Compared to your other video, I think this one would have needed a bit more time to really explain the grabbed and restrained conditions, and what that means for someone who is victim of those conditions. - Grabbed, in addition to off-guard and immobilized (can't take move actions), add a DC 5 flat check to make any manipulation action (drinking potion, swapping items, reloading a crossbow, pulling a lever, etc...), or the action is wasted. But you can still attack or cast concentration-spells only as usual, for example. - Restrained is harsher, as the only attack or manipulate action you can do is escape in a grapple scenario. You can still use concentration actions (including spells), but they aren't the most common. But a very important point to discuss when talking about grabbed and restrained, IMHO, is the escape action. It's an attack action, meaning anyone that wants to escape the grapple will not only have to waste at least an action, but it means they'll have to suffer MAP for their consecutive actions. If you're lucky as a grappler, your victim's first escape will fail, so it will have to try another time, but with a -5 this time! And if it critically fail, it can't try again this round! That means your victim will have to either try to escape at the start of its round to have the most chance of escaping, but then he may fail at striking anyone, or it may try to strike first but it risks to get stuck while trying to escape with MAP. That's why grappling is probably one of the best athletics action available in combat, you're really compromising all your victim's option when it works. Also, it is notable to say that when you already have someone grappled, you don't need a free hand afterward, and NOTHING blocks you from grappling multiple foes at once, even if it can be more challenging to pass all checks (hello assurance). I managed to be a player for once recently and played a monk. It's then I really discovered the power of assurance (athletics) as a third action to grapple lower-level ennemies (especially archers and casters) effectively even if you already have the -10 MAP. Still, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the suggestion and the idea! I might do a larger update to the Athletics skill guide and better explain all the details. I appreciate your comment! Don
Excellent comment! - Perhaps you should create your own UA-cam channel, if only for a video on grapple/athletics/etc.? ;) "Also, it is notable to say that when you already have someone grappled, you don't need a free hand afterward" - What? If I grab you with my free hand, then my hand is "busy" with grappling you, right? If you use your hand for whatever else, you should lose the grapple condition? At least "in real life", yes? Maybe the Pf2e rules begs to differ =D
@@SigurdBraathen Oh, I hope I didn't imply that! I have a larger Athletics video that is very much pre-remaster that needs to be updated to the new remaster and that would be a much longer video! These are really just meant to be example Quick tip and it would be pretty hard to cover every use case. Don
@@SigurdBraathenThank you! From the Grapple action: "You can Grapple a target you already have grabbed or restrained without having a hand free." I think the idea is that once you've assured your position, you may use your legs or something to continue holding your foe in place. Probably why the grapple end when you move. As for a channel, I must say the idea do interest me, but for my native language: French. Because as far as I may write decently enough, speaking any intelligible English is absolutely out of reach for me, unfortunately. And honestly, the English speaking space for PF2E is quite diverse enough for the niche it is, ranging from Nonat1s to GUST (glory to the sh*tpost!) to SlyStrategist (who will may make a compendium vid on the athletics as he said) anyway. Also, I ain't showing my mug on YT, I don't have skill/money to make/buy art, and I'd feel like a thief if I went PNGtuber with a stickman like Frizz do, so... Eh. And in the end, UA-cam is already absolutely incapable of showing me most PF2E content creator when I specifically ask for it, shoving me D&D 5E stuff instead. I have a deep respect for Slystrategist and others in the space because they basically fight the algorithm every video and I'm pretty sure it must suck immensely. I'm not sure I have enough passion and time to wrestle with that BS.
Thanks for the comment and the concern! It's just a bit of dental work but unfortunately that's not great for speaking in videos. But yup, everything seems to be going well so far! Don
A Great Gnoll can get Crunch, which gives their bite attack the grapple trait, so you can grapple while having neither hand free. It doesn't have reach, but it is still nice to be able to grapple with something in both hands. I've got a build like this with meteor hammer.
I think I might need to expand this one from a Quick Playthru to a full 20 to 30 minute guide. With Grapple and it's variants plus the mechanics of escape may benefit from a longer video! Thanks for bringing that up! Don
Good video on an often overlooked topic. You defeatedly should have included an escape from a grapple example in the video though. @hectorvivis3651 's suggestions are excellent and an expanded video with those ideas and examples would be appreciated.
haha AoN played you for an absolute sucker coz it didn't easy sleazily didn't tell you about the greatest grapple weapon in great green globe of golarion: 🙇🦀The Scizore of the Crabbe🦀🙇
Thanks for that! I wonder why Paizo did not list that as a trait of the weapon but put it in the description? I pulled out my physical book to check as well! How many other ones don't list the trait in the description? Don

I think it's a great suggestion to expand it and I'll start working on a structure for it.

I have yet to play the remastered rules, but PCs grappling my creatures in 2e is always frustrating.
Thanks for watching and the comment!
It is one of the most frustrating things! It turns your turn to escape checks and nothing else.
