    I own the 120-pc set from FC-Polychromos and just love all colors. The pastels you featured a while back from Holbein are something else though.

    Thanks for the awesome comparison video! I have all three brands now. Just picked up the full sets of Holbein and Pablos but have not had much chance to play around with them due to family matters taking me away from home. I had two Pablos (Bluish Pale and Jade Green) that I bought open stock previously which convinced me to purchase the full set. Bluish Pale has become one of my favourite pencils ever. i had started doing the colour chart for my Holbeins and I love them too. I think both brands will go well with my Polychromos pencils (they are my favourite in terms of tactile feel).

      +brushjunkie Thank you! I am very happy you enjoyed the comparison! Bluish pale and mouse grey are some of my favorite Pablo exclusive shades. They're fantastic. I know what you mean about tactile feel. They all have a different feel to them even though they're all oil based. I'm happy to hear you've gotten all 3 brands. Hope you enjoy them for many years to come!

    Thanks! this gives me something to think about. I'm a watercolour artist but I have been recently contemplating getting into coloured pencils and maybe mixing the two to give my watercolour pieces a bit more depth.
    By what you were saying it sounds like my best bet is the Polychromos.
    Thanks again!

      +Nathan Dixon You're very welcome! Thank you for your kind words and feedback. I use both watercolor and colored pencil, and I can tell you while they're different mediums, they're both beautiful in their own ways. Colored pencil and watercolor work beautifully together!

    It's interesting that you say that the FC polys have a good range of aquatic colours- I find that my 60 set is very yellow and red-heavy (although the 120 set appears better balanced) . The 60 set seems to have a lot of 'artists' colours in that the colours in the set are intensely pigmented and that there are very few pale colours or colours that have a white undertone. I imagine that this is why a lot of newer artists prefer Prismacolors over Polychromos because it's easy to get the right colour fresh from the pencil- Polys require a bit more layering and pressure control to use, but result in a massive colour selection.
    I am so interested in those Holbein pencils... They look so good! Maybe one day! Another great video and review, excellent work Jane! :)

    • @ArtistJane
      @ArtistJane  7 років тому +7

      +Claudia Sketches Thank you, Claudia! I always love your insight! I'll take a look at the 60 set bc this is good to know for future reference. Polys do require more layering but I find give a softer, more realistic look in the end. After using Prismas for so long, when I see a piece done in Prismas, I can tell. They have a certain appearance to them, which isn't necessarily bad, it just is what it is. Prismas are good for those with arthritis where you don't have to put as much pressure on them. I'm finding with the early onset arthritis I have, that I have to limit the amount of work I do at times with colored pencils. As much as I love them, they are a medium that demand your time and involvement.

    • @ClaudiaSketches
      @ClaudiaSketches 7 років тому +2

      Thanks for responding! :D
      I totally know what you mean with the prisma-look. They generally result in a thickly applied appearance and I find that it's quite difficult to achieve subtle nuance and texture with them. I'm experimenting a lot to see if I can coax another side out of them, but as they are I still like them- especially in conjunction with Polys.
      I have hypermobility which means I get hand fatigue and cramp a little faster than most. I find that I struggle with the very hard Derwent Studios but haven't run into issues with either Polys or Prisma yet- although I do make sure to take regular breaks and do gentle hand stretches when I remember. I tend to do underpaintings for CP work- partly because it's a lot faster and I can be a bit antsy at times, but also because it helps reduce the time spent using pencils.
      It may sound a bit crazy, but I'm curious to see if those pencil grips help over time- y'know, those rubber things that kids put on pencils and pens to make them easier to hold? I'm thinking that a slightly wider and less slippery surface will mean that you don't have to grip as tightly to have the same control. I used to do something similar when writing my longer exams a few years back- I used a rubber band wrapped around my pen a few times and that seemed to help a bit.

    Odorless does not mean nontoxic! I find the most accomplished artist can make any pencil work! I like that you put several on the bottom and several on the top then deside what works best for you, since all pencils have oil and wax I would imagine any pencils would work well together. And pencils with similar recipes would work best together. I have also seen some amazing artwork done with Holbein pencils by Amie Howard Art you can check out her channel on UA-cam as well. Thanks for giving us your expertise and very enjoyable video. Please take care, be safe and have a lovely day!

