  • I Nearly Died on this Mountain: Don't be an Idiot Like Me
I had a very close call on this hill and it got me thinking about them I go gold prospecting am I being safe.
I decided to get a Personal Locator Beacon and a Camelback to take with me every time I'm out detecting for gold.
You should definitely look at getting a PLB for yourself when you are heading out bush, even if you are going out with mates. You might be the one that has to call the rescuers to save your mates life.

I reallly appreciate your honesty Bruce. Most people don't give enough thought to safety in the bush, and dehydration is a killer. Most people who die in the Australian bush are killed by a combination of dehydration and heat exhaustion. We need to stay well watered and cool, especially in the hotter weather, and always have a reliable means of raising the alarm in an emergency.

We where up at cue when the 72 year old went missing last week
He was a very lucky man
4 days out there, could’ve been a couple of hours if he had a PLB
Even a lighter a whistle etc, they will find you
Well done to the trackers and the police 👍

Thanks for yet another great video Bruce!
Takes character to admit when you make a mistake, and as you point out, it’s easy to not mange simple things like this.
I’ve spent over 10 years in the army and work in austere locations all over the world.
I’m my remote medical training I emphasise the importance of the signs and symptoms leading up to heat related illnesses.
The best thing you can ever be armed with is knowledge and knowing what to do, how to avoid situations and how to manage yourself or team when it all goes sideways.
Get out there and do a Remote First Aid Course and get the skills needed now for when you need it most. Happy to chat to anyone about this if your interested.
Cheers and thanks again for your awesome videos mate!

Back in the old analog days Telstra used to supply “country phones”. They were a standard phone brand like a Nokia or Samsung, but Telstra added an aerial booster built in. Sometimes went 10-20km further than other Telstra phones, and more on other providers.
But alas, we sacrificed all that for speed🙃
You can buy boosters today, at your own expense, but they can only increase signal... you still need at least a slither. More of zero is still zero😅

Again great advise & info 👏
One very important thing I would like everyone to do when getting an EPIRB, ..
Please make sure you go and do the registration process and not just do the basic information they ask for BUT go beyond that.
Once you are in the registration page PLEASE MAKE SURE that you list ALL the information possible ( there is by memory a section you can do that) information that is vital for them to take appropriate action.
They will usually first get the nearest police station involved to investigate…well that will not help me if I need a chopper quick smart.
So my hope by giving them all the information I can I am providing them with accurate information which they then can use to make a better judgment call on what they have to initiate as a rescue method….and hopefully skip that step with the police and send in the Air Rescue immediately 🤞.
So I recommend to think hard on what you write….in my case I include the following….
My Car registration details and Color, that I tow a trailer ( also think about what if any health issues or medicine you might need) basically provide all necessary information on that page so that the emergencies services have a better idea what to prepare for…
What I did on my registration is to also add the following…
That this device will only ever be activated under dire circumstances, such as being bitten by a snake, surround by bushfire, fallen down an old shaft and can’t get out or whatever…etc etc…
I let them know that I am usually out prospecting and am on my own.
That I have an emergency, my handheld UHF radio is always with me and I should be reachable hopefully on Channel xxx (unless I am unconscious)
    Note:
It is ideal if you can update any changes to the above information “before each trip” and advise of the the general area of where you will be in…example..in the Pilbara or whatever….the reason for this is the following…….that in the event that the EPIRB is activated in or near a city - it is likely stolen and no action from the emergency services are required..( meaning do NOT respond- falsely caused activated alarm)
I hope this all makes sense and is of help to anyone reading this.
Anyway I think you all get the idea- might seem over the top but your paying for a device that is designed to safe your life- don’t be complacent in providing only the basic information-- that be foolish
    Cheers Jim

Thanks for opening up. Thankfully Victooria mobile coverage is a bit better, but there were places when I first started prospecting that had no signal using optus and vodaphone. I moved to the telstra network through Aldi, which means it was cheap and used the extensive telstra network. I now have very little deadspots.
I also installed a free app on my phone that is promoted by emergency services for the public to use called 'Emergency Plus'. Its a simple gps app that will pin point your location (including street addresses if you are in town) so you can relay your exact location to anyone. It has tabs to call different emergency agencies. The best part about the app is that it displays the 'what3words' location method. what3words is a simple three word combination, that if you tell the emergency services operator the three words displayed on your phone, they will find you the same as giving them the latitude/longitude, which you can stuff up in a high stress situation. You can also search what3words on your computer too if you install the 'Maps with what3words' browser extension in chrome or mozilla Firefox.
Stay safe out there, no point looking for riches if ya not around to brag about it. Kind regards Daz

You raise some very good points here. I'm absolutely sure some of the viewers will benefit from them.
In WA there are plenty of dead spots with mobile phone coverage. So we have to be super safe all the time.
