I had this done 3 weeks ago. 6cm ventral hernia with incarcerated omentum and added a mesh. No pain after 2 weeks, I feel great. My surgeon is amazing, Dr. Doraiswamy
Great to hear! Thank you for your comments.
Hi! May I ask you something? I heard the mesh can lead to sepsis. I'm torn whether to do the surgery or not. What are your thoughts?
@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists what if it's less then a 2cm ?? Still need surgery?
im on week two after my surgery (6cm mesh too) and over the period of a week i went from hiding in my cave to chomping at the bit to get to the gym (i know it's still going to be a while)
@@shivanshyadav2700from what my doctor told me is that if you get it removed when is smaller the recovery will be super fast and almost painless, whilst if you wait for it to get bigger there can be more complications. If is really small they won’t have to use a mesh
I just had my hernia repaired almost a month ago now and everything went really good the healing is going well etc. just wanted to take a min to recognize all doctors/surgeons and their staff/team you guys are all pretty freaking amazing in the work that you do! Us patients should be very greatful we have access to such awesome medical care in this country i know i am! that procedure looked very difficult although that surgeon made it look easy! I had this with mesh 3 weeks ago, settling nicely. Pain meds definitely necessary for first circa 72 hours. Already feel more mobile, also some unexpected benefits, eg my taste has improved alot? A friend said something about potential toxin build up over the years? It's great, regardless. Great video Sir.

Amazing to see this surgery. I had it done two weeks ago, but for a more minor hernia (no mesh required). Pretty much painless.

I came here to ask if it was normal to not have a mesh, glad to see is normal for smaller hernias.
Than you for this!

I literally had this surgery just yesterday in Upstate N.Y. As I sit here recuperating, I am in discomfort, trying not to cough, taking my pain mess and sleeping in my recliner. I had lived with this for over a year, then it became uncomfortable to live with any longer. It was a 3.5 incarcerated hernia, my belly was filled with air for the surgery and I did get mesh. I'm hoping to feel better in a couple of weeks so I can work out. I lost 60 pounds before the surgery, took 6 months, and I could see the bulge and really feel it because of the stomach shrinkage. I'm happy I had it done, despite the pain, because I heard it could become serious if left untreated.
Pain meds, not mess! Darn auto correct. Lol
Thank you for your comments and sharing your situation.
Oh wow. I just lost almost 60 lbs because of the same thing. Having mine operated on tomorrow.very nervous.

Hi! I love watch your videos for Surg Tech case studies. Can you tell me more about the suture types and sizes you used here?
We typically use 0 PDS for the fascia, 0 Vicryl to tack the umbilicus down, 3-0 Vicryl for the deep layer and 4-0 Monocryl for the skin layer.
I currently have an uncorrected umbilical hernea. I was informed about during my separation physical when I retired from the military. Its been a few years since then… The surgery is covered by the VA since its service connected. I still can’t seem to push myself to get the surgery. Never had any type of operating room surgery before.
Thank you for your comments. Good luck if you decide to have surgery in the future.
Have you had any patients complain about long-term post-op pain due to the mesh? If so, what do you do for them? I'm having an ultrasound done for what I believe to be an inguinal hernia later this week. If it is a hernia, what surgical options are there other than mesh?
Closet, Chronic pain can occur after any type of surgery, not just hernia surgery. It's never been shown that mesh is the cause of post operative pain, and mesh is used 10,000's of times each day across the world. Best, CAHS

I just underwent an open port site hernia repair 4 days ago. I’ve been in quite a bit of pain even with medication. Walking is hard and I am hunching over, which creates more back pain than I already experience. With the amount of pain and what I’ve seen my body underwent, I’m not concerned about the healing process. But what do you recommend for after care for healing and when do you advise returning to work? I have a desk job.

