- Swimming a jig for bass is one of Bill Lowen's favorite techniques. The tactic allows you to quickly cover water and can be fished through nearly every habitat type nationwide. Knowing what equipment to use will allow you to get the most out of the system - Bill breaks it down in detail here.
He starts by describing the right jig head style for sliding through cover such as grass and wood with minimal fouling, while also maintaining some lift in the water. You don't want to struggle to maintain the jig off the bottom. He delivers guidance on jig trailer selection and 3 jig colors that'll have you covered anywhere, anytime. Lastly, Bill stresses the importance of the right rod action, reel speed and line rating to efficiently put the swim jig to work with maximum action and casting accuracy while minimizing fatigue.

Man, You speak my fishing language! Not only do you give your opinion about the bait, pole reel and colors. But, Why you go the route you do. I don't fish the tournament's or even own a boat. But I try to improve every year. I dont have the best equipment. But ,I try and maximize. The fishing equipment I have. Just, Joe average. That loves to fish! Keep up the great video's. Your present tation is spot on! SHAWN
Thanks for the comment Shawn. It's definitely not about the money but about the knowledge. Keep working hard and growing your skills sets. Glad to have guys like you in the fishing community.
Love these videos. Super informative. Keep 'em coming!
Great footage! Bill is great!
Mr. WORLDWIDE!! Funniest guy on tour
Best spinning rod and reel type for swim jigs? 🙏
Great stuff, doesn’t feel like your opinions are decided by advertisers like so many you tubers
How so? He’s done nothing but mention Brand. Brand. Brand.
I like swim jigs, high confidence in them. I notice the one in your hand doesn't have eyes on it. Are eyes to catch me or the fish? Do I really need to pay up for jigs with eyes? I've seen heads, maybe that head, that I could buy a bunch of heads and different skirts and really simplify my game.
Eyes on baits are really about individual angler confidence. Some feel it gives fish more of a target to hone in on so they eat the part of the bait with the hooks. Realism is also a factor, especially in ultra-clear water and with baits that suspend (jerkbaits). Bass will often visually inspect the presentation before committing. Linking success to eyes is tough though, as it's but just one variable in many. We're always in favor of trying a simplified/affordable route -- if it works, you gain confidence, catch fish and save money in the process.
I’m a pond fisherman. I have never caught anything on any type of jig. I don’t know if I’m not patient enough or what. Maybe I’m working it wrong. Slow, fast, reel stop reel, let it rise and fall. IDK. I feel like I always get a hit with soft plastics or some sort of crank bait but nothing with a jig. 🤷🏻♂️
Try letting it fall to bottom first. Pop it up few times, and slowly retrieve keeping it low to bottom
@@damionbrown2705 thank you. I do fish the jig like this. Maybe I work it too fast. IDK. Keep trying I guess
Great video with great information. I am new to swim jigs fishing but I am going to dedicate more time to it. Quick question Is fall the best time to throw a swim jig or is it a year round bait.
Spring and fall are generally the best. Spring being most popular. That said, you can catch bass on a swimjig alll year long.
@@Wired2Fish thanks alot I appreciate that.
I too am 20% tip
Okay....okay.....M’kay
Didnt think to shake it on the retrieve
FishingWithFred gets the skirt to flare a little extra
Put the right trailer on for the right weight head and it will move the skirt for you with out having to shake the rod. Check out tacticalbassin everything you need to know about swim jigs
I am new to braid line . does this require a mono leader?
Irwin M. Fletcher mono or floro will work great! I typically would go floro .
Always use a leader! Of course there’s a few exceptions like throwing frogs or heavy baits into vegetation and in stained water... but if the water has some visibility and you’re not fishing dense vegetation use a leader
Irwin M. Fletcher Using a leader doesn't matter unless you're using high vis braid, like on spinning tackle. I've caught fish in clear, open water with straight braid no leader. Either way, if a fish is that worried about the line, might as well move on cuz he ain't gonna bite anyways.
I don’t always use leader. I haven’t found much of a difference. On my finesse spinning reel I use 20lbs high visibility braid and 12-14lbs Floro leader. On one one my casting reels I run straight braid. I mainly fish spooks and frogs on it, but sometimes I put that reel on other rods. Fish still bite straight braid.
Braid doesn't stretch but it's a great main line, I recommend 20/30 pound braid with about an 18 inch leader of florocarbon or mono to absord the shock since floro and mono stretch a bit and the clear floro/mono leader so it wont be as visible to the fish.
Good luck
Ok
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SHAKE THE ROD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay. Okay. OkayOkayOKay.
Ok....
We get it, okay? okay? okay?
Super annoying (okay......okay). Had to stop watching half way through.
Nice Commercial. Jesus
