2018 Mazda CX-9 GT - The Anti-Boring Family Crossover

  • After 2 years on the market, Mazda's biggest SUV still impresses with its torque rich turbo engine, responsive steering, agile handling, and sleek design. However, its tight cargo area, lack of usable storage cubbies, and infotainment system in need of an upgrade may put a few buyers off. We still think its the most fun to drive large crossover in the segment, but how much does that really matter for people looking at a CUV like this?

Mazda by far makes the best designed vehicles out of all the Japanese brands. I mean toyota and nissan make pretty stylish cars too but it's something about kodo design language that really makes their lineup stand out among the rest.

This car has a strong luxurious feeling to it, the styling sort of reminds me of the Lexus line. Plus, their reliable quality, very good pricing, sporty performance, and decent depreciation value make me respect Mazda a lot. Awesome review Sofyan!

"Average reliability"? I've owned 14 cars since 1990 and 5 of them were and are still Mazdas. My 2000 Protege still works great at 290K miles, something my "above average reliability (false statement by Consumer Reports)" 2011 Audi never had when it almost died at 79K miles after oil leaks and a blown cata-converter. Average reliability is something you would honestly call a Kia/Hyundai or even a Ford, not a highly engineered Japanese brand like Mazda.

If anything, I've become even more enamored of my 2016 CX-9 Signature 1.5 yrs after purchase as a 'leftover' in Jan. '17. Reliable, fun to drive, luxurious and trouble-free for 18,000 mi., it's such a good vehicle that I admit that I'm 'torn'. On one hand I wish U.S. crossover shoppers were buying it in the volume it deserves. Then again... I enjoy not pulling up beside another one at every single stoplight. Likely because it hasn't been 'over-exposed', it still looks 'fresh' and continues to turn-heads and draw complements in all-quarters.

I drive since new a 2009 Mazda 3 s hatchback 2.3 with 5 speed auto and 189,000 miles. I have been dumping money lately for suspension parts at all four corners and a trans module. A trans module is not a rebuild. At the end of the last 5000 mile oil change interval I got back from a 2000 mile Marathon trip in 50 hours. Car ran like a champ. Did not burn or leak a drop of synthetic oil.

"Your never thought you wanted a fun to drive family vehicle until you drive a Mazda.." Yup, that is what happened to me. I was bent looking for a 2019 AWD Highlander, when I test drove one at a used car dealership, it felt like a 10-year old used car. Then the dealer let me test drove a 2018 AWD CX9 also on their used car lot. I went home with the CX9.

Just traded in my 3.6L Outback for the 2018 CX9 GT. If I only had 1 vehicle, I would have kept the Subaru and I'm still a die-hard Subaru fan. The Outback is definately a more capable AWD vehicle and gets better MPG (about 2.5 mpg better than the Mazda).
Since I have a 4wd Tundra to get through the snow or go camping, I just wanted a nice cruiser for everyday driving and for the long drives I frequently do. I couldn't be happier with this beauty. I will rarely have use for the 3rd row seats and I get about the same cargo space as the Outback with them folded down. Still, nice to have the 7 seat option. While there's still some road noise in the CX9, it's a lot quieter than the wind and road noise I was getting in the Outback. Overall, a much more pleasant drive with pretty much the same capabilities as the Outback that I had.

I'd buy this car twice over! Saves money for repair parts compared to the other cars these zombie luxury gadgets people want.

Thanks for the review, this is a very good SUV. I just bought it a week ago. I researched for 3 months and drove almost every 7 seater SUV in this price segment, and picked it over Kodiaq, All Space, Sorento, Santa Fe, Peugeot 5008... Drives like a dream and good gas mileage so far. My friend who bought All Space a month before is regretting his decision. It's a class above the cars I just mentioned; tho 5008 has as nice interior, and unique futuristic style, esp the exterior looks sharp, but its weak engine and reliability question marks is what deterred me. Very smooth and quiet ride, very fun to drive.

I have owned a GT for about 2 months. I love it! The driving dynamics is what won me over the competitors. 2 things I don’t like:
1- The A-pillar is huge and causes a major blind spot. Entire cars disappear when taking a left at an intersection.
2- There is a lot of glare off the dashboard when it’s sunny.

Really really like these, we cross shopped this with an MDX...I wanted to get the CX-9 but it fell short on third row, cargo area, and power. The cargo capacity of the CX-9 was essentially the same as the two-row Ford Edge we were replacing, which wasn’t sufficient for us all the time. Also the interior storage on the CX-9 didn’t measure up. For a three row, I wish they would have gone just a bit bigger. But I liked the interior and exterior design better on the CX-9, and generally love what Mazda is doing.

