While this is not a lens available to me (Canon shooter), I am contemplating the same idea of "is this useful?" Initially I was like, "wow, a really limited zoom range." Then I got to thinking about when I use a standard zoom lens, most my shots are in the range this lens can shoot, 28-40mm. At least half of my shots at any event will be in that range with a 24-70mm. Not to mention the 18-35mm F1.8 they made for crops is a similar field of view after crop factor is considered, and that lens was very popular (granted part of the reason for that may have been the lack of options for a fast, constant aperture standard zoom for crops). I agree, I probably couldn't use a lens like this, but there certainly will be those that will find it a dream come true.
I was literally just complaining about how I wanted Sigma to update their old 24-35 F2 lens for mirrorless cameras a few weeks ago after the launch of their second 24-70 f2.8 lens for mirrorless. Thank you very much Sigma for blowing away my expectations!
They need to update their 50-150 apsc lens for mirrorless. It’ll be even better with Canon RF-S in the race now. Canon makes great apsc bodies for sports!
This zoom range is actually just fine for weddings and events for photographers, as most professionals will have at least two bodies on them anyways. It balances well if you wear these two lenses on your double harness.
The problem is that for the same price, you can get the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-2.8. An important note: in the 35-45mm range, the Tamron still maintains an f/2.0 aperture (it only goes to f/2.2 at 50mm). It is 5mm longer and 215g heavier than the Sigma. Additionally, the Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0 is coming, which according to rumors, will be half the size, half the weight, and half the price of the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8. And Sony is about to release Sony 24-70mm f/2.0 for the price (again, rumors) between this Sigma and Canon 28-70mm f/2.0. While it is the brightest full-frame zoom ever made, it doesn't offer enough in terms of range, size, and weight to be truly competitive with what's already available on the market, especially considering what's about to be released (such as the aforementioned Tamron 25-50mm f/2.0).
question is what about optical quality of those mentioned lenses? I have seen one review with direct comparisons of Sigma 28-45 to Sony GM 50, 35 and 24 primes and it was consistently against all 3 primes slightly sharper in centre but softer on edges. Also Sigma had less CA than GM primes. 24-70 have better range, but also a whole list of problems. Beginning with worse sharpness and contrast, way worse CA (especially that new Sigma 24-70) and also dust gathering extending tube. So 24-70 f/2 is possibly comming soon, it sounds awesome on paper, but it also would have to be a significant improvement over 24-70 f/2.8 GM II in sharpness, contrast and CA. And even though 25-50mm f/2 also sounds great on paper, we wont know if it really is as good as it sounds until its released, tested and results compared. Sigma 28-45 is a lens full of compromises. Less versatile focal range, large size and more weight for superior image quality, more light gathering and possible subject separation and better weather sealing. IMO it would pair really well with 70-200 GM II. Both with its focal range and its weight and dimensions. Only if they both had same filter size too...
I totally agree with you. It sounds nice, but in the end, the size and weight make it impractical. I'm with you, a 35mm lens will do with newer high pixel cameras. It's a lens that is fixing a problem or void that doesn't exist.
I’m sure this is a great lens for those of us in need of it, but it also kind of shows how great the Lumix Leica DG Summilux 10-25 and 25-50 f1.7 zoom lenses are. I know these are MFT lenses, but on scale these are superb in range and light gathering capabilities.
Hats off to Sigma. Creating some sensational glass lately, and competition at the premium end is good for everyone as consumers, especially when they're keeping prices very reasonable. That said, this is the focal length I personally would use for street, landscape etc and it's very bulky for those kind of 'walkaround' scenarios. I'd probably just go for the 35mm f1.8 Sony which is cheap, small and excellent. Horses for courses though... Credit for being creative in their lens design.
In the age of high ISO cameras and advanced focus manipulation software, do we still need f/1.8 lenses, or should we focus more on sharpness and weight control?
28 is not wide enough for me. Had it been a 24-50 F2 I'd have been a lot more interested. That said, it does look like a fantastic lens. I'm just wondering if I can find a place for it seeing as I own the 24-70 Art.
This lens is impressive. I have been considering the lens since I have read the rumors. However, I really can't see myself using this lens over the Tamron 35-150 in any application that I could think of.
This lens gives me added flexibility for shooting my UA-cam channel videos. I don’t use a studio setup so I’m constantly using different positions, settings and backgrounds in our scuba shop so the 28-45 range works out well.
