One of the first sets i learned on flute over 40 years ago. Must have been out of my mind, but I still play it to this day with joy. Matt set me on the right path.
Without these guys Irish music today would sound completely different. It strikes me that all their tunes have become classics. What an amazing world we live in, to see this band reunited.
Playing from music? Oh dear, don't they know their tunes? No other Irish band or group that I have ever seen would ever descend to playing from written music. Also, a decent bodhran player would help. Not impressed.
I worked for Ceoltas, and all learner musicians were taught to read. It is the quickest way to learn the bones of the tunes. As far as I know all the members of the Chieftains were readers. You do not have to read, but it is a great bonus. You know the old joke, the best way to play the bodhran is with a penknife.
They’re not playing from music and they definitely know their tunes. These are some of the best traditional musicians in the country. It’s been more than forty years since they played together, so I imagine they needed a few prompts and reminders.

And all their recorded sets have become standards!
I completely agree, you have good taste!
Never having seen them at the height of their fame, I had the pleasure of seeing them play in Belfast in April. They were superb.
Always liked the group from moment I first saw them in concert in Liverpool in 1977.
When is the grand world tour?!? We all need it!
What a great band…we owe them so much……unsure of the title of the second tune?
The uilleann pipes coming in, is masterful, and gets a yelp outta the audience every time.
The Kid on the Mountain always creates that slip jig excitement.
... even more so when all 6 parts are played
Great and inspirational- and their 70s clip.of The Kesh Jig with Matt Molloy still sends shivers down the spine,so liquid.
Great stuff -thanks Mr Bolton!
Was the camera on the moon.
Great.
News to me it's a set but good to know.
❤️👌🎶💯
Celtic my arse!
Awesome. Does anyone have a setlist?
Who s the guitar player on the right ? Is it Micheàl o Domhnail?
Sadly, Micheal died in 2006. Sean Og Graham is sitting in for him on guitar.
Sadly not Michael
Only wish they just had Kevin Burke on fiddle and not Paddy Glackin. Looking forward to more shows and possibly a US tour thanks for posting
Lacking and Burke are both playing
GLACKIN sorry!
well, they look older and not as easy to recognize......like the rest of us who recall those days, eh?
What’s wrong with having Paddy there?

Why is the recording quality so piss poor? Audience sounds better than the performance.
Because it’s someone obviously at the concert for their own enjoyment and not to produce a high quality recording?
The cameraman mustn't have received your subscription to buy that better equipment.

I'm listen with a small not expensive head phones, try, the sound is terrific
Because it was recorded on a phone that was not plugged into the sound system!
Because it's free and the first time we've been able to enjoy them this way in so many years! The fact that it's even happening is a miracle itself.
