I know it’s been over 4 years since this was released, but this video’s intro is one of the best put-together montage I’ve ever seen in a car review video: the visuals, colors, angles and music couldn’t blend any better if one tried. Well done Mr Goose! 👍
wow.. this is what you call review..so much better than the others. the best person to give reviews on cars... it gives us piece by piece detail on how the car drives... WOW
hands down the best car videos I've ever seen. After 20 years in the auto industry, from Deawoo to Delorean, Pontiac to Porsche, these are the most informative, hands-on, "real world everyday" reviews I have yet witnessed.
Your reviews are absolute quality. You touch on many things other reviewers do not, such as the minor negatives that might irk you on a day to day basis. You are providing really valuable information to both the enthusiasts and regular people. Thanks, keep it up!
The Germans gave up on the Wankel and Mazda took the design and nearly perfected it. The Germans gave up on trying to eliminate carbon build up as a result of direct injection. They (BMW & VAG)tell their customers to deal with it and get the costly cleaning service. Again, Mazda made it better by clever engineering. Thank you Mazda.
You mean cars that you can afford? Ok. Hate to break it to you but there are plenty of humans who can afford Ferraris and Porsches. Don't hate. Congratulate.
You maybe get asked this a lot - but please do reviews of cars that are 4-5 years into their lifespan. How they’re ageing, reliability, outdatedness, tech etc. it’s relevant to viewers like me (and I imagine many others) who can only afford to buy used cars only. Thanks! Love the channel. A fan from Switzerland
Your reviews have incredible "shooting" idk the right word for it. but i love watching your reviews no matter what car because the videos are just incredible. Plus your sense of humor and honesty is awesome as well.
Great review, good quality video in HD, great edit. Great info. BTW: The plastic on the wheels are there to avoid rust issues. The Power rear liftgate have programmable height adjustment. The HUD can be turned off forever if you use the memory settings on the seat. Regarding the complexity of the engine, Mazda is giving 3 years or 6 years extended warranty. A great machine, not the bulky and not fun driving on Pilot, Pathfinder, etc.
I know this is from 5 years ago, but your review was so thorough and full of great information. I just purchased a 2016 Mazda CX-9 and I agree with most of what you said, but so far, I absolutely love this SUV. I have always hated SUVs as I'm a car driver and love the ride cars provide, but the CX-9 kept the good parts about driving and I'm happy to have more space, while still having the power I need. Thanks for solid real review!
Thank you for all the effort you put into this review. It’s in depth and doesn’t paint the picture of xx is the best car ever like so many others. Nice to see a real gear head talking cars the right way.

+Riyad Kalla trying to cut out some of that sarcasm and leave it for the second follow-up video to the reviews it just makes more sense thanks for the comment
something that was bothering me is that your complaint about the engine power falling off in the upper RPMs is something Mazda has stated is by design, but you never mention that. Mazda engineers have stated that they deliberately tuned the output to be in the most usable and applicable range for daily driving for more efficiency. mid range acceleration and highway passing is supposed to be this vehicle's bread and butter. otherwise a solid review all around
+Chris Droste Yes its by design by almost every company that does the new generation of Eco turbo motors, all tuned for torque output and not high rpm output, largely because of compression ratio and their desire to not require premium fuel. I don't say it because I assumed its known but your right I should mention it going forward.
@@savagegeese Premium fuel is not a problem for me. I prefer to use ethanol-free fuel anyway and it's earlier to find ethanol-free premium than ethanol-free regular.

I bought one. Love it. Grille included. Heres a fun grille fact esp for the haters. Do you know the grille LIGHTS UP on the Signature Edition? The plastic cladding around the wheels act as splash guards for the most part.
Something I wish all manufacturers did was include one touch up and down on all windows like the CX-9 sig. All 7 buttons are one touch up and down. I think it is worth noting.
As an owner of a 2016 CX-9, this review is pretty accurate. Only things I might disagree with are squeaks and rattles (Haven't noticed any with mine), and the HUD. Personally I don't think it's too bright, and it does dim at night. Otherwise great review!
