  • For 26 years, Scott Brayton's pole speed at the 1996 Indy 500 marked the fastest speed for a polesitter in event history. That speed was eclipsed by Scott Dixon in the 2022 event. Here is a side-by-side comparison of the two runs.

Scott's lap is dag gone scary fast 😲 but can you imagine what it felt, looked like in 1996? 🤯

If the CART/IRL split didn't happen, imagine what a Team Penske car in CART would have done in 2000 at Indianapolis... Gil de Ferran did a 241mph average speed lap at Fontana that year. Those cars were absolute bullets back then.

It’s all about cornering speeds now. More efficient aero and going much quicker in the corners now with less power. Doing more with less.
Back then it was pure straight line speed but not so much in the corners.
Can you imagine running a beast engine from 1996 and putting it in a modern day chassis, tire, and aero package?

Its interesting to see how Brayton's lap speeds mostly went upwards except for Lap 2. Dixons lap speeds kept getting a little slower and slower which is to be expected.

    • @HighlandCall

Brayton's car had the increased boost allowed as a stock block-derived engine and I believe in 1996 they might have been fucking with the pop-off valve to get even more than they should (they did that one at some point); so he was probably lifting in the corners which they don't do with the modern cars. The fall-off of the current cars is all tyre dropoff: the old cars would have had that but because they were probably lifting it also means that you have Brayton feeling more confident and keeping more in it on the later laps that compensates.
What makes the 2022 lap remarkable for me is that they did it with possibly a 300bhp differential to Brayton's car: just goes to show how efficient the current package is. They also had by far the best conditions (1996 pole day was windy and cold; that's why Arie went 4mph faster on Day 2 of qualifying) which helped Dixon

@@HighlandCall Brayton's car is just a straight line bullet, with brute force power. Dixon's car is a slick efficient cornering beast. Either way, these guys rule.
