How do I still miss this show so desperately? Been disabled by illness for years now … No matter what the week’s other challenges, Saturday afternoon was such a guaranteed happy time for me. Still loving you, Garrison, and the whole APHC crew!
This show was the highlight of my week. I think the loss of of it was a contributing factor to my treatment-resistant clinical depression. You can never go home.
O my! Idk whether this was a “meta-“ moment … or a life curve-creating “senior”one. 🤣🤣🤣 It started when UA-cam notified me tonight that someone had kindly liked my comment. Not remembering exactly what I’d said (I can get a little comment-happy now & again), I clicked over to look, then got called away. Came back, saw the open screen, and started reading … then started _agreeing_ … I guess it was like those times when you walk into a room … and then say, “Why did I come in here?” By the time I got to the end, amazingly, I was in full agreement with every single word!! Came within a gnat’s whisker of liking my own durned comment. Well, friends, you just can’t get much less Wobegonian than *that!* O, the Midwestern shame of it all!! 🤣🤣🤣
I lived in the U.S. from 2011 to 2021 in different states but mostly in the kind and lovely Midwest. One Saturday morning in Wisconsin, I was driving to my local Walmart, and I tuned the radio to NPR. They were broadcasting this show. I listened and laughed so much. Since then, I would wake up every Saturday morning, go to my car, turn on the radio and listen to this show.
This show helped me so many times when I was having panic attacks that I would wish on no one. Gave me something to think about, laugh at, and imagine. I could never express in words how grateful I am for this show.
I still turn on "New From..." most nights when I go sleep or if I suffer from insomnia in the middle of the night. I don't know if GK really did what NPR said (I believe most of them DID) but I've listened to him to the point of memorization, and the aforementioned bit of sexual "creepiness" is definitely there. That doesn't take away from all the years of great writing, brilliant comedy, fantastic music, and iconic entertainment. People are complicated--bad, good, and in between.
Saturdays at 6pm were PHC time here in the UP of michigan. Loved it. A great interlude to my busy life. Stopped and listened and laughed and thought. Joke show was a treat.
I remember recording one of these Joke Shows on a cassette tape to bring to my brother in a nursing home. He loved telling jokes, and the staff loved hearing them. As MS took away the use of his body, he still lifted everyone's spirits. Love you still, Rob.
Don't be so judgemental...I am SURE jmlineb was honest . For one thing, this 'episode' is about Garrison Keilor and, in case you didn't hear, he got attacked from the left for sexual abuse ( something like asides, or putting an arm around a guest) and taken off the air. And Americans were far better off before globalization, while we started the environmental movement, which eventually, 20 years later, got the attention of the UN and the EU( which is FAR MORE realistic in its goals and attaining them than the UN) America soon had job losses while the world leader in pollution has only gotten worse as well as leading in hacking and IP theft. And then there is also Russia ..so there is THAT, for far more than 'one'.
I just found this guy on Pandora they happen to play a clip of him and Paula poundstone telling jokes and I searched for his station and I've been listening to it everyday ever since it's refreshing and heartwarming and empty of any angry rhetoric it's just pure entertainment just Joy
WAY TOO MUCH muzak and not enough jokes...plus many ( such as the rock, chicken and bucket) are just re-hashes of better ones told on previous joke shows...the big down turn in his popularity had to do with Keilor's increasing depression over the years, starting around 2003, when it sometimes was laborious to listen to him, not like the more upbeat 1980s and 90's....I guess it was only natural , it got to be ' a job'....
His father, Dan Dworsky was an All Big Ten linebacker at Michigan in the late 1940s, National Champions in 1947 and 1948, then a hero in Korea. A jet crashed on landing, he TORE OFF THE COWLING with his BARE HANDS , a superhuman feat, and rescued the pilot, badly burning his hands and arms...and made light of his heroism . I knew him, he was an enthusiastic, hail-fellow-well-met sort who, even in his 60s and 70s, was incredibly STRONG.
I have loved this show ever since I heard it for the very first time, and believe it or not it just got better over time. I wish they could keep doing new ones now, but am grateful I can at least hear the reruns now. Thanks!
We're here! Just like old times! Saturday night and we're getting ready to spend it with Garrison and the gang! It's Saturday and the Band is playing! Honey, could you ask for more? ♥ #PHC #appointmentlistening
I’m loving this. I faithfully listened to Prairie Home Companion on MPR when I moved to MN in 1979 from NJ. I copied the whole set of jokes online for the 5th Joke Show 2000. I have used these for years in my Toastmasters Club when I do speeches or ask our TableTopics section (impromptu questions a member has to stand and answer in 2 min). They always get laughs! Our club is TonkaTalkers. Thankyou. Here’s my contribution…why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways? Time flies like an arrow but fruit flies like a banana. 🥰🎄☃️🤣
Back in the '90's I drove trucks Monday through Saturday. On Sundays I would record a P.H.C. off the radio on a 120 min. cassette and play it in the truck all week long as the tape stretched. Kiellor was a genius, and an icon. When I heard he was fired from his own show by NPR after all he did for them, for putting his hand on some feminist's back at a party, I was amazed! NPR sucked before Garrison came along, and now that they've cancelled him and wrecked his life it sucks all the more.
He wrote the Playlist to the best years of my life, & more than earned the right to retire gracefully like the icon he is. Not to have it stolen him by some attention starved nobody looking for her 15 minutes. I'm a 23 year old woman who believes *most women, but her and NPR are a laughable discrase. And who they tried to replace Garrison with?! Insult to injury, that show left with him, funny how they thought they could replace him with some wanna be Ira Glass impersonator. Sad and pathetic. The Folk Sampler, Car Talk, A Prarie Home Companion, Guy Noir, such fond beloved memories.
@@asabove1467 The "replacement" deserves more respect. While he shouldn't be trying so hard to be GK's sptting image (a totally impossible task), he DOES very obviously recognize GK's talent and beloved style. I have trouble faulting him for that.
@@asabove1467 so below. Totally agreed. When I looked into the allegations I held my breath “oh boy, not another one” and then I kept reading, looking for evidence of him causing harm and being a creeper. And there was none. Many women HAVE been harmed!! But not this one, and she ought to be thankful. Anyway, who knows, only she knows what really happened. She has to have it on her conscience. Love Prarie home companion, the news from The Lake and everything. Chris Thele is very talented and fun. Gotta love the guests he brings around. I’m sad that he’s moved on
A LOONNNGGG time ago I had a paper route and went around to collect. (Yes it was THAT LONG AGO!) A little kid came to the door and said, "My mom says she isn't home." My response, "Are you sure that's what she said?" Kid; "Yep that's what she said." "Well tell her I will be back next week." I could just imagine "mom" cringing in the background!
The opening music always made me think that the musicians were only occasionally aware that there were other musicians there playing other instruments.
Real entertainment. What a contrast from the bloated mediocrity of celebrity worship. I hope Garrison makes every Prairie Home Companion available. If they still make em’ like this crew I believe an instinctive hunger for authenticity will be the future hipsters - real ones.
Go to see one of his live shows. It’s beyond “worth it.” If you’re seeking personal interaction, I can’t say… he used to do interactions with fans after some APHC shows (I’m especially remembering Ravinia atm). I’ve seen him live post-APHC, but I’m not sure about availability - the settings sometimes seem more formal. Maybe wait for a future cruise date with him… probably your best bet.
Seeing how badly npr's chosen ones failed at this after GK left with their ham handed liberal saws was a real eye opener. GK was political at times but he was so classy about it.
DO NOT go under the cross brace!!! Your helpers can't dial 911. Walk around. On the other hand caught on video, Jamie will get a lot of views. Please walk around.
I wish that I could find the episode with The Chalk Sisters performing " Hog Wild & Hog Tied" it's avaible now on UA-cam from their great album. But they are an absolute HOOT in live performance!ua-cam.com/video/0FYZTKdTuqQ/v-deo.html

