I did some studio work with Annie back in the 80s. This is at the pinnacle of the digital music age. MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) where you could connect loads of keyboards, drum machines and computers together was still in it's infancy and I learned a lot from her at the time. She's a very kind and sweet lady and very down to earth. I remember one of the synths mysteriously having a glitch and making a loud farting sound and it took 10 minutes for us to stop laughing. An amazing artist and a truly wonderful human being. ✌️♥️🇬🇧
I love the dichotomy of this song ! Every verse is an explicit warning about the misery and danger of love... but the chorus is... but I want you, but I want you... It's unsettling in it's honesty...
Released 40 years ago, which still sounds as fresh and cutting edge as it did back then. Also, Eurythmics were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, which you guys should check out and Annie Lennox's voice is still powerful. She ages like fine wine.
40 YEARS! ZOWIE! I was a teen when this came out, so it's funny to think that 40 years before _this_ was stuff like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" as the cutting-edge sound (during WWII)! Looking at your profile, you stated you're "in the wrong generation." Don't fret and *be grateful* - you're in the generation that can *access* and look back at these past great artists (from Beethoven, to Barbra Streisand, to Barry Gibb) whenever you'd like. Most people won't and have no clue, so that's __their_ loss. Embody those past generations' greatness, pass it on to others, and I'll try to do the same so we all will benefit! ✌👍
My favorite Eurythmics song. Annie Lennox has such a fantastic voice. From her time in Eurythmics to her solo work there's a big catalog of fantastic songs to explore.
Great group from the '80s and early '90s. New wave. Many hits from them. Lennox has a wonderful strong voice. Pretty lady. Check out Lennox solo stuff from the '90s and '00s, too. Lots of hits.
Their sound was so revolutionary back in the day. That warm soulful vocal layered on the cool synth sound. I remember this when it was released. It sounded extraordinary and still sounds it today
Some of the best lyrics ever to describe love, and yes Brad, it can be just as addictive as any drug, and you absolutely can have long term ‘withdrawals’.
1983. Eurythmics dropped "Love Is a Stranger" as the third single from their second album. MTV ran this video quite a lot after the success of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" raised the demand for their music. Seeing Annie Lennox in the blond wig and later the black wig was somewhat thrilling for fifteen year old me. A buddy of mine bought that album and I copied it to tape for me. I used to play it all the time. "Love Is a Stranger" opens the album. The synths firmly attach the song to the eighties, but the reverb echoed guitar strums evoke Tommy James "Crimson and Clover" from the sixties. The chorus melody is super catchy, but the bridges are where this song shines, imo. "It touches and it teases as you stumble in the debris..."
The video was banned in some places as they thought it was a man posing as a woman who then takes the wig off. It was boundary pushing for the time. Love this song... the imagery of being tempted into a car by love and being driven away is a mixture of temptation and danger.
I... have nothing to add. I've loved this song for a few decades now and you two picked up on every lyrical point I'd have wanted to make ! Although I never considered the transition aspect of it before... lol But Yeah I get how this song evokes a transition from hopelessly naive about love to jaded cynic to helplessly out-of-control again, which is the absolute roller-coaster nature of it ! I mean THIS is the song that I'd point to if I had to explain love to someone. "It's noble and it's brutal", "love love love Is a dangerous drug You have to receive it And you still can't Get enough of the stuff ", "It comes in like the flood", " it wrenches you up And you're left like a zombie"... And there's something about the beat and Annie Lennox's vocals that just sells every line, like it's absolute truth. Love is precious, makes life worth living and you can't live without it... but it's at some points horrible and makes you wish you'd never lived...
The Eurythmics had a bunch of top 10 singles, but this, their first hit, was always my favourite song of theirs. (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart actually had a smash hit two years earlier with their cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You", but that was recorded under their previous band name: The Tourists.)
My favorite Eurythmics video! To me, the ventriloquist dummy is crucial to understanding the video imagery, that her obsession gradually made her his puppet, and her physical transformation was a representation of her mental and emotional transformation.
Loved this when it came out - it did ok in the UK but then they released "Sweet Dreams" and that was MASSIVE - could never understand why. I like this better
i agree. i was a huge Eurythmics fan when they first became popular, I bought this album (and all of them after that). On first listen, this song (love is a stranger) was my favorite and still is. Some other really great ones too!
Me too. I think Sweet Dreams is really overrated. I mean, it gave them a huge break - the first two albums really hadn't done much commercially up to then and we might never have got the later albums without a big hit at that moment, so hurrah for that. But it's far from their best work, even on this album.
Totally agree. And I'll just point out that the "Love Is a Stranger" camp is far more passionate about this song! If you read the comments on any "Sweet Dreams" post vs the comments on any "Love Is a Stranger" post, it's like night and day!
I. Regret. Not. Having. A. Daughter. And. Naming. Her. Annie. In. Full. Respect. To. This. Brilliant. Artist. WOW. This. Is. A. Good. Song. One. Of. A. Kind.
