  • "They used to kill us with guns, now they kill us with deforestation and dams." The Brazilian government's failure to protect the Amazon forest is forcing the Munduruku indigenous people to take action against land grabs and illegal logging - and try to save the rain forest on their own.
In an unprecedented movement led by Chief Juarez Saw Munduruku, for the last six years indigenous people have been fighting the theft and destruction of their forest home.
Since 1970, 20% of the Brazilian Amazon has been deforested. Logging and forest fires are threatening a further 20%. Scientists say that at 40% deforestation, we will reach the point of no return. The forest will be lost forever, replaced by savannahs - and the environmental consequences will be catastrophic. The Amazon is often known as ‘the lungs of the planet,’ producing 6% of the world’s oxygen. It is no secret that the rainforest has been losing a dramatic fight against an array of threats, encouraged by capitalism, consumerism and greed - both legal and illegal.
In today‘s Brazil, some 600,000 square kilometers of land - an area about the size of France -- are farmed by farmers who don’t officially own it. The military dictatorship (1964-1985) encouraged them to settle on state-owned land, but the farmers never became legal owners. As a result, speculators now seize the areas, clear the forests, then resell the plots with forged title deeds. This land grab, known as "grilagem" in Portuguese, has led to uncontrolled forest clearing and fierce conflicts.
The documentary was shot from 2014 to 2020, under three different Brazilian governments. It provides deep insights into the drama of the illegal occupation of state land and forest areas by organized crime groups. Several indigenous peoples have united under Juarez Saw Munduruku, leader of the Munduruku people, in a last-ditch bid to save the planet’s most important forest.

Look what has happened in the United States over 400 years. The indigenous people are a very small majority now. Immigrants have ruined, deforested, and built so many concrete buildings that this country can't cool down anymore. The Amazon is like one of the lungs to this world. The more this continues the less it looks like survival for man

You sir are missing the whole point typical of of people who have never had to struggle for the merest essential in life water to drink how bout food you think about that while ur narrow mind was working of course not listen Lucas I don’t know how old you are nor do I care but what I do care about is all the damage men have done to this beautiful paradise that the creator has placed these people I’m indigenous yes and I have seen struggles for water rights for land it seems that those that have in this world only want what doesn’t belong to them let someone go in your home Lucas and becuase your shoes ur car is pretty !! They take it without you letting them how would you feel EXACTLY you have felt for one MAD and two violated you see when all these nations stop looking at these places the rainforest as a means to their Greed and when they have killed off every plant animal life what’s next the people and then people will not sit back and say oh what a beautiful place. Guess what it was a beautiful place but the people made that paradise a hell hole man is greedy and vengeful they do things with malice I picture the creator sitting up there and saying I tried to teach them to be humble happy for what they have but it didn’t work cuase we always want what doesn’t belong to us and if they won’t give it to them. They take it by force I’ll tell you right now they could care less who looks down on them you know why cuase they have been a people that have learned to be content in whatever state they may be in even though they don’t have much it’s us that can never find that peace of mind

@@WinterShadow131 I’m half American Indian. When the white man came to America, the Indians were helpful to them. They taught them how to hunt and fish. How to grow food. In return the white man stole all their land. When the American Indians realized what they were doing, they started fighting back but they lost. Hundreds of Thousands of American Indians were murdered, many women and children were taken as slaves to the white man. Now, American Indians have a very small part of land that this government decided to (Give) them! Everything was theirs but they were kind and decided to be helpful and share. It’s a horrible injustice. This same thing has happened in many other countries too. It’s a Shame and it’s very very wrong. They are destroying our planet 🌎. If there really is a God, I’m sure that he sees it all. I just don’t understand why he puts up with it. Take good care of you and I hope that you are able to fight for and keep your land and your rivers. Lots of Love and Respect for you and your people!♥️

We should be turning to indigenous people everywhere to learn something about how to care for the earth, how to live in harmony with nature. Indigenous people in…the Pacific NW, for this example…have traditions that keep wildfire danger lower, but greedy industries have practices that maximize profits at the expense of the world, that make wildfires more dangerous and destructive.
I think people also like to think of themselves as the lords and masters of the earth, that they can go anywhere, conquer nature, and exploit it for profit. Everyone needs to understand that we must change our ways drastically before we end up dooming young folks and the future generations.

