i'm really getting sick of people saying apple computer are overpriced, just compare a macbook air to a similar thin, fast and well build notebook, if you manage to find one. And don't forget that these things are worth quite a lot, even after years. I spent 1900€ (with student discount) for a 27" iMac and sold it for 1150€ after almost 4 years of usage.
i would have prefered if it had sharper corners the shape of the vaio pro 13 and a flat lid with rgb lit keyboard and an oled screen first laptop with oled i would be in love with it then
I love how you're such an honest critic. You're good, your videos aren't too long, you go in depth into everything, and you're blunt. You're not nice to some companies or bias, you're just honest.
I got mine for 1650 refurbished 256GB. It's been running flawless and it's really easy to take with me to college. This laptop is so easy to handle compared to most of my friends thick ass gaming laptops. You're not inclined to buy the brand new one for 2400$. Mine came in without any scratches and I use this thing for hours each day for computer projects/gaming when I have the time. It's also not as hot as people have been saying, and the battery for me lasts around 5-7 hours. Sadly the only problem I've been having is that I don't use my desktop anymore except for backing stuff I don't need on my blade.
Yeah he gave me bags of money to review their products and say they're amazing. No, but seriously, yes I've met him. He's a surprisingly down-to-earth guy. The story I told at the beginning of this video is basically exactly what happened in that meeting in the Razer suite where he also briefed me on Project Christine.
LinusTechTips Did you ask him why their products have an expiry date even though they are stupidly overpriced? Or why did they decide to make make laptops whey they havent figured out how to make mice and keyboards yet?
***** Deathadder has a flawless/superior sensor, great ergonomics and it's cheap. Some programs can arise from extensive use but it's not that expensive unless you like to stomp it then desolder all the LEDs to void your warranty, I wouldn't have problems with it.
I love Linus' quote: It gives off an Apple would make notebooks like this if they were cool vibe... lol... That being said I can't get behind a product that is overpriced and underperforms vs. other laptops on the market just because it's pretty and has a cool screen. I think I'd rather stick with something around the $1700 price point in the ASUS ROG G750JS-DS71 that has the 16GB of ram, a bigger screen (only 1080p), the same GTX 870M, and comes in $700 to $1,000 cheaper. at $1800 you can get an MSI model with an 880M or at the same price level an Asus ROG with 32GB ram 880M and 512GB SSD. Again, the pretty only goes so far.
That ASUS ROG laptop is not a competitor to the Razer Blade. Not only is it 17", but it is 2" thick and TEN pounds. Competitors would be more like the MSI Ghost, Lenovo Y50/40, GIGABYTE P34Gv2, and upcoming ASUS GX500.
Well how is the battery life on the ASUS laptop? and that laptop your recommended is massive. I've seen a kid lug it around campus and I cringe at the thought.
RealOxygen Have you seen the Gigabyte p35v2?!?!? Its $1299 on amazon and it has an i7 4710hq, 8gb ram, and 870m w/6gb of Vram. Hot damn. And its less than an inch thin (0.83" to be exact) so yea... And it's very easy to upgrade, up to 16gb ram (not like you need more), the ability for micro ssd's in raid 0(I think if I'm not mistaken), dvd reader can be removed toolless and can be swapped for any 2.5inch storage drive (comes with adapter). Picking one up this X-mas cannot wait. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LI38OGK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2TC87EJKQMY9O
I've owned several different gaming laptops and nothing comes close to this except the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro with 4k screen. I can't wait to see if they'll release a new model with the GTX 970M. I could do without the touch screen and would be happy with 1080p at a minimum.
As a new blade owner, I'll just say this: This notebook is really freaking great. Its sleek and portable, powerful as well, and once you get your hands on it, it's hard not to fall in love with. Yes, it's expensive, yes you could probably buy a much more powerful desktop for the same price, but when it comes to just notebooks and laptops, this is really up there. Now a few details for any potential buyers: The screen is really beautiful. But the resolution is so high, that it can be a bit overhaul when opening certain windows and such, since they aren't programmed to handle such a high density screen. For example, google chrome looks smaller than usual, a bit messy, but nothing I can't handle, and some game windows, i.e uplay for me, seem rediclously small to the point where it can get hard to read. Tho, this problem can probably be easily fixed by scaling back the res just a bit. In terms of gaming, I myself, was more specifically looking for a sleek and portable laptop for school and can run all those pc games I exclusives (I'll be playing most triple A games on my consoles with friends and such). Now you must now, sweaty hands IS a thing, and I don't exactly recommend playing on your lap either, but it's understanble with it's size, and the wonderful aluminum case that conducts heat a little too well. Other than that, I'm completely pleased with my Razer Blade. I personally think it's a pretty great buy, on the expensive side tho, but it all that saving seems really worth.
Low end graphics card? It is a mobile card, not a low end card. Not everything is even capable of running at that resolution, but what can would look sick.
For demanding games, you're supposed to play at 1600x900. There'd be no need for aliasing and it wont look bad because it's a perfect scale. For everything else such as photo editing or general things, you stay at the native resolution.
