    This is not just a great watercolor tutorial, it's also a terrific demonstration of how to use photo-reference the correct way! Plenty of improvisation, not restricted by the photo, let the paint do its thing!

    Thanks Lindsay. It's so difficult to not paint what you think you SHOULD see instead of just shapes and shadows. Tell you what though, (and anyone reading the comments) , Lindsay your drawing course for beginners is helping so much with this! Anyone who wants to paint better, I suggest taking Lindsay's drawing course. There's so much cross over information. Lindsay has specials on her courses a few times a year. Treat yourself! Really worth it!💜

    I love your colors in this! You captured beautiful, shimmering light on waves really well. Painting the waves looked effortless, but I’ve always had trouble with that. I vote for more landscape watercolor tutorials, please and thank you!

    Love it! Thanks for continuing to provide Watercolor Wednesday tutorials! I appreciate the beginner lessons as much as the complex. Sometimes, I just want to relax and play which make landscapes so great. Not too many details to worry about. Thanks again!

    First, I love the voiceover - start to finish - very informational. It strategically guides and boosts the confidence of the painter; can't miss with it. The instructions on painting the water were awesome and spot on; all the little nuances matter much. Your instructions, and example, on painting the sky and mountains were first class - top notch. That you've automatically noted the tools and supplies is greatly appreciated. Your over all tips and techniques are super... and yet you leave the artist to be himself/herself - as free as a bird - in the process of creating. The finished product here of your waterscape is beautiful. Thank you very much. 😍❤❤❤😊

    Hullo Lindsay, you are so spot on with your instructions! People forget to pause or stop the video! Painting takes time and nobody has the ability to paint as fast as most videos on UA-cam! I understand why you recommend the very inexpensive supplies, not everyone has the money for better supplies. I am in the camp of getting the best you can afford, if you must skimp, skimp on paints but never on paper! You can drive yourself insane with cheap papers! I have found that more cheap paints work fine until you want to save or sell your artworks! If your trying to level up your painting experience 100% cotton paper is a MUST! Then buying professional grade paints is the next step. Now you don’t have to buy the best or highest priced paint out there! Once you get to the Artist level paints finding the paint that lets you be you is key. I started with Grumbacher Artist grade. I broke away from my early teaching and tried many brands, most are available in samples or dot cards! I purchased Mission Gold by Mijello, the after watching Denise Soden became enamored with DaVinci Paints of California and I was blown away by the quality of paint for the price! Not every professional grade paint must cost you your monthly Salary! Ok enough soap boxing! Lovely painting Lindsay thank you for sharing another quality video for beginners as well as for others who need to keep their practice times interesting!

      Fun fact, blick brand watercolor are made by grumbacher. They are the same as their finest line so if you like them you might like blick. I have only tried one tube of blick and I didn't care for it (but i might have picked a bad representation)

      If you got the cheaper Phoenix tubes (the ones that cost $10 for 24 colors on Amazon) I don't recommend them. They are very weak and streaky. The set I used today is around $14 right now, or at least it was, and it is loads better. I just don't want you to be dissapointed when a couple extra bucks will buy the better paint.

    When I try to do a landscape, I go for mountains because I live near the Canadian Rockies.
    I don't do sea scenes because I don't know how to make waves look realistic.
    I appreciate any video on painting a seascape.
    PS I like your explanation for using Chinese White. I plan to go to a local art store to buy a cat tongue brush, so I can look for this color too.

    Nice landscape. I originally was not impressed with swatching these paints directly from the tube onto canson xl so I let them dry and they performed better on cotton paper. A good value for student paints. I really don’t know if it is the same manufacturer of cotmans it doesn’t appear to be but you have more experience. Tfs

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому +1

      To my eye I think it is, well since cotman moved to China. I think the french made cotmans are a touch better but Phoenix is identical to Chinese mafe cotman tubes and pans right down to the name and pigment numbers for the 40 colors in the cotman range.

    I don't have a good set of watercolors or a palette. Is this one you'd recommend for a somewhat beginner? I have a decent budget for art supplies.
    Also, just wanted to say I enjoy your videos - informative, funny, and just fun to watch! Thanks!!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  2 роки тому

      They are arounf $14 for 24 colors so I'd day yes but I'd pull the strong colors and put them in a palette so you are only working from the best colors. I'll have a full review on these in about 2 weeks. Rosa Gallery is a little better. The set of 24 is under $30 l. I have a review of that here: ua-cam.com/video/6dB7qQ_GlFQ/v-deo.html I'd recommend that over the Phoenix personally. The set of 12 I'd great too and around $15
      Another great pick is pretty excellent watercolor. A set of 36 half pans is around $25. Review here: ua-cam.com/video/rFRO6UPqzWA/v-deo.html

    quick question: how would you compare these paints to Art Whale? ( is one better than the other? is it better to have a cheaper set like this for practice/ learning ?)

  • @kriskrumanaker4315
    @kriskrumanaker4315 2 роки тому +1

    QUESTIONS: Say you are using Permanent Rose (or any color) from this set in this tutorial. How would it possibly be different in another set? For example, would it be the saturation of the amount of pigment, or could it be the binder? You know, is Permanent Rose the same in any set, and if so, why would there need to be so many sets? I've watched numerous of your reviews, you'd think I'd know the answer to this question by now! I hope you understand this question. Maybe the question is how do manufacturers most often make differences in their paints and still stick to a standard set of colors? Say you run out of Permanent Rose in this set. You can just grab a Permanent Rose from one of your many other sets and it would work the same? I've probably answered my own question, but if you can add anything to this, I would like to hear it. Thank you. Love your work. 😁

      Look at the undertones and which way the color leans. Dies it lean toward the warmer or cooler color next to it.