Definitely if your standing next to the stage for concerts in super dark and crappy lit small venues this lens seems like it is perfect for that scenario for sure!
Having the canon 28-70 f2 Im not a big fan of this focal range. I tend to miss 24mm and more zoom than even 70mm. I think 24-105mm is the best walk about focal range.
08:36 "...just a hint of onion flavoring..." but can you smell it on your breath afterward? But seriously, folks -- this lens seems to be an amazing technical achievement, but like other commenters, I'm struggling to figure out what the use case would be. It's 'way too big and heavy for a walking-around lens. As to "replacing a bagful of primes"... well, for urban photography, most people are going to want to carry something longer than 45, and possibly wider than 28 as well, so not much being replaced there. The range of view angles -- 65 degrees horizontally for 28mm and 44 degrees for 45mm -- is only 1.5x, not a very big difference, and one that for still photography with a high-megapixel still camera could just as easily be bridged by cropping. That leaves the only sensible uses I can think of being as a "framing zoom" for video (except for the focus breathing, oops) or maybe concert photography where you want a bright aperture and are confined to a fixed position (although you'll still need to carry something longer than 45 for tight shots.) Sigma may have just accomplished the feat of creating a brilliant lens that hardly anybody actually needs...
The sony 24-50 f2.8 seems like a better size, better weight, better focal range in exchange for 1 stop of aperture. For event work/reportage I feel like I'd still go with that if I wanted to use a zoom. It's a cool product from Sigma though.
Sigma really doing amazing things this year with their releases. I really hope they start making lenses for GFX and provide more affordable, quality lenses. Would be really amazing to see what they can come up with.

I’m sorry but I think the plana as a unit of measurement isn’t going to stick. I think the noct is still the standard to which all lenses should be measured against.
@@macmac6479 You totally missed the point, but it's fine. The Noct is a curiosity, most people know the lens. The Plena?! Who the fck cares for this lens?!
As an event shooter, I was contemplating the idea of this lens even though I can't get one (Canon shooter). The wide aperture is great, the zoom range feels a little limited. However, I do tell people all the time my most used FL range with my standard zoom is 28-40mm. At least 50% of my shots take place in that range at an event. So for me, that other 50% is still too important for this lens to be useful; maybe if it were more like 80% of my shots, but 50% is too much to give up. But, you mention the 18-35mm F1.8, which has a very similar field of view to this lens after the crop factor is considered (as it was a crop only lens). That lens was very popular. Granted, that could have been from the lack of other options for that kind of lens (fast, constant aperture standard zoom with a wide enough angle of view to be useful indoors), but I am just saying that I bet they see a similar level of success with this lens. I was really hoping for an update to the 18-35mm and 50-100mm F1.8 lenses from Sigma in mirrorless mounts. Currently adapt an 18-35mm to an R7 and it's friggin great.
@@IJAY2509 True, but would be nice if they make native versions for Sony E and Fuji X mount. That lens is perfect for the Sony FX30 & A6700 and Fuji X-H2s, X-T5 and XS20
Canons 28-70F2 still blows this out of the water in terms of versatility… woulda been cool to see something similar to that made by sigma. The 28-45 just seems limited, as much as he says he doesn’t like 35mm, at that focal range I would rather strap a 35 1.4 to the camera lol.
Sure the Canon is much more versatile, at a cost! And because of that, hardly anyone can afford it. You're forgetting that this Sigma is mainly targeted to video shooters because of the limited range.
With new Lenses getting nearly Perfect (Sony 24-70 GM2 or Sigma M2) i think it's a great idea that manifacturers getting into new lensdesigns and new Zoomranges. But for now I will just watch you guys testing the awesome Fullframe stuff till I can jump up to Fullframe.
Panasonic GH7, nice, finally looking real good, same image quality as a G9M2, was hoping for 8k sensor but oh well, 4k480p global shutter sensor will have to suffice.
You know, the 18-35/1.8 is also a full frame zoom from 26-35mm (at least on a Pentax K1. Could the usable 26mm be possible due to focal flange distance in relation to the image circle?) It's super useful on full frame as well, as a substitute for using 28/1.8 and 35/1.8 primes.
Thank you. Not a lens for me personally but great to see what is achievable. These days I’m going smaller and lighter with a Sony A7CR. At some point though an f/2 midrange zoom like the Canon RF 28-70/2 might interest me. Take care.
