Throwing a bundle of dynamite around a corner and then seeing a cultist go flying while he screams like Goofy will never get old. One of the best feelings in video gaming.

Out of all the Build engine games, Blood was the only one that felt to me like it recaptured that special something from Doom 1 & 2 - while bringing it's own "unique" to the table too.

I really wish the modding community was larger, the game has so much untapped potential and it shows with the few mods it has, almost all of them are so well made it's incredible.
I specially love Arcade mode, sadly the modder disappeared years ago and left that beauty of a mod right there, half way done to perfection, the mod went to the point of making Tchernobog an actual threatening final boss, it's an experience that makes Ultrakill pale with how frenetic it becomes.

Haha, this is a great overlook of the Blood enemies, I really enjoyed it. I'd like to add three comments.
    1. The Voodoo Doll is actually more than useful against cultist in water. You don't have to aim accurately, the doll hits the hitscanners in the water pretty well.
    2. One of the most beautiful things in Blood is to release a full double-barrell in the face of a Cultist or Ackolyte just in the moment when the throw a bundle of dynamite at you. It explodes right in front of their face, which is jus ah, the best.
    3. Cheogh can actually be pitchforked in a Zombieman-like way, if you can catch the rhythm of his clawing. Or by circle-strafing. Also, placing the Life Leech on the ground and crouching can eliminate a literally endless amount of Cheoghs.

@jcdenton6427 except those goddamn spider-head crabs though.
I can deal with hitscanning cyborgs and relish the punishment, but having motion sickness from melee-dodging an enemy that's attack animation is restricted to jumping is just plain irritating to deal with in a high-octane, ballistic heavy fps.
they're so trash that they make me appreciate the elevator spawn of that swarm of headcrabs that hurtles at you from above during the first part of playing half life.
but that's my opinion. Otherwise great game.
Love to see the enemies die in ion fury.

@@eMoss-k7j they are a bit annoying but I git used to it after playing the game over and over and over again. Stun stick is good against them, as it can sometimes do chain lightning, but the best way to deal with them is to just crouch instead of looking up and down when they jump

