So the issue started because they was trying to get put on by Mr. Magic, who was the head of the Juice Crew, but Magic dissed their tape. So KRS-One was thinking how you calling my tape wack? MC Shan is wack! And plus MC Shan had a song called the Bridge, which KRS-One took as them saying Hip Hop started in Queensbridge. And KRS, who is from the Bronx, took offense to that and dissed MC Shan. I always felt like he took his anger out of Mr Magic turning them down out on MC Shan, but it is what it is.

I’m 58, born and raised in Queens so I lived through this. Out of the 5 boroughs in NYC, Queens was looked at as soft and before Wu Tang, nobody even mentioned Staten Island in Hip Hop. Queens got dissed mainly because other boroughs saw people from Queens as being privileged and not having to struggle. Queens has two of the toughest projects in NYC, Queensbridge and South Jamaica houses (40 Projects). 50 Cent is from that area and so were the legendary drug dealing crew, The Supreme Team.
Hey bro, I was born in the late 90s in Australia, but always been a huge Hip Hop head so know alot but from someone who was there I wonder did you Like this song at the time or did the diss kinda piss you off? Also what did you think of Wu tang an American saga if you seen it? I thought it was good kinda accurate just from everything I know, one thing I didn't really understand was what are the 5 boroughs in NY like do they not consider Staten island one ? I looked it up but get confused on what they are.. bronx, queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island? Or is it NY or is that the whole city
Hi, I grew up in Hollis, Queens and knew Run DMC and LL, so by the time these records came out Queens was more known in Hip Hop. Still, we were accustomed to the Queens slander so most of us didn’t care about this diss. Many, including myself thought the song was dope although we didn’t recite the Queens diss parts, lol. NYC is made up, in part, of islands. Of the 5 boroughs, Manhattan is an island and so is Staten Island. The Bronx borders Westchester County, which is not part of NYC. Brooklyn and Queens are geographically part of Long Island. Going west to east, it’s Brooklyn and then Queens, which borders Long Island, (Nassau and Suffolk counties). Essentially it’s the 5 boroughs of NYC and everything else is NY State. I loved the Wu Tang series and they definitely put Staten Island on the map in Hip Hop. While Queens got some slander, it was never not respected as part of the city. Staten Island, on the other hand, got and still gets disrespected in general as a borough, particularly because it’s much more isolated than the other 4. To get to Staten Island, you either have to travel across a long bridge or take a ferry because the subway doesn’t connect there. Every so often politicians from there talk about seceding from NYC and becoming their own city. Hope this answers your questions.
@dsanford9402 hey, thanks alot man, sorry I didn't see the notification. That definitely helps alot thanks for going in depth. Always appreciate hearing the pov from someone who grew up in the time and beginnings of the culture
Let’s not forget Far rock Queens that’s a war zone. RIP Stack bundles and Chinx drugz. Even people from the Bronx and BK have to check in when they go to Far rock.
Im from Queensbridge originally thirty something years in the Projects. I remember when this song first dropped. Somebody got shot in my hood years ago for driving through Queensbridge blasting this song. Dude kept driving through until dudes got tired of hearing it they started letting it go. He was a family member of someone in the hood. It was unfortunate. This song was the beginning of bridge wars you had Blaq Poet responding and Butchy B with beat down KRS one song.
Mr magic listened to a demo krs had and said it was wack. Magic was the biggest hip-hop dj in NYC who was down with shan. So krs pissed at magic just went at his artists .....shante, shan and Marley. He went at then first on south Bronx. Then shan came back and hit krs with kill thst noise....then the bridge is over came out.
The initial issue started with the Juice Crew leader(Mr. MAGIC r.i.p) who was a radio personality, rejecting a demo from BDP. Prior to, Shan and Marley Marl had released "The Bridge " BDP came out with an answer record called "South Bronx " Shan responded with "Kill That Noise" Then KRS ended it with "The Bridge Is Over"
NYC is a conglomerate of boroughs that are like individual city states of their own, coming together to make one huge empire! You might have people from the Bronx that never really went to Staten Island or never felt the need to. It’s a huge place.
they're cool now- just saw a little short clip of shan saying guess who's here and then krs1 pops up behind him and they're both laughing- good to see beef that was all in the game and didn't end in murder (biggie and pac)
Deadliest piano loop ever. This song started so many fights in the club back then. If I’m not mistaken, he also used a break beat from Marley on this one. Shan still feels some type of way about KRS one to this day. You should listen to KRS one’s other diss towards Shan, aptly titled “S.H.A.N.”. You should also listen to KRS one’s diss towards Nelly, “Ova Here”. KRS was aiming for queensbridge, and hit the rest of queens by mistake.
Also, he mentioned Dougie Fresh because Dougie Fresh had a song out called Nothing, which is fire by the way. When you get a chance do some Slick Rick and Dougie Fresh reactions, if you haven't already done so. As you were.
If you think some of the riffs in the song sound familiar, it's because they reworked Billy Joel's "Still Rock And Roll To Me" (something KRS would do quite a few more times on different albums, in genius ways). Shout Ultramagnetic MCs too, Ced Gee was all over the production of this album.
Queens. LL. Cool j, run DMC, mobb deep, Nas, Big Daddy Kane are some KRS1 thought he said hip hop started in Queens but he said he Wanta tell you you are story And Roxanne shante was down with the juice crew, they are. Ced Gee of the Ultramagnetic MC's produced this song as he did for 50/60% of the whole Criminal Minded album. Ultra supposed to be a super group with BDP but after Scott La Rock got killed KRS One chose a different path for BDP and the rest is history.

Yeah. UTFO was talking about the other Roxanne, the Real Roxanne, the Latin chick. She responded, but they were cool with each other, so it didn't feel like a real beef. Shante decided to respond and added Roxanne to her name. She came out a little harder on her version and was the best MC between the two Roxannes.
The beef was originally between BDP and Mr. Magic who was a DJ at the time and refused to play Boogie Down's music on his Rap Attack radio segment on WBLS 107.5. You see how KRS didn't snap on Kane, G Rap, Ace, Biz, or Craig, etc. who were all also members of the Juice Crew. KRS was cool with some and tight with some other Juice Crew members but being that Mr. Magic was linked to the Juice Crew, KRS attacked the original Juice Crew members and left the others out of it. Besides, I don't think it would've been a wise career move to attack Kane or G Rap. Back then, nobody wanted those types of problems! At least that's the way I remember it. I could be slightly off, as I wasn't in either group.
It was more about Mister Magic and Marley Marl not liking their Demo ( Mister Magic called it Wack) so BDP went at the Juice Crew who are Marley's Artists.
Shan said "hiphop started out in the park"......so krs took as he was saying hiphop started in Queensbridge.... Because hiphop started in the Bronx.....
So you have your diss tracks out of order a little. This was a beef between rival boroughs as well as rival radio stations in NY. Mr Magic ran the Rap show on WBLS and dissed BDP when they gave Mr Magic their demo to play. The other Rival rap show was 98.7 Kiss FM which was headed by Kool DJ Red Alert who aligned himself with BDP.