Great review! I LOVE that you actually got under the car with a mechanic. Mazda has made a huge mistake by discontinuing the V6. The mechanic was spot on in mentioning the giant increase in the complexity of adding a turbocharger. For folks who keep their cars for 8-10 years this complexity translates into much greater cost of ownership. What do you do when the turbo quits at65k miles. It’s decision time folks. Do you write a check for $2500-3000 to fix it or do you try to sell it? With the V6 there is no need for a turbo and you will save big $$ in maintenance over the long run. So what if it doesn’t get better mpg? Turbos are for unsuspecting suckers.
@@benbelap I'm 3.5 years into ownership and I still love it. 35K miles. No squeaks or rattles. Drives like brand new. The only thing I've done to it have been oil changes, filters and I just did rear brakes last weekend.
Just wanted to note a few of the stranger things about my all new 2016 CX9. Having previously owned a 2010 CX9 I was looking forward to the side mirrors dipping when selecting reverse, a very handy feature which saved me from wheel rash on many occasions but alas Mazda in their wisdom have decided to delete this feature. To make matters worse the mirrors cannot even be folded away, a feature the much smaller Mazda 3 has. Another thing that irritates me is the accelerator pedal is lower than the brake pedal by enough so as to not allow you to slide your foot across when braking. You have to raise your foot off the gas pedal which is a pain. Why are the taillights, headlights and fog lights all LED but the daytime running lights are old fashioned bulbs? When reversing why don't the guide lines on the screen move as you turn the wheel like they do on cars half the price? Why when altering the backlighting on the dash does nothing happen when rotating the adjustment knob then all of a sudden the screen goes dark (or bright) in the blink of an eye. I have never experienced torque steer like I do when accelerating hard on this car (all wheel drive version). In between both Mazdas I owned a Q5 and Range Rover Evoque, apart from the aforementioned oddities I believe that the CX9 is a much better car than the Evoque and on a par with the Audi.
"They'll never drop the 2.5 turbo engine into the 3, 6, or cx-5" aged like milk lmao. Long time watcher, first time commenter. Love the vids. Glad this one was recommended to me while I'm cross shopping this and the cx-50!
Hands down best video review I had watched in a while. I will be buying an SUV soon and this was one of our choices. After watching this,I'm definitely going for it. Thank you!
These are the best reviews around. You push press cars right to the edge in real world situations, and you’re not biased at all. If I’m putting my wife and kids in a new car, I want to know how the car will really behave in a tight spot. Thank you for what you do.
Incredible in depth review. Thanks so much. As good as it was, there was one glaring error. While they are not badged, the model reviewed is a Grand Touring model, not a Signature model as he said. The Signature model comes with Auburn Nappa leather seats. Nappa leather is softer, wears better, resists stains, is colorfast, and breaks up all the black in the vehicle. It does not look like a 5 year old child from a labor camp sewed it. It also has Rosewood in place of the cheap shiny plastic he was complaining about. Plus there's additional LED lighting including a bright mode on the 3 dome lights that turn night into day to locate lost items. While the Touring and Grand Touring trims are nice, the Signature trim is crazy nice for a Mazda, and competes with luxury brands, Ergonomics are great, you'll use the armrests as they are right where you want them. Nav controls on the console right where your hand lies. While not available when it came out, the nav system can be upgraded to Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for $150, plus a few hours of a handyman's time. It is a great ski vehicle. Most people buy 3 row CUVs to avoid the look of a minivan, and end up with a CUV that drives and handles like a minivan. Coming from a G37 coupe, I cringed at needing a big vehicle. It is great in the twisties in the mountains. Most fun you can have in a 3 row vehicle that can tow 3,500lbs. Turbos lose much less power than normally aspirated vehicles at elevation. I live at 9300ft, and run regular and it still is fun. If you have a trip to the mountains, treat yourself to some premium and really enjoy the performance, otherwise regular is fine for most fueling. Extra height allows driving in deep snow or getting to a campsite or launching some toys you are towing. It drives like a smaller vehicle that is lower to the ground, which is quite impressive. Utility and a sporty drive are no longer mutually exclusive. I disagree about the HUD and nav display. i appreciate the info without having to take my eyes off the road, especially when I'm towing a couple ATVs on tight hairpin turns on twisty mountain roads, Towing is good, and on the rearview camera when you're in reverse, you can see your hitch ball to easily align your trailer. Biggest fault I noticed, is the seat preset controls are located on the side on the front seats. If you are of average height or shorter, you will notice when you sit down you will often hit the buttons and the seat starts moving. i will likely place some raised material around that switch, to avoid that from happening. Thanks again for the great review!