It is pretty interesting that you don’t find this zoom razer sharp at its wider aperture. Every single review I have read or watched raves about how incredible the sharpness is wide open at the center at all focal lengths. Is it possible that the optical performance that you see comes from an underperforming sample?
Weddings are not my main gig, but I'd take my tamron 35-150 and drop a 1.2 or 1.8 prime on the second body. Though I have shot a very dark and active event with the tamron with good results after using lightroom's denoise feature.
OMG I wish Sigma would jump into Z Fullframe. This is exactly what I'd need. Currently I jump between 24mm, 35mm and 50mm 1.8 for my indoor stuff to get most of the ambient light. This lens would just be perfect to replace all that.
@@PhotoVideoTechOz I guess it's both sides needing to agree on something. Worked with Tamron, which gave us the lovely 35-150mm. Hopefully will happen with Sigma too. At least for APS-C we're already there.

Yeah its a pretty cool lens but I don't see that many reason to take that over a 24-70 2.8 with the Iso and IBIS in modern cameras you can easily compensate for the 1 stop
Great Job as always. Seems like a high quality lens - but such a niche focal length. Not wide enough for creative shots - and not long enough for portraits. Is this just a glorified 35mm prime?
I like my 18-35/1.8. On Pentax there is nothing close. It covers the large gap in K mount portfolio for APS-C. I wonder what mirrorless APS-C remake will come in future... 16-50/1.8 would be perfect :)
Thanks for the review as I was already contemplating getting the 18-35 f/1.8 in APS-C mode for some of my needs. I saw couple reviews saying the AF is good but not great even for fast walking subject so I am holding back for now otherwise it maybe be a good companion lens to the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.0-f/2.8 for lowlight event shooting for me. Maybe after a new firmware update? Thanks again for the review.
Why everyone forgets about the SIGMA 50-100mm f/1.8? Lol I am blown away by the price, honestly expected to see it around $2k. My only complaint about this review is that it was a missed opportunity to do it at night to showcase it's low light capabilities.
yesssssss I was looking for a 50mm 1.8, but this is better. Though it's like 600 more than I wanted to spend lol worth it tho. Keeping in mind I'm going a lot for video graphy, and little bit photo as well. Often on events as well
I don't know if it's sample variation or how these things go, I just watched Christopher Frost's review and the lens was basically pin sharp corner to corner across the board starting from F1.8.. an absolutely stunning performance! Suddenly here on this review the lens is soft wide open even in the center.. none of this makes sense to me but whatever.
Congratulations for that technical achievement, but ... basically a 24-120/4 is better both for landscape as well as portraits since it goes wider on the one hand and has a bigger aperture diameter at a more suitable focal length for the latter. And intimate environmental portraiture and street doesn't work with this intimitading behemoth of a lens either. Curious if I'll ever see one of these out in the wild.
The FF brother of the 18-35 is the already existing 24-35 f/2. This is some sort of mid ground. It's an interesting lens, but it's not the 2nd gen 24-35 f/2 I was hoping for.
Yes, this is the brother of the 18-35 APS-C. Which cropped would be around a 28-54mm. So this one is bit shorter on the long end but nothing crazy. It also stays at f1.8 which is crazy thinking this is full frame. Such a beast of a lens. A 28 f1.8, 35 1.8 and 50 1.8 bag of primes in one lens. Yeah, it’s big and heavy, but it replaces 3 lenses.
I’m literally selling the Tamron 35-150 in favor of this lens as a walk around lens solely for the wide end. This obviously isn’t a replacement for that lens, but 35 on the wide end has killed me too many times. I suspect the rumored 24-70 f2.0 will be better but at what is suspect will be at least 3x the price and external zoom, this is my choice.
The only reason this lens could be interesting is if it had excellent optics (which the 24-35 kind of had), but since this is not the case, the zoom range is not really exciting, very limiting.. so a good prime should always be favored IMHO

Plus the name sucks.
You got it. I’ll make a concerted effort
I currently use the 18-35 and it is an absolute gem, there is very little of similar quality in the dedicated apsc field.
Tamron 35-150mm is a crazy package. I can cover everything in a full wedding day with that and a 24-70mm GM.
This lens gives me added flexibility for shooting my UA-cam channel videos. I don’t use a studio setup so I’m constantly using different positions, settings and backgrounds in our scuba shop so the 28-45 range works out well.
This is definitely for us video guys. This is a great A cam interview lens. Pair it up with a 50-150mm or 70-200mm for the B cam and you're set.
Fantastic video!