***** Razer is an insane ripoff, their quality control is just plain terrible, especially at their price points. Producing cheap knock-offs of Cherry MX switches the moment they don't renew the patent, and they don't even reduce the cost of their keyboards at all. Sure the products work fine, it's just a matter of how long. Ex-user of the Razer Megalodon (RMA'd 3 times), Razer Naga (RMA'd 3 times), and Razer Mamba (Broken out of the box, returned). Only product I would buy from Razer is the Deathadder. Only product that is actually quite good. Otherwise, I'll stick with Corsair for my headset, and Ducky for my keyboard.
Who is this for, for $2,500. That's fucking crazy! You can buy a fully loaded Desktop for a lot less than that. Then, you can buy a decent "gaming" laptop for cheaper that can do everything this can and if you want to game on it use Steam's In-Home Streaming.
Unfortunately there are still people afraid to build their own desktop, and people who are convinced they need to take their main computer with them everywhere. While I'm personally satisfied with my custom-built desktop for gaming at home and my ThinkPad for when I'm not at home, some people are convinced they need to play games no matter where they are.
Kudos Linus for being objective seeing both its positive and negative aspects rather than just bashing Razer like people around me usually do, running around saying "the Razer logo costs more than the product itself". Absolutely agree with everything you said Linus. High price yes, but it is a marvel anyway. I've seen things with the same spec and MUCH lower price, however their size and weight isn't what I call a laptop anymore.
And then people have a boycott in Razer products because Linus' house got burned down, and people at Razer are extremely depressed and they launch a nuclear bomb to the moon and the U.S. go to them and say "MAY I HAVE A FUCKING WORD WITH YOU ON MY YOU LAUNCHED A NUKE TO THE MOON?", then Razer kills everybody that comes to them and the U.S. start a war with them but then everybody else is mad at the U.S. and they fight each other and the next World War begins and they nuke everything and everybody dies. From one. Fucking. Notebook.
I just don't see the point in having a headphone/microphone combo jack on a gaming laptop, there are so fucking few gaming headsets which support it, and if you want a standalone microphone with a good set of headphones you're screwed too! Yes you can manage to find an adapter, but it just seems silly to me to force consumers to buy something like that at this price-point. It also sticks out from your computer and looks absolutely ridiculous.
Electro_Leet "nice cell phone headset" The vast majority of those are shit compared to over-ear headsets when it comes to gaming - heck, anything really. "Razers' Kraken headset" This still relates to my original comment, there are nearly no headset which utilize a combo plug, and I do not wish for my only choice to be a company which is not renowned for being an audiophiles wet dream, nor do I want to buy a new headset when I already have a perfectly good Sennheiser headset. The combo jack is bullshit, there is no real reason to have it instead of a dedicated line-in/line-out configuration.
I am so happy you reviewed this. I have been waiting to see what the new one would bring since I know Min took it as a personal challenge to strive to make it perfect. Now that I see what was built on I'm buying one. Thank you for taking you time to check this out Linus!
Linus, they have 2 versions of the razer blade, its the blade pro and normal blade. The blade pro is more meant for editing while the blade is meant for gaming. The blade pro has 16gb of ram like you wanted.
I have the pro, and it's nice, as long as you are always willing to use an external mouse, the track pad is usable, but multi gesture sticks amd sometimes it does not recognize my swipes or is laggy, the keyboard is great on the gs60 the ram is plentiful and the hard drive space is 1 ssd and 1 hdd, so tons more space for storing games, but I really do not like the track pad.... if you want a slim portable GAMING machine for cheaper(meaning you are using a 360 controller or an external mouse), gs60 is a very nice option
***** I turned up the sensitivity, and it still isn't as nice as i would like, I think it is because my previous laptop was a macPro (i got a good deal, don't judge), and the mac pad is amazing, and works VERY well even without the dedicated buttons or anything...… i just feel that a laptop in 2014 should have a track pad as good as this 6 year old Mac Pro, I still find myself using my MacBook more as my daily driver, and the reason? the track pad

Brandon Shea Why not? Let's say I started a company making cars for example, and I made a car that's exactly like.. let's say a Lamborghini. Do you think Lamborghini wouldn't sue me for that?
Haven't you heard? Apple is pathetic :P That's why I'm curious why they haven't already. Maybe they have gotten their shit together? The only product I have, is Macbook Pro which is what I prefer when working as a product designer. Else Apple products are a waste of money.
I'm surprised they can get away with this but I guess it's only the shape of the unibody that's similar. I haven't seen a better executed "MacBook Pro clone" - if I was switching to Windows, I'd probably save up for this one.
People need to stop arguing about how this doesn't deserve praise. People need to remember that in reviews like this the price is rarely associated and it's all about the quality of the product.
Davissgt actually the macbook pro with about the same price has better specs like 16 gb s of ram better and faster processor only the gpu is worse its 750m so it doesnt get as hot as this thing
But the screen sucks, like really bad. The Macbook pro is not powerful enough to power so many pixels (power-wise). And due to OSX not being well optimized, the screen will flash whenever the gpus change, and the pixel density causes ghosting. This is a really wide known issue with the current Macbook pro.