      Don't trust the public when it comes to pencils.
      Most adults haven't upgraded their knowledge since childhood.
      Pencils ✏️ have engineering concepts such as lead diameter and radius.
      Nobody outside the manufacturers bothers to look at those things.
      That is your first indication that YOU'RE WRONG.
      Manufacturers sharpen pencils ✏️.
      Pencil users DON'T SHARPEN PENCILS.
      You wear down the lead to a point that has facets in it.
      Then you maintain those facets all the way along the pencil ✏️

    Could you explain why you use an oil-based pencil like it’s a wax-based? I’m not judging, don’t get me wrong 😊 But I noticed that you didn’t build up layers in this video. The colors of polychromos look a bit streaky after you put on the color of polychromos.
    I’ve learned so far that, although they are wonderful, the polychromos needs sooo many (light) layers if you want to get a really smooth surface (skin in my case).

    I have yet to try the Holbein pencils, but I love their watercolours haha. Irrelevant, but I have faith in their quality 😉
    That said, I LOOOOOOOOVE the Polychromos. They just..ugh they feel so niiice to use!! Can't get over it every time I use them. HOWEVER, what I don't like about them is the colour selection in their smaller sets. As someone who doesn't like buying gigantic sets simply because I don't need a lot of colours..it feels really annoying that their 24 and 36 colour sets don't have a single flesh tone nor a pale pink nor a baby blue tone. Frustrating for the kind of work I tend to do. Even their 60 colour set has only a handful of SEMI pale tones. I'm having to consider getting their 120 set simply because of all the lovely colours that are only available in their set. Both Pablo and Holbein have beautifully balanced sets, which is a real blessing I have to say. I used the Pablos years ago as a 6 year old [got em as a gift] and loved them. Looking forward to buying them again, I have fond memories of using them. And ofcourse I have to try me some Holbein coloured pencils too, they do look wonderful. They also have a separate pastel set, which I think is awesome! Tombow Irojiten has some wonderful sets and you can choose smaller blister packs to buy as well, wish more companies sold their pencils in themed sets like that..
    Thanks so much for such a nice comparison video! It was quite interesting seeing how these 3 stacked up against each other.

      I've recently tried the Caran full blender over Polychromos. I'm not sure why but when i came back the next day there was a white-ish haze (wax bloom?) over all the parts where i used the blender. I went over the areas again with poly's and it went away. Im not sure if i used the blender too much or what. :/ Also, i noticed that if i have many layers down already, the blender sorta muddles and clumps the color....so i guess it's not really good beyond 2 or 3 layers. I'm a beginner in colored pencils though...so it might be user error.

    • @ooXChrissieXoo
      @ooXChrissieXoo 7 років тому

      I prefer the full blender on wax based pencil.
      Wax bloom is common through all wax based pencil. Some just don't look as bad as other brands. I don't like the full blender on oil based pencil. The same reason I don't mix wax based with oil based pencil. It's true with what Margaret said about the "muddles and clumps". The wax pushes the polychromos pigments around and make them clump together. This happened especially for the purples and blues. The wax also covers the vibrancy of some bright light blues. For some reason orange/yellow will blend nicely, but they have always done that with any blending technique lol
      But like always, I won't say this about everyone. I find myself working with colored pencil a little differently from how others do it.

    I know this is an older video, and you may not answer questions, but I was just curious why do you think the Holbein pencils have not been made available for sale on US-based art store sites, like Blick - and can only be purchased on eBay or Amazon?
    I just purchased the 150 set on Amazon today after drooling over them for the last month.
    To be honest though, I'd rather have bought them from an online art store because art stores take more care in the shipment of their fragile art supplies. (I discovered this issue when my box of CdA Luminance had been crushed on the corners when ordering from Prime. Thank goodness Caran'd'ache adds extra padding to the inside of their pencil packaging)
    Anyway, I had contacted Blick about this issue a month ago, since they sell every other Holbein product, but I have yet to recieve an answer as to why they do not carry Holbein Colored Pencils.

      +Sukumal Sinha I personally prefer Faber-Castell Polychromos over Derwent's Coloursoft but that's just me. That would be what I would advise you to get. However, it's like comparing apples to oranges. Derwent is wax based and soft, while Polychromos are oil based and firmer. They are smooth and don't have the wax bloom though that wax based pencils tend to have. I find I can layer more with oil based pencils like Polychromos. However, Coloursoft is a good pencil. I don't have any complaints with it. It's just not what I would prefer to use. I would buy Polychromos if I were you. It's worth the extra money you'll invest in them.

Unfortunately that set doesn't have much in the way of flesh tones, but since then I've been adding on pencils via open stock. • @ArtistJane
      @ArtistJane  7 років тому +1

      +jeansmx I'll be doing a future video on this, but in the meantime if you're looking for classic skin tones, stick to the umbers for shadows. Stick to midtones like raw sienna and medium flesh. Highlights and mid highlights can range from cream and white to light flesh. Those are the basics I can recommend. I do know Polychromos have their light, medium, and dark flesh tones. Also most skin tones that exist in acrylic and oil as I mentioned with the Sienna's and Umbers exist in colored pencil tones (at least with Polychromos).