    • @eMoss-k7j
      @eMoss-k7j 3 місяці тому +2

That's exactly what I do p. They're even when toggling crouching and swatting at them, it feels like such a nuisance to be at times encountered with rooms populated up to the ceiling with hordes of them.
I actually think that the corrosive millipede enemy is vastly superior, overall. Even the spider-drones that fly around and occasionally evade the magnums deadlock aim mechanics are, while still a bit of a hassle, at least serve a decent purpose in that encountering them usually results in the benefit of honing two v key combat mechanics, those being evasion and long-to-medium range accuracy(especially since these type of disembodied cyborg enemies are virtually almost always certain to be present when the gameplay makes it appropriate for them to be there: and that's whenever you happen to be in an open level area... even when they are there in some indoor arenas, I feel like you never have to deal with them being planted on you as heavily as their ground-level siblings are).
And that's probably what I hate the most about the spiders tbh. The game just dumps them haphazardly, yet with constant placements that appear to have no internally logical purpose as to why they have to be so omnipresent.
When you enter combat with any of the regular to airborne enemies, a bit more often than necessary have I experienced them being interspersed among waves of enemies that arguably are much more lethal, but what's interesting is that throughout the game, this works only really one part of the game and that's when you're introduced to them within that small corridor where they were introduced to you, and did so with a concise execution.
I'm sorry I sound so bitter about such a small and miniscule trash tier enemy. I'm as of recently playing the game on the second-hardest difficulty, and I'm basically almost devoid of any ammo, my health is down to about 48, and I'm saved right before the boss with the mech at the plaza. I've tried backtracking even to a significant distance to search for either visible secrets or pick ups I missed. My health is so low that even the pizza in the lobby before entering the boss arena does so little for improving my hp.
And here's the biggest example of my complaint: in the short few minutes running around the plaza before the boss is scripted to enter the area and fight you, there is a sudden outpouring of hitscanning enemies that, while scrounging for what supplies you frantically try to outmanuever the gunfire surrounding you during this momentary mini-horde. And for whatever reason, yes, the spiders are thrown in at you in ridiculous quantities during this short time.
Idk like, my reflexes can only handle so much sometimes. Standing still during this area to dispose of them economically makes you so easy to be shredded by ranged attacks, whereas the dizzying panoramic circulatory space for the arena practically puts you to be frenetic but in a way that reduces both accuracy and exposes you to blind spots ...
Tl;dr, none of these things are the worst in isolation, but seeing these little fuckers jump around your death screen when you're barely given enough time to cleanly eliminate at least a good portion of the first wave of enemies
Like you're forced to waste ammo on them too much in this section.
and I would not be this salty if there was a better balance for the amount of spiders this arena will dump on you.
But then again, returning to the WONDERFULLY creepy corrosive-spewing android millipedes is such an underutilized enemy for how much better they do the same role as the spiders(like the fact that the segments of the millipedes length can become separate if smaller enemy units individually about roughly the exact size and below-waistline height of the inferior spider pests; severely fewer encounters with these incredible, slinky long bois compared to this frustrating oversaturation of the former.
The only cool thing about the spiders is their death animations, and tbh even the flying head variation looks better to both electrocute by baton alt fire, or seeing to see them be burst into flames in mid air before hurting to explode without any direction is still even better to watch die than the spider bots.
I'm sure you get the gist as to why I find them so personally infuriating. And I get that really, I tend to dislike them overall moreover than how most ppl see spider bots are, and that's as quite fairly, a very simplistic type of enemy unit that can be dismissed calmly as nothing except by most who don't even hate them because they're so easy to be killed, and that tend to judge the spiders medicore if occasionally tedious adversaries.
but like, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, this being any bit of a hindrance to me enjoying a game like ion fury is really more negligible than my complaints above might appear.
I think part of what makes any shooter to be memorably engaging is to have not just great enemies in gameplay is that if you have one or two utterly hateable and borderline worthless type of filler enemies, it enhances the overall determination to become better at the gameplay because that hatred caused by weathering those weakass spiders will sometimes give you at least the motivation in destroying them to go forth and be shot with adrenaline afterwards to let that residual if still potent hatred influence how mercilessly you will go about killing the enemies with guns, making even the one-shot and ur dead hitscanners more mentally cathartic to overcome.
anyways, thanks everyone for letting me have this platform to briefly rant about such a tiny but contempt-worthy enemy unit lol.
For the record, I still think they're nowhere nearly as trash as half the enemy encounters/boss battles thrown up on you throughout the second dark souls game.
like the giant rat boss that inflicts toxic on you rapidly despite it being otherwise a comically easy enemy is beyond even hating because it's such a cheap, throwaway means for a developer to increase the difficulty of an enemy/boss that otherwise would be better to not even exist within the game.
And though I hate the spiders in ion fury, I don't think they ultimately should be removed from the game entirely despite being so trash. At least they clean up nicely when they're dead and forgotten about in the battlefield.
I can always respect something I viscerally hate than something I think is pointlessly used against the player to inflate gameplay needlessly.
thank god ion fury isn't dark souls 2, is about the gist of it lol

    Decent video though I'd like to point out some extra tips for dealing with enemies;
    - This is probably the most important tip for dealing with cultists: CIRCLE STRAFE! Every type of cultist won't fire at you unless they are looking directly at you. So if you have an encounter with a cultist take advantage of their slow turning speed. Once they start shooting at you they won't stop until you hit them with something or you run to cover where they can't see you
    - If you mash the use key before a hell hand grabs on to you it's actually a lot easier to get them off you rather than just reacting to the choke; Even on extra crispy. You can also manipulate where a hand lands so you can get one off you AND have it land right over your crosshair if positioned correctly.
    - For dealing with the phantasm the tommy gun can work just as well. You can even bait them to melee and tap the alt fire once and it's about the same as using the shotgun alt minus damage and knock back. Preferable over the shotgun? No, but still useful.
ANYWAYS please excuse my geeking out. I enjoy when someone releases a high quality blood video (which is pretty rare as you'd imagine) and this is definitely one of them :)

Good coverage. Most enemies can be downed in versatile ways, but some are some serious pieces of work. Especially the flame bois...
A few notes I'd like to add:
    - A bug in DOS Blood made it so that if you killed an axe zombie or any form of cultists and they dropped a life essence, you could gib the body and it'd drop _another_ life essence. But you can only gib corpses of those enemies if they were killed by means that cause normal death animations (no fire, no voodoo magic for zombies, and no gibbing). So for the sake of cheese, the best strat was to get close, duck, aim up and BOOM with the shotgun. The mook would die, the body would fly upwards, and gib when it landed. That's 💯% and exploit and I bet fixed by Fresh Supply, but it's worth mentioning.
    - The cleaver tossed by Bloated Butchers deals spirit armor damage (vomit is normal damage), and at least in DOS, can also be negated by ducking. The cleaver hits, but deals no damage. Not sure it was fixed in Fresh Supply.
    - If you're close to Cerberus but not in bite range, he'll stop spitting napalm balls and blow out singular little puffs of fire. Don't be fooled, those can TORCH you. They're basically the same as catching a Hell Hound's full fire breath, so they'll ignite you for a very long time, and with no water pools around in the places Cerberus appears, well...
    Lovely compendium, Eduardo, cheers!