Get an old MacBook pro 15", thats apart from the gpu side much better; better screen (not only pixels but colors), ethernet port, mini DP, DVD (use it or put in a second drive), upgradable ram and a possibility to run Macintosh very easy (no, hackintosh is not as easy).
stop complaining people! everything is not all about gaming! i am a gamer and use autodesk products for my profession (autocad, 3dmax, etc ) which mostly doesn't run on Mac. if i have an extra cash, i will definitely buy this machine especially it is a windows bases and portable enough to meet clients for freelance works.
I feel at home in this comments section. If you go anywhere else then all you hear is "I built a PC for less money and it is waaaaaay better than this laptop!" I thought I was the only one who appreciated marvelous engineering before I saw the comments on this video. It may not be the most powerful system, but it has revolutionized the industry. So on behalf of the people who appreciate genius engineering and modern design, Thank you Razer.
I have had my eye on this laptop since I first saw this video a couple years ago. The changes that Razor has made really makes me feel like this is the best gaming laptop for a gamer that likes to have a laptop. I am of course talking about the 2016 blade with the GTX 1060 which I have just received.
Harddiskfail Actually Christine was Oil Cooled. Which made it super revolutionary since each module was modular, each was cooled via oil and therefore quiet / silent. An example of why Oil is so slick is in servers, some are going oil cooled to reduce cooling costs and remove the need to air condition server rooms, which saves power and makes computing much more efficient.
SeaJay"Wouldn't call the huge price increase and lock-in to compatible products only" me too. If the price is right and its open sourced connection like PCI Express is then it want mater. But you don't know and I don't know because it isn't out yet its still a concept. Just saying razer better not fuck it up.
I bought this laptop solely on this review and its physical appearance and feel are outstanding! However, the Intel wireless card has several issues and surprisingly it can not handle FarCry 4!!!! For the price point of over $2000 it should be able to at least handle this game on medium settings! The gameplay is so unbearable it makes me want to return this computer. I have trusted most every review Linus has done and I have modeled my exceptional desktop around his reviews and I am as happy as I could be with my build. The Razor Blade 14 just does not live up to the hype and in the future hopefully Linus will run more up to date games on the laptops before giving it his elusive "Editor's Choice Award".
Mike Morgan Far cry 3 and 4 are not very easy games to run. You should have waited like a month for the new blade with a 970m. The 970m is EXTREMELY good and quite close to its desktop version. The 870m can max out bf4 at +-60 fps. Its just far cry4 (ubisoft man...ubisoft)
I could literally replace everything in my current desktop with very high-end parts and still have enough for a nice steak dinner and it wouldn't come close to the price tag of this laptop. That being said, it really is an engineering marvel. To be able to pack all that in a a thin case is truly impressive. I hope they pay there engineers well!
hi Linus it looks like Razer addressed your concern #2. The 2015 now comes with 16GB ram, 970M. It looks like they passed on #3 and #4 (mini display and Ethernet port/adapter) and its unclear whether they addressed #1 (black levels). They might have addressed price with a non-QHD model but then on that one they skimped on RAM. So that model trades your #5 for #2. Tackling 1/4 of your observations isn't too shabby. I can live with a USB to Ethernet adapter but I do wonder what kind of hit I take with that approach.
Your operating system is programmed to automatically use up excess RAM by dedicating it to various processes. If you're playing a game that only uses 2gb of ram, it's only going to use 2gb of ram, end of discussion. The only game I've encountered so far that uses more than 6gb is Star Citizen. Unless you plan on playing several games at once while rendering video and other heavy tasks, 8gb should be more than enough for the next three to six years. By then, you'll be in the market for a new computer anyway.
You have no idea what you are talking about, the reason people complain about the ram is because they need 16 gigs or more! Rendering a picture in blender will use ALL of your ram! Same goes with sony vegas if you are series about it, games may not require 16 gigs of ram right now, but all other processes make up for the ram that isnt used!
DICTATUS - NORDIC ENTERTAINMENT whether 8gb ram is enough is very debatable these days but to imply that 16gb is not more than enough is simply being ridiculous.
My old alienware m17x r4 was great. The speakers were amazing the screen was amazing. Good card in it. Never had problems. But boy do I love having a desktop now. A lot more rewarding when you build it yourself.
My first dislike. I'm a bit disappointed Linus. You've crapped on other products for a lot less than the valid criticisms you raise in this review. Plus that keyboard is freakin' hideous! But that is all subjective I suppose. Razer's products are always vastly overpriced and never that last long. All my friends that bought their super uber omg this is the best gaming mice and keyboards all had them replaced in months. I've been stung before with their products too - curse you Tarantula, worst keyboard ever... There are far, far better bang for buck products that are far more in the sweet-spot area that deserve an Editor's Choice. Surely this sits more in a Money is No Object category.
