Five-Year-Old Prince William Causes Mischief at Queen’s Birthday Parade (1988) | Royal History

On 11 June 1988, the Royal Family came together for the Queen’s Birthday Parade, known as Trooping the Colour. The weather was not what might have been hoped for on a day in mid-June, and Queen Elizabeth II rode in the carriage with a tartan blanket over her lap. But spirits were high, especially those of five-year-old Prince William. So much so that, when he joined the Queen on the balcony of Buckingham Palace along with his mother and father, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales; his grandfather, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; and his brother, Prince Harry, the Queen had to give him a gentle reminder to behave himself. In recent years, much has been made of the mischievous antics of Prince William’s youngest son, Prince Louis, during his own appearances on the palace balcony. Clearly the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
The first Trooping the Colour of the reign of King Charles III will take place on 17 June 2023, to coincide with the monarch's new, official birthday.