I loved car talk and learned so much from those guys.
The Good 'Ole Days of Radio. Tempus fugit, etc.
Click and Click the Tappert Brothers. Good stuff, too. ❤

I started listening to PHC in 1994.
30 years later, shows like this joke show are perpetually engaging!
I never appreciated the band members when I was listening as I drove. I love them now.
PHC was always the highlight of my week. The joke show was the highlight of my YEAR!!!

Really enjoying.the joke show on UA-cam...it's a wonderful gift...
All new members of the Battlefield Band, I see. We got to see them numerous times back in the 90s. They still sound great!

Thank you.
thank you so much. Miss all of you, , , ,Are you coming back??
Wow, that band!
Truly a lost treasure, Garrison was dealt horribly by the dumbasses and there "me too" movement
The foley production is great.

Has Richard Dworsky retired or does he do his musical thing somewhere else?
Old time radio. You can just look away and still keep up. I'll be back.

Yes, it is this show from Nov 2014: www.prairiehome.org/shows/47777.html

If you receive GK's e-mail/newsletter, he said this is a gift to us for 7 days, beginning April 1, 2020. Hope that helps.

Only 17.7k followers? Ok the world is comeing to an end....
Pandemic couldn't do it. Blm riots, murder hornets, Jan 6, none of them. But only 17.7k followers is surely a sign of the end times.

“How can you talk about God if you DON’T KNOW SHIT?!?!” THAT’S a punchline!!!!
There is a man wearing all black and a pink spot light on his head who keeps walking out onto the stage.