I can't believe he didn't give the Ducky Shine 3 an editors choice. I mean, seriously. He said it's his most favorite gaming keyboard! I own one and it's fucking amazing, best keyboard I've ever had!
Maybe I got lucky but I've had my naga going on 4 years now and it hasn't given me a single problem. I am NOT a Razer fan and still to this day the Naga is my one n only Razer product. I also disliked this video. How in good conscience could someone give this that high of praise with fixed 8gb of memory at $2200, for that price just buy a teleportation device for your desktop.
I disagree about those products breaking easily, I've owned a black widow for over a year now and I've spilt a whole mug of tea on it as well as a glass of water and it still works perfectly, I even contacted Razer support about it and they told me how to clean it out properly.
***** I have to agree. I've owned the black widow keyboard, naga epic mouse, and kraken headset for over a year now and they all still function as good as the day that I got them, the naga is kind of a pain in the ass to keep clean though.
well, maybe you guys aren't treating them right. My razer mouse and mousepad lasted me 4 years and going strong. Maybe a little dirty, but it's perfectly functional. Anyways, he already said it is way too expensive for his taste, which he pointed out at least 3 times in the video.
Bezel is too big. Razer's hardware is known to be unreliable. It's essentially a riced out Macbook, even down to the internal layout. Would not buy. Would not recommend because of the second point.
I think so, you wouldn't notice differences in response times, as long as it is below 10 ms. And factory specs don't say everything, because my U2412m has a response time of 8 ms according to Dell, but in reality it is faster than many monitors with 6 ms of response time (factory spec).
Kelvin Jongenotter they can also go the other way around. I own a Samsung SA650 panel that claims to have 8ms. In reality its close to 15 and its even worse going grey to grey. that monitor gave me headaches playing games from the ghosting. by far the slowest panel I have bought. but it does have excellent contrast ratios, and a decent price, so I let it go (it was for work)
Considering the colors on an IPS panel are significantly better, and I can't tell the difference between 5ms and 1ms response time at all, I'd chose IPS any day.
Thomas Riddle My laptop has an IPS panel and I can easily notice the difference in the response times of it and the response times of my desktop's TN panel. Granted there could be a number of other things causing this delay I feel, but I believe that it is the panel. I do not have any exact specifics on the laptop's response time and such, but the main reason I cannot play FPS games on my laptop is this delay that I feel. If I had the proper equipment, I would try testing the delay on the panel, but I do not.
What a marvel to look at.. This laptop is simply a beauty and performs really well. As a student right now unfortunately i can't afford it. I'm really hoping ill be able to purchase one in the near future. It would really help me with my design work!
lol an for $200 less you can get the MSI GS70 stealth pro, with 3x 128gb ssd in raid 0, with a 1tb hdd and a GTX 870m GPU with a better, i7 4810 hq CPU.... umm guys wake up razer is fucking shit compared to other brands....
That's a 17" screen vs. a 14" and for many people, 17 inches is simply too big for their liking. The MSI may be a much, much better value than the Razer but some people are willing to pay extra for a more portable machine even of the specs aren't as good.
P3D I have the Aorus 17" laptop, and I love it, although lugging it a pain, simply because there aren't really any bags that can carry it properly. I also filled it with 3TB of SSD, and 32GB of RAM... It's really nice to use! I just wish I had waited for the refresh that they just did a little while ago, I have the first generation one...
The Aorus X3 is coming out soon. The first proper 13 inch competitor to the Razer Blade. I think it is also cheaper but im not sure, we'll have to see how it fairs out against the Blade!
It is undeniable that no other 14inch gaming laptop has as good a form factor with similar specs. Its price is reflective of the specs in a portable neat form factor, something you cant find with other brands which are too heavy to be versatile enough for general use + gaming on the side. Noone will realistically be able to do serious gaming without a power source and noone with a heavy 14 inch laptop will be willing to lug it around all day for word processing and browsing. This is a versatile machine albeit an expensive one. Perfect for my needs
A gaming notebook with Windows 7 would have been worthy of an editors choice award. A gaming notebook with Windows 8, however, makes me want to steer clear. Linus, how much money can I pay you to plug my blog on your next 5 WAN shows???
It's all about form factor. Light weight and being slim is huge, I get it, I bought a powerful but heavy laptop, and I realize now that shelling out a bit more cash for a better form factor is worth it. It's supposed to be a ultra portable gaming machine not a complete desktop replacement. It's something that won't break your back, even if it breaks your wallet.
I never really liked the 3k graphics too much because it made videos in 1080p look bad, so I continuously tried to change the native graphics to 1080p. One day, I turned my blade on and it was native 1080, so if you are a console gamer and 3k looks too good for you you might actually still like this.
so Linus, no complaints about the heat..really? I mean even when not playing you can't hold this laptop in your lap..also, the hand rest is almost bearable..but not quite. It gets quite hot, after a 2h gaming session, due to the heat, the fps drop a lot and the laptop becomes a little stove..on which you can boil a couple pf eggs pretty fast.