Living in harmony with nature is the most fulfilling way a human can go through life. Embracing the fact that we are not a being that stands superior to all other forms of life, but rather just another part of the complex world of nature. For too long humankind has placed itself high above all other species, and it is that "god-given right" to use the world that will be our downfall. As they said in the doc, nature can thrive without us, but we cannot thrive without it.
Hopefully humans will realize the important relationship between life and the universe, before our own demise happens from our greed and blindness to what it means to be alive.

What do you think should be done? Disrespecting another country's sovereignty and taking its land from it? I don't think that would work, especially because there will still be greed no matter who owns the forest. Every single nation in the world is greedy. The only thing that would change is who is destroying the forest. Btw, some of this destruction is no one's fault because it's natural due to the seasonal wildfires.

    • @alexkobs9313

@@jt1903 I’m not saying we should disrespect another country’s sovereignty and take it’s land from it. I’m saying that we have to reduce our emissions drastically and stop deforestation in the Amazon right now. And it wasn’t seasonal wildfires. It was those miners and loggers. They were the ones that set fire to the Amazon. They have been causing destruction to the Amazon in the name of greed, making it harder for the Amazon to fully recover.

Get outta here with that. They are more intelligent knowledgeable and healthier and happier without and THAN us than we could ever imagine.

How on earth does the Brazilian Government doesn't know the importance of the Amazon? (or they know but pretends not to) We're already suffering so much, the consequence of this action will slowly present itself and the damage will be irreversible because nature is not a product of man it's alive (obviously can't be manipulated to go back as how it is whenever we feel like it)

This is all related to the history of the colonization of the country. When Brazil was colonized by Portugal, land was passed down from one generation to another, after this system "died" a law was created allowing everyone, WITH MONEY , to buy land but the thing was ... only the european descendants were the ones with money at that time, so the indigenous people and black people had no way to afford their own land, this lead to them either leaving that area or going to "cortiços", cheap buildings, which later would be destroyed by the government and because of that people started building houses in irregular places, that's how the favelas happened but I'm not gonna get into that here.
So if you think about it , the old system didn't die because that law was created and everything is connected to our past, there was no support to indigenous people or black people who had just gained their freedom when that law was created. The ones with money would buy a lot of lands and still be passing it down to their sons and the cycle would go on, this caused a huge land concentration problem here. You have a small percentage of people with lots of land while the rest of the country has nothing which is why a lot of people protest for a adjustments in the distribution of land here.
There are laws here in Brazil that says that lands that are not being used can be occupied by small farmers or people for living but ofc is not that simple. People who try to do that are killed, threaten and deceived just like many indigenous people are and guess by who ? OFC by the land owners, which also happen to be politicians because they invest in agrobusiness and cattle which is where the money is at in Brazil , so with that money they enter in politics because is not enough for them to steal land 🤡 they need to steal our money too.
So this is why it seems like the government doesn't care about what's happening in the amazon forest, because they don't, they are destroying it for their companies, for their own business, own interests and same happens with politics here. If you look up the Elite families of Brazil , they are all connected to the old European families who would own slaves and big farms that I mentioned, nothing changed these people don't wanna lose their privileges.
So the amazon is being destroyed by big companies, cattle business, agro business. Most of the meat that is being produced is not even for us to eat, is to export for people from first world countries to consume, the soy that is invading the amazon land is not for the people who are starving in the country, is for the cattle to eat to get fat and produce better quality meat and the cycle goes on.
There's so much more I can't talk about here because it would be too long and this is just the tip of the iceberg , there are also other indigenous ethnicities in Brazil who are not from the amazon and are losing their lands in other regions of the country, the media doesn't show anything and those who try to talk are murdered. We do care. We do protest and many people are going vegan for this reason. Is important to say that we don't support the current president actions. The ones who support that clown are dumb old conservative religious people, the middle class who think they are rich and the elite who uses the president as their face for their own interests and to manipulate the previous ones i mentioned.
