  • Today, Blade yells his opinion at you for 5 minutes, about why the Solar Ray System was a bad idea.
    And, yes, I'm aware that the Solar Ray can be fired a second time after a week, but since the war ended a few days later, that point is moot.

      That would have just prolonged the war by a few months honestly, once the colony missed Jaburo and the "Zeon is exhausted" speech was given all hope for victory or a favorable peace treaty for Zeon had gone out the window. I say this as a Zeon fangirl as well sadly.

    Gihren's Ambition: Menace of Axis does give you, as Gihren (i.e. strategist, tactician, supreme commander) the choice to R&D the Solar Ray, but the game takes some great dramatic license in order to make the events of the OYW endgame less of a lost cause when playing the Principality of Zeon.
    Per canon near the end of the first campaign (One Year War), Degwin will slip out in his ship to negotiate with the Federation. If you finished the Solar Ray, you as Gihren will have a choice, whether to DELIBERATELY target your father, or just the Feddie fleet. The logical choice is the Feds, as even in the event Degwin and Revil negotiate, it only drops your forces morale, which can be easily brought back up, thus no game over.
    Killing Degwin on the other hand, can either lead to your execution by Kycilia if you don't arrest her. On top of that, if she and Garma (if you allow certain events to change previously) are still active, they will defect, form their own factions, and declare civil war. Definitely a fun, "What if?" scenario.

      I don´t think Zeon´s war with Federation was a lost cause by itself, hell in the original Gundam they were depicted to be doing fairly well at the start and middle of the war, but thanks to the setbacks of Garma Assasination, Operation Odessa and failed attack on Jaburo realy started the downward spirral.

    A few points of reference here.
    The gelgoogs were being used by students.
    Gihren did this by design. He let the veteran troops keep the suits that were pros with. Rather than make them learn a new unit on the fly. In his sisters mind, this eas a mistake. The best pilots the best suits.
    2. After gihrens death, mamy veteran pilots left the battle field. Leaving only inexperienced pilots. Zeon poored resources into the zeong and had 4 of them ready to go. But not enoigh skilled pilots.
    3. The solar ray system was months in planning. In 0083, chima the evil woman was responsible for purging the colony of anyone who did not leave quickly. This taint of her killing space noids is why she hated zeon enough to sell out gato and his fleets in 0083.
    4. Gihren was winning the final battle. While the feddies had far more suits, zeon had one voice and a clear plan. Gihren knew his battle field and kept his suits in reserve. Amuro saw the future of his death which cause chaos and cpnfusion for the zeon forces. Add in gihren's sister being so disliked and that only caused more trouble. She also trashed his planning and choices in front of the upper leaders. Remeber why it was thay gato's cpmmander left.
    The solar ray system did its job. The issue was it was a one shot. And as you said, he cared little for friendly fire. While the big zam was shelfed for the zeong. Which did prove ot could kill the gundam.

    Another problem what the solar ray does, it would definitely affect Zeons economy if they win as generic as it sounds. People would have to build new homes and new jobs would have to be created to recover and whatever space colony the civilians had to go to would make it more crowded. In a sense its a weapon that isnt sustainable where people are forced to leave. Your big zam idea makes more sense than the giant laser.

      I agree. The mass produce of the big zams would have work in Zeon's favor, but Ghiren spent too much money on experimental weapons and creating new mobile suits instead of mass produce for the Zeon troops. Which is one of the reasons why they lost the war at the end.

    I seem to recall from Mark Simmons' gundam unofficial website, that the Federation lost 20% of their fleet at Solomon. With the solar ray destroying another 50% of the fleet, the feds had just lost 2/3s of their before A Baoa Qu. While I imagine they lost another 20% after the battle, what can be inferred here is that, I think the Solar Ray was a good move. This is especially after Kycelia was confident that the Zeon forces at Granada and Side 3 could hold out against the Federal fleet, or what was left of it. It's probably no wonder why the feds never fully recovered.

