Canons 28-70F2 still blows this out of the water in terms of versatility… woulda been cool to see something similar to that made by sigma. The 28-45 just seems limited, as much as he says he doesn’t like 35mm, at that focal range I would rather strap a 35 1.4 to the camera lol.
Sure the Canon is much more versatile, at a cost! And because of that, hardly anyone can afford it. You're forgetting that this Sigma is mainly targeted to video shooters because of the limited range.
08:36 "...just a hint of onion flavoring..." but can you smell it on your breath afterward? But seriously, folks -- this lens seems to be an amazing technical achievement, but like other commenters, I'm struggling to figure out what the use case would be. It's 'way too big and heavy for a walking-around lens. As to "replacing a bagful of primes"... well, for urban photography, most people are going to want to carry something longer than 45, and possibly wider than 28 as well, so not much being replaced there. The range of view angles -- 65 degrees horizontally for 28mm and 44 degrees for 45mm -- is only 1.5x, not a very big difference, and one that for still photography with a high-megapixel still camera could just as easily be bridged by cropping. That leaves the only sensible uses I can think of being as a "framing zoom" for video (except for the focus breathing, oops) or maybe concert photography where you want a bright aperture and are confined to a fixed position (although you'll still need to carry something longer than 45 for tight shots.) Sigma may have just accomplished the feat of creating a brilliant lens that hardly anybody actually needs...
In the age of high ISO cameras and advanced focus manipulation software, do we still need f/1.8 lenses, or should we focus more on sharpness and weight control?
Having the canon 28-70 f2 Im not a big fan of this focal range. I tend to miss 24mm and more zoom than even 70mm. I think 24-105mm is the best walk about focal range.
28 is not wide enough for me. Had it been a 24-50 F2 I'd have been a lot more interested. That said, it does look like a fantastic lens. I'm just wondering if I can find a place for it seeing as I own the 24-70 Art.
This zoom range is actually just fine for weddings and events for photographers, as most professionals will have at least two bodies on them anyways. This lens weighs exactly the same as the Sony 135mm f1.8 - so here’s my f1.8 trio for professional event coverage: Sony 14mm f1.8 GM Sigma 28-45mm f1.8 DG DN A Sony 135mm f1.8 GM The 28-45/1.8 and 135/1.8 are exactly the same weight and basically the same length as well. It balances well if you wear these two lenses on your double harness.

Yes, this is the brother of the 18-35 APS-C. Which cropped would be around a 28-54mm. So this one is bit shorter on the long end but nothing crazy. It also stays at f1.8 which is crazy thinking this is full frame. Such a beast of a lens. A 28 f1.8, 35 1.8 and 50 1.8 bag of primes in one lens. Yeah, it’s big and heavy, but it replaces 3 lenses.
@@IJAY2509 True, but would be nice if they make native versions for Sony E and Fuji X mount. That lens is perfect for the Sony FX30 & A6700 and Fuji X-H2s, X-T5 and XS20
The sony 24-50 f2.8 seems like a better size, better weight, better focal range in exchange for 1 stop of aperture. For event work/reportage I feel like I'd still go with that if I wanted to use a zoom. It's a cool product from Sigma though.
Panasonic GH7, nice, finally looking real good, same image quality as a G9M2, was hoping for 8k sensor but oh well, 4k480p global shutter sensor will have to suffice.
OMG I wish Sigma would jump into Z Fullframe. This is exactly what I'd need. Currently I jump between 24mm, 35mm and 50mm 1.8 for my indoor stuff to get most of the ambient light. This lens would just be perfect to replace all that.

I mean, an f/1.8 is great, but it's such a limited zoom range. My 24-70 is wider and longer, but a little slower. I'd be more excited about this if it was like... 24-70 or a 20-55 even. I DO love that it's internal zooming. I hate external zooming lenses. It's my biggest complaint about my Sigma 24-70 2.8 v1.
That Sigma is quite big and heavy lens. I think Canon RF 28-70/2,0 L USM is more versatile. No one will see the difference between F1.8 and F2.0 to be honest and there is 45mm vs 70mm difference.. But still nice innovation.
