I was a passive listener of Gabriel until I heard this song... this track just totally blew my mind. Now I just think that anything Peter does or has done is Genius, I listen to his work every chance I get.
Man, his vocal control on this song just blows me away every time. The way he’s able to hold the long “soul” line out, just blows my mind. Security is an incredible album!
It was originally titled Carl Jung in Africa. He went to an African ritual and he was terrified and captivated at the same time. Almost as if the drums put him into a hypnotic state.
I once heard this song as background music in a Miami Vice episode. Suspense all over, the song was actually scarier than the Miami Vice scene ... This song is an absolute masterpiece.
I first heard this at 3 in the morning, bored out of my skull and sleep-deprived. Blew my fecking mind. I'm an atheist but that was closest thing to a religious experience I'll ever have :)
On Jung's journey to Africa and his fear of losing himself to the beat of the drums. One can relate. "The spirit enters into me and I submit to trust."
Agree with all comments, Gabriel is on a different level. Thanks for posting Rhythm... but this video is far removed from the primal feelings that seem to drive the music and lyrics that behind this song
This song gives me chills up my spine. One of my favourite songs of all time, not just by the master Peter Gabriel. Something about this song brings out something ancient and primal and tribal. I love how I can see (in my mind) a dark night, just a fire in the middle of nowhere, just the dry heat of the desert and dust, with so much magic around. Truly a captivating and consuming song. I love it.
@DjDejoahi1000 Is it too comlicated to put a year of the song in description tab? It IS important, especially for the young/younger generation! Song is from 1982.. One of the masterpiece.
Who went crazy! Do you think there is anything to undergirding public education with his philosophies and books by LSD Aldus Huxley and school shootings, depression, suicide, etc? Any Christians reading this need to put their children in Christian school or homeschool.
I’m being born 1985, fully associate myself with this music. I first heard it accompanying David Copperfield’s famous levitation upon jets of water performance.
the rhythm has my soooul" feel a heating shiver in that part, it's like going back to roots, to our human tribe, belonging earth ground and recovering the fire as an impulse to live..wich is your tribe? your ancestors, mine were the huancas, here in Perú.
This song reminds me of a dream I had a few years ago which has stayed with me to this day. In the dream, I was in a laundrette of all places talking to a man who turned into a shaman. He place a large acupuncture-like pin in the centre of my head before his eyes rolled to the back of his head. He then told me to take his hand, and when I did, I entered a trance and found myself in some sort of tribal initiation ceremony. I heard lots of chanting and drumming and felt hands touching me all over then suddenly woke up.
@CitySkin09 Absolutely agree with you. I get the same feeling when listening to this song. Fits very good to the atmosphere of Princess Mononoke, too. I was surprised they used a western song for an anime, cause it's rare.
One of my favorite endings to any song!! When I got this album in the '80's (right before I saw Gabriel perform live), I played this song at least 1874 times. I just couldn't get enough of it.
don't forget to check out his work with early Genesis- I would suggest - selling england by the pound. nursery crimes and trespass and foxtrot. masterpieces all
OK, I'm using this for a mini-rant. Yes, or what he did, Phil Collins cannot hold a candle to Peter, no disagreement, But I still maintain that if you just take Phil Collins on his own terms that there was some good that came out of that one. The entire first half of Genesis (1983) I thought was brilliant, as an example. No, he's not Peter, but he's not supposed to be (and he even said so himself, that the early years of Genesis sated his taste for extremes). All just my .02
Superb: the power of the heat that takes soul and control, like to Jung in his african experience, which this video and this powerful track is inspired to.
It is well known that this song is based on C. G. Jung's travel to Africa. While trying to understand the concepts of the collective unconscious, Jung joined a tribe of dancers and drummers. When he listened to the music Jung became overwhelmed by the fear of losing control of himself.
I hate my name now...friggin youtube made me change it, and I want to change it back...if anyone knows how, please let me know. Peter and Paul (Simon) are both very against political wrongdoings if you will, and Phil has had his share of songs regarding same. I do know that Peter and Paul, have utilized musicians from other countries in their bands, which I think is great, and essentially coveys the message that they're trying to send in their songs...Sting as well. Out of space...Peace all.
@SkubalaHead Thats a cool memory and a cool dad. It came out when I was in 8th grade but I bought it during high school. I used to lay in the dark and listen to this song as well as the whole birdy film score. Really there aren't any words to describe where it took me.
Best song from the best Miami Vice episode ever. (Evan) Say what you want about the cheezy acting, that show had the best sound design of the 80's.
You don't listen to a Peter Gabriel song. You live it.
And last but not least it´s in Miami Vice; the opening of the episode "Evan". One of the greatest one of the show!
:)
THE greatest episode!!!!!!
I was a passive listener of Gabriel until I heard this song... this track just totally blew my mind. Now I just think that anything Peter does or has done is Genius, I listen to his work every chance I get.
There is so much,i see and listening.different songs
❤💚💜
You probably already heard the music he made for the movie, the album title is : "Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ"

Peter Gabriel can pull emotions from me that I didn't even know existed.
The rhythm is inside me. The rhythm has my soul.