It's not an exaggeration to say that they get nearly wiped out four times in a span of 15 years. (OYW, Delaz conflict, Gryps conflict, Neo-Zeon War). And then slowly fall apart over the next half-century and eventually leave the solar system as a lawless, technologically declining, anarchic hellhole of warring city states and scavengers (per Crossbone Vanguard's later chapters). This thing was resistant to your standard ballistics (As much as MS scale 'Machine Guns' could be considered 'Standard Ballistics') and with the first I-Field ever (And a very powerful one at that!), it meant the only ranged damage that was going to do more than tickle it was explosives, one problem: All Missiles lose out on the guidance systems thanks to Minovsky Particle Interference, which I'd imagine only got worse with it's scattered and regular Mega Particle Cannons constantly spewing a very deadly fusillade that would melt entire FLEETS. So even if you got the missiles off and somehow they didn't get shot down in the same blasts that melt your ship into exploding slag? There's a good chance someone fucked up anyways and would miss by some degree (Because you'd have to fire it like one would a TORPEDO)

So, the Big Zam would have to somehow dodge a salvo of remote-controlled missiles. Plus, if you recall earlier in the battle of Solomon when the Federation launched a salvo of beam distruption missiles from their public-class shuttles? They could do the same for remote controlled missiles or non-guided rockets. As such, I still think the Big Zam would have been just a big target.

    Being spaced Nazis they actually capture one of the key reasons why Germany could not possibly win world War Two and that the end of the day they're running out of men unless they build unmanned mobile suits zeon is running out of trained and experienced pilots to actually fly them and the sheer attrition factor is grinding them down even more. Even if we ignore the plot armor for the good guys at the same time mass-producing mobile series doesn't solve the problem that you don't have anyone to pile of them except for raw recruits or trainees who probably haven't even seen combat yet, assume the big boys will have positive kill death ratio is in assuming that you even build them to quality so they're not breaking down you still have the issue of they're not going to mitigate the numbers fully.

The resources used to construct the solar ray system could have been used to advance mobile suit tech, or even better their numbers, since it was clear that battles were becoming more focused on mobile suits than fleets. That is because Russia is a large country, full of mud and swamp during the spring, and it has a much denser population in its territories. Plus, the Russians destroyed or disassembled all of their factories and relocated them to the Ural mountains which ultimately lead to the defeat of the Axis powers.
      In gundam on the other hand, their situation was a little more along the lines of the Korean war's battle of Pusan, if you note how Jaburo is positioned further South, with the Zeon Earth Attack Force occupying much of the northern hemispher of the planet, while holding a few parts of the continents of Africa and Australia. And they actually were using the Federation's own resources against them, including their shipyards, factories, and mining. I agree that the Solar Ray wunderwaffe was a waste but I will say that Gihren using the Solar Ray succeeded in fucking up the Federation in the long term, resulting in its slow decline. Why? Because in using it he killed General Revil.
    Johann Abraham Revil would have been the perfect person to lead the Federation into the future. As a budding Newtype himself, he would understand and would likely protect all the young Newtypes appearing. As a non-Earthnoid supremacist, he would have championed conciliation between Earthnoids and Spacenoids and would have likely been able to prevent the rise of the Titans. As the leader of the Federation military he knew the system and would be able to work within it and around it at the same time to achieve his goals and he knew of the Federation's many weaknesses and wanted to remedy them. And as someone who would have been one of the great heroes of the One Year War, he would have the loyalty of many of the Federation's rank and file and even of the civilian population. It is also shown that he is intelligent and adaptable, pushing for the V Project when many of the senior Federation leaders were not sold on the power of Mobile Suits even after Zeon trounced them at all the battles up to the Battle of Loum.
    Of course, I can only say this with hindsight through all of the side materials available like the Gihren no Yabou games (shameless plug time: ua-cam.com/video/0zeAF3njaMY/v-deo.html )

    For fuck's sake. I'm a die hard gundam fan but there is no way they built this thing in a week. I can swallow a new mobile suit design being rolled out every six weeks, since I can accept that they were already being worked on. But that's just ridiculous, unless Gihren had some kind of grey goo nanotechnology on hand.

  • @coreygunter6761
    @coreygunter6761 Місяць тому

    The solar ray wasn't actually a huge factor in the loss. The biggest factors were infighting amongst the ranking officers and the zabi family, a lack of standardized parts and controls among the various zeon mobile suits until way too late and most importantly, the federation processing greater resources and manpower. Also, big zam wasn't exactly a good weapon considering it's operating time was only like 20 minutes. Another point, the rays only real issue was being used without proper testing to essentially assassinate Degwin. Girhen already more or less controlled zeon and could have denounced his father as a traitor. There was a fair chance Zeon would have kept fighting and disregarded the surrender, plus they might have had a fleet killing solar weapon that could be used more than once, though I still doubt they would have won down the road.

