Cuban, gypsy jazz, surf - that’s ticking a lot of boxes! (next? spy film noir which seems right around the corner). At a gig today I copped some ideas from your lesson on I’ll See You In My Dreams and it fit in nicely, thanks for the inspiration Alex!
Cultured guitar playing. I love it. My Saturday just went from canning tomatoes to a free afternoon to canning tomatoes and then guitar practice. Thanks. 🎶👍
My wife gardens and I put up her produce. Tasty Kansas garden tomato makes the winter a lot easier, plus I make salsa and can that too. We are retired and good food is a fun part of our day. "Cultured guitar playing" is another endless interest for me. @@AlexFarranGuitar
I just discovered your channel and I’ve been diving into these, particularly the Marc Ribot ones. These videos have seriously expanded my vocabulary already. And your solos are really beautiful. Very inspiring, great stuff!
My favourite channel. Another great lesson, Alex. The in depth breakdown of every phrase makes it so much easier to apply this material to your playing. Thanks!
The live version of '16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought-Six', on 'Big Time', sound so damn good with Marc playing guitar on it! Adding some really demented angular hairy riffs towards the end.
A favourite of mine too man, absolutely love that. I remember tracking down a VHS copy of “Big Time” back in the late 90’s.. that show frazzled my teenage brain in a very good way! 🔥
@@AlexFarranGuitar YES!! Love that performance. Thank you for these amazing lessons there's so much fun and they're really reinvigorating my desire to play, and my appreciation of the guitar 🙏🔥
Big Time & Bone Machine completely blew my youngster brain too, but I had no idea for decades why and how you could get to something so spiky, capricious, sexy but plain musical like that. (Taking a while to learn guitar being a dummer might be a factor too, heh..) Thanks a lot for channels like Alex' I might finally start to get it. Check also Joe Gore's (guitar on Bone Machine ao) channel for more rich "wide legacy" playing.

😃 thank you so much buddy! Really happy you’re enjoying the videos! And thanks for taking the time to comment! 🙏🏻 Haha yes.. it is quite the formidable combination! I’ll have to come up with some other combinations. Maybe an acoustic one.. Tony Rice, Elliott Smith and Bert Jansch?! 🤪
Alex, for god's sake man, stop quoting all these other guitarists, I can't keep up!! Stumbled on yourself yesterday and what great video learning tools yours are. I would describe myself as an intermediate level player and have not much knowledge of theory and scales but your videos help greatly. Thanks from Australia.
Cheers mate! Glad you enjoy the lessons! Chip away at the theory stuff gradually as and when you need it. I like to think of it simply as a way to describe a sound in less abstract terms. 👍🏻🍻
I don't venture onto the Tube as much as I should but couldn't let this one pass me by on my Friday lunch break. Top stuff as always mate, totally nailed Ribot's Waits vibes
@@AlexFarranGuitaranymore Frisell style stuff too would be really appreciated, especially his country stuff. Love your stuff man, keep up the good work, your channel is going to grow!
Thanks James! Good shout on the Frisell country stuff. Maybe I’ll do a breakdown of his version of “Moon River” or something of the “Willies” album 🤷🏻♂️🍻
Man, just worked my way through the Ribot/Gypsy Blues lesson (fantastic!) and now have this whole additional, beautifully nasty world to explore. Buckling up. BTW, Joe Gore (on his Tonefiend channel) just posted a great dual piece of Joe's played with Jim Campilongo, so much overlap here. Oh boy..not sure how this one slipped by me! Utterly fantastic lesson, Alex!!! You ALWAYS speak my language, but a Ribot lesson is akin to speaking my dialect, accent & slang as well! 🤣 I'm totally stealing that Db7 "X" shape tri-tone sub thing & also that absolutely wicked 9th with the b3rd on top double stop thing... that is SO NASTY, man!!! It really doesn't get any more Ribot than that!! I really appreciate how you talk about (for lack of a better term) what kind of "attitude" the right hand should be playing with. So many teachers neglect to mention that aspect of playing. Or maybe it just gets forgotten in the deluge of theory & technique, etc.. But it's SOOOO important to mention where it's not only OK to hit wrong notes, but actually encouraged!!! Ribot himself always plays his best when he sounds as if he couldn't give seven fucks about hitting a wrong note 🤣🤣Thanks so much for this amazing solo & lesson, Alex! I stand by my previous assertion that you're as good, if not a better player than Ribot himself, and you should be Tom Waits' next guitar player 🤷♂😱🙏🙌
Haha man, I couldn’t possibly ask for a better compliment than that!.. I would of course give anything to play alongside Mr Waits 🫡 Really glad you enjoyed the video mate, and glad I could provide something worthy of being stolen! 😂 That Db7 tritone sub idea is a winner for sure.. Thank you so much, I really appreciate that 🙏🏻 Sure thing, I’ll start doing album recommendations within the videos. I’ll be posting an “album of the week” over on my Patreon too starting soon. 🍻
This is such a high quality lesson, cool playing and a fantastic explanation of how to think through the changes. I'd love to know if was this solo initially improvised or composed for the lesson? I need to get this good!
Thanks so much for the kind words! 🙏🏻 Yes, the way I do these lessons is to make a backing track, and then film a bunch of improvisations over it before selecting my favourite chunk. 👍🏻
@AlexFarranGuitar Hey, thanks for the reply! So when you jam it out, what's the ratio of designed licks to subconscious free flow? I always find the more I give over to playing with feel, the harder I find it to track the changes. Tracking the changes while trying to nail the melody in my head is the hardest bit of improv, the more theory I understand, the more safe places I can find to land, but there is rarely time to think about it in the moment. What's the trick to tracking changes while thinking about melody?!... I guess play more!
Very nice! I love those amps! Mine is a 69’ drip edge Deluxe Reverb.. my favourite amp for sure. I also have a black panel 64’ Princeton Reverb that I adore. My favourite modern amp is my Lazy J20 which is based off the tweed 5e3 circuit.. amazing sounding amp 🙏🏻 Would love to add a pro or super reverb to the stable sometime 👌🏻
@@AlexFarranGuitar Deluxe might be the best recording amp ever. Only topped by the Princeton, if anything at all. Your taste in amps is excellent, sir 😎
Thanks mate, same to you!.. a man of taste for sure! I agree, the deluxe is what I take to 90% of my session work, it never fails and it takes pedals extremely well too 👌🏻
@@AlexFarranGuitar as much as I hate to admit it, I have a Tonemaster Deluxe Reverb (blonde model that is modeled after a Deluxe with the bright cap clipped…better reverb too), and that gets the nod for most club gigs these days. It’s just so damn light and convenient…and it’s pretty damn close tone wise to a vintage DR, too. Is it as good? Nope. It’s about 90% there though, and for a bunch of drunks in a bar, 90% is close enough. Direct out to FOH with an attenuator to keep stage volume down for the club owners and sound guys that can’t mix anything loud 🙄😂 Still got the real deal at the house for dates that need 100%, but the blonde Tonemaster DR will surprise you. Worth a test drive for anyone reading this.
Oh man, I’ve been so close to picking one of those up a few times now. The lightness of it is super appealing. You really reckon it’s 90% of the way there?.. how do you find it takes pedals? I’ve heard conflicting stories on it’s ability to handle drive pedals 🤷🏻♂️