I'm so happy you did this song! What a surprise! This song means so much to me. I recently finished my list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time Ranked, and "Love Is a Stranger" was number two. I've been a fan of Eurythmics and Annie from the first time I heard this song.
Annie was a STUNNINGLY beautiful woman and the media back then were going "You're so beautiful, why do you insist on looking so masculine and manly?" So to shut those people up, she once performed this song live dressed up as a man, 30-odd years prior to Lady Gaga doing the same.
Annie is my fave!!! This song is one of my faves by Eurythmics and definitely my favorite 80s video!!!!!!! Their videos are always creative...try I Need A Man, Would I Lie To You, Missionary Man
She had about as much success in the 80's as Madonna, Tina Turner and Cyndi Lauper. A very compelling singer. And she kept it going well into the 90's and beyond. So many great jams but my favorites are probably "Into the West," "No More I Love Yous," and "Walking on Broken Glass." Another classic from the 80's is "Would I Lie to You?" Amazing.
Hi Brad and Lex. Do you know Annie Lennox is from Aberdeen in Scotland? If you want to hear the early years of Annie and Dave, look for The Tourists from 1979, particularly their cover of Dusty Springfield's song 'I Only Wanna Be With You'. Æx 🙏
She did _Love Song for a Vampire_ for Coppola's Dracula film. It's haunting. There's not a lot about Annie Lennox that isn't, but that song hits me in a way, you know?
It's so perfectly matched to the imagery and gothic look of the film. The lyrics and music have a timeless sense to them which is perfect for a vampire. I like to imagine that when Annie was writing it, she had a note that read "Love Song for a Vampire" as a daily reminder to work on the song for the film. When it was time to give it a title, she noticed the note, and thought, what could possibly be a better title! All in my head of course. 😂
Imagine being a teenager in the middle of Nebraska in the 80s and hearing this new/different sound out of Europe (along with Depeche Mode, New Order, etc). Such an awesome new soundtrack for to your life. Great stuff.
Wow - haven't heard this one in Forever! Oh, yeah - sometimes some people can go thru literal withdrawals caused by 'Love' (Lust). I always enjoyed her cover of WAITING IN VAIN - there are two excellent recordings; one is from the soundtrack of "Serendipity", and the other is the official music video.
Brad, Brad... so deep today. Jaaa, Eurythmics are so great musicians. Dave with his synth-composing skills an annie with her great voice an unique look. I liked your view to the video and the song. What you need to know: Annie and Dave used to be a couple, when success startet in their musical career. They kept together for a lot more albums, but they already took sperate ways when this song came out.
This is my favorite song by the Eurythmics I love the beat to this song it makes me wanna dance and its a driving beat like a an open car and love her voice and the sounds in the song. Its a brilliant put together song, and sayng you want someone so much its an obsession, shes has got a great voice, they are a husband and wife team and they are great
Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were never married. They were in a relationship when they were both in The Tourists, but broke up when the group broke up. Lennox and Stewart still wanted to work together professionally, so they formed Eurythmics, and the rest is history.
Great video I love it when you do 1980’s new wave type stuff as they was such an interesting period with such unique sounds. You have reviewed so many songs, can you please list them somewhere alphabetically so we can see which ones you already reviewed? That way you won’t keep getting requests for ones you already reviewed. Keeping in spirit with moody new wave songs, here are some suggestions, Porcelain by Moby, Beautiful World by Devo, Never Let Me Down by Depeche Mode, Ship of Fools by World Party, Dancing With Tears in My Eyes by Ultravox. These were all big hits for these bands.
This video was originally banned on MTV because they thought Annie Lennox was a cross-dresser - they only allowed it after she produced her birth certificate!
There's something perfect about the way she sings "And love, love, love is a dangerous drug". It's affected me since I first heard it when it was released. If you ever get the chance check out "Sex Crime (1984)" - don't be scared by the title, it's from the film and it's a beautiful love song. In a sad, desperate way.
The Eurythmics sound has never been copied AFAIK: warm synths and cold vocals - it's usually the other way round. And the lyrics go deep. Their earlier albums are best, before they reverted to a more Tourists-like sound.
Annie Lennox and Agnetha Faltskog are my all-time favourite singers, both have an unmatched ability to tell a story just through the control of their vocals. Very different ladies, but absolute genius singers. Lex, you seem to consistently 'get' song lyrics, although sometimes you have to remember the era the song is from, and factor that into your analysis. And I hope you don't mind me saying, but you are a stunningly attractive lady yourself.
Have you ever listened to the track "I Did It Just the Same"? It's on Eurythmics' 1984 soundtrack (the music they made for the film). If you haven't, I recommend it based on your comment. It's the first song on the album and Annie doesn't sing any lyrics. She begins with humming, then goes through a series of yeah, yeah, yeahs, hey, hey, heys, bobom, bobom, bobom, etc. What's remarkable about it is that Annie takes you through every emotion from the novel: fear, sorrow, paranoia, hope, despair, anger, rage, and more, without singing one meaningful word. To me, this overlooked track proves she's one of the greatest singers of the last century.
LOVE, *_in all its forms,_* is most assuredly the biggest motivating factor for most humans so it is *definitely* like a drug. Geniuses to psychos are, and forever will be, chasing after "Love." ✌
One of the best female vocalists ever.
100%
remember her singing duet with david bowie at the Freddy Mercury Memorial concert.
In my list of "Goddesses Of Song". 🙏
Absolutely 💯
Just behind A M

