Google Pixel Fold Review: The THINNEST Foldable Phone Ever!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 чер 2024
- With the launch of the Pixel Fold, Google has become the second major phone manufacturer to release a foldable mobile - and this one is the thinnest ever made. Does this new form factor have any advantages or disadvantages for photographers? Chris Niccolls took the Google Pixel Fold to the streets of Calgary to find out.

Take a drink every time Chris calls the Pixel 7 Pro the "Pixel Pro 7".
oh dang... Im drunk...
honestly, it sounds better his way
I watched the video first, so I decided to take a drink of water instead. Too risky 😂
I must have been drunk while saying it!
I'm hearing vinebooms in my head everytime he says that.
Oh nooo! He‘s reviewing phones now… 😢 What‘s next? Toasters?
If a toaster could take photos, Chris and Jordan would review it!
Just from the dimensions alone, this is the only one of the two foldable phones I've ever been interested in (the other one being Oppo Find N foldable).
nice job! I wish your camera reviews whold be more like this... full of details! instead of always try to squeeze it in a 10 min duration.... really amazing review :)
I'm not sure how I feel about this type of reviews...
1:45, Chris calls a phone a camera...
He's not wrong, but he is missing context 😆
The raw files the native camera app on pixel phones produces are actually really nice. Everything is a composite, even in the normal shooting modes, so motion can add some very strange artifacts, areas with motion are frozen but add extra noise, weird things with dynamic range and shadow noise while exposing normally. I think more sites need to cover these capabilities instead of just comparing jpgs, especially since third party apps (using some other camera api?) can produce pretty poor images, even on the same phone.
I for one am very happy to have different types of devices veing reviewed. And not just traditional cameras
Ignore the hate in the comments. This is a clear example of how 'people don't like change'. The moment someone tries someone new or different, the audience immediately bashes and berates them for it. I can appreciate the fact that you were looking at the phone from a photographer's point of view. Was it the absolute, BEST phone review on UA-cam? No. That doesn't exist. But, I love that you're looking at other products, not solely cameras and camera gear. Keep up the good work.
I was surprised to see a phone review on this channel, but I figured with Chris and Jordan it would be entertaining no matter what. I was happy to see a lot of normal camera review things like handling applied here. Most of the tech channels don't cover smartphone photography this way, good job.
Also these kind of reviews bring more people to the channel too. I have nothing against them reviewing other tech from a photographers perspective. Probably also means we get more videos!
Love how the guys have really kept their momentum going in their move to PP. Great video!
Great video preordered mine
Would love to see your take on Sony Xperia 1 V. Please review this camera centric phone!
Chris is really enjoying his dad humor these days haha
4:15 I do care about the external display 😢 It's one of the key deciding factors in choosing a foldable phone.
0:54 what ? 😂 Reviewing phones is not something I expect from Chris, not complaining but I would prefer camera stuff.
Phones are by far the most popular cameras in the world. Why wouldn't a photography channel review at least the more interesting ones?
@@the_wiki9408 well yeah you have a point but at the same time, it’s not only about the cameras, they talk about the tech and it’s not their best, besides the fact that there are plenty of more interesting subjects about big cameras to talk about then a $1800 phone, and this is my opinion of course.
If you watched the full video, you'd realize that more than half of it was solely about the cameras.
@@ABP8214 I did but still, it’s my opinion dude
I’m stalking mine on the UPS truck right now… should be here in < an hour! LOL. Great video!
Love my z fold 4. Having a tablet at all times is super awesome
A foldable phone I kind of actually want… never thought I’d see the day.
A good deal is a state of mind. I have owned note phones since the note 2. I have always been happy with them. I am really looking forward to seeing the Pixel fold and the Pixel 8 pro. It might be time for a change. Thanks for the video. Good 👍 video.
Reminds me of the ill-fated Microsoft Duo 2. I loved that thing for productivity, but I eventually ditched it because how absolute DOG the cameras were, ESPECIALLY the front one.
After making the switch to flip-style foldables, I can't go back to having a brick in my pocket...although this one did tempt me at first
Which flip-style foldable do you currently use?
@@clonkex Just picked up the Razr+, love it compared to my Z Flip 4
Great review guys!
"Pixel Pro 7" 😭😭
Is there a mode for pictures where BOTH screens are on when unfolded? Use case being I want to take a picture of someone, and I want to see the shot im about to take, but the person being fotographed can see themselves as well.