I love this man. What a fucking great example of life.
Not only a great example of life but also a great example of an artist
I once heard this song as background music in a Miami Vice episode. Suspense all over, the song was actually scarier than the Miami Vice scene ...
This song is an absolute masterpiece.
That episode was Evan!....
MAC-10 the name of the episode was "Evan"
I remember that episode 😄
The opening to perhaps the greatest episode of "Miami Vice" ever!
moneylab watching now.
Evan
YESSSSS!
Indeed, this song really fit the opening of Evan.
100% AGREE!!!
gabriel is so far ahead of his time a modern mozart at least he has enjoyed a rightly deserved following
I too think Peter is a bit too deep for many people aka general audience. Not everybody wills to get into the depth Peter possesses. I love his music.
@@ianmlclm7044 :)...He is amazing!
The percussion in this piece is just phenomenal. It's as if Gabriel opened up a time capsule from 20,000 BC.
I first heard this at 3 in the morning, bored out of my skull and sleep-deprived. Blew my fecking mind.
I'm an atheist but that was closest thing to a religious experience I'll ever have :)
Check out the movie natural born killers.🐍🦂
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life
On Jung's journey to Africa and his fear of losing himself to the beat of the drums. One can relate.

first time I feel in love with this song, was on Miami Vice "Evan".💖💖💖💖💖
Me too, Marion.
Agree with all comments, Gabriel is on a different level.
Thanks for posting Rhythm... but this video is far removed from the primal feelings that seem to drive the music and lyrics that behind this song
The days of vastly talented musicians. Long gone!
When he cries out, I cry out too: THE RYTHEM HAS MY SOUL!!!!
Mine too.
This song gives me chills up my spine. One of my favourite songs of all time, not just by the master Peter Gabriel. Something about this song brings out something ancient and primal and tribal. Peter Gabriel is a true genius. Saw him in the 80's at Wembley on an Amnesty International Concert. I still get goosebumps listening to his music!
He always been eccentric!!! That's what I love ❤️ about him!
I LOVE his compositions! Peter Gabriel is one of the most creative musicians of our time.
The scream at the beginning or the song gives me primal energy
From the opening of the Miami Vice episode : "Evan"
@DjDejoahi1000 Is it too comlicated to put a year of the song in description tab? It IS important, especially for the young/younger generation! Song is from 1982.. One of the masterpiece.
it's a great i love it ,it's alittle bit scary !!!! and that s the most tuching thing
He opened the first show of the 2016 tour last night with this song. It was incredible.
I saw it as well. Utterly beautiful.
I just saw the show in LA last night. Great way to open the show with this song!
Agreed. Saw them in Denver. Kicked ass.
I was at Denver! Pepsi Center, right?
That was the place! We drove down from North Dakota 'cause we don't get a lot of my favorite artists here (unless they're country, LOL)
I can't believe how awesome this song is....the build-up is second to none.
I searched for this song for years after not finding it on Natural Born Killers soundtrack, im glad i found it and still listen to it.
You and me both!
same
It's been 25 years for me
It's on Peter Gabriel 4 (1982). It's the opening track of the album!...
Just a great. great song!!! Peter Gabriel is a GENIUS!!!!
Yo llegué aqui por V THE FINAL BATTLE de los '80s. No sabía que esta canción aparecía en Natural Born Killers.
I use this song to test my speakers
Kurtis Erikson I use this to test my earphones. Such a great sound. 😎
Kurtis Erikson hehehe
So how'd that test go? It would blow mine easily. have to keep it down a touch, but kick up the subs, wow. Great wild song -as loud as you can go!
Love that this song was used in a David Copperfield illusion!!💗💗💗😉👍 can't wait to try using it for one of my own illusions one day...💗😉👍💯♾
Yep😁
part of this was used in Natural Born Killers
I came here because of Carl Gustav Jung.
Good call