I think you have loca in your contact lenses. I don't see any loca on my computer screen.... AND for the love of Pete ! Cat's eye is caused by the mis alignment of the front and rear elements, not to mention each piece of glass is curved toward the edges to add insult to injury. This is physics and cannot be controlled, nor is it a defect of any lens. Even a pancake will exhibit this. Example, it's almost like deducting points from a marathon runner for being out of breath at the end of a race. It is par for the course. So PLEASE stop talking about CATS EYE !!! BTW love you guys !
I don't think Sigma made a good decision here. Between raising the aperture and giving up focal length, a bit more range would have been the better choice. Of course the other options left are only 2.0 and 2.8 (and nothing in between) while 2.0 is still very close, so a 24-50 2.0 would be an option or a 20-50 2.8, but this just seems odd.
I like the concept of a bright zoom, but the focal range makes no sense. Not wide enough for vlogging or landscapes, and not long enough for portraiture or wildlife. Just seems kind of stuck in an awkward range that unfortunately makes it functionally useless for me.
4:05 @PetaPixel Is this guy the artist of the mural he’s standing in front of by chance? If not, im gonna guess he’s a visiting alien from another start system living on earth only recently. 🩵 That lens is super heavy, with Motion Picture Capture I use a Sony A7IV & 24mm f1.4, when i want 35mm i put it in APS-C mode, if i want it closer still, i can activate the Clear Image Zoom in 5 stages to get it all the way to equivalent 50mm. One lens on a super versatile camera body is for me a game changer feature for SONY. Further, my 20-70 ends up being a 20-150 f4. A 70-200 becomes 70-400. If you’re into stills this is degradation in quality, but for a fixed 8MP image running 24-60fps in 10bit 4:2:2 color, this really minimized my Lens collection. None of the camera y/t channels really ever sold this Versatility component of the A7III/IV and the A7Rseries, something which the A7S at 12mp can never do, yet it is the supposed go to VIDEO CAMERA from Sony. Great to see you two always these 10 plus years, you have both taught me a lot. Great job Jordan and Chris, Calgary sure is more interesting that greater Manitoba in my experience : Relativity. 🩵
The only reason this lens could be interesting is if it had excellent optics (which the 24-35 kind of had), but since this is not the case, the zoom range is not really exciting, very limiting.. so a good prime should always be favored IMHO
Why everyone forgets about the SIGMA 50-100mm f/1.8? Lol I am blown away by the price, honestly expected to see it around $2k. My only complaint about this review is that it was a missed opportunity to do it at night to showcase it's low light capabilities.
Chris, how can you not groove with 35mm? Use your feet man and you can use it as a 28mm or a 50mm. A 50mm, however, can't do as well as a 35mm in that sort of game.
Yeah its a pretty cool lens but I don't see that many reason to take that over a 24-70 2.8 with the Iso and IBIS in modern cameras you can easily compensate for the 1 stop
Congratulations for that technical achievement, but ... basically a 24-120/4 is better both for landscape as well as portraits since it goes wider on the one hand and has a bigger aperture diameter at a more suitable focal length for the latter. And intimate environmental portraiture and street doesn't work with this intimitading behemoth of a lens either. Curious if I'll ever see one of these out in the wild.
What a useless lens. 28 isnt wide enough for most uses and 45 isnt long enough for most uses. Feels like Sigma just did this to be able to brag about having the first f/1.8 zoom 😂

& terms of cost ;-)
The color-man is fantastic! 4:06
Too big for street, too restrictive for landscapes and scenery, but probably great for low light event work. Not a lens for me but very cool!
redacted is latin for iphone 15 pro FYI
In the age of high ISO cameras and advanced focus manipulation software, do we still need f/1.8 lenses, or should we focus more on sharpness and weight control?
Having the canon 28-70 f2 Im not a big fan of this focal range. I tend to miss 24mm and more zoom than even 70mm. I think 24-105mm is the best walk about focal range.
I love my 24-105 but F4 isnt enough for every situation
just get the 35-150 Tamron, job done. brilliant lens.
28 is not wide enough for me. Had it been a 24-50 F2 I'd have been a lot more interested. That said, it does look like a fantastic lens. I'm just wondering if I can find a place for it seeing as I own the 24-70 Art.
I would have bought a zoom starting at 24mm and at least f2.0. 28mm wide end is just not enough for me. Maybe that will come next.