And it's made in Hiroshima Japan. While in theory I'd loe to buy a made in the US vehicle, the build quality is just that much better there. Rosewood accents are made by luthiers (guitar makers). The Signature really is that much nicer. If you buy it in the Machine Gray color, it hides the plastic cladding. While I don't like the look of cladding, they put down crushed stone on snowy days, which is often here, and without that cladding, there would be lots of rock chips and eventually rust around the wheel wells. The grey color is a great compromise, as the cladding prevents chipping, and the color hides the cladding.
Geez, man. If UA-cam gave out awards for 'Best Auto Review Channel'...👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I just might unsub to all the other ones now. I'm aiming to pick one of these up, and this is the review I needed to see. 👊🏽
You really should check out the 2019 model. Heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, surround view camera, trajectory lines on rear view camera, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay... check, check, check. We just leased one after initially looking at up-market models (MDX and CX-90) but the value proposition on the CX-9 just couldn’t be beat. Got everything we wanted in a family hauler and saved $500/month!
Thanks Mark! Was waiting on this. Much appreciated. What is your or Scott's take on CX9 capability to handle the salt in our region of Chicagoland to fend off rust?
This is very helpful in my looking at a used '16 Touring with 26k miles. It's not certified pre owned but it still has about 5 months left on the new car warranty. Another plus, the price is $22k. You addressed the possible issues the turbo 4 so well. And the other Pros/Cons were also explained well. Great job.
Love the presentation, and mix of on road and hoist talk. I was watching your other videos and found myself watching a CX9 for the heck of it, lol, good job, subscriber gained.
A functional mute? Is that like a blind person who can see? If you can speak you are no kind of mute. Mute means totally non verbal. There's no partial mute.
That felt fender lining is going to get built up with ice and fall off, it happened to my Acura TL, now it sounds like an accord you can hear ever bit of gravel that gets thrown up by tires.
Really enjoy your reviews. One of the best car review channels out there, and has become my go-to source. The time and effort you put into editing/content really shows, so thank you and keep up the great work! When car shopping, I really wanted to go with a Mazda 6, but the lack of power was a huge disappointment. I'd be curious to see if this new engine makes it there. I eventually ended up going with a Hyundai Genesis, and your positive reviews provided extra validation. So far, no major complaints and a lot of car for the $... Again, great reviews with straight-forward and relevant commentary. You deserve to have a ton more subscribers.
Between the CX-9 Touring and Pilot EXL, which one would you recommend for a family ( driving, reliability and interior space/quality are main factors) Thanks for any responses
I’m very impressed by the technology in the AWD system and engine. I’m still glad i went for the 2016 Honda Pilot Elite. It does have a mini van shape but it beats the CX9 in a few areas that are important. Space, comfort, storage, has a V6 engine and no Amazon kindle for the center console. Even though it’s supremely comfortable and smooth, you can drive it and have fun. The V6 engine is powerful and has the rated HP/TQ with 87. The AWD is a SHAWD unit from Acura, without the badge; it’s very impressive. You should definitely review it.
The decision would be easy for me...go with the Mazda DNA. I learned to drive on a Mazda RX3 and lived to tell about it, what a fun car to drive that was. I also bought a Protege ES new in 2000 (a few years before they switched to calling it the 3). That car was a great balance of fun to drive yet economical and reliable.
The black plastic paneling is there to reduce the effect of mass or overall size on a car. If they were painted the same as the body color, the car would look much, much fatter/wider which is not appealing. Many manufacturers do this trick/effect with black panels.
We put savaged geese in gumbo's down here in Lafayette. Only thing better is a duck gumbo. Love your reviews and I'd like to see a 2016-17 Camaro V8 and V6 review and a couple of sports car reviews as well. Why not.
beautiful design and execution, styling and attention to detail this puts some luxury brands to shame please make a v6 or v6 turbo or v6 hybrid or 4 turbo hybrid as an option. Mazda larger cars need larger engines options,
Only way Mazda could implement a V-6 is to source one through a joint venture. The lineup is too small and sales too low for them to develop one in house. Costs hundreds of millions to develop an engine. Even Volvo, as a luxury brand of only larger vehicles, only produces 4-cylinder engines now. Regardless, the CX-9 is the most responsive powertrain in class. Drive it. Makes the V-6's feel sluggish in normal driving conditions. Accelerating hard after 75 mph is where the V-6 shines but how often are you doing this with your family risking getting pulled over?
