China vs USA: War in the South China Sea

  • If war suddenly breaks out in the South China Sea, how might a flashpoint incident play out? HypOps simulates the sudden outbreak of hostilities over the Spratly islands due to a Chinese rocket shootdown of an American drone. We explore the geopolitical context of this hypothetical war and examine some of the weapons and technologies involved at the operational level. The HypOps team wargames each separate engagement and observes the tactics that emerge when opposing weapon systems clash.

    It would be awesome to see some how some real life "micro engagements" play out several times in the simulator like the Dutch F-16AM vs Serbian Mig-29 engagement over Yugoslavia. Curious if real scenarios could play out differently over various runs. Been binging your videos, I can see you surpassing quarter million subs in a year or so.

    Gambit is 100% an ace combat pilot
    -lone survivor of initial devastating conflict
    -narrowly escapes crashing via a timely rescue by support craft
    -ordered to return to base
    -later learns entire 2nd squad was wiped out
    -enemy tries to chase him, AWACS and tankers down
    -they break off narrowly at the last minute
    -the war seems in the enemies favour as they secure the disputed territory

    I'm really impressed with both the scenario and your presentation. As much as I love CMANO/CMO, it can be a bit dry visually even with TacView. The video elements of weapons systems are a great addition. I also am impressed with your ability to quickly explain tactics like cranking at a level that would be understandable for a general audience. I'm really excited for the next video, so keep up the amazing work!

      Couldn’t agree more with this comment about the quality of this video in content and visual aids. I do this at home with a few wargamers but with a traditional table top board game made by John Gorkowski called South China Sea by Compass Games. I had to make the entire US and PRC forces from scratch. Using CMO would’ve been a lot easier. Nice work and definitely getting a share or two on the Facebook Modern Naval Combat page.

      Consider THIS SCENARIO instead:
      The 🤩CoMMEEs🤩 says enough is enough...
      They say all cards are now on the table...
      They say they are prepared to lose all cities east of Xian (cuz they weren't going to have any of that bull)...
      They are on the top of the food chain where copycatting and learning is concern, they say Bay of Pigs...
      They go DIRECT for THE HEAD of THE SNAKE instead cuz a ten year civil war with Taiwan won't help...
      They LAUNCHED Operation Blockade Samson; all hell breaks lose; nukes starts flying every which way...
      They (🤩COMMEEs🤩) naturally got creamed cuz they are evil and God is never on their side as he does on Samson's...
      Samson come out victorious. He lives happily ever after again...
      Wow Man! I think I can be equally as popular as Arthur C Clark.

    I'm a little late hear i would have to believe the US would use F35's and not F16's in the first engagement if a S400 cant see them then radar on a J16 would be at a huge disadvantage. I showed this video to my retired F16 fighter pilot and he agreed we would use F35's just to be safe. If not F35's we would use drones with the F16's to help with survivability. I'm just an army ground ponder so i asked my buddy didn't think we would want a loss in the first engagement

      @AbsoluteZero6714 2 роки тому

      The J-20s probably wouldn’t be used as dogfighters due to their limited numbers and the fact that they aren’t the most maneuverable. I would imagine them to be deployed more strategically and used to target American early warning and tanker aircraft rather than getting tangled in dogfights against 4th generation or 5th generation US fighters. Instead, they’d be used to get into the rear of the US formations and launch PL-15s from a safe distance against American logistical and radar platforms.

      Yeah. That's probably smart. Halcyon is fighting blind and lame without AWACs and tankers. Jester has ground based radar and island based runways. Halcyon does not. I think Jester made a mistake in this video not going for the AWACs and the tankers. It would have been worth the sacrifice of the squadron if they could have taken down those platforms.

    Former F-15C pilot here. With that many aircraft and AWACS intel, we wouldn't be bunched up. We'd be spread with disparate vectors onto enemy/bulls so that enemy aircraft can only crank into another flight of F-15s, or skate away and abandon their missiles prior to pitbull. Second, I'd rather defend against bvr missiles at the end of their range/burn at high altitude due to the thin air and very small surface area of the missile control surfaces, gambling that thrust vector would be the only viable method of turning (if enabled) and thrust vectoring to catch me with my huge control surfaces in thin air would burn more missile fuel, thus lowering range. I'd only dive down to engage BFM and carry massive energy in a turn rate fight. Also no thought to ECM and/or jamming is considered here to evaluate your pk. Good effort though, the visualization was nice.