      I would personally go with Polys first. I haven’t had a problem with Pablo’s being scratchy, and I’m pretty heavy handed at times with colored pencils. I do like that they sharpen to a point and you can get really good detail going with them, but in comparison, I’d recommend Polys first. You can’t beat their range of colors and vibrancy. The layering is a dream to work with.

    Hi, i was reading about holbeins colored pencils, and read it was a mixture of oil, wax, and fat... but that they keep their formula pretty secret. I know that all pencils have a lil of both and their classifying goes to whatever it has more of, but are the holbeins really oil based then? And not some secret formula mixture of the two that cant be classified either way?

      I just saw a video about Holbeins from a professional artist. She was unable to get satisfactory answer from them on how they test for Lightfastness. And since she sells artwork, she didn't feel like she could trust them to be lightfast. So she said she will not be buying any more or using what paints and pencils she already has. Colored pencils have an industry standard way of testing for how lightfast something is, but the Japanese are using a "proprietary method" instead. so it seems completely random as to whether they are really lightfast or not. To be one of the most expensive pencils out there, but not to comply with the industry standard seems misleading

    I guess I am just confused, because you said you only use oil based now. Which is obviously Polychromos. But Holbein and Pablo are both very waxy pencils. Regardless of what they are labeled as. All pencils are both oil and wax. Just depends on how much in their brands recipe. But Pablo's are extremely waxy pencils. Thats why they don't layer as well as Polychromos. Same with Holbein. You can tell how much wax is in a pencil by using sanded paper and powder blender. Since powder blender won't work with waxier pencils and only move the pigment of true oil colored pencils.

      This is a very old video, and I’d yet to find out about Pablo’s. I had read where they were oil based & really hadn’t noticed as much back then since I’d used pablos for details. Holbein are a mix of wax, oils, and fats. They are a unique hybrid kind of pencil and continue to remain one of my favorites. Since then, I use several different brands that are both oil and wax, just depending on the brand. I apologize for the confusion.

      @@ArtistJane Hi Jane from what I have read Caran Dache had said all pencils are a mixture of oil and wax. It just depends on the ratio some will have more wax than oil the Pablo probably have more oil than wax. Thank you for the demonstration.

    I still use the Prismacolor pencils. I am still trying to figure out color theory and layering. Are there good ways to learn color theory outside of art school? By color theory I mean what colors can I blend together to create skintones and the like.

    • @ArtistJane
      @ArtistJane  7 років тому +1

      +S Werner If you want to learn color theory outside of art school, UA-cam and Google will be your friends. Creating skin tones can be tricky depending on what kind of portrait you're creating (whether it's from your imagination or a photo reference). If you want to stick to pure skin color tones that will help cover a variety of ethnicities, classic skin tone color like raw umber, burnt umber would be great for shadows and Sienna's are great for midtones. Lighter skin tones are usually included in most larger colored pencil sets. You have to kind of experiment to see what works for you. Sometimes a flesh tone may be too warm or cool, and you'll have to adjust it with layering something like a light cream/yellow or light blue. It takes practice, but you can get there.

    I ordered the full set of polychromos earlier today and I was wondering if I should get a set of prismacolours with it? I've found the 72 set relatively cheap where I live but I think these are the newer ones of lower quality. I haven't yet really been able to experiment with it all (and I am slowly dieing until the polychromos arrive) but am wondering if getting the extra set would be useful for more colours, blending, ect. So any advice from the artists of the internet? I know this video is kinda old now but I figured it was kind of relevant to it. Thanks!

      +MC Snow Golem I personally don't use modern Prismacolors or recommend them. The quality control has gone down hill and plus you will have plenty of colors to choose from with the Polychromos. You'll more than likely fall in love with them. If you can get your hands on vintage Prismacolors, say on eBay, I recommend those. I'll be having a giveaway soon with some vintage Prismas, so keep your eyes peeled for those. It's ultimately your choice, but I don't recommend Prismacolors anymore.

      Thy run quick but work quick to the difference in quality of the pigment is about 10% or 15% but yup they run out faster but not tht fast 70$ is a steal tbh

      as long as you don't sell art they're OK. They don't use the industry standard method to test lightfastness, but a "proprietary method". I just saw a video from a professional artist who will never use any of their products again because she can't trust them for being lightfast, even though she likes the colors and how they work. She can't in good conscience sell any piece made with them. That goes for their paints and other stuff too