Shot on GH7 for sure, background too in focus to be full frame and no notation about what camera was used, which is intentional of course.
I love my 24-105 but F4 isnt enough for every situation
ooof those picnic table shots are making me seasick.
Reminds me my Sigma 18-35 F1.8 and 50 -100 F1.8. Sigma keep on bring out great lenses.
INCREDIBLE GALLERY
Unrelated to the lens, do you update the “redacted” when the embargo lifts?
I would have bought a zoom starting at 24mm and at least f2.0. 28mm wide end is just not enough for me. Maybe that will come next.
Nikon Z6 iii looks good, at least in video
Panasonic has better autofocus than Nikon. Nikon sucks so bad 😅
@@lewcehjitl3282 This sounds like a faulty source. Nikon is basically AF relevant when you move up to the Exspeed 7 bodies.
@@lewcehjitl3282 you are imagining too much 😂
@@ElementaryWatson-oxo the Canon R100 has better autofocus than Nikons entire line up. Facts are facts 🤷🏻♂️. Nikon also ruined an all American company Red so sad..

I’m sorry but I think the plana as a unit of measurement isn’t going to stick. I think the noct is still the standard to which all lenses should be measured against.
The Plena is an optical standard. The best 135mm lens ever made.
@@macmac6479 You totally missed the point, but it's fine. The Noct is a curiosity, most people know the lens. The Plena?! Who the fck cares for this lens?!
The teaspoon is totally not gonna stick, everyone knows the Tablespoon is the ultimate unit.
@@Benjamin_JehneI do!
Impressive lens but I doubt it would replace primes for just walking around and taking shots. That this is massive!
Holy shit sigma.
Currently adapt an 18-35mm to an R7 and it's friggin great.
it will be interesting to compare this one with the rumoured 24-70 F2.0 from Sony.
if that Sony lens is 500g, I'll be the first one to buy.
omg I hope they will redesign 18-35 for the APSC users !!!!
would be nice, but de 18-35 is still a blast even in 2024
@@IJAY2509 True, but would be nice if they make native versions for Sony E and Fuji X mount. That lens is perfect for the Sony FX30 & A6700 and Fuji X-H2s, X-T5 and XS20
@@Edwin-- thats true
they dont really push crop sensor development atm
What does it need though? It seems like a really good lens still
Wow! What a very interesting lens. Thanks for the detailed review, gents!
That replacement for 35/1.8 looks a bit big and heavy, don't you think.
& terms of cost ;-)
With new Lenses getting nearly Perfect (Sony 24-70 GM2 or Sigma M2) i think it's a great idea that manifacturers getting into new lensdesigns and new Zoomranges.
But for now I will just watch you guys testing the awesome Fullframe stuff till I can jump up to Fullframe.
I know it would have been huge and expensive, but i was really hoping for an 18-35/1.8 to pair with my tamron 35-150/2.0-2.8.
Panasonic GH7, nice, finally looking real good, same image quality as a G9M2, was hoping for 8k sensor but oh well, 4k480p global shutter sensor will have to suffice.
I mean outside of the new auto focus performance, the 18-35 is a better buy so you have a universal lens and not one tied to a single system.
Cmon guys. What did you film it on? Great video.
I agree, it´s way cheaper than I tought it would be
Gotta say those Nikon greens always stand out to me.
Take care.
Sigma seems to have prioritize fstops rather than weight in their designs.
Though I have shot a very dark and active event with the tamron with good results after using lightroom's denoise feature.
it is time for sigma to make a modern 200-500mm f2.8 now
Sigma brought this lens out ahead of their full frame foveon camera, an interesting time indeed for us foveon sensor fans. :)
Sigma: "the USP of our lens is f1.8 covering 3 focal ranges"
le Chris * proceeds to shoot a crane at f16 and a model at f4 * 🙃
Absolutely because those shots worked better outside of f/1.8. You got some samples in there at 1.8 too.
OMG I wish Sigma would jump into Z Fullframe. This is exactly what I'd need. Currently I jump between 24mm, 35mm and 50mm 1.8 for my indoor stuff to get most of the ambient light. This lens would just be perfect to replace all that.
Ask Nikon to get out of the way
@@PhotoVideoTechOz I guess it's both sides needing to agree on something. Worked with Tamron, which gave us the lovely 35-150mm. Hopefully will happen with Sigma too. At least for APS-C we're already there.
Anything you can shoot with this zoom you can shoot with 35/1.8. It's a useless lens.