Great review as usual, high standards bar none. The 17:00 Geese pun was cool. 19:00 the small noises / rattles are the typical OCD when in a quiet car...
Yeah you're right. That plastic around the wheel well and bumper is an eyesore. I guess you'll have to opt for the dark grey color and in signature trim to blend that said eyesore.
They are pretty snazzy. I kind of wish Honda would market the SH-AWD name more aggressively. I think it would attract sales, especially with how well Subaru is doing with their symmetrical awd branding. Subaru's never had an amazing awd system outside of the STI, but they market it very well. Having been a long term Subaru owner, I will say the all time design and symmetry do go a long way for stability and balance of the system. For this a Subaru has always felt better in rougher terrain than a Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4. ABS based traction control is common among all brands now, so the advantage is more so in how the awd systems are programmed more than anything else, and any system can be quite good when programmed right (and the systems don't overheat or break with highly uneven power delivery). It isn't until you start adding some more advanced control devices that things get interesting. Some brands started young like Mitsubishi with the Evo. Other brands grew into it. Honda's had a very good system for a while with their SH-AWD. I'd be great if they just kind of offered it in everything. Just think how badass the new Civic Si would be with SH-AWD. They'd be right there with the STI, Golf R, Focus RS, and so on.

+Jay Thomas Some of the highlight issue is just the cons of being a solo shooter trying to get things done quickly and doing video in prime daylight. I often over expose on purpose because of sun angles. I hate when highlights are blown as well.
Great review! (And I am not even in the market, but I watch anyways) hope one day you can find a vehicle which gets them geese into your vehicle. And then who knows where that may lead to.
Great review as always. We *need* a CX-7 to fit between these. CX-5 is cool, but an infant seat is not going to fit behind my 5' 11" wife, and I will have my tubes tied before I need a 3rd row. Plus if I ever did need a 3rd row, minivans work so much better. The 3rd rows in crossovers are vestigial at best, with useless cargo spaces to boot. The worst of both worlds. A CX-7 with this thing's huge back seat, the turbo engine and a huge useful trunk would be perfect. Hopefully Mazda follows through.
Awesome review as usual. thorough, detailed, factual. I'm getting a Signature. Needed a hauler, but didn't want a AWD mini van nor did I want a bland interior. Fun to drive, responsive, intuitive, and comfortable. Very driver centric... Back ordered from factory in Hiroshima, but I think well worth the wait.

While the Touring and Grand Touring trims are nice, the Signature trim is crazy nice for a Mazda, and competes with luxury brands,
Ergonomics are great, you'll use the armrests as they are right where you want them.
The soundtrack at the beginning of this episode, is just chilling. I love it!
Excellent and very thorough reviews, enjoy watching them. Technically the music and video's quality is top notch.. thanks.
Hands-down the best car review vid I've ever seen. You know your stuff.
Another GREAT review again Mike... thanks, Horace
He has BY FAR the best video reviews. How is he not more popular????
Probably cus he drove towards those geese & tried to lure them into his vehicle 😲
First timr I've laughed at one of your videos when you were exercising your arms with the backseats. 😂
This was a great, very informative, honest review. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Thanks Mark! Was waiting on this. Much appreciated.
What is your or Scott's take on CX9 capability to handle the salt in our region of Chicagoland to fend off rust?
Love the way these Mazda SUV's complement each other and provide a touch of something different to each segment
Would love this if this was a wagon. Great no bullshit review as always. Keep up the good work
+Cervelo R5 Agreed, this drive train would be great in a Mazda6 Wagon.
In Pennsylvania it would be designated as a wagon on your title. How is a wagon any different?
This is very helpful in my looking at a used '16 Touring with 26k miles. It's not certified pre owned but it still has about 5 months left on the new car warranty. Another plus, the price is $22k. You addressed the possible issues the turbo 4 so well. And the other Pros/Cons were also explained well. Great job.
