How to convert a 30rnd PMAG into a 10rnd PMAG (Check your state and local laws)

- Using a 20 round block, a 3/16 drill bit, and 3/16 rivets, it is easy to convert a 30 round Magpul PMAG into a California Legal 10/30 round Magazine for the AR platform. (Please note the date of the video. Check your state and local laws regarding conversions)

Cool. Just 5 minutes ago I was at magblock and they now have PMAGS with the block included on there site. I got 20 broken down as "parts kits" so I can rivet them instead of the epoxy they use. Never know when WROL or SHTF will come calling and a quick drill will restore it to its former glory. I cant wait to get working on them. The only issue was the price. 19.95 per mag with the mag block. Not to bad once you add the block and mag together. I took the ease of one stop shopping over price.
The way it worked for me, in California at least, was I purchased a 30rnd PMag rebuild kit. I bought mine in a store in Sacramento called "Sacramento Black Rifle." Because it is a rebuild kit, it comes disassembled for use as replacement parts for an existing 30rnd mag. Since Pmags werent around before the ban, it would be unwise to claim it is grandfathered. Purchase a rebuild kit and never assemble it as a stock 30rnd.
This solution is better than epoxy if you are worried about dirt getting in the mag. This method allows you to open the mag and fix it as needed. Much like stripping your gun for cleaning, this requires tools and time. No comment on the barrel mod.
I would keep all the tools that you bought instead of returning them to the hardware store. As you mentioned in your video, if something happens to your mag and it needs to be fixed, you’ll have to drill-out that rivet. Now you are again in the same situation where you will need to use those tools to make your mag state compliant.
Nice video, thanks for posting it. I like the rivet. Might be good to have if a RO at your shooting club questioned your overly long mags. I'll bet you can see the MagBlock if you have 30 rd mags with the windows on the sides.. Easy inspection. :)
Pop rivets are nice for quick repairs or installing mud flaps etc. I use them with washers on soft plastics. Nice tool to have when you don't want to mess around with locktite on nuts & bolts..

U can buy black rivets on Amazon. As he said, Magpul sends them out with a rivet on the edge of the magazine. Theres is actually a raised mark on the magazine’s casting where their rivet goes if you are trying to convert your own the same way Magpul does. Only issue doing it this way in the video is you cant open the magazine bottom when finished, and I’m not sure if you can do this using ranger plates.
The advantage to doing it this way is if you ever want to covert them back and the hole bothers you, you can swap out the baseplate.
Usually rivets have two sizes - the diameter and the length. I’m just curious what length he used. Should be on the box.

I understand that California recently ruled against hi-cap mag possession. Will the rivet alone meet the DOJ requirement and definition of a permanently fixed magazine limited to 10 rounds. I think the DOJ testified that a rivet and epoxy were required. Anyone.....?
That is a good question. Considering the age of the video, as always, I advise doing your own research of the requirements if you live in the ever devolving dumpster fire of California. I cannot and do not provide legal advice. Simply commentary as to what was acceptable at the time of filming, to the best of my knowledge.
@BingoFuelUSN LOL, good point. I actually did end up keeping it. My line of work doesnt require tools like that at all, so I have no need for a rivet gun.

Jesse L I’ve never moved into California with non compliant guns... also I don’t offer legal advice but I suggest looking into the matter and the governing laws to be sure. California isn’t the friendliest to the 2A.
You will have to make your AR featureless..no flash hider (muzzle break ok), no fore grip, no collapsible stock, no pistol grip...OR if you put a mag lock on it then you can keep the features...HOWEVER...the first AW law in '89 (model definition) is still in effect so check your model and make sure that your rifle is not specifically banned...if so get a new receiver and swap out the parts... I followed your directions EXACTLY and found that the short rivets are a little too short. It barley pokes through the second layer of plastic when you pate them, so when the rivet is expanded, it actually starts to do that inside the magazine block base. No bueno. Perhaps the medium length rivet will do.