@@ElementaryWatson-oxo sure. who cares about the 50% more field of view between 28 and 45mm anyway. leaving alone all the differences in style and usage that come with certain focal lengths. nobody cares. useless lens. period.
@@trueatfalse lol. you are making stuff up. The difference between 28 and 35 is 1.25x and between 35 and 45 is 1.28x -- miniscule, no matter how you slice it.
People keep saying not having 24mm is the deal breaker for "professionals" but at my place, the most popular lenses that wedding photographers/videographers are Tamron 28-75mm G1/G2, and Sigma 24-70mm doesn't have a chance to compete.
People tend to manufacture reasons to disqualify lenses that they're not purchasing.
Looks like fun to shoot!
Now release a f/1.4 zoom for aps-c.
Any idea if it will ever be available in Nikon Z mount?
Yeah its a pretty cool lens but I don't see that many reason to take that over a 24-70 2.8 with the Iso and IBIS in modern cameras you can easily compensate for the 1 stop
I'm curious to see what will Sigma pair it with. Maybe a 40-90mm f/1.8 ?
Great Job as always. Seems like a high quality lens - but such a niche focal length. Not wide enough for creative shots - and not long enough for portraits. Is this just a glorified 35mm prime?
I like my 18-35/1.8. On Pentax there is nothing close. It covers the large gap in K mount portfolio for APS-C. I wonder what mirrorless APS-C remake will come in future... 16-50/1.8 would be perfect :)
I call it a stack up of primes.
At that time, Sigma 18-35/1.8 was sharper than many primes so I started my Sigma F1.8 purchase
It's not small, but for the right type of gig...
Lol
I am blown away by the price, honestly expected to see it around $2k. My only complaint about this review is that it was a missed opportunity to do it at night to showcase it's low light capabilities.
because that is a crop lens.
wonder if this lens can cover medium format?
Another Giant Titanic lenses by Sigma
yesssssss
I was looking for a 50mm 1.8, but this is better. Though it's like 600 more than I wanted to spend lol worth it tho.
Keeping in mind I'm going a lot for video graphy, and little bit photo as well. Often on events as well
3:51 you should clean your lens/sensor or are thos particles floating around there? 😅
Gerald Undone thought that $1350 was a bit on the high side 😊

Legendary lens
If they made an 18-30mm 1.8 equivalent version for Fuji X series I would buy it immediately.
that MSRP is crazy cheap
Honestly I was fully expecting it to be like $2000
nice irony
You can get the much better Sigma 35 f/1.4 for $550 less lol
are you being sarcastic? never know on internet if somebody is serious.
@@michaelbell75 yeah, and even 35/1.4 GM is now cheaper than 28-45. It's a nobrainer which one to buy.
Nice review, of this new art series lens, your in Canada why don't you quote Canadian pricing or show both on the screen ,that would be nice 👍
I like focus breathing. Why is this a negative?
Congratulations for that technical achievement, but ... basically a 24-120/4 is better both for landscape as well as portraits since it goes wider on the one hand and has a bigger aperture diameter at a more suitable focal length for the latter. And intimate environmental portraiture and street doesn't work with this intimitading behemoth of a lens either. Curious if I'll ever see one of these out in the wild.
I think the 24-70 f 2.8 still offers more advantages despite the light difference.
First thing in my Mind. Is this the FF brother of the legendary sigma 18-35 f1.8 APSC lense :D ?
Yeah, it’s big and heavy, but it replaces 3 lenses.
this is def being recorded on a GH7 considering it is coming out in 2 days
Thanks!
Manual linear throws (full vs 180) on L-Mount versus Sony rack implementation in context of breathing in realistic pulls at this range?
Too big for street, too restrictive for landscapes and scenery, but probably great for low light event work. Not a lens for me but very cool!
28 mm would be acceptable, but 45mm? What would you shoot with 45 mm?
The only reason this lens could be interesting is if it had excellent optics (which the 24-35 kind of had), but since this is not the case, the zoom range is not really exciting, very limiting.. so a good prime should always be favored IMHO
The zoom range is limited -- how useful do you consider it to be in practice?
My thought is this mainly removes the need to carry 24,35,50 fast primes and having to futz with them repeatedly
but like... why not get 35 1.4 from sigma? sharper to the edge judging on sample images.
How is the sharpness test here so widely different from Tony's?
This video is days old so they probably won't see this but @3:51 this is one of Chris' best shots and it's 35mm just sayin