No doubt in my head I'll buy a foldable, but not that soon...I'll wait a few more generations for the foldable tech improve durability and especially pricing. Thanks early adopters...
I'm missing the Peta-Puns at the beginning of the videos already :(
Gotta have some more on (Peta-) file right?
I'd be interested of what you think of the Sony Xperia 1 V.
Especially cause it doesn't have all the processing as other phones do. I actually switched to the IV from my Samsung and I'm not going back.
Why? Especially for video, I don't have these awful over-sharpened frames with black outlines. And in combination with the Filmic Pro App it's a great B-Cam for my S5 II X.
And all that because it DOESN'T look like shot on a Smartphone (rather a small, entry-level camera).
Would love to see your take on the Sony Xperia 1 V
I just ordered mine. I'm watching this on my fold 5.
1:17 - Where did you get those pants? I'm serious. REI stopped making my favorite pants, and I need a couple more pairs. These look very similar.
How about an annual smartphone comparison?
I suggest everyone consider the One+ Fold coming out next month or September. The specs are incredible in my opinion. Plus it is reported to be $1200.
An Xperia 1 V review by Chris would be interesting to truly see how the cameras are in someone familiar with A series Sony cameras
Honestly, I am super content with the picture quality I get from my Samsung Galaxy s10e. The panorama is it generates are absolutely phenomenal.
If they had the exact same cameras I would... well, I'd still wait to hear about battery life but would most likely switch from my "Pro 7"
The Huawei Mate X3 is an even thinner Foldable, which was introduced and available even before the Pixel Fold.
It's irrelevant in the NA market. Nobody cares about HuaWho here.
@@POVwithRCstay salty
@@bekerashesIt's just the way it is. Salt has nothing to do with it.
Motorola has also offered folding phones for a while
@@POVwithRC And? That changes nothing on the fact, that the Pixel Fold is not "The THINNEST Foldable Phone Ever!".
When did Fingers McNiccols start reviewing phones? That looks really fragile for day to day use.
Good review, nice viewpoints from a photographer/videographer's perspective. Since we all carry our phones with us, it's good to understand what sacrifices we make when we just want to hit the easy button. One easy button that I wish was discussed more are the things that make computational photography interesting, particularly features like portrait mode, magic eraser, long exposure mode, and the editing tools that google offers. Since we are talking about creating photos, these editing/picture making tools are not standard across phone manufacturers and should be given more time to show how these phones can do things that standard cameras may not be able to do as easily.
The magic eraser really does work incredibly. I was impressed
Didn't hear any mention as to the battery life. One vlogger mentioned that it lasted only 4 hours.
Any chance you can confirm that?
It lasts a very long time. At least 24 hours plus of use time. I shot for two and a half days while camping without a recharge.
Tech Niccolls sounds a lot like testicles
Love your shirt more than the phone. lol
Is there a pre installed screen protector on the front screen as well?
I don't believe so. You still get high grade, rugged glass but a screen protector is probably a good idea.
I hope it lasts longer than my Samsung Galaxy Fold, which, due to common quality issues, started falling apart just after the warranty ran out. I'm still paying it off until 2025. I think getting at least 36 months out of a $2000 phone should be expected.
Other than that, I do like the format due to bad eyesight. Cheers!
I do prefer the camera reviews. The camera content is is probably the best currently on the internet.
Regards this review, it must be one of the worst ‘phones I have ever seen above 1k. Perhaps in any category.
Quick question: does the Pixel Fold support dual eSIM dual standby like the Pixel 7 series? Anyone managed to test this?
you can buy alot of camera for that price.
$1799? Still a no from me; I’ll wait til it’s half the price in about half a year and I’ll have to see how good the battery is. Tensor’s battery efficiency sucks
They will never be half price 😅 that would be $900 and most flagship phones are above that brand new. You would have to buy a used older model for that price.
Oh no... going from DPreview to this...
So much hate in the comments. Loved the video. The camera is what I'm interested in with this phone. Pics look very good.
How is this video a month old with no one correcting the factually wrong title?
How does Lightroom work on the Fold ?
Huh?
Why no one don't manufacture foldable phone that has 25:9 screen and when opened there is about 16:9 screen and hinge is horisontally?
Jordan needs to find a way to tell Chris that he looks smushy in every video.
Great review, just it is not the thinnest Foldable Phone Ever. Xiaomi MIX Fold 2 is 5.4mm and 11.2mm.
