I haven't played actively for a while and slide repairs are expensive for something I don't actually play much anymore so my tuning slide's been stuck for about 15 years and I had resigned myself to this being how it's going to be forever
    FINALLY GOT IT UNSTUCK!!
    THANK YOU!

Just a tip for newbies, you can also use combo oil to lossen up the tuning slide a bit. After you get it out, be sure to give your trumpet s bath and clean out the lead pipe very well with a snake brush. When you put it back together use some slide grease and it should move perfectly.

Helped my husband and I get his slide out tonight, thank goodness. We used a lighter, oils, a massage gun, a sock lol, i held it and he pulled. finally it just popped out. We were worried there for a sec, has rehearsal in the morning

Wow, first slide repair I’ve ever done, I had a torch and penetrating lubricant at home! Was on my Stradivarius and I was careful not to overheat or hit too hard to damage it.

Thank you for all your very very good presented trumpet repair videos, especially this one for example. They are all 100% clear and masterful. In following your instructions with the 3 drumsticks, I was able to remove the tuning slide on a double braced king 2007 that had been totally in pushed in position. I of course worked with a penetrating oil too, but the drumstick trick did it immediately (it came out with "that knocking sound").

I'd have used more penetrating oil, and I'd have sprayed it into the leadpipe as well so that both ends of the tubing got soaked. I'd also have given it more time to penetrate, plus, as I was working the slide and when it started to move, I'd keep adding penetrating oil to make things as slippery as possible.

Really interesting video. I have a Yamaha 1335 with a stuck main tuning slide that is pushed all the way in, it’s been stuck a while, probably calcium build up - would you go straight for desoldering given that you can’t get at the inner slide. There are no braces to lever against either…

If that does not work, then I would unsolder the crook.

I would sneak some water with crushed ice cubes into the tuning slide through the valve casing, and then heat the tuning slide from the outside. Thermal expansion will make the outer part of the tuning slide become larger than the inner part, solving the problem.

Could this work on the third valve slide on a marching Euphonium/Baritone?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop
      @TheBrassandWoodwindShop  4 роки тому +1

Yes, This technique should work on that instrument, but you will want to be more careful than you would with a trumpet or cornet because a marching baritone will be damaged easier.

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop

Yes, vinegar will work too, but I do not have much experience with vinegar, so I cannot say much about how long to soak it.

What techniques do you have for freeing up a yamaha trumpet one piece main tuning slide that doesn't have the tubes to unsolder?

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop

I hope to do a video on this some time.
Take a tuning slide priers and tap one of the ferrules so that it moves about 1/4 inch. Cut the slide under where the ferrule was. Twist the slide out if you can. Slide the ferrule back into place and solder everything back together.
      I hope this helps.

Just curious, what brand of penetrating oil do you recommend? Hoping to do as much as I (safely) can before bringing it in to an instrument repair shop. Based on research, I’ve seen that liquid wrench is a good bang-for-your-buck product

    • @TheBrassandWoodwindShop

I do not know which brand is the best for musical instruments or if they are all about the same. Maybe I should do a study on that and see if one is better than another.

What I’ve found that works pretty well is acetone and transmission fluid. It penetrates excellent, has no Aerosol fumes, and can be mixed quickly to any Viscosity... I just use a brush or Qtip most of the time..

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. If the brace is on the tuning slide, treat it like the one with no brace. Put penetrating oil on it and then try the twisting technique. If that does not work, try the tuning slide pliers, and if that does not work, you will probably need to un-solder it.

Trumpets aren't built worth a darn if you have to beat the heck out of them and ruin them in order to just do a little periodic maintenance. So frustrating.