I'm surprised he didn't say anything about the battery life dip from last year's model, which is definitely justified by the crazy improvement in hardware and the great form factor. But Linus usually covers everything that there is to cover, so I'm a bit baffled as to why he didn't include any comments about the shortened battery life.
Everyone needs to realise that the high res screen is meant for light use like browsing, work and watching movies. If you want to game the play at 1080p or 900p(which downscales perfectly)
Honestly was expecting it to cost more than that. I could build a much more powerful desktop for that price but it wouldn't include a monitor, keyboard, or mouse and it wouldn't be portable (to an extent). A great machine Razer have produced.
Linus, could you possibly benchmark the system using new games to see how the Blade can handle them at native res? I think since the laptop is so expensive people would like to see beforehand whether they can utilise the QHD display for gaming before they go and pay so much for it. I know the design and features are phenomenal, but the practicality of it is what people will be more concerned about.
I would absolutely buy this without hesitation if it had or was upgrade-able to 16 GB of RAM. Don't really need the discrete graphics either. Everything else screams quality and I love it... When is a 2015 refresh?
Hey Linus, May I suggest that you shoot the B Roll for your videos before you have used and tested the product? Now that your quality is so damn good, it makes dust and other blemishes on the product really apparent. If it ruins the scheduling and production line of your company or isn't feasible for some other reason then feel free to disregard this comment as it's just a niggle I have. Great video by the way!
8GB RAM is more then enough for gaming purposes, although 16GB RAM is obviously better for editing etc.. But right now i'm only using a 4GB RAM laptop and i can still play games and edit videos using Sony Vegas Pro 13 perfectly fine! So 8GB RAM is a great number of RAM, btw 16GB is usually for people hosting servers or game producers who make game updates etc.. or else 8GB RAM for gaming and editing works just fine, if not perfectly. Also one last point before i go, people saying shit on the Razer Blade creators saying the price is not worth it because there is only 8GB RAM and saying they should put 16GB RAM... Well first i will remind u that the Razer Blade is the thinest gaming pc ever created today, it can probably not fit a 16GB RAM without removing vents etc which would indeed heat the pc or make it lag more which makes the 8GB RAM way better for this type of pc and the price is explainable with the way the pc is made and don't forget the Razer Blade has 2 graphic cards which not only enhances the pc graphics but makes it faster and better for gaming (not many gaming pc's have 2 graphic cards) also if you want a 2 graphic card pc with 16GB RAM go check out the Alienware 18 pcs but yet again they are 5,000$ if not more if you are looking for a 16GB RAM computer.. also they weigh a lot and are way thicker so personally i prefer way more a 8GB RAM Razer Blade which weighs way less and is thick af.. thanks for reading and go subscribe to my channel if you play Growtopia or wana support my channel! Im new on UA-cam so don't judge my editing etc :)
It's amazing how they've fit a GTX 870M in that thin and small laptop and a 1800p screen... It's very portable and very powerful. I wish I could afford...
Definitely want the next one to have upgradable RAM, and Ethernet connector. I'm the type of person who commonly installs new OS' on my computer so the Ethernet is a must for me.
Very nice points that you brought up in this review. Ever going to do a showcase of a build or product that is for budget gamers? Not the $1000 price tag that some actually consider budget since compared to high-end PCs seems cheap.
I like how he throws in the XPS 12 in the screen comparison. "It's really good, but... you know. It's not quite a Dell." I'm still totally eyeing that XPS 12 for my next laptop. I'm going to hold out until Broadwell mobile then I'm nabbing one.
This is on the top in my list now, powerful, light and beautifully crafted, but if I were to get one, it would literally clear all my savings, moreover, it doesn't ship to Malaysia.... I'll have to go for cheaper option Sager now. Hope I would able to get one in coming years.
I got one for $1,900 515GB. It was open box ittem, but it looks and works 100% new. The price for the new one is ridiculously high, it is a great laptop but it just shouldn't be for than a $2,000.
I am like Linus opening over 40 tabs, but Not only do I have atleast 20 tabs of chrome open at all times. I also 20-30 tabs of photoshop and illustrator open, this why I use 16 gigs of ram even though I only use like 12 with all that still open.
It's basically perfect, though it needs an ethernet port, SD card reader (even microsd would be fine with me), switching the HDMI port with displayport. And I would like them to implement a physical GPU shut off switch in order to squeeze as much battery life as possible when not doing intensive tasks. As of right now, when it comes to battery life it can't compete with the Macbook pro. Also support for other operating systems would be nice. The last blade 15 was annoying to get the trackpad working correctly under Linux.
I think someone needs to come up with a thinner Ethernet cable so companies can implement them on thinner notebooks. Love this one though but I do agree with your complaints, Linus
Everyone else says this laptop throttles, but Linus says it doesn't. He probably got really lucky with his review unit. People should be wary about this laptop for actually playing games on it.
Hi im Linus Sebastien, I will give this engineering marvel an editors choice award, but im not going to buy it because its too expensive - wtf shouldn't editors choice mean: "this is something I would buy considering all the variables". Money certainly is a variable.
