Among the many things one could say about Waits, and about his guitars, is that often the electric ones come in too loud or too saturated. It's a clever, unsettling little attention grab. Cold Water and the solo on Falling Down are examples. But actually, I really like Tom's own playing. His fragmented acoustic is beautiful, and that damped rhythm thing he does on Cold Cold Ground or Hold On is gripping but also moving. For someone who's not seen as a guitarist, those are two real signature sounds. Great video, thanks!
Yes! Totally agree about Tom's playing - which I'll talk some more about in chapter 2. He has such an amazing feel when he plays. His rhythm parts look like nothing on the page. But when you hear him play it... Wow!
I’m a drummer but Ribot is one of my favorite musicians. Love him with Waits but also with the Lounge Lizards, Electric Masada (or any John Zorn collab), and his own Cubanos Postizos. I believe he’s also left handed but plays right handed guitar. Great video!
Thanks, these guys represent my favorite guitar styles and tones. I was lucky to have played with Marc Ribot back in the day and consider him a lifelong friend.
I've just discovered your channel. right now. I'm a big fan of Waits but even more of Marc Ribot. He is one of the most avant garde guitar players out there. Truly a giant and a musical genius. I love your playing Danny, as a guitar player myself I find you have a beautiful touch and funny enough you have a The Paul, one of the most stranger Lesters ever made, probably from 1974 or so and also you play P90's which I have on my SG and I really adore for their amazing tone. Grazi Gioele! But I didn't forget him, I just haven't got to that album yet haha! Thanks for watching.
@@dannyeddyguitar it's prpbably because Im a huge fan of Waits, but it's one of his best I think! Get it soon
The name of Tom Waits is like a secret handshake among musicians. The secret word which let's you in to a world where you will find yourself on a path to more obscure and cultlike musicians like Don van Vliet or Big Mama Thornton and Lucille Bogan or John Lurie.
So very true! Although, I have to admit, you've introduced two new names that I was unaware of, in Lucille Bogan and John Lurie...
@@dannyeddyguitar well Lurie's album The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits on which Marc Ribot was one of the guitarists may interest you, then.
Marc ribot is a genius, absolutely love his work with Tom and solo work and goes without saying tom is in my top 5 artists of all time, love that you've done a little dive into this topic
Thanks Haden. Yes, he's just so incredibly innovative!
@@dannyeddyguitar 100% jaw droppingly innovative and inspiring, loved how you pointed out his attack with picking so janky, one of the perfect marriages in collabs, cant wait for insight on real gone;)

I can not believe that you skipped over talking about "I hope that I don't fall in love with you"
The duel guitar work on that song is a masterpiece... Especially the runs from the second guitar.
It was the whole reason I clicked....