I own one and I'm very satisfied. Real world daily driving, the transmission and engine powerband is perfect. I think the 6 speed is fine, adding two more gears will make the transmission downshift much when doing highway speed passes and acceleration and could be annoying. It has low end torque you can use with the kind of daily driving a suv owner would do. Only negative comment I have is that the Infotainment system starts up so slow so don't expect punching in your nav destination once you start the car. I feel like Mazda should have used a faster hardware for fast boot time. Also when folding the second row seats to access the third row is a bit challenging esp. my kids. It doesn't fold back to where it was. Glad to see that the 2018 model modified this a little bit but still can use more improvement.

I bought the 2018 GT AWD with then black interior. Got a dealer driven "used" ( sold as new) for 34k. It is so much more car that all of it's competitors for that money. Yes it is not the biggest interior compared to it's exterior dimensions and I can see the front cabin feeling a bit snug for larger people but for me it's perfect. We don't have kids and don't need more interior room so it's fine. I don't want a "pano-roof". Not sure why every review is so critical of that. How many times does the average person one their roof? Not that much. I had the dealer install the Car Play/Android and now the infotainment is completely updated so the car is not missing anything other than cooled seats ( which it now offers). It is such an over-looked vehicle.

Great car. Just got one. Not sure why having a fantastic 6 speed automatic that works better than some of the new 9 and 10speed boxes. If they could put an over-drive in it and kick the high speed rpms down then maybe but its fine with the 6. I'm not thrilled with 19-20 mpg so far but it's a big vehicle so it is what it is. Best value in the segment and beat's an MDX in my book.

Beautiful car. 91 octane in CA keeps it in the 220HP range which makes it underpowered when fully laden. I Smooth V6 would do wonders for this vehicle.

6:12 I got onto this car during an auto-show. I've found it difficult to open the door given that there wasn't a place to grab onto where our elbow sits as he was describing in the video. If a car shows up from behind and you want to close the door quickly, that seems challenging.

For the price point you can get better room and performance either a low mileage 2 years old Chevy Tahoe, or a BMW X5 i. Both are superior and reliable. The X5 turbo inline 6 with the 8 speed is super smooth. I own sedan version 335 with same engine but with 100K miles on odometer which has been very reliable.

This car right here...is my dream car...except it need to be White and the 2016 version...dude I'm saving up already. Also it's really funny how this car looks more luxurious than a Mercedes or BMW or any of those so called luxurious car.

Had Ford not had such a big influence on Mazda in production and development, as it bought more shares of Mazda in the 80's to mid 90's Mazda would be as big as Honda. They made excellent cars and were better known than Honda. People use to think of motorcycles, when they thought of Honda. Now that Ford is no longer an influence it's no surprise Mazda is competitive again.

Love the review, and I really like Mazdas even though I've yet to own one. Still, imho the interior looks a bit dated for a 2018 model, specifically the lcd display and the plastics. Now, it is a really attractive offering especially for larger families.

At 2:52 , I kind of wish Mazda move the front windshield up couple inches, since it is a 4 cylinders, to create more cargo space behind 3rd row.

Youre pushing the seat back wrong. Leave it tilted and it'll go back to the original position, then initiate lock.

I hate when Car companies call there new model by weird number codes: Mercedes G-Class 550, Mazda XyZ 5.679, Honda CR-V, Toyota Rav4. Jeep doesn't have this problem: Compass, Cherokee, Renegade, Wrangler, and now Gladiator. Thank you Jeep.

I was looking at one of these in my country the base cx9 cost $125k which is about $62kUS. Insanely over priced . the Prado or the landcruiser is around $55kUS. But the mazda is by far the most stylish, economic and sexy. I think it is worth it

Sofyan, I think by now, you should start marking cars down for having protruding headrests (And no forward & Backward adjustability). I had this problem with my 2012 Accord and then with my 2016 Mazda CX-5. I think most cars made these days will have this problem due to Federal regulations mandating Headrests be moved closer to the head. Those who like to sit with their seat back reclined more to the back will not notice this problem. It is the rest of us who like to have their seat back be more on the upright position that will suffer. The irony is that due to a neck problem, I like to keep my seat back on an upright position, following doctor’s instructions, but then the headrest pushes my head forward, causing more neck problems. The reason I say you should mark cars down is that with advancement in technology these days, there is no excuse for car manufactures not to come up with a solution to the Headrest problem. It needs to be adjustable (Not up and down, but Forward and backward).