song was inspired by Gabriel reading one of Jung's books. original working title was "Jung in Africa."
Yes, it is very C.G Jung.
Who went crazy! Do you think there is anything to undergirding public education with his philosophies and books by LSD Aldus Huxley and school shootings, depression, suicide, etc? Any Christians reading this need to put their children in Christian school or homeschool.
miami vice . Evan great tune though has to be said
This is a song that changed my life
Natural Born Killers "...just go get the stuff...go get the stuff..."
i say the same thing about the drumming at the end. simply hair raising.
Miami vice
I love the chanting part between 1:51 and 2:52.
Absolutely hair-raising.
That opening rhythm was used by Jerry Goldsmith for his score for the film Criminal Law (1988) starring Kevin Bacon and Gary Oldman.
Peter’s music invites listeners to create their own videos in their minds. I made plenty with this great song.
the rhythm has my sooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pretty amazing stuff and peter did things with music that
were unique and still now wonderful to hear!
This song was used perfectly in old Miami Vice episode.
It was Evan!...
@@carlosalomar7877 The best episode ever!
Natural Born Killers got me here
🦂🐍
Always will remind me of david copperfield and his tribal water levitation.
Kelly Hornblower so true :)
He used Lay your hands on me too!...
Yes!! That was so amazing..
Yup, David Copperfield bring me here
man the 80s were so epic
I’m being born 1985, fully associate myself with this music. I first heard it accompanying David Copperfield’s famous levitation upon jets of water performance.
Classic Miami Vice brought me here & I'm glad it did..
the rhythm has my soooul" feel a heating shiver in that part, it's like going back to roots, to our human tribe, belonging earth ground and recovering the fire as an impulse to live..wich is your tribe? your ancestors, mine were the huancas, here in Perú.
Mine were Romans
Amazing. A masterpiece, nothing else to say.
This song is so damn epic. Such a build-up and a climax that leaves you feeling like "Fuck...did that just happen?"
Yep, incredible !
Yes, but Phil Collins was an original member of Genesis. The Grammy's are a complete and total joke to me and have been for years.
I like when David Copperfield used this song during one of his illusions where he made a woman float in the air. Good music cues.
Me too
What a song! Pete at his best!
Amazing. I first heard this in @'88 and it still haunts me. Amazing on headphones.
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRDYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! what?
And la Bamba kicks right in!...
masterpiece
Yes. So visceral. A prelude to 'The Passion of the Christ' work.
This song reminds me of a dream I had a few years ago which has stayed with me to this day. In the dream, I was in a laundrette of all places talking to a man who turned into a shaman. that goes for the pairing eno+fripp/bowie as well
Absolutly and don't forget Sylvian/Fripp!...
That song known because of Miami Vice movie...
God damn this is so good
This is art!
Yep
It actually reminded me of a kate bush son when I heard a few bars in Natural Born Killers. I've been looking for this song for years
It's on Peter Gabriel 4 (1982). It's the opening track on the album!...
In my opinion the Grammy Awards are the biggest joke in the music industry. Its nothing but a popularity contest.
Youre Genius Peter!
Running with the wolves, hunting for blood or love..in my dream I hear THIS song...my soul is awakening, burning...
peter you are the greatest.
not forgetting the lamb lies down on broadway - a brilliant lp!
My stereo can't go loud enough!!!!! Brilliant!!!
@CitySkin09
Absolutely agree with you. I get the same feeling when listening to this song. Fits very good to the atmosphere of Princess Mononoke, too. I was surprised they used a western song for an anime, cause it's rare.
I got this album back in 83 I was 13. I knew I was hearing genius even then.
This is a real masterpiece!
miami vice...
Love his voice
The drummers are called Ekome if it helps. Song still packs a great big punch doesn't it.
don't forget brian eno, he created these incredible sounds as he did for david bowie's "heroes"... so mutch powerfull !!...
Eno/Fripp, Eno/Byrne, Fripp/Summers, Fripp/Sylvian!...
This drum outro is nothing more than cinematic
Yeah, he used on Birdy (1984)!...
Great Song and perfect in the Movie Birdy!!
Arthur Rimbaud I, alone, hold the keys to this parade,
This savage parade.
Great movie (1984)!....
Back when Nic Cage was an actor. The whole soundtrack was incredibly done.
The beat of this song is like Peter Gabriel put a stethoscope up against the Earth.
"Listen to my heart, don't need no stethoscope"
One of my favorite endings to any song!! When I got this album in the '80's (right before I saw Gabriel perform live), I played this song at least 1874 times. I just couldn't get enough of it.

this song was inspired by an experience the great man Carl Jung had while dancing with a tribe in Africa.
Superb: the power of the heat that takes soul and control, like to Jung in his african experience, which this video and this powerful track is inspired to.
I guess that this song gets too me so much because I am Native American. Very powerful rhythm. Pun intended.
Then give San Jacinto a try!....
oldasspunk got it right. This whole album is superb, and one of the best recorded albums of all time.
It is well known that this song is based on C. G. Jung's travel to Africa. While trying to understand the concepts of the collective unconscious, Jung joined a tribe of dancers and drummers. When he listened to the music Jung became overwhelmed by the fear of losing control of himself.

looking forward to Paul simon tune, boy in the bubble.
movie music a la miami vice "Evan"
@OroborusFMA
That doesn't matter though. Awards don't make great songs any better.
@SkubalaHead Thats a cool memory and a cool dad. It came out when I was in 8th grade but I bought it during high school. I used to lay in the dark and listen to this song as well as the whole birdy film score. Really there aren't any words to describe where it took me.
@Deredeo It sounds very much like it and wouldn't sound out of place if it were used in 'V' (The original)
Sounds like the theme tune to V the 80s tv mini series, look it up, you'll see the similarities!
He sings about “red dust” too!
You must be an incredibly important artist if Peter Gabriel is your muse.
I've never seen this video...I love Peter, and all he stands for. Love the percussion in this song!
Incredibly powerful song.
Holy shit, this is the theme song to "V - The Final Battle." Even mentions "Red dust" in the first verse.
V was my favorite show, as a kid. My mind is so fucking blown right now
It's on his Birdy soundtrack (1984)!...
David Copperfield Show brought me here. Great song by Peter Gabriel btw.
Same here
Classic. Rightly or wrongly I'm conjuring up an alternative past in which David Byrne joins him on stage in the big suit...
Another Big Genius!...
