questions: 1) approximately where did you mark the end of the concave with a pencil, and how much further before you start the vee? 2) do you measure the depth of concave or vee? Thanks!
I just eyeball it. I overlap my single concave into a double and then to a vee at the tail. Depth between 1/8-3/16. Check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/n1bQ6V7oxlY/v-deo.html or these instructions might help: greenlightsurfsupply.com/pages/surfboard-building-guide-page-2
When measuring out your rails, how do you get those numbers and calculations so you know where to draw the lines and such? Additionally, what is that tool called that allows you to draw the lines the same length
Hey Tanner, I've watched your videos and shaped a few boards. I'm still struggling to understand the bottom tuck part, especially when using the greenlight charts because they use tucks like 3/4".. but if I measure and cut off 3/4" that's quite a big chunk and my rail will end up ridiculous 😂 what measurement do you use for the bottom tuck and how does it differ on short/longs
It just depends on how boxy or knifey you want your rails to look. I usually try to keep a 1/4" untouched band around the outline of the board from the first rail mark down to preserve the outline before screening my rails. Yes, 3/4" is a very thick cut, I'd usually start around 1/4" tuck and then go off feel under your arm to make any further adjustments.
The middle of your rail is the apex and the rail bands are the same measurements on the top and bottom of the board. Checkout Greenlight’s website that has lots of measurement info for rail bands.
When drawing your rail marks, what do you do on the tail and nose of the board when the thickness foils out? (It looks like the deck marks you did nose to tail?) And for the tuck, do you stop it a certain distance from the tail in order to maintain the hard bottom edge of the rail? Thanks for these videos, they rock!!!
Thanks man! Great question. You have to gradually taper your rail marks to follow the thickness of the board. So my rail lines on the tail and nose are narrower - especially the nose. I mostly just eyeball it and freehand draw it rather than measuring it on the nose and tail. You are correct about the the tail edge. I mark where I want my hard edge to begin on both sides so my tuck line doesn't sand into it and then just make a gradual transition from the rail to the hard edge.
I followed you on Instagram... I want to get into this because I love surfing and this looks like something I would really enjoy... for foam blanks I was looking at Marko foam, is there another brand I should use?? also do I need the custom electric planer, or could I just find one on amazon and it would work.
Awesome, thanks for the support! I use US Blanks, but Marko foam is just as good. If your worried about cost, I would start with hand sanding for your first board. Its a lot more work, but less room to make mistakes when hand sanding. The WEN planer I have was only $42 from home depot. Its not as good as the others, but I do a low volume of boards and it gets the job done.
@@BendheimBoards right on man! That tail looks wider than 14.5" but its probably just an optical illusion from the outline. You ever put a Vee bottom on a short board?
@@jacobmirels9073 Nose is 14.5" and tail is 15" sorry, should have specified. Yeah, this board I did single concave, to double and vee out the tail. Wanted the vee with the single fin setup.