Very cool story!
😎😎😎🍹
Was she as stunning as she appeared on to?
Annie Lennox another brilliant Scottish singer from Aberdeen
Annie Lennnox is such a brilliant vocalist, her range is amazing .
This song really shows off Annie's vocal range . She is so on control of her gift! Also the lyrical content of the song is just fantastic 😍
One of my favorites from the Eurythmics. Annie Lennox is one of a kind.
Such a brilliant song. One of my favourite by them.
Fantastic vocal from Annie L; really shows off how good she is.
It is my favorite... easily, but "Here Comes The Rain Again" is really close.
@@paulwalsh2344 Me same plus Sweet dreams and It's lright(baby 's coming home)
I love the dichotomy of this song ! Every verse is an explicit warning about the misery and danger of love... but the chorus is... but I want you, but I want you...
It's unsettling in it's honesty...

Annie's eyes are just amazing,,,,,,
Still the best band I have EVER seen live - on the Sweet Dreams tour, will be 40 years ago this summer.
My favorite Eurythmics song. Annie Lennox has such a fantastic voice. From her time in Eurythmics to her solo work there's a big catalog of fantastic songs to explore.
My favorite Eurythmics song...excellent choice!!
Annie, champion of so many causes. Oh, and a great frickin voice. 👍❤🤙
Great group from the '80s and early '90s. New wave. Many hits from them. Lennox has a wonderful strong voice. Pretty lady. Check out Lennox solo stuff from the '90s and '00s, too. Lots of hits.
Brilliant classic song....outstanding pure brilliance ! Her voice is outstanding. Annie Lennox. 🥰
More Eurythmics!! The entire Revenge album is gold!!
The two are taken by the spirit of that master piece of 🎶🎵🎶🎵
Their sound was so revolutionary back in the day. That warm soulful vocal layered on the cool synth sound. I remember this when it was released. It sounded extraordinary and still sounds it today
That was totally Agent Smith from _The Matrix_ at the end. Prophetic! 😜
Some of the best lyrics ever to describe love, and yes Brad, it can be just as addictive as any drug, and you absolutely can have long term ‘withdrawals’.
“17 Again” by these 2 never got the recognition that it deserved. It’s set to a beautiful video.
I've always loved Annie Lennox's voice. I saw her play with Sting and what a show it was. \m/ \m/