This zoom range is actually just fine for weddings and events for photographers, as most professionals will have at least two bodies on them anyways. This lens weighs exactly the same as the Sony 135mm f1.8 - so here’s my f1.8 trio for professional event coverage:
Sony 14mm f1.8 GM
Sigma 28-45mm f1.8 DG DN A
Sony 135mm f1.8 GM
The 28-45/1.8 and 135/1.8 are exactly the same weight and basically the same length as well. It balances well if you wear these two lenses on your double harness.
Fantastic video!
it is time for sigma to make a modern 200-500mm f2.8 now
I’m sorry but I think the plana as a unit of measurement isn’t going to stick. I think the noct is still the standard to which all lenses should be measured against.
The Plena is an optical standard. The best 135mm lens ever made.
@@macmac6479 You totally missed the point, but it's fine. The Noct is a curiosity, most people know the lens. The Plena?! Who the fck cares for this lens?!
The teaspoon is totally not gonna stick, everyone knows the Tablespoon is the ultimate unit.
@@Benjamin_JehneI do!
ooof those picnic table shots are making me seasick.
Seriously, just get a 35mm f1.4. What are you going to do with a 1.6x zoom range you can't do with some minor creativity and a prime lens?
Make something larger or smaller in the frame without changing the relative position to other objects via parallax changes?
@@PippetWhippet Nobody needs to do that to make a good photo. And we aren't talking about a large change here. 28 vs 35 vs 45mm are small changes. Very easily worked around.
First thing in my Mind. Is this the FF brother of the legendary sigma 18-35 f1.8 APSC lense :D ?
The FF brother of the 18-35 is the already existing 24-35 f/2. This is some sort of mid ground. It's an interesting lens, but it's not the 2nd gen 24-35 f/2 I was hoping for.
Sigma: "the USP of our lens is f1.8 covering 3 focal ranges"
le Chris * proceeds to shoot a crane at f16 and a model at f4 * 🙃
Absolutely because those shots worked better outside of f/1.8. You got some samples in there at 1.8 too.
Yes, was my idea too. Has M43 bokeh... They did this too in the past with new cameras that were still under embargo. Very excited about a new GH7!
I call it a stack up of primes.
At that time, Sigma 18-35/1.8 was sharper than many primes so I started my Sigma F1.8 purchase
omg I hope they will redesign 18-35 for the APSC users !!!!
would be nice, but de 18-35 is still a blast even in 2024
@@IJAY2509 True, but would be nice if they make native versions for Sony E and Fuji X mount. That lens is perfect for the Sony FX30 & A6700 and Fuji X-H2s, X-T5 and XS20
@@Edwin-- thats true
they dont really push crop sensor development atm
What does it need though? It seems like a really good lens still
7:59 Oh, so I can’t take a picture of the eclipsed sun with my iPhone but Chris can shoot the unobstructed sun on a full-frame sensor at F/1.8‽ smh.
Impressive lens but I doubt it would replace primes for just walking around and taking shots. That this is massive!
Unrelated to the lens, do you update the “redacted” when the embargo lifts?
Next - a 46-50 f/1.2 that weighs 2 kilos.
The sony 24-50 f2.8 seems like a better size, better weight, better focal range in exchange for 1 stop of aperture. For event work/reportage I feel like I'd still go with that if I wanted to use a zoom.
It's a cool product from Sigma though.
Was looking to see the portrait result with flash at f1.8 but turn out to be f5.6.....😂😂
it will be interesting to compare this one with the rumoured 24-70 F2.0 from Sony.
if that Sony lens is 500g, I'll be the first one to buy.
Panasonic GH7, nice, finally looking real good, same image quality as a G9M2, was hoping for 8k sensor but oh well, 4k480p global shutter sensor will have to suffice.
I currently use the 18-35 and it is an absolute gem, there is very little of similar quality in the dedicated apsc field.
I know it would have been huge and expensive, but i was really hoping for an 18-35/1.8 to pair with my tamron 35-150/2.0-2.8.
OMG I wish Sigma would jump into Z Fullframe. This is exactly what I'd need. Currently I jump between 24mm, 35mm and 50mm 1.8 for my indoor stuff to get most of the ambient light. This lens would just be perfect to replace all that.
Ask Nikon to get out of the way
@@PhotoVideoTechOz I guess it's both sides needing to agree on something. Worked with Tamron, which gave us the lovely 35-150mm. Hopefully will happen with Sigma too. At least for APS-C we're already there.