I think it's amazing ...but the 8GB RAM is the deal breaker. :/
Plus it's not upgradable..
The price and spec are the deal breaker.
why is 8gb of ram a deal breaker? it seems fine to me
Scubasteve52655 8gb is not enough considering the price
All there money wasters. 8gb ram is powerful.
at least people can't say "apple's overpriced" anymore.
Apple is overpriced :P
apple is overpriced m8
Apple are overpriced. So are Razer.
i'm really getting sick of people saying apple computer are overpriced, just compare a macbook air to a similar thin, fast and well build notebook, if you manage to find one.
And don't forget that these things are worth quite a lot, even after years.
I spent 1900€ (with student discount) for a 27" iMac and sold it for 1150€ after almost 4 years of usage.
J Bender Only Apple guys can sell an old trash to other fanboys for that much money XD And about the MB Air... I won't even start bashing it.
i would have prefered if it had sharper corners the shape of the vaio pro 13 and a flat lid with rgb lit keyboard and an oled screen first laptop with oled i would be in love with it then
lol 3 years later. it does
I love how you're such an honest critic.
You met The razer CEO ? :D
***** The DeathAdder is one of the best mice on the market, so you can just edit that comment.
***** Or you can google deathaddder build quality and shut up
***** Deathadder has a flawless/superior sensor, great ergonomics and it's cheap. Some programs can arise from extensive use but it's not that expensive unless you like to stomp it then desolder all the LEDs to void your warranty, I wouldn't have problems with it.
its way too fucking expensive for me lol :D
me too, unfortunately. And despite my best efforts, Razer isn't letting me keep this one, so it's back to the XPS 12 for me :(
LinusTechTips How have you been liking your XPS 12?
LinusTechTips You seem disappointed yet you have an i7-X and a Titan. Be glad with what you _do_ have, Linus!
LinusTechTips haha sorry to hear about that. Hopefully they'll change their mind! xD
LinusTechTips damn
Have you seen the price on the damn GT70 Dominator?! Only 1399 for a 4800mq and a 870m! Go look on amazon lol
Now a few details for any potential buyers:
The screen is really beautiful.
What the fuck is the point of a screen with that resolution with that low end of a GPU.
what the fuck...
***** It's a low end card for the resolutions that that screen is pushing.
The gtx 870m is a mobile version of a Gtx 670 or 660ti... Lol
Low end graphics card? It is a mobile card, not a low end card. Not everything is even capable of running at that resolution, but what can would look sick.
Just run games at 1600x900, it would still look great at that screen size and scales perfectly.
For demanding games, you're supposed to play at 1600x900. There'd be no need for aliasing and it wont look bad because it's a perfect scale. For everything else such as photo editing or general things, you stay at the native resolution.
Razer products to gaming is like Beats to audiophiles.
True they are both over priced and mostly based on looks instead of power
FUCK YEAH DUCKY. I HAVE A DUCKY SHINE 3 BLUE LED CHERRY MX BROWN SWITCHES. HIGH FIVE.
***** Ur mad.
Giggity Goebbels Nope
Who is this for, for $2,500. That's fucking crazy! You can buy a fully loaded Desktop for a lot less than that. Then, you can buy a decent "gaming" laptop for cheaper that can do everything this can and if you want to game on it use Steam's In-Home Streaming.
You're missing the point it isn't going to beat a desktop, it is going to be the most portable gaming laptop.
***** The thinkpad gave it away haha
You don't know what the fuck your talking about in home streaming is in beta and works very poorly you have obviously never used it.
Honest Tech Reviews You can have a better gaming laptop than that for that kind of money ($2,400)
So there isn't a disc drive? I at least wanted a built in cup holder :(
Kudos Linus for being objective seeing both its positive and negative aspects rather than just bashing Razer like people around me usually do, running around saying "the Razer logo costs more than the product itself".
Absolutely agree with everything you said Linus. High price yes, but it is a marvel anyway. I've seen things with the same spec and MUCH lower price, however their size and weight isn't what I call a laptop anymore.
Is that a black Macbook Pro 2014 non retina running windows? It appears to be
Perfect... for 3 months until the keys break, the paint comes off, the gpu overheats, it catches fire and burns your house down.
From one. Fucking. Notebook.
That escalated quickly.
Anodized not painted
Regardless, pretty sure both can wear.
Killer146641
cool story bro
a razor 2014 cost $300,000? #linuslambo
No it cost's just over $2000
***** you obviously missed the joke...
ole720 I believe i did!
Or you can wear a nice cell phone headset or Razer's Kraken headset that uses that TRRS plug.
Electro_Leet
"nice cell phone headset"
The vast majority of those are shit compared to over-ear headsets when it comes to gaming - heck, anything really.
"Razers' Kraken headset"
This still relates to my original comment, there are nearly no headset which utilize a combo plug, and I do not wish for my only choice to be a company which is not renowned for being an audiophiles wet dream, nor do I want to buy a new headset when I already have a perfectly good Sennheiser headset.
The combo jack is bullshit, there is no real reason to have it instead of a dedicated line-in/line-out configuration.