I also like the fact when cultists are burning, they switch to English, screaming "it burns, it burns!"
In reality it was probably just the same sample used as for Caleb - to save memory- but in my head I always explained it as simply that the cultists simply forget shouting scary one liners in their cultist language when they are burning and revert back to their actual native language, English 😅

Beasts have one other big potential strategy regarding their stomp: it does "falling" damage to the player, at least in vanilla versions. Not sure if this was changed/fixed for Fresh Supply off hand. However this means that if you have Jump Boots [which negate falling damage when turned on, they don't just let you jump high], you can completely shut down their stomp. It won't protect you from their scratches though. Also, it can be situational if you have Jump Boots during various Beast encounters or not, and to utilize the boots well, you have to have a good timing of their stomp animation for the most efficient use of the boots without draining them out [since they can be toggled on and off], but still. :V

Modern games often lack stuff like what this game has : Blood is great because it dares to be a video game. It doesn't try to be realistic, it's FUN.
The ragdoll physics of explosions are chaotic and such chaos = fun. In my 40 years on this planet, I'd the say the most fun core gameplay loop of any FPS has been on Blood and it's down to all different ways of how TNT can...interact with cultists and other enemies. There are FPS games that have better levels or better graphics...but Blood is the most fun.
Alt-firing a TNT so it bounces from a wall and slides next to a cultist- and then seeing the pile of gore flying from there - it's just bloody fun.
Modern games try too hard to be realistic. I don't want realism, I want goofy ass ragdolls, explosions and cultists.

For Zombies, Butchers, Cultists and Gargoyles, if in large crowds, napalm and the spray can, individually, some flares (Bloated Butchers or Gargoyles,) or shotgun to the face (Axe Zombies and Cultists). Small enemies usually come in packs, so Spray Can or Dynamite works really well. Hellhounds and any fire based enemy usually fall ill to the Tesla Cannon. Number one thing about Blood is movement is all about mastery, as Civvie put it in his pro series (I can't do him justice here) because like most fps games, movement is important, but with Blood, it's different, there's more to understand and put to use like crouching is an essential element to enemies like Hitscanners like the Cultists, jumping over enemies allows you to escape tight situations. Dynamite is also an essential element, like grenades Call of Duty, toss them around corners, find little cracks in the wall, etc. The only mistake to be made is having the mindset that 1997 ain't got shit on modern players, never assume that, because back then, sure, Circle strafing seems primitive now, but then, it's what scored a girlfriend, but the developers didn't fuck around when they were making this game. Nice video!
Here as instructed to leave a comment saying you're wrong for choosing fresh supply and should play in... NBlood! Or NotBlood!
DON'T SUFFER THROUGH DOS IT'S HORRIBLE.
NBlood is more accurate than Fresh Supply. Demo playback compatible. NotBlood is based on NBlood, and has some really nice options (including the ability to change hitscan enemies to use fast projectiles instead, so they can actually be dodged, tweaking the rat hitboxes, fixing the gargoyle crouch bug, and restoring the pitchfork alt fire!)
I coded the share keys option for multiplayer in NBlood and a few small bugfixes.
Tip on fighting hellhounds: get close, and they will always melee attack, which is preferable to the flames.
Also, try out the alpha levels pack!

Glad to see a comment pointing this out! Fresh Supply isn't as accurate as it should be, and it's even missing bits of code from the original game. That's why it's incompatible with some mods. Some enemies are more vulnerable to fire than others, and that function seems to be broken/improperly implemented in Fresh Supply; the difference is quite noticeable when using NBlood or NotBlood. My favorite feature of NotBlood is that it fixes explosion sector detection issues along with other bugs from the original.

    • @zzeck431
      @zzeck431 3 місяці тому +1

@@TimeSplitter1701 Yes, that explosion fix is great, and so is the hit detection fix for projectile paths. The original game's algorithm could have projectiles sometimes phase through enemies. I also love the option to replace akimbo with quad damage, and the smaller hitbox for player projectiles so you don't blow your face off when trying to shoot around corners.
NotBlood is my preferred way to play, especially if I'm playing multiplayer with inexperience people.
Another issue with Fresh Supply is crushers frequently fail to kill you.
NBlood is based on reverse engineering and decompiling bits of the original exe which is why it is so accurate.

