  • December 11, 1997 (airing December 22, 1997) WWE, then WWF, hosted Monday Night RAW featuring dissention among the members of D-Generatio n X. The DX founders were forced to battle each other for the WWF European Championship, but they'd pull off their own version of the Fingerpoke of Doom - a moment in WCW history that irreparably damaged the company.. so why was one so good and the other so bad?

If Hunter had won KOTR in 96 instead of Austin, it would have made little impact. Hunter was handheld throughout his career

Honestly, this episode of Raw sounds wild, I’m down for part 2.

Not many people realize that the same night as the finger poke of Doom, was the night Tony Shivani spoiled the main event of RAW and said his infamous line "That's going to put butts in the seats".

Umm.. EVERYONE knew that he said that. That is what made it so significant. A bunch of people switched channels to Raw to watch the title change.

I agree with all the reasons why DX’s version worked, but also would add that it was entertaining/funny as hell IMO.

DX is all you need. No need to recap the rest of the show.

That wasnt as bad as WCW. Triple H was rising up and he was held back cuz of the curtain call. This was one way to elevate his name. Also DX as a group wasn't even in their prime yet, to early to break up the stable, when hey had far more dividends.

This worked because DX was getting started and the Euro title isn’t as important as the world title. The WCW finger poke marked the return of the NWO which nobody wanted again

The greatest thing about that match was Jim Cornett's rant.

I’d watch the deluxe version. That show seems wild.
Great episode. I agree with ya. DX really leaned into the ham. It was their schtick to not care. NWO cared too much for as clowny as they were. This fit the DX brand way better.
P.s. revenge is still one of the best wrestling games ever ;)

Another bait and switch I thought was awesome was when the new age outlaws pan each other to keep the tagteam titles

I don’t think I would consider this a fingerpoke of doom, this was more like what happened at bash at the beach 2000 when Jeff Jarrett layed down for hulk hogan

The DX version worked because of how it was all played out. The authority figure in Sgt Slaughter been trying to keep DX in line & thought he had 1 up'd them. They teased the dissension the whole episode & pulled the swerve laughing at the authority in the end. With Nash, the fans thought he would have a decent title run with having just won the title a few days before dropping it to Hogan & his creative control idea. It came across poor in taste that night when Mick Foley put on a performace to win the WWE title on the other channel

I remember this match well. It's much better than the Fingerpoke of Doom because it was actually entertaining. And Jim Cornette sold it well. Also worth noting that this episode ran against the Starrcade '97 go-home Nitro, where WCW took nearly an hour to switch the set over to nWo Nitro theming, which made for a boring Nitro.

Oh god.. yeah I plan to talk about NWO Nitro one day - maybe next year if I can get a guest appearance or two

The NWO nitro was gold. Only a WWE crybaby would think otherwise.