USB soundcard ? Its extra money but would work
Sweejit There are adapters for that problem my friend...
Sweejit Just get a USB headset. Or better yet if you can afford a laptop like this, a USB dac and some expensive headphones.
This vs MSI GS60 Ghost? just asking, not like i could buy it lmao
Nicholas Major hard drive count may vary depending on the sku
***** I turned up the sensitivity, and it still isn't as nice as i would like, I think it is because my previous laptop was a macPro (i got a good deal, don't judge), and the mac pad is amazing, and works VERY well even without the dedicated buttons or anything...…
i just feel that a laptop in 2014 should have a track pad as good as this 6 year old Mac Pro, I still find myself using my MacBook more as my daily driver, and the reason? the track pad
what do you think of this pc any changes you think i should make?

How has Apple not sued Razer for this? Apple is known to toss lawsuits around xD
The whole god damn looks and feel of the laptop. It's identical as the Macbook Pro I'm sitting and typing on right now.
Apple: we are suing razer for... Um... Making there laptop too small like the MacBook!
Ok Linus, I've been watching your vids for a while and I think I'm finally going to subscribe. this is a great review. :)
Not being able to upgrade the RAM is instantly a deal breaker for me.
Download more.

Stephen Kadair Stfu like you are original yourself.
I wasn't talking about being original I was talking about directly copying what I posted 5 hours later to reply to the same person.
I would buy a MSI Gaming Laptop rather than this shitty insufficient storage that is available.
...its just a black macbook pro
With much better specs
and thinner
+Rembaa yay finally someone who actually thinks this laptop is fab
Too expensive, the 8gb ram broke the deal.
2016 Blade is here now.
+Steven Monahan But it is more of a higher-than-medium-range laptop than a gaming laptop.
+Steven Monahan ITS NOT THE NEW BLADE FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET IT RIGHT
+Steven Monahan Its actually here now
The 2016 Blade video is here
Did I mı̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̸̨ake you wipe your screen?
Well, seeing that it moves when I scroll and that everyone has seen this at least 10 times before... no you did not.
OCD. Saw it scroll. Still wiped
Lol i just copied and pasted that just to see someone if someone would reply to me saying they have seen it before. Success!
Darshan Davis A little l8 isn't it m8?
Richard Forney Damn str8
Intro was so dramatic lol. Love it!
I have had my eye on this laptop since I first saw this video a couple years ago. The changes that Razor has made really makes me feel like this is the best gaming laptop for a gamer that likes to have a laptop. I am of course talking about the 2016 blade with the GTX 1060 which I have just received.
Maximilian Campbell razer not razor🙂🙃
The PC Gamers Thank you, but why do you feel the need to correct me in such a passive aggressive way.
I want PROJECT CHRISTINE dam it.
SeaJay Cus innovation and shiitt
SeaJay as much as I am a fan of building by own pc. Any thing to make it easier to do and also for it to be liquid cooled is alright with me.
Electro_Leet
...You forgot to mention the fact that Oil heats up, and eventually needs to be replaced. Doing that is a mess.
I'd rather have a MacBook Pro with Retina display. *lolololololol*
Retina is a near-meaningless copyrighted marketing term.
***** OMFG I know but maybe that's the fucking name of the laptop.
You realise that this is like... Almost exactly the same but with a better spec?
***** They copyrighted my EYE? OH NOES!
Mac's last alot longer aswell
Run games with the nvidia gtx 870m card not the Intel one
That was the first thing I checked before I played the game with it. It still could not keep up.
Scale down the resolution then
i must have a lemon I'm playing on medium settings with the nvidia graphics card at 1080p.If a $2000 laptop can not do that i must have a bad card.
Same goes with sony vegas if you are series about it, games may not require 16 gigs of ram right now, but all other processes make up for the ram that isnt used!
word man that's what I say too!!!! People are retarded and don't know how to manage their shit lol
DICTATUS - NORDIC ENTERTAINMENT whether 8gb ram is enough is very debatable these days but to imply that 16gb is not more than enough is simply being ridiculous.
I just got it today at Amazon for 280$ o.O dunno wuts up with dat seller, just insta bought it
Wait who may I ask
I saw one for £10 not telling link because I want it
Julius Gilbert did you get it in the end lol?
I bought one for 500 and it came in perfect condition no scam plus it's a bargain
better than a macbook.
Holy crap you FINALLY got this review out...
Thanks!
Anyways, he already said it is way too expensive for his taste, which he pointed out at least 3 times in the video.
looks like a black macbook pro..
Looks like a laptop to me :P
#rekt
*****
well it IS a laptop. Well, because the fans intake come from the bottom, it is more a notebook than a laptop.
Linus, if you reply to this, I will do absolutely nothing.
i'm with you :')
Will you buy him a brand new fully configured Razer Blade 14 (2014) if he replies?
haloShAdOwSnIpE He'll do absolutely nothing
What!? You made a deal Linus. I Personally don't like it but I was excited to hear you say it's perfect. That wasn't very Canadian of you.
