FYI on this crack it will probably reoccur within a few years. Nothing will fix it permanently. The weight of the house is just too heavy. BUT......it just hairlines and does not look nearly as bad as when you use tape. When I use tape on something like this it usually buckles and looks worse. The hot mud is great for repairs and lasts much longer than joint compound.
That's a good idea to cut that wide notch. The quickset too adds strength. I don't see how adding tape would do anything but add strength. Another thing that can be done is to move the seam away from that stress point by cutting in a new piece of drywall