@@johndeakin9497 Your comment is rude and unnecessary. This person was obviously in pain and you are on here insulting them and for what.
1. You have no idea how old this person is. Age plays a role in how we recover.
2. You have no idea how physically fit this person is and if they have existing mobility issues.
3. You have no idea what other medical conditions they may have previous to the surgery that could delay or complicate healing.
4. The type of surgery you had may have been different then theirs, thus resulting in different recovery times.
5. The location and size of the hernia matters.
6. You do not know the skill of the surgeon or if there were any complications during the surgery.
You should really apologize for being a jerk. There was literally no need to say what you did.
I've had an umbilical repair at the age of 3 years old . I'm 52 and now I've had another umbilical hernia and also a hital hernia. But the umbilical hernia bothers me more and I've had alot of abdominal surgeries 5 to be exact and so I'm not exactly happy all about getting surgery again so I've been putting it off. Hey Doctor, really appreciate if you could pleaee advise
I had an ultrasound for kidney stone and a 2cm para-umblical hernia was detected. Stone is gone and I don’t have any stomach problem anywhere.
Surgeon is recommending to have surgery whereas GP is suggesting to defer it since I dont have any symptoms
Many patients have hernias and can safely watch them without surgery if they are asymptomatic.

David, The American College of Surgeons has some literature as well as the usual medical text books. Best, CAHS
Hi! What is chance of recurrence with mesh/without mesh? Can I workout after surgery in gym just like before?(after recovery of course)
Recurrence rates for hernia repairs is about 1-2% with mesh, and about 10-20% without mesh. Our patients are cleared to return to the gym after about 3 weeks of recovery. Best, CAHS
Just had mine done yesterday. Very sore right now. One hour surgery.
Thank you for your comments. Get well soon!
I have to make a doctor's appointment because I think I have a hernia. The area is sore and if I bump against it, it hurts. I had the same surgery as a kid but I don't remember anything about it.
Thank you for your comments, CAHS
Is this done with local anaesthetic in the video or general anaesthesia? I have potentially a hernia that needs repairing and I am dreading general anaesthesia :(
We use a combination of local and general or MAC anesthesia.
Hi is Laparoscopic the best option for large reducible umbilical hernia, and if the patient loses weight first before the operation, will the hernia sac shrink? Also can the fat inside the hernia sac be cut out potentially?
It's impossible to suggest one approach or another through this platform. Patients need to be assessed and examined to help determine the best next steps. Even with weight loss, a hernia will not get smaller without surgery. We hope you are able to see a good surgeon and have a successful surgery. Best, CAHS

I have two umbilical hernias with a cyst that is currently leaking through my belly button for the third time. My appointment is tomorrow to check.. I'm also 271 pounds 4ft11 and I'm at the beginning stages of my 6 month pre op bariatric surgery program. The goal is to get the hernia repaired during per my surgeons suggestion however, with the currently leaking and soreness is it life threatening to wait 6 month for it to be done? I don't have any fever or flu like symptoms just aching and you can see white and pink skin as well as yellow oozing with a bit of blood like les that a dime size worth a day. I feel huge movements in my stomach that feel like a fully developed baby kicking