Wow! You get better image quality then all other UA-camrs I watch.
Well Macbooks seem downright affordable compared to this.
Bezel is too big.
Razer's hardware is known to be unreliable.
It's essentially a riced out Macbook, even down to the internal layout.
Would not buy.
Would not recommend because of the second point.
Looks like a black MacBook Pro that's for gaming.
Am I the only one that would prefer the faster response times of a TN panel for gaming over a better looking IPS panel?
The colour shift seems to point that it still is a TN panel. IGZO is only the tft layer. not the actual panel itself.
Alex Stoeff I have a 17" and it's fucking annoying to bring around. Just bought a Lenovo Y50 and it's perfect for my needs.
you dont have a 17" screen that is the gs70 stealth pro slim did you?
P3D I have the Aorus 17" laptop, and I love it, although lugging it a pain, simply because there aren't really any bags that can carry it properly. I also filled it with 3TB of SSD, and 32GB of RAM... It's really nice to use! I just wish I had waited for the refresh that they just did a little while ago, I have the first generation one...
awww dude you could of gotten the Aorus x7 v2 man so much better!!!
Where's the SD Card slot and/or MicroSD Slot? It's Workstation-grade but without a camera SD card slot?
Perfect for my needs
yes there is, asus g551 and g771 rog laptop
Herve 00110001 00111001 Shango00111001 00110100 good specs but no where near as portable
Rahul Lunchman lol i think you are thinking of there bigger counterparts, the g750 family from asus rog, but the the g550 family of rog are portable
A gaming notebook with Windows 7 would have been worthy of an editors choice award. A gaming notebook with Windows 8, however, makes me want to steer clear. Linus, how much money can I pay you to plug my blog on your next 5 WAN shows???
Great review. I love the b roll of the blade, which is at an angle. Keep up the great work :D
I love how you get to the point precisely and concisely.
Subscribed.
LOL.. It has an NVIDIA graphics card, not amd. Do your research.
I mentioned when NOT gaming first...do your research before you post.
I'm surprised he didn't say anything about the battery life dip from last year's model, which is definitely justified by the crazy improvement in hardware and the great form factor. But Linus usually covers everything that there is to cover, so I'm a bit baffled as to why he didn't include any comments about the shortened battery life.
This review is what I have been waiting for before I buy one.
I love my 2014 blade pro and your review of the blade Linus
Linus, could you possibly benchmark the system using new games to see how the Blade can handle them at native res?
I think since the laptop is so expensive people would like to see beforehand whether they can utilise the QHD display for gaming before they go and pay so much for it. I know the design and features are phenomenal, but the practicality of it is what people will be more concerned about.
Its pretty much the dream laptop. It would be pretty sweet for on the go video editing too.
I would absolutely buy this without hesitation if it had or was upgrade-able to 16 GB of RAM. Don't really need the discrete graphics either. Everything else screams quality and I love it... When is a 2015 refresh?
Hey Linus,
May I suggest that you shoot the B Roll for your videos before you have used and tested the product? Now that your quality is so damn good, it makes dust and other blemishes on the product really apparent.
If it ruins the scheduling and production line of your company or isn't feasible for some other reason then feel free to disregard this comment as it's just a niggle I have.
Great video by the way!
Linus with a balanced and full review like that with so few down sides i'd say they should let you have it
I liked the intro. Great Job!
you have a lot of character which makes viewing your videos a very pleasant experience.
You do the most awesome reviews.
It's amazing how they've fit a GTX 870M in that thin and small laptop and a 1800p screen... It's very portable and very powerful. I wish I could afford...
This with a chroma enabled keyboard, the new 980M and more upgradibility will be PERFECT for the next revision of this product.
Completely agree about the Ethernet port but this one looks beautiful.
razer: so if we just change the screen you will call if perfect
linus: yea sure
linus in the review: i want a few things changing FIRSTLY THE SCREEN
I just ordered this laptop based on your recommendation. Thanks Linus, I can't wait for it to show up!
Definitely want the next one to have upgradable RAM, and Ethernet connector. I'm the type of person who commonly installs new OS' on my computer so the Ethernet is a must for me.
Wow thats pretty amazing that ming changed the whole screen for linus o.o
Linus you are missing 1 critical point is there is no SD card on the new Razer Blade 2014, even Macbook Pro can put a full size SD card into it.
Was waiting for this review to decide wether I should go with a macbook or this one...you've helped me a lot linus tnx!
Very nice points that you brought up in this review. Ever going to do a showcase of a build or product that is for budget gamers? Not the $1000 price tag that some actually consider budget since compared to high-end PCs seems cheap.
I like how he throws in the XPS 12 in the screen comparison.
"It's really good, but... you know. It's not quite a Dell."
I'm still totally eyeing that XPS 12 for my next laptop.
Like this review a lot, most of the time the reviews don't talk about the ridiculous price...
I really liked the intro for some reason :)
A Razer Blade is definitely a great option for designers out there that don't want to buy an Apple laptop, but still have a nice and slick design.
