When Steve Kennedy fishes a swim jig he really seems to make more small pitches and casts then big casts. He stays close to the cover and therefore he probably hits 3 - 5 more high percentage areas over the course of one day then the normal fisherman.
Wes Logan understands that fishing pressure can make bass do something a little different. We watched Wes Logan fish a swim jig to the tune of $100,000 in a Bassmaster Elite Series Win.
He made a switch from a white swim jig, to a black swim jig, which no one was throwing, and was able to get more bass to commit to the bait.
Gerald Swindle fishes a swim jig on a composite rod, which has more of a moderate action to it. He does this because he is using braid, and when you use braid with a swim jig, you can get away with using a lighter action rod.

Hey man I really appreciate this comment. I really believe that everyone has a little bit different way of fishing and I think that is fine. Two guys could have completely different set ups and ways of working a jig that yield the exact same results, so why change if it is working for you? I have whooped peoples butt in my boat before and I have gotten whooped. Some guys may not be great at a lot of techniques but there is one that they can teach you a lot about so I would never try to claim to be an expert. I always want to learn. Thanks for watching!!

I actually have 2 setups for swim jig fishing... I have a 7'3" H/F that I throw braided line on in very heavy cover and a 7'2" MH/MF that I throw both braided line and fluorocarbon on in more open water. You really have to adjust your equipment to the hook and cover otherwise you're going to lose or miss a lot of fish. Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

Great info in this breakdown. I fish all jig styles like a swim jig basically. I just take advantage of how the different head shapes work better in different cover. Short accurate pitches is how jigs do their magic. 🎣🎣🎣🎣

Thanks for the tips Brotha:) I love Swim Jig fishing. It's my favorite technique. I usually run 50lb braid to a leader and land 90% of my fish. The rod I use is a Dobyn's Fury 734 which has some give in the tip, which I think really helps me land them at a good rate.

I watched a lot of UA-cam bass anglers that taught me about pitching but I can’t recall what made me start doing it. I remember it started with a baitcaster, I was on a reservoir on a rental boat and I was trying to cover water fast so I was reeling in and then pitched it back, over and over. I don’t do it often but it becomes second hand nature 😅 I legit don’t think about it, I’m casting one second and then I’m pitching until I get a bite. If I don’t get a bite then that’s when I slow down and cast again. I guess it depends on the area and the weather.
As always I enjoyed the info. Do you sit up your reel differently for flipping and pitching a jig?
Great stuff once again. A swim jig has always been a go to bait for me. A few seasons ago I broke my favorite rod on the water an had to make a change. I picked up my top water rod and tied one on an to my surprise this rod seemed to do better than the one I broke. It’s priced great for the working man on a budget. It’s the berkley cherry rod 7’ med. action and the best part Walmart always has lots. Never stop teaching 👍

I have several of those in casting and spinning. I bought mine several years ago they were like 19.99. They feel and do just as well as my 119 to 179 rods

It is true about the braided line and the rigidity of the rod, in my country we fish fish with bone jaws and they recommend using fast rods, but I also realized that if it is very fast, the lure is removed from its mouth, so I switched to a medium action rod and I was no longer losing fish.
I like using a crankbait rod for this technique

What sets you apart from so many of the other how to fishing channels on UA-cam is you focus almost entirely on education and methods and luers that work and no one goes more deeply into a subject or provides nearly as larger of more valuable details in the how when where and why to fish specific types of luers and while you do at recommending what luers or methods to use you are very clear in saying other manufacturers of the same luers will work also showing your primary objective is in educating your fellow fisherman to become better more successful fisherman vs just trying to convince us to buy one manufacturers luers vs another lastly you educational videos are superbly well edited to eliminate all waisted time and have zero fluff or information that is otherwise unhelpful