Tones ? I only noticed one tone shown... white 🤷🏾♂️ 13:29
what shirt do u wear? i like it
I'm a little disappointed in this review. There were few if any cons of this phone. That's unrealistic. I didn't hear you mention about the bezels when you unfold it. I like it and I'm glad that Samsung now has competition
Just make a phone with a replaceable battery. Still using my LG V20, the last premium phone with a user changeable battery. Extra batteries $6.45 from a smartphone repair supplier.
I just want to ask the obvious… Jordan, what’s going on with the audio?
Cmon now.
Having you review smartphones, especially unique ones and focused more on camera would be nice, why not the main one? Iphone, Galaxy Ultra, Xperia 1, OPPO, xiaomi, etc?
I liked the fact that you went in depth on the cameras of this phone, but I wouldn't do a review like this except for very significant phones in the market (which tbf, this is). Let's face facts - phones are cameras these days and they can factor in to certain use cases.
If petapixel were going to do a lot of phone reviews one option could be putting them on a separate channel? Maybe a channel that looks at photo adjacent tech in general (phones, laptops etc)
What an odd choice for a photo camera review
Why? The photo sites would have been smart to be big players in phone reviews years ago.
As usual good work. Not that anyone will get this comment.
I read it and I appreciate it!
Everyone's gonna get one of those! Any day now! Surely!
The title is incorrect, It's not the thinnest foldable phone. The Huawei mate x3 is thinner.
That video looked really off-putting. I was kind of surprised. That was from the rear camera? The dog and fish videos seemed fine but the ones of you talking and walking around seemed very muddled.
Look up on Xiaomi Fold 3. That's the thinnest foldable phone 😍
Capapas jaypee
It’s very awkward when you hold it opened up. Unless all phones go this way and I am forced to get one, I will pass.
White? When I am paying 1700 dollars I want a Fold Gold!
And heaviest foldable
Well, that was unexpected. As to the Fold, best wishes to Google. Samsung has a five gen lead on foldables. It will be hard to break into that.
I just wanted to hear this man speak even im not interested in the product hes talking about lol.
isn't it '7 Pro' and not 'Pro 7' ?
not even gona watch the vid, just gonna say that this isn't the thinnest ever. The Duo is thinner. 'Nough said
if it costs more than 1000 bucks so no
The thinnest Foldable Phone Ever is the Huawei Mate X3 dude
I can't believe it doesn't unfold completely flat. That would be a deal breaker for sure.
PetaPixel's Chris Niccolls reviews a pixel for Peta-Peoples
ooooo
A deep dive with the Sony phones would be cool.
not the thinnest I believe
I‘m so down for you guys reviewing tech in general and not just cameras!
Big deal, go see your shrink
Second major manufacturer???? Please do some basic research.
As I am watching this on my Huawei Mate XS 2 I feel like you are lying.
Why do we keep brutalizing Jordan with ultrawide portraits?
$1800 for a damn phone?! What's that saying? A fool and his money are easily parted? lol. What a waste of money.
Why would anyone buy a google phone?
Seventeen hundrehahahahahahahaha 😂😂😂
Pixel Pro 7 🤣🤣🤣
Super exited about the future of the channel. Not as excited for a phone that folds 😂 Still waiting for an ipad pro that folds though. I guess the road to success is paved by google’s failures.
Huawei folds are better tho
X
"Only the 2nd major manufacturer with a folding phone"
Seriously? You think Google is a bigger phone manufacturer than Huawei or Xiaomi?
In the USA
Well, technically speaking it's not the thinnest foldable ever made - Huawei Mate X3 (which is widely available in Europe) is thinner ;) I had fun watching this video nonetheless!
sorry. not the thinnest. u could say thinnest in the usa! huawei mate x3 and xiaomi mi mix 2 is thinner. commenting from mate x3!
the thinnest foldable ever... except Google got beaten by Xiaomi before Google even announced this thing. And Xiaomi didn't needed such ugly bezels to achieve that...
As far as I remember, this is thinner than Xiaomi Fold 2. Check the specs.
While I appreciate the effort in making a video as informative and exhaustive as this, as well as trying "new" things (albeit a bit out of character), seeing our beloved team post a tech review was a smidge disappointing I have to admit. There are countless smartphone/tech review channels out there already. Please stick to camera gear in the future? Cheers
Google should be ashamed. I thought they can hardware now. This foldable is straight from 2019