Getting a good copy on a TDK, Maxwell or Memorex metal tape? Man,.. that's old school.
That Voice !!!!
Now that's what I call modern, contemporary poetry. Bravo Eurythmics!
Brad & Lex, you'll love Annie Lennox's "Walking On Broken Glass" and "Why" from her solo career!!!
Walking on broken glass is her best Video
they gotta do Why...
Amazingly Annie could do this live on stage and sound pretty much the same. My favourite Eurythmics track. Annie's birthday is on Christmas day!
Yes I saw them in concert a few times. She always sounded amazing.
Their best song
Beyond brilliant epic vocals epic song
Their style may diverge from today's musical trends, but despite this, their songs continue to be listened to, and that says a lot!
Anne had many looks
I listen to this 3 times a week. REGULARLY. I can't say it better than that.
One of my favorites from them!

Beautiful too
One of my favorites by them. So unique.

Little Bird is my favorite of hers
My favorite Eurythmics video! To me, the ventriloquist dummy is crucial to understanding the video imagery, that her obsession gradually made her his puppet, and her physical transformation was a representation of her mental and emotional transformation.
The grunts were Dave's vocal contribution to the effort; he didn't want Annie to have all of the fun.
Loved this when it came out - it did ok in the UK but then they released "Sweet Dreams" and that was MASSIVE - could never understand why. I like this better

Great song by a great band (duo). Annie is definitely a top vocalist, female or otherwise. Just terrific.
My favorite Eurythmics song
I was drawn to this song as a teenager - not sure why. It is like the music itself is telling a story.
Recently inducted to the Hall Of Fame! Sweet Dreams is a great album! Absolutely ground breaking with it's use of Synthesizers!

Can't believe you haven't done Lennox's "Walking on Broken Glass" yet, but I guess you'd need a 90s stream for that...
Yes, they need to another '80s/'90s stream. Been awhile for that one.
They do '70s/'80s & '90s/'00s streams too often.
Great choice.

Exactly what I was thinking!
Dave Stewert is a Genius
They have a great remix of this song
Love how they dont pause it to chat. That's when you know ❤
This is their best tune IMO.

kind of an odd song, but I ♥ it. Annie's vocal range is krazy good!

Who Annie Lennox and dave Stewart ? They were never married ,they had a brief relationship
Annie was never married to dave Stewart her 1st husband was german a hare Krishna devotee. Then Israeli born uri fruchtmann. Then mitch besser

So many great tracks from this band. Try, love you like a ball and chain or sisters are doing it for themselves.
Works well with Temptation from Heaven 17, Walking on the moon from the Police, Just can't get enough from Depeche Mode and Fade to grey from Visage.
Check out the music video. At first her movements are gentle and natural, and finally mechanical.
There's something perfect about the way she sings "And love, love, love is a dangerous drug". It's affected me since I first heard it when it was released.
