Madam, you are partly misinforming your audience on this. Airlines don't make immigration rules or laws but follow the immigration laws existence in the countries they fly into. Airlines do not have any discretion to accept or reject any immigration rule. Acceptablity of expired Nigerian passport to board plane enroute to Nigeria is the law, and not subject to the discretion of any Airline. Passengers should ensure that they print a copy of the immigration announcement just in case. I, relatives and friends have already flown on virtually all all major airlines into Nigeria, based on expired Nigerian passports.
Hi SassyFunke thanks for the information, I currently don’t have a British passport. Can i go with the ETC and travel back with my expired passport and the proof that i have applied and done my biometric for my passport renewal

@@obasantolulope2367 I guarantee you 100% that you will be stuck in Nigeria.
1. ETC works the same as expired Nigerian passport, so it is waste of money and time to get ETC to return to Nigeria, if you still have an expired Nigerian passport.
2. Your expired Nigerian passport cannot get you out of Nigeria, without another valid passport.
3. If you are currently on a UK resident permit, you cannot leave Nigeria without a valid Nigerian passport.
4. If you are already a UK citizen, but with an expired passport, you still cannot go out without a valid UK passport.
5. If you have a valid UK passport, and an expired Nigerian passport, you will be able to go out, but they will try to shake you down at the airport, unless you are able to show them evidence that you have applied for Nigerian passport before leaving UK.
This video gave me confidence to travel to Nigeria for my niece's wedding. My nigerian passport expired in 2020. I used Turkish Airlines and travelled hassle free. This was March 2024. Thank you Funke!

Just to note from my experience. The airline i used, Lufthansa said that i needed to check with 'Local' officials before travelling. Local officials in this case means Nigerian immigration officials. They have said that as for EU airlines, it is NOT a restriction imposed by the airline but by the country. Therefore if Nigeria allows you, then it should be ok.

I had my renewal biometrics done at the High Commission in London back in May. It is October now - STILL NO PASSPORT! Nobody answers the phone and if you go there and cry, nobody will attend to you. Why is everything so hard for us?!!!
I applied in march, I am yet to receive it by December.
Has anyone travelled on BA with an expired passport.
I traveled on the 20th of September and there was no issue using BA, just make sure you renew before you travel back which is what I did. Hope this is helpful for someone.

I just flew in with an expired passport a week ago using Delta. No issues at all. Immigration only asked me if I was aware that my passport expired 2 years ago. I replied yes and that I intended to renew while in nigeria. Btw there were signs in the arrival hall stating “expired Nigerian passports are welcome”

Yes it is. I am travelling to Nigeria next month (November 2023) with expired Nigerian passport. The Canadian High Commission Ottawa, Canada confirmed Nigerians are still allowed to travel to Nigeria on expired Nigerian passport, however they advised calling the airline to ascertain the airline allows travel to Nigeria with expired passport. I called Lufthansa, the airline I'm booked on and they confirmed there'd be no issues. I don't intend to renew my Nigeria passport while in Nigeria since I will travel back on my Canadian passport and I have already started the renewal process in Canada.

A lady with an expired passport flew to abuja on the same flight with me with an expired passport from London using BA. No issues at all on 29th November 2023. She had a valid British passport.

I understand now why travel with expired is now possible for those trying to get new ones. The agents outside Ikoyi Immigration office touting services were even congratulating me when I went in to pick my precious green. I got my new 10 year passport last month, so thankfully I don't have to worry for the next few years. Phew! 😅

@SassyFunke please can you give your advice. I booked separate flight tickets with 2 airlines to go to the Uk. The first ticket is From Kano to Cairo (Egyptair) the second ticket is from Cairo to London (Royal air Macro). I'm traveling with just cabbin bag and no luggage to reclaim in Cairo.I contacted Egyptair to ask if I will need a Visa since I have 2 separate tickets and they said if I don't have any baggage to reclaim in Cairo I can just go through transit and Visa won't be needed. But I don't know if from Nigeria I would be allowed to board because the first ticket only shows Kano to Cairo. But if I show them both tickets and the online boarding pass of both tickets would I be allowed to board from Nigeria.

Please sassy Funke, I want to ask, is it possible for me to enter Nigeria through MMA and when I wanted to leave, the immigration personnel was asking me how I entered the country knowing fully well that there is a stamp on the passport. Please I don’t know if anything happened that made me have such issue because I am still confused.
I think for the first time, *you have misinformed*. Coming to Nigeria on an expiry passport is not at the discretion of the airline, but the law. Airlines don't make immigration laws, but follow immigration laws of countries they fly into to avoid fines. ETC is a waste of money and time. Expired Nigerian passport effectively replaces the ETC. ETC is only necessary when one does not have an expired passport. To ensure no hassles with any airline, one should print an official copy of immigration declaration on the acceptability of expired passport entry.

Thanks for the vital information. What about if the passport is like a month or that very month to expire. Because I was told, it must not be less than six months to expire before one can travel. But I have my American passport

Funke, other than Turkish Airlines, which are the airlines that accept expired Nigerian passports?
I know in the past many of the airlines that fly direct to NIGERIA accept it but as I mentioned in the video, it’s best to call the airline to confirm when you’re ready to travel

Good day perfect timing I want to travel to Nigeria in the next few days and my Nigerian passport expired July 2022. But my British passport is valid. Can I travel?. one word of advice I checked KLM and they are not doing this. You need to have up to 6mths on Nigerian passport or visa. Does not matter that you are dual citizen.

Hi, just to let you know! I traveled to Nigeria with family in July with KLM and we all had expired passports (Nigeria) and valid Britsh passports. They (both the airline and immigration) gave us absolutely no trouble.
Because it's a relatively rare occurrence, some airline customer services may not be current. They'll just quote you the old standard policy they've had for years, than to say they don't know or not sure.