My knowledge of Blood was limited to Civvie's series. I appreciated the humour and all that, but your presentation is much more systematic and clear.
The fact that we still don't know about stuff like HP values shows how important open source codes are. I'm also very impressed with Blood's showcase of the power of the Build engine (or KEX for the remaster). Actually I'm wondering what the latter could mean for Doom since the newest official source port is also KEX based.

@@EduardoAndFriendsNightdive didn't take any major chances and I sort of like that, id24 feels like a natural extension of MBF21. On a DW thread it was quite accurately described as a "conservative update" or something of the sort. It's also good because GZ already exists for the crazy modding stuff, physics changes and all that jazz. It's a bit too early to make any sweeping judgements but so far it's alright.

Some things to note that might not have been fully mentioned: The bloated zombies MELT to fire damage. They seemed to take double damage from fire dealing weapons. Spray cans kill them in seconds along with flares. Gill beasts are fully and completely immune to whatever damage type the Tesla cannon is. Gargoyles upon taking damage will reset their melee attack. So what does that mean? Tommy gun in a 1v1 fight will invalidate them as they keep trying to attack and each bullet negates that melee attack animation. You can sit in their face not moving and they'll never get an attack in. Also this means that fire damage also breaks them as every tick of the damage over time will also reset their melee attack. Hit them with the spray can or a couple of flares and they can't do anything until the fire goes out while you casually pitch fork them in the face.

I started playing Blood on "well done" But after a few playthroughs, it was too easy, as I became accustomed to the enemies, maps and weapons. Now I play on "extra crispy" and it is both challenging and fun! You can too! Might get angry a few times but it is worth it. Kinda like being able to play Doom casually on Nightmare! As for the Hell hands, the damage in the original DOS game was directly tied to the frame rate. Higher frame rates resulted in more damage. To the point where removing the frame limiter on some ports could result in instant death the very frame they touch you. Also, the whole not being able to remove them with the use key is another hidden variable. The "remove with use" mechanic resets with the frames. So you have to tap the use key fast enough to eject them from your neck. If the frame rate is too high, the "use counter" resets to zero the next frame after tapping the use key. Again, all this is fixed in most modern source ports such as BloodGDX and NBlood. In older DOS versions, raising the resolution would decrease the FPS, which would allow the "remove with use" thing to be effective, and reduce damage per second done by the hands.
EDIT: The green spiders' darkening the screen attack was also tied to the frame rate. In modern ports, or with high FPS, the screen darkens for a second and then returns to normal. Back in old DOS versions of the game, the screen would darken for several seconds up to minutes with enough hits. This is because the screen "undarkens" with each frame. Higher frame rates return the screen to normal faster, and almost instantly if high enough.

I noticed in the game they have Shrink Shrooms, but they never shrink you which I think would have been an interesting in game element. You accidentally eat a shrink shroom when fighting zombies and a zombie crushes you. But, he forgot the worst enemies in Blood which are worse than any of them "Fall Damage" and "Door Frame". If you stand in any of the door frames and don't move you will auto die. And Fall Damage is ridiculous which is kind of weird since Caleb moves like an Olympic Sprint runner, so how does that work? LOL
20:30 This has nothing to due with the fact the Fanatics are Hitscan Enemies 0 Chance LOL. Cheogh and the Cultist Priest both have one major disadvantage if you go close enough to them where you can hit them, but no far enough away where they will use a ranged attack you can go around in circles with your pitch fork to remove them. I think it's coded into the game since their own blast radius attacks damage themselves.

Not sure if expansions are 'canon' or not but the impression I got was that the cabal kidnaps people and initially turned them into axe zombies but progressed into weirder stuff as they began creating foul abominations that mix man and beast, hence the distubingly human screams you hear upon blasting a shark man

Edit: Using the flare gun on cultists is actually not recommended imo, they don't drop ammo if they catch fire before dying. They still drop keys and special items if they have one, but I have never seen one drop ammo after running around on fire. I believe it's something to do with the way the build engine handles actors, the burning men are generic for all cultists so it doesn't know which ammo to drop.

While code was never released, there is NBlood, which is demo playback accurate for behavior. The code can be confusing though. "Sprites" are what game entities like enemies are named the build engine. Sprites of the kDudeCultistShotgun type are shotgun cultist specific code, so code handling that type, and any code applied to all sprites, defines their behavior. Probably most of it is in ai.cpp, aicult.cpp, and actor.cpp.

For a long time I was under the impression that depending on the difficulty level, there is a certain delay before you can push it off, which on _Well Done_ is long enough to leave the player near-dead. This is also what I remember from BloodGDX. And if it is not so in Fresh Supply -- well, I reserve the right to believe that this is *another* thing they screwed up while porting.