  • @DIEGhostfish

    I feel like it was steadily under construction throughout the war but the final stages requiring the colony to be evacuated only needed 4 days, still very impressive. I don't think the Ray was some sudden inspiration by the Solar Flare System.

    • @CosmoShidan
      @CosmoShidan Рік тому +3

      The Solar Flare is really simple: it uses a million solar mirrors of concentrated sunlight. Likewise, The Zeon uses concentrated sunlight, but with a cannon piece from a hollowed out colony. I would say the Zabis did, because they operate on the same principle. Plus, this weapon is the closest to the atomic bomb or the Tucker microphone.

  • @keithfife2355
    @keithfife2355 4 місяці тому +1

    You can tell this video isnt researched...
    In the novel the solar ray aka the system project was under construction for some time, and fire multiple shots. In either case, the use of the solar ray is similar in effect to using nuclear weapons due to the raw destructive power which is completely understandable given the Zeon miltary's lack of skilled pilots. Tomino makes analogy to Japan following the Battle of the Philipine Sea aka the Marianas Tukey shoot where the Japanese Navy effectively lost all of its skilled pilots. The Zeon military has recruits piloting Gelgoogs and Rick Doms which are comparavle or superior to the base RX-78-2. By using the system project Girhen does more damage to the EFSF military than his mobile suit forces could ever hope to do. If the Zeon were able to fire another shot, the battle (as in the novel) would have turned out far differently.

Big enough to be a segment of the A Baoa Qu level of Encounters in Space, and Gundam: The Ride, before it got closed down.

    • @CosmoShidan
      @CosmoShidan 2 роки тому +3

      My take on the Dolos is that it was a very bad idea. Sure, it can lauch 7 mobile suits at once, but it takes 20 minutes for the catapults to cool down, and if all 7 overheated, that would render the MS still aboard vulnerable. And it's such a big target that it was easily destroyed. Also, I-fields are useless when you take into account that they can't deflect projectiles such as missiles and machine-gun fire, and they cost too much power; space stations and ships need power to supply oxygen. And Point Defense Canons are even more useless when they get sprayed by beam distruption bombs.

    @FirstLast-cg2nk Рік тому

    Okay, but this really is something we tend to see with real world dictators when things get desperate: An obsession with "Wonder Weapons", basically weapons that are well above what are currently available, and probably even possible. As an example, look up "Wunderwaffe" on wikipedia for a list of the ones from WW2. When people like Gihren get desperate, they start looking for a hail-mary to save them.
    The reality is that, barring the creation of the atom bomb during WW2, there has never been a case where an experimental weapon dreamed up during an active war was able to be designed, manufactured, and then see wide-spread implementation in time for it to have an actual impact on the war itself. Wars are often won or lost by what equipment and resources are available at the start of the war, not any new developments made in the middle of it.

    Solar ray was a far better investment. I weapon capable of destroying a third of the Federation fleet while the big zam was only able to destroy a handful of ships before it was destroyed by a single mobile suit. This is like comparing the V2 rocket to the nuclear bombs in ww2. Both were super weapons but one clearly had the ability to tip the balance. I guarantee you the federation was more concerned with a weapons system capable of destroying hundreds of ships instantly from ranges beyond their ability to respond than a system that could be neutralized by a single Gundam. If the solar system was made earlier and had multi-fire capabilities then I'm sure it would have tipped the balance of power. I could be wrong though. What other alternative could cause as much damage, provide as much protection via firing range, and keep your losses to a minimum? The zeon could never compete via numbers so investing in ships or mobile suites was not a great alternative. When you're facing a larger opponent you must have a SIGNIFICANT edge via weapons systems and the solar ray was the only weapons system capable of this. The final battle from Gundam Seed gives an idea of the potential of the solar ray when compared to the Genesis system.

I say this a Zeon fangirl too, I know full well the strengths and weaknesses of the faction and a quick decisive war was the only hope. With a quick win giving them total freedom from the feddies and the time they would get while the feddies rebuilt while also attempting to recover from the colony drop Zeon could have thrown all the resources they had into MS and fleet numbers while keeping a tech edge enough to force a cold war. They could then use economic/political means to get more colonies to their side or at least become neutral giving less ports to the feddies which is just as bad as losing territory. But nope... had to go all bonkers and make the war last far too damn long ruining any hope of freedom for any colony not just Zeon. -_-