Anything you can shoot with this zoom you can shoot with 35/1.8. It's a useless lens.
@@USGrant21st sure. who cares about the 50% more field of view between 28 and 45mm anyway. leaving alone all the differences in style and usage that come with certain focal lengths. nobody cares. useless lens. period.
@@trueatfalse lol. you are making stuff up. The difference between 28 and 35 is 1.25x and between 35 and 45 is 1.28x -- miniscule, no matter how you slice it.
Shot on GH7 for sure, background too in focus to be full frame and no notation about what camera was used, which is intentional of course.
Stopped focal length garbage
I agree, it´s way cheaper than I tought it would be
I mean outside of the new auto focus performance, the 18-35 is a better buy so you have a universal lens and not one tied to a single system.
yesssssss
I was looking for a 50mm 1.8, but this is better. Though it's like 600 more than I wanted to spend lol worth it tho.
Keeping in mind I'm going a lot for video graphy, and little bit photo as well. Often on events as well
Now release a f/1.4 zoom for aps-c.
Who'd want to lug that around. It's a 35mm lens with a bit either side. Want 45mm - crop, want wider PTGUI.
Reminds me my Sigma 18-35 F1.8 and 50 -100 F1.8. Sigma keep on bring out great lenses.
That Sigma is quite big and heavy lens. I think Canon RF 28-70/2,0 L USM is more versatile. No one will see the difference between F1.8 and F2.0 to be honest and there is 45mm vs 70mm difference.. But still nice innovation.
Cmon guys. What did you film it on? Great video.
BTW love you guys !
it's pretty cool. but it's BARELY a zoom at that point. 24-50 would be pushing it but 28-45 is useless compared to a prime 35mm.
Just like everyone have said it's 35mm with added abilities to make 2 step backward or forward 😂
24-50mm is probably much better
It’s not a house it’s a church……..it’s called rooting out evil……it was in Vancouver but was TOO controversial….
That lens is super heavy, with Motion Picture Capture I use a Sony A7IV & 24mm f1.4, when i want 35mm i put it in APS-C mode, if i want it closer still, i can activate the Clear Image Zoom in 5 stages to get it all the way to equivalent 50mm.
Some guys just follow what everyone else is doing, and then there are some who put the world together in interesting and unique ways.
This video is days old so they probably won't see this but @3:51 this is one of Chris' best shots and it's 35mm just sayin
Why everyone forgets about the SIGMA 50-100mm f/1.8? Lol
I am blown away by the price, honestly expected to see it around $2k. My only complaint about this review is that it was a missed opportunity to do it at night to showcase it's low light capabilities.
because that is a crop lens.
I don't see the point in such a huge lens with a very small zoom range. I'd take 24mm + 50mm primes over this any day.
Sigma, where is the L mount Foveon camera to go with this lens?! We're WAITING!
F F S, I WANT my 18-35/1.8 native mount for ASP-C! Argh!
it may be the brightest, but I'll pass, as it's close to 1kg
What a useless lens. 28 isnt wide enough for most uses and 45 isnt long enough for most uses. Feels like Sigma just did this to be able to brag about having the first f/1.8 zoom 😂
but like... why not get 35 1.4 from sigma? sharper to the edge judging on sample images.
The lens can be lighter and smaller if sigma make the zoom extend design, but its just less "pro" i think.
Gerald Undone thought that $1350 was a bit on the high side 😊
Gotta say those Nikon greens always stand out to me.
Nikon Z is open mount why does sigma refuse to release lenses on it
No it isn’t. Nikon has said it will allow lenses that complement the range.
@@PhotoVideoTechOz didn’t know that thanks for clarifying! That’s a bummer.
I hope it was not recorded with the GH7, too much magenta, looks like more the G9II.
28 mm would be acceptable, but 45mm? What would you shoot with 45 mm?
We just can't have a 24-70mm f1.8 :/ I don't care how big it is!
Another Giant Titanic lenses by Sigma
Any idea if it will ever be available in Nikon Z mount?
This should be as much of a hit as the 18-35. Shame they only care about E + L Mount
How’s the noise ? Sigma makes too much noise when shooting video at least it used to be lol
If only it is a 24-50 f1.8, then sigma would rule the world
I'm distracted by the fact that this is probably shot on GH7. Scrutinizing auto focus and dynamic range.. 😂
okay, this makes me wanna sell my Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8