The explanation of the exhaust manifold was especially great.
Love the presentation, and mix of on road and hoist talk. I was watching your other videos and found myself watching a CX9 for the heck of it, lol, good job, subscriber gained.
I thought Turbowski was a mute!
He's a functional mute.
He is, that's his ass doing all the talk
A functional mute? Is that like a blind person who can see? If you can speak you are no kind of mute. Mute means totally non verbal. There's no partial mute.
Stevie G Settle down there sunshine. Ok, fine..."Selective mutism". Happy now? Try on a sense of humor as well, it goes a long way in this world.
His own rev build-up is lagging, that's all. Pretty standard problem really.
Isn't this the Grand Touring trim, not the Signature? I don't think Soul Red is available on the Sig.
+Parrots and Potatoes It may have been pre production or all the paper work I got on the car was wrong. Key, window sticker stated it was signature.
Picking up mine tomorrow, super excited. Mazda should pay you commission.
Every video from Savage Geese is A1
That felt fender lining is going to get built up with ice and fall off, it happened to my Acura TL, now it sounds like an accord you can hear ever bit of gravel that gets thrown up by tires.
Top notch review as usual with excellent editing , way to go guys
Best editing and musical reviewer
Thank you for the detailed review. I've requested this car a few times and I was not disappointed.
The black plastic paneling is there to reduce the effect of mass or overall size on a car. If they were painted the same as the body color, the car would look much, much fatter/wider which is not appealing. Many manufacturers do this trick/effect with black panels.
Now that is what I call a review! Freaking awesome man.
We put savaged geese in gumbo's down here in Lafayette. Only thing better is a duck gumbo. Love your reviews and I'd like to see a 2016-17 Camaro V8 and V6 review and a couple of sports car reviews as well. Why not.
+John D Ill see if we can get the GMs. Our fleets in Chicago suck
Appreciate that. Seriously when I see wildlife like that I only think of eating.
Very nice cinematography after the intro.
+stephane matis Thanks!
beautiful design and execution, styling and attention to detail this puts some luxury brands to shame
please make a v6 or v6 turbo or v6 hybrid or 4 turbo hybrid as an option.
I was really hoping you would get a crack at this car! Very happy to see some unfiltered feedback on this rig.
Really great visuals on this video. Nice job.
Great review as usual, high standards bar none. The 17:00 Geese pun was cool. 19:00 the small noises / rattles are the typical OCD when in a quiet car...
Only the most helpful and informative car review video I've ever seen. NBD.
Loving the extended detailed review under the car of the suspension and drive train.
Love your videos! Just bought a car and I am still watching these...lol
This channel is going to be big as dougs channel with this type of quality work!
Yeah you're right. That plastic around the wheel well and bumper is an eyesore. I guess you'll have to opt for the dark grey color and in signature trim to blend that said eyesore.
I appreciate that SAVAGEGEESE is the only car reviewers always talking about CARBON BUILD UP ON DIRECT INJECTION ENGINES.
8:08 The AWD systems in the new Pilot and Ridgeline aren't like the typical run of the mill AWD systems, they are essentially renamed SH-AWD
Videography and review thoughts unique and excellent as always. Thanks for the content!
Love your vids! Im guessing you are a sony guy?? Full Frame A7's??? Any way keep up the good work these are real reviews.. I really enjoy them.
If you get a chance I'd love for you to check out the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T Ultimate! Pllzz
+guitardude0909 I use Sony for action cams but always use panasonic for main video, GH4. The A7S is so overkill for web delivery. I get so much out of the GH4 and it hopefully shows.
Ohh snaps!! Yeah it totally does.. That GH4 is flawless.. Im a fujifilm guy myself.. More of a stills photographer. Thanks for getting back to me i appreciate your time.
+Jay Thomas Some of the highlight issue is just the cons of being a solo shooter trying to get things done quickly and doing video in prime daylight. I often over expose on purpose because of sun angles. I hate when highlights are blown as well.
Hello, can you please review 2017 Honda Ridgeline. Thank you!
yes, the Ridgeline pls
This was one of the best in depth review I have ever seen! I would love to see the 2017 Durango and the 2017 explorer like this as well if possible!