Since Pmags are made out of plastic, you could just saw off the 'sealed' bottom section, pull out the MagLock spacer, and glue a piece of plastic (or wood) on the bottom, creating a 19 or 29 rnd mag. Own a hacksaw? ;)
The only way to make a plastic mag "irreversible", is to install a self-destruct device, that would dissolve the mag, when tampered with. Maybe sulfuric acid in a fragile glass tube?
Humm, it might be illegal to carry sulfuric acid around.. Could be used as a weapon..
I know the 20Rnd block I got was for Magpul. I am not sure if it would work on another brand. Let me know.
It will not because the base plate is setup differently, yo would need to sand down the tab used to lock the magpul base plate in place

Verg Helpful. I was stressing on whether to sell my magazines and profit from the mania or look for a solution to reduce capacity. I am still pretty knew to all of this and did not realize this option was available. @@@Is there a 20 to 10 reducer that you are aware of.
Permanent means requires the use of tools to restore to default condition. When I say the magazine can be drilled out, that is not advice to do under any circumstance. I am talking in times Without Rule of Law (WORL) situations.

You mentioned at the end, if you drill out the rivet (in a 2A friendly state) everything would be reusable, but you would need a new spring. Is this really the case? If (in a free state) you drilled out the rivet and removed the block, would it be ready for use without purchasing any spare parts?
@@DCoutdoors18 I made no changes, that I can recall this many years later, to any of the magazines’ springs. I still have and use the magazines shown in this video.
Punch out the rivet, and cut the block all the way down or buy a new spring plate.

And how you gonna remove dust, sand or any dirt from inside???!!! Internal block should be enough!!! It's pointles to use that pin to prevent magazine from cleaning !! Such limitations are illega and I hope NRA do something against those unlawful bans !!!!
First, I agree that it is BS to limit mag size etc. Second, if you own a gun, you likely have a punch set. Use the punch on the center of the rivet and punch the rivet loose. Clean and re-rivet. The law at the time of this video... years ago now... was that the magazine had to be permanently fixed to limit round size. Most people JB weld or glue their mags shut to get the "permanent" part compliied with. My solution is less destructive.

Is the spring the same, seems like thered be a little too much tension. I have the 10/30 rnd which is meant to take 10 rnds and the spring is super short.
The spring is the same. The 20 round block fits inside the spring so no change is necessary.

This method sucks. Just put a rivet on the spine of the Pmag at 3.88 inches down from the very bottom of the cutout at the top of the mag. Basically drill the hole just below the first horizontal line in the back of the mag. The top of the rivet should rest on the bottom of the horizontal line. Much easier to do and does the same thing. Use black rivets and they will blend in.
Sadly Canada does that a small little 1/8 rivet in the spine of the magazine I hate it it ruins all my mag wells, I rather the spine left alone and the bottom have a small rivet

Yeah buying a tool with no intention of keeping it, just to use it and then return it is kind of a jerk thing to do. It's like buying a suit to wear to a wedding and then returning it.

I don't think this is legal in any state. By simply drilling out the pin you are back to a 30 round magazine.
CALIFORNIA Under California law, a “large capacity magazine” is an ammunition feeding device that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. The definition does not include [ feeding devices PERMANENTLY ALTERED so that it cannot hold more than 10 rounds] (Cal. Penal Code § 16740).
MASSACHUSETTS Massachusetts defines a “large capacity feeding device” as: a (1) fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip or similar device capable of accepting, or that can be READILY CONVERTED to accept, more than 10 rounds of ammunition. (Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 140 § 121)
NEW YORK New York prohibits the manufacture, transportation, disposal, and possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices. Prior law defined a large capacity feeding device as “a magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device” “that has a capacity of, or that can be READILY RESTORED or converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition.” (NY Penal Code §§ 265.00(23), 265.02(8) & 265.10).

Shane K Yes. you can still use anything grandfathered. I dont know about transfer-ability of it though. I know you cant buy preban mags and claim they were yours preban. Anyone under 40ish would have a really hard time claiming they owned them legally preban
+Shane K They cannot be used in any semi-auto that has a bullet button. Also, they are illegal to import into the state unless you first owned them in the state, took them out, and brought them back in. It is all going to be a moot point anyways because Newsome's ballot measure when passed, will make any magazine over 10 round illegal, regardless.
