It’s a kids film that addresses death, depression, failure and loss. So important to be able to come to terms with as a kid. I remember this and The Land Before Time helped me accept and understand my grandparents dying when I was young.

This was the saddest scene for me and still makes me crying today. I feel so bad for the rockbiter. He used to be a proud and strong being and believed he could protect his friends from the Nothing. His whole body is like a walking mountain and nothing could hurt him. But then... the Nothing took away what was really precious to him. For the first time he realized how weak he really was and that he wasn't even able to save two small creatures from death.
When I saw them sitting there and waiting for his death, I wanted to say "No, please don't do it! There is so much you can live for." But then I realized that it would be a lie. There wasn't anything left for him anymore. The Nothing already took everything away from him so he lost his will to live. Honestly this movie is one of the most depressing movies of my childhood.

1:00 I think Atreyu immediately thought about when he was holding on to Artax in the Swamps of Sadness when he was sinking, after Rock Biter said he couldn't hold on to his friends. His reaction looks like one of someone who knows exactly how that feels.

And that's how it happens. You lose things you love and for the strong ones it only makes them question strength and the meaning of it all. "I will just sit here and let it take me away too". He gave up on himself. Heartbreaking.

This scene is in competition with the Swamp of Sadness scene for SADDEST THING EVER. I have horse-loving friends who constantly weep for Artex -- but for me, this scene is the worst. The Rockbiter is usually such a cheerful fellow. And here he is, at the utter depths of despair and disappointment in oneself. God.

In the book, this scene has the rockbiter crying over how he lost his wife and child to the nothing iirc... but it's still a great scene, even with the change. Everyone who is human has felt like this.

Alice Lay i would say otherwise,tho they are 2 very emotional scenes indeed.The rock biter is still a fictional character as Artax is a real animal that we see everyday.I can't stand watching animals get hurt and especially die.Wheter it's a movie or not it's more painfull in real life but in a movie it gives you the sense of realism.Witch is very paintfull to some people. :) have a nice day.

This is funny! The German / European version I grew up with has its own soundtrack, so for me it's the same with the other soundtrack. Compared to each other this one here sounds almost too fancy for me. 🤷‍♀️ We have a sad pan flute theme used for both, Artax' death and this scene, it is way more simple yet powerful.

This is, by far, one of the many reasons why The Neverending Story continues to live on in the hearts and minds of those who see it. The Rock Biter’s acknowledgment of how physically strong he is, while still being weak in the wake of what the Nothing did to his friends. It’s a heartbreaking scene as we see an immense, gentle giant be felled after his spirit is completely crushed and despair settles in. The fact that he’s even willing to let the Nothing take him shows that he’s lost all hope in himself and the world, only desiring to not be alone and feel strong amongst his little friends once more. Truly an emotional moment, one that definitely pulls at the heartstrings.

I have never seen this movie, nor have I read the book it is based upon. And yet, watching this scene alone... is just so powerful. From the way his speech begins about his "big, strong hands", leading up to his despair over the fact that he failed to save his friends, and then ends by solemnly accepting his fate... powerful. No other word can describe it. Just... powerful.

I recently went back to this movie, I barely have any memory of when I watched it as a kid. There are definitely several scenes that made me cringe(EVERY scene with the Luck Dragon, for example), but I wish there was more Rock Biter. I loved this guy the moment he started talking. I was disappointed when I watched #2, with the movie in general as well as the new voice for Rock Biter and bringing in some irrelevant baby.
I love the image of this huge, tough creature with a memory that stretches to ancient times and the humility and wisdom of millenia. After being told the one thing in all the realm that could stop it failed to do so, it's understandable that he would give in and accept doom. It was very mature of him to see the end of the world coming and, believing nothing can stop it, accept it even though he didn't want it. That one scene was pretty much the only one that I truly appreciated.

It's a mixture of pride, loyalty and shame he probably kept telling them he could save them, that it would be okay, but in the end, he could not do anything to stop them being lost, no matter how he tried...

I believe it's a bit of a mix of both. He took great pride in his strength, but when the nothing came he realized that in the end no amount of strength was enough to save his friends, they died and his strength could do nothing to save them, making him realize that ultimately his strength is meaningless.

+inconceivabledark Me. but i feel that in the world where the Devil is like the nothing, we are the rockbiters trying to do everything to stop people who are our friends and relatives from being violent to us (they are being swept away by the nothing/Devil) and only Jesus/God represented by Atreyu can actually save them, not us. But we should not just sit there and let the nothing (or depression/anxiety plus the Devil etc) take us away, like the rockbiter was going to sit there. We have to fight and struggle to keep our story going. Not surrender to darkness. It really helps me to pray, and go to church. That is part of my fight against the nothing/darkness/anxiety/Devil. Anyway this is my interpretation as a Christian domestic violence survivor who loves fantasy stories. :) Don't worry, I am not living with any abusive people anymore. Woohoo!