I have been fishing 90% from the bank or wading for over 50 years I still chase literally every common fresh water fish except Musky and Crappie and only because most lakes near me dont have alot of either in them
Been subscribing to fishing magazines for decades and yes they did help especially InFishermen before it went more advertising than educational
Then about 12-14 months ago decided I needed to up my fishing knowledge as my sons who Id been taking bank fishing since they were 6 were really wanting to become better more successful fisherman especially since we left a private club after 7 years with a very good fishing lake complete with boats for use that had spoiled my sons on how easy it was to always catch something every time we went there fishing also our access (since the 1990's) to an absolutely suberb best Ive ever seen or fished shoreline small mouth (catching 10-30 small mouths a day was common along with multiple 5-10lb sheepshead) fishery on lake Michigan minutes from my home no longer allows access so I was forced to up my fishing skills so I can inturn educate my sons.
I have been regularly watching different channels like yours literally everyday for months and months trying to find ones that actually educate and not just sell stuff.
What sets your channel apart from 90% of the rest is you explain things both in great detail but still in a simple enough and complete enough manner to make these techniques easy to use and master but what you do that so vary few others do is break down the techniques so well I can use them effectively from shore
Which stands in stark contrast to at least 80% or more channels that focus so intensely an explaining thier techniques to apply almost entirely while fishing offshore from a boat.
My fishing success has already improved thanks to you and so has my sons. I now try to buy all my fishing gear through your affiliated sight even though I have a Cabelas 15 minutes from my home
You are easily one of the 5 best fishing educational channels on UA-cam and I have found none that have helped me and my sons more.

Love swim jigs
Kennedy during the classic was basically just dipping his line in the water. Never seen anything like it hah. It was def producing though
The rod power- medium heavy versus heavy- doesn't matter near as much as the action- you want a moderate fast action instead of a full fast action. I use the same medium heavy moderate /fast action rod I use for larger squarebills, chatter baits, wobble heads, etc.- works great for me. Some heavy rods load further into the blank than others- like my Powell Endurance, it loads like a moderate/fast action even though it's fast- so I can use it if I'm having trouble turning their head when I set the hook. Rods vary so much between makers it hard to say what action you need really- you just want one that loads down to the middle section of the blank. Not only will it keep you from pulling it away from them when they bite, it helps keep them pinned when they come up slinging their head. Jigs give them plenty of leverage and they throw them easily if they're not pinned. Once you do that imo the trailer makes the most difference- the right one will destabilize the jig and make it flare and roll as it kicks- which eliminates the need for all that shaking on the retrieve- just chuck-n-wind. I prefer to fish them n fluoro over braid but, that's just me- I think braid is severely over used. Only time I use straight braid is flipping heavy cover or frogging.

I only fish from the bank in Korea, but we have largemouth bass here too so I really want to learn how to use a swim jig. This vid was awesome!
I got a few beginner questions, if I use a M or MH rod (can throw a lure up to 3/4oz right?) what should my line be? Braided line + a fluorocarbon leader? What lb test should I use? And what's the weight of my swim jig should I use?
FWIW I'm a bank beater in the Central US, my setup for swim jigs is a 7'3" MH-F Lew's TP1 Black with a 100 size Lew's LFS reel spooled with 14 lb flouro (Sunline Crank FC). If you use flouro, anything from 10-15 lb test should be sufficient in all but the heaviest of grass. If you have heavy grass, or just prefer braid to flouro, go with a decently heavy braid (30-50 lb) and a softer rod. A flouro leader might be useful if you're using it to cover open water, but it isn't typically all that necessary if you're running it through thick cover. As for weights of jigs to get, if you only have to buy one, 3/8 oz will be the most versatile. If you want to cover your bases, a 1/4 and a 1/2 oz will be all you should need fishing from the shore. I also recommend Keitech Fat Swing Impact paddletails for trailers (3.8 in for 1/4 and 3/8, 4.3 in for 1/2 oz).

I use one NOBODY uses. It's a Nichols Saber Jig in Tennessee Shiner. It's a mostly clear skirt with a few black strands, both full of gold glitter. I trail it with a Zoom Z Craw in green pumpkin flash. Although I cut an inch off it, I like the big one because they're more clear than green pumpkin, but full of glitter. It's all about FLASH.
Not saying I’m anywhere near as good as Steve Kennedy but as a delta kayak fishermen the first tip is so common out here that I see a lot of non locals miss out on. This is almost a guarantee when fishing out here, get close up and pitch into an object that should hold bass and bam you got a bite!

If you're missing fish, it's because the hook point didn't find the fish's mouth and thus trimming the weedguard should be your next step, not a different rod. Clipping several strands off at the jighead (according to cover thickness) makes the guard weaker thus allowing the point to penetrate easier.

Trim weedguard or not?
I started to yo-yo my swim jig almost all the time on retrieve and i catch more bass
I don't normally get close enough to other boats to see what they are using.
I fish my swim jigs on a lews tp1 med heavy moderate with 17lb fluro .
Steve Kennedy is swimming a flipping jig not a standard swim jig. He uses 3/4 D&L advantage jig with a zoom super chunk.