great technique for small umblical hernia
Thank you for your comments.
Just had mine done 3 weeks ago. It's infected and I probably will have to do it again. Dr drained it 2 days ago, it was sticking out real bad. Now it's puffing up again already. I'm praying the antibiotics start kicking in and it starts to get better. I'm so bummed. I'm 61 and live alone. The Dr came in with a 1st year medical student. When the Dr was squeezing the liquid out the young kid passed out and went out cold. Kinda crazy because it wasn't even blood. I heard it happens quite often.
We're sorry to hear about your situation. We hope you recover quickly.
I have umbilical hernia. It's gotten a little bigger. I can feel a lump above my belly button. I know I'm going to have to get this surgery. Is this done through general anastasia ? How long is the recovery time? .. Thank you, Doctor or anyone who can answer my questions.
Most patients are under a general anesthesia for their surgery. Regarding recovery, we have a number of videos and pages on our website which can help guide you.
Dr Todd Geetings from India ! is surgery recommendable for 17mm Umbilical defect hernia ? Will be waiting for your advise in this case, Patient had blood in the urine for 2 days. Let me know if any other details required.
We tell our patient's that it's 100% up to them on whether they choose to have surgery for their hernia or just observe it. 75% of hernias get larger so most of our patients opt to proceed with surgery.
I’m actually quite unsure if I have an umbilical hernia. A few days ago I had some pain develop in my lower abdomen and belly button which slowly went away with some NSAIDs, however i feel something soft at the roof of my belly button and I’m slightly worried it may be a slight hernia. There’s no visible bulge though and I don’t have any other symptoms, which is what has me confused. Not sure if I need surgery or not.
We advise patients who have little to no symptoms to just watch their hernia. Even patients who can feel a small hernia can usually safely just observe the hernia as long as it doesn't get larger or cause more symptoms. Seeing your local primary doctor can help you make a more informed decision.
Can I get open surgery WITHOUT mesh? I've read and listened to problems developing with propylene mesh post-surgery. Is nerve damage a secondary and real possibility? I have an umbilical hernia and I'm very concerned with chronic pain that doesn't go away. Thank you.
Chronic pain is extremely uncommon after umbilical hernia repairs since there are very few nerves which run through that area. Inguinal hernia repairs are more prone to chronic pain due to the number of nerves in the area.
I had mine done 4 days ago without mesh. Surgeon said as long as I’m not planning on excessive weight training, I’ll ll be fine without mesh. It was important for me to avoid the mesh.
Had open umbilical w/mesh ( 5 " incision) one week ago today. Freaking hurt like hell for 4 days with lot of meds on board. Just now about to get out of bed without excruciating pain.
My fault, put off a dime size, " outie" for 18 years....get that thing fixed while its small! Trust me.
Thank you for your comments, and sharing your situation.
Good which kind of anesthesia u used just local or general too
We typically use general anesthesia since sewing the muscle can be painful. In some cases local and sedation can be an option.
Does it work from the first time u do it. I just got it two days ago and Henry ford hospital want to do the procedure. So how do I know if I’m dealing with a professional doctor “knows what he is doing”? And if so what can I ask for or look for?
We suggest using the ACHQC.org doctor locator. Anthony Iacco, MD is one of the best in that area and a good option for patients in Detroit.
I had this done 10 years ago and this is the first time I see wat went down on me

Im freaking out because im pretty positive i have a hernia without the buldging but its been hurting in and off since i went to the gym 5 months ago. Used an ab cruncher machine heard a pop and my stomach right above my belly button hurts all the time.
Not every hernia surgery requires a mesh for repair. Your surgeon will make that assessment either before or during your surgery should you choose to have it repaired.
3 weeks in with mesh healing well

