As a more passive viewer that only goes on streams to watch what is going on without ever chatting, I find UA-cam way better just for the video player. Being able to pause, go back and resume where I left, even on my phone, and without addbreaks is so much more enjoyable.

idk, it annoys me more than it helps. If I quickly join a stream that is essentially a podcast, and I want to watch the whole thing later, it starts later and often resets to that point when you reload.
Despite the higher bitrate, image quality is also worse thanks to youtube's compression

It's funny because Ludwig is right and wrong at the same time about the first stream he sees (Kiara). She is not a Japanese streamer and streams almost exclusively in English, but her channel's region IS set to Japan just like every Hololive channel regardless if they stream in Japanese or not, so it actually SHOULDN'T be showing up in the tab for his region.

A pop-up request for hosting would be great. The streamer gets a notification that someone is trying to host them and they can either accept or deny it. This would stop hate raids and still allows you to uplift smaller / not in your immediate friend circle streamers. With a 5 min expiry timer, if not accepted than it gets automatically denied. Easy.

  • @LauchitaOk
    @LauchitaOk 2 роки тому +531

About the raid on yt i think they can totally do like a raid request where you send a request to the streamer you want to raid and the streamer decides either to accept the request or not. That way they can avoid the hate raids better than Twitch and make it quite easier to raid someone

As much as I think UA-cam does stupid stuff, from a developers perspective this is probably (don’t work for UA-cam so don’t know for sure) working 100% as expected and I’m actually on UA-cam’s side if that is the case. If you wanted it to have that sort of refresh, you’d be adding potentially millions of calls per second to UA-cam servers, just so that if a streamer happens to go offline when you are staring at this screen (and the majority of people don’t keep this page up long), it then refreshes and grabs new streams. That is a lot of work for a case that is at most a nuisance and rarely happens.

The frustrating part is that UA-cam used to have a ton of customization options. Setting your default video quality if it was available, changing your youtube channel link to a custom one. At one point they made a dedicated editing feature, you could do primitive video stabilization, clickable end links (that sent to outside links) all removed. The excuse for all this being consistency, but all this is doing is ensuring that the phone experience is significantly worse because they don't have extensions, that fix the glaring problems that youtube has caused trying to "simplify".

The fact that chats are saved and played in VODs tells us that chats ARE there, so what's the deal there? For those who have never streamed or modded, member chatlogs are SUPER useful in that it helps you view if a user is a repeat offender or maybe just new and didn't read the rules (warning vs timeout/ban) among other things. Maybe it's an issue with YT's current privacy and ToS where they need to change the verbiage due to how user data would be displayed to mods/streamers? Regardless, this seems like a basic tool for a successful streaming platform. I think you're right that YT just gave up due to how badly they have handled YT comments in the past. I like how they added more monetization features before fixing the core function of the app. Gotta make that money first.

It used to be two weeks for non-partners and/or people who don't have Twitch Prime, but recently they decided to be worse to non-affiliates and slice those two weeks into one week. Found that out the hard way due to only recently going back to streaming, and lost a four-hour stream that I put a lot into.

Clips on YT don't seem as bad as you're putting it. You can't download clips on Twitch either natively but there's extensions that will let you do it for both. Other than that the clip only existing unless the vod is privated makes sense for me at least in case the streamer wants to get rid of all clips of something that happened for privacy reasons (if you want to avoid that, download the clip before it gets taken down).
Also the spiffing brit has a great video about how the schedule live system on YT can be exploited since it recommends your stream to a lot of people if you perpetually keep delaying the broadcast. It explains the system very well but is a very niche "feature" and exists as an unintentional bug so it probably doesn't deserve much credit.
Other than that I'd say all of your criticisms about the UA-cam streaming experience are pretty on point, but I doubt things will change drastically any time soon.

You can't expect youtube to look like twitch tho, they still need to be youtube. they are a video site trying to do livestreaming without completely changing the entirety of their platform. maybe add a tab thats livestreaming next to the explore tab that can change based on viewer habits but, I still do think that *relatively*, streaming is sort of its own bubble and a small one too. you don't go to twitch like you go to youtube expecting fast paced well cut content, and its going to be hard to get people on youtube to have the attention span for the slower and just different vibe of streaming, and if the bubble is small enough, maybe its not worth it to youtube to make this golden streaming platform. although they are taking on more and more creators from twitch, like you said they aren't just going for any streamers, theyre going for like otv and only bubbles because trying to make the platform as a whole more streamer friendly is a little unfair

Funny how everybody forgets that UA-cam had a seperate streaming platform (UA-cam Gaming). If anything, the discoverability during these 7(!) years has not improved or even got worse. They could've and should've improved their seperate platform. Me and I imagine most other people clearly seperate between a video and a stream. They are two completely different experiences and I don't think you should mix them like UA-cam does. I bet pretty much none of the viewers on livestreams come from the Gaming or Livestream section, but most of them from their subscriptions and thus from their homepage. Maybe Shorts is more important for UA-cam now and they've kinda shoved livestreams to the side for now.

This is absolutely not true. They've been in the market since 2015, with the creation of UA-cam Gaming as a division and separate app. It's the main reason there are so many issues with live streaming. It stemmed from when the app and main initiative were shut down in 2019, right before the pandemic helped start a new renaissance regarding Gaming content. YT Gaming was essentially an inferior Twitch and curbed gaming content to this portion of the site and app, which essentially killed gaming videos on YT for a while. Live-streaming hasn't really improved since then, only the ability to actually do it on the site.

Hey Lud, just wanted to point out that the first "Japanese" streamer that you pointed out for GTA is actually Kiara, an English Vtuber from Hololive's English branch. She speaks Japanese and German too, but she mainly streams in English. Still agree with all of your points though.

Won't go to deep into it but Kiara is an English streamer LOL. Literally under the branch of HOLOLIVE EN as in English.

I remember UA-cam streamers talking about directly working with engineers on the UA-cam team and how excited they were about the features that were coming…. 3-5 years ago….

I'd argue that there isn't as much interactions between UA-cam streaming and chat. Like, paying for Brian to say some funny tts or using channel points to interact with the streamer. I've always held that it allowed chat to adopt a personality that can lead to funny interactions with their streamer.

Small correction: The first gaming liver he showed ( kiara) is an English and Japanese streamer.

They should make a "Live" tab, and just have it be like twitch, so its much easier. They are trying to integrate it into the normal UA-cam website but it just doesn't work.

Ah yes, my favorite Japanese streamer, Takanashi Kiara from Hololive English. :P

I think the way it’s set up rn is that it expects you to discover livestreams through a UA-cam video. Like if someone is streaming and I get algod their video, it says the person is live so I can go in

Arguably the single most important user-facing feature: Can I pause/resume/seek a stream? Can I rely on VODs to be there to catch up later? Twitch fails the basics.

Small correction. You were highlighting Takanashi Kiara when saying that youtube recommends "japanese videos instead of regional content". But Kiara streams basically only to an english audience, so that's the algorythm actually working as intended.

She sets her region to Japan, so no, it isn't the algorithm working as intended.

@@undeadman7676 It's "Sorted by most viewers in your region" so nope. Most people from the US were watching her stream in this category. It is the algorithm working as intended, Ludwig just misunderstood how it worked.

The main thing I love about twitch is that I can watch a stream in player in player mode on my iPhone where as on UA-cam i think it’s hidden by a pay wall

One issue I have with using truffle is when you chat it doesn't appear in the live chat. I tried many times to type something and the message doesn't appear for others.