So I just had a ventral vertical inguinal hernia repair with mesh 3 days ago … my hernia was obstructed … can you tell me how my surgery went ? I feel it was different than this. They did go through my belly button. Won’t this also possibly cause another hernia? I’m in a ton of pain 😢. My drs wouldn’t give me anything for pain. Other than IBprofuen 600 bc I am a recovering addict (6yrs clean ) ❤ but my god I wish they’d have given me something more. Bc I’m hurting so bad. Also why are my legs and back and neck so sore ?
Thank you for your comments. We hope you have a quick recovery.
I am interested in what happened. Did the pain decrease soon after posting here? Did you give in to narcotics because it hurt so bad? Did the surgery work? Are you pain free now? I'm rooting for your success.
I have a small umbilical hernia I will get repaired soon. I want to do open repair after watching your video instead of laparoscopic. Laparoscopic seems overly complex for such a small repair. Robotic hernia repair would be overkill in my opinion. What kind of anesthesia are most of open umbilical hernia repair patients receiving? I would prefer local/regional over general anesthesia. I had local/regional anesthesia for my Inguinal hernia many years ago.
For small umbilical hernias we would 100% of the time offer a small open repair. Laparoscopic and robotic are more useful for larger 3cm+ defects rather than small 1-2cm defects in our opinion.
Hi, Dr, I've had an umbilical hernia for about 3 months now andd its still the same size with no pain or discomfort what so ever, is surgery still required? I also have been lifting weights the same since then (which im careful about)
Hernias that don't limit activities and/or are not getting larger can be reasonably just watched instead of having surgery. Patients can discuss options with their PCP or surgeon.
@@CaliforniaHerniaSpecialists Thank you for your reply, also, as I've done more research on my umbilical hernia, i have been having a "bloated/pressured" stomach for about 2 years, but i got a CT scan done, they did not find anything at that time, but its hard to pass gas, and it feels like im constipated but im not, i just struggle. And i dont feel any pain just discomfort, some times my pulse accelerates and beats fast suddenly, and i do feel slightly dizzy at times randomly. Do you think i have a strangulated hernia as well? Can it be fixed after having it for a while?
IN WHICH LAYER DID YOU PLACED MESH?
JUST BENEATH THE ANT.RECTUS SHEATH??
The mesh is placed either in the preperitoneal space below the rectus sheath or intraperitoneal under the peritoneum.
I had this hernia after c section six month since 4 years
Thank you for your comments.
Why are hernia sacs cut out sometimes versus being pushed back into place
There is no specific rationale to removing versus reducing a hernia sac. Both work very well and are commonly performed.
Do you always need a mesh? Does that mesh ever cause problems later on, like years later?
Mesh is not always required and is used depending on the patient and the size of the hernia.
Very informative video Dr. Can a little bit of pain 2 inches below the belly button symptom of a hernia after working out? No bulge, can cough and strain with no paain, just a little pain of you push it? Thank you again

Please tell me that is there any method to cure it without surgery & also can i use hernia belt for it, will it be useful. Also, will my inguinal hernia also cause femoral hernia.

Unfortunately hernias do not heal themselves and would need surgery to repair them. That being said, patients with no symptoms could certainly just watch their hernia without surgery.
The surgery is roughly under $4,000, that's not bad, I might go there.
Thank you for your comments. We would be happy to take good care of you.
Can a patient get this type of procedure done and then if they lose weight, can they get a tummy tuck and another belly button made despite having a mesh underneath their original belly button?
Hernias are often repaired before or after abdominoplasties.
I had my open umbilical surgery on Monday. I already feel great. The pain I felt after is what I would describe as doing an 8 hour ab workout the day before. To be honest, the most discomfort that I felt was the dime sized blisters that broke as a result of an allergy to the surgical tape.
One thing that happened that wasn’t planned was I was trying to pee 4 hours after the surgery and I popped off all of my steristrips. So, I had a open wound that “oozed” onto my dressing. My wife is an RN in the plastics/bariatrics unit at one of our local hospitals. So, she just re-applied the steristrips per the surgeons advice. I did find it odd that I had no stitches on the incision site. I only had stitches on my abdominal wall (I wasn’t given the mesh). The biggest downside is I cannot get back to lifting weights for a month. As a comparison, I had sinus surgery/septoplasty/turbinate shaving in March and that was leaps and bounds worse pain wise afterwards.
Thank you for your comments. Good luck in your recovery.
Had umbrical hernia surgery 8mnths back but why does it keep on hurting after my periods en to make the matter worse now the left right and lower abdomen hurts alot am really scared doctor what could be the cause
It would difficult for us to comment on your specific situation. Seeing your surgeon would be the next best step.
I had this done last week , no mesh . When can I realistically start core exercise safely
We allow our patients to return to lifting and exercising after 3 weeks.
I had my surgery two days ago and feels like someone’s curling their finger in my stomach still but I don’t think I got a mesh liner in my surgery
Thanks for sharing your comments.
What if you only have a regular prolene mesh?
Non coated meshes can not be used in the peritoneal cavity and thus would need to be placed in the pre-peritoneal, retro-muscular or onlay positions.

Was the whole operation done under LA..???
Most patients are under general anesthesia with an LMA.
Does the mesh eventually dissolve?
Most meshes used for hernia repairs are permanent and do not absorb.
Is this under local or general anesthesia ?
It can be performed under both, but we usually choose general for the comfort of the patient.