Would they really just prioritize merging into a massive furball like that as a way to deter each other, disregarding BVR capabilities? Seems like a really sketchy thing to do. Then again the "commanders" for each side were apparently "bloodthirsty warmongers" so I guess they were just trying to maximize the potential for combat. I guess the intent of the video was less academic and more entertainment focused.

    As there are some who do not seem to be aware: This simulation is run using the CMO software. The CMO software is a warfare simulator that has been used profesionally by various groups including Pentagon think tanks. The system is hilariously in depth and features just about every nitty gritty detail you can think of.
    The only diference between this and the pentagon version is that profesional users can change the values for the units based on classified intel. By contrast this simulation is being done using the "declassified" version which uses a database of stats provided by the company which designed CMO: The stats themselves are based on some pretty good guesstimates steming from a large variety of sources.
    That is to say, whenever anything happens here it is not because the author of the video decided it so, but rather he is simply inputting the situations and letting the simulation process the outcome.

    As someone who works in the defense industry, I have to say great job. I subbed and hope you continue with the great work. Some comments though.
    1) though I dont have any direct knowledge of the Air to Air missile systems involved beyond what you do, I do disagree with the outcome of the second BVR fight. The f-15 would have a speed advantage when launching partly due to their lighter weapon load and overall speed advantage. This would significantly negate the pl-15 range advantage. On the other hand however, its likely that the aircraft involved would be using the C variant of the AMRAAM not the D version. As far as i know the D is available only in small numbers and has been so far reserved for F-22 squadrons. Overall I agree the scenario may end in favor of the Chinese but not 80:20. 60:40 or even 55:45 seems more plausible to me. As this scenario continues probably using C variants more frequently on the older US fighters and taking into account launch parameters as adjusted by weapon load might improve things
    2) I cant really imagine the US response to a drone shoot down to be to send short range non stealthy f-16 to an area known to be full of advanced SAM systems. Even if conflict was thought unlikely I feel different platforms would be sent. Considering the ranges involved the f-16 would likely not be the first choice. A small number of F-15s or super hornets from a nearby carrier seems more realistic to me. I imagine a QRF would also have been sent to back up the initial wave. I imagine a few F-35 armed for SEAD and further f-15s would stand off a few dozen miles way to come in and suppress enemy sams if things got ugly. After the first clash I think F-35s would have taken some standoff shots at enemy SAM sites before leaving to refuel.

    • @HypOps
      @HypOps  3 роки тому +18

      1) CMO does attempt to account for various factors like launch speed and energy retention and that should work towards the F-15's favor.
      I believe Team Red launches their first volley at around 70nm where the aircraft approaches the no escape zone, not the theoretical 95 max range. Likewise, Team Blue's first volley was closer to 50nm.
      What I meant by 80:20 was that at least one Chinese aircraft came out of the fight 80% of the time (should have clarified that). I agree that I suspect it would be closer IRL, but I report my simulation results even if they didn't go exactly as I expected. I don't intend to fudge the numbers I got, even if they do seem a bit China heavy. (30 simulation runs and the J-16s won 25/30).
      2) I agree the initial situation is a bit contrived. We tried to stick to aircraft with 'similar roles' for this 'encounter scripted' part 1. Notice that we had a 4v4 and then a 8v8 for somewhat 'equivalent' platforms. We will explore newer technologies in future episodes, saving the best stuff for later. The systems you mentioned will all come into play later on where we plan to be less scripted and bigger in scale.

      Well F-35 numbers are short on the region and using them to check out a drone may not be a good idea given the circumstances. For example if it turns out it really is the start of the a conflict, that's a sortie of F-35's burning through fuel that won't be available again for some time.
      Also, J-11/16's move at a similar speed as the F-15's although max speed might be different.

    • @Jester-uh9xg
      @Jester-uh9xg 2 роки тому +10

      The U.S. doesn't have that many AIM-120Ds fielded yet, sure (though it's certainly spread way beyond just Raptor squadrons. I know the Navy's been carrying it on Super Hornets). But China doesn't have many PL-15s yet, either. It's only two or three years old at this point, and we (the public) have no idea whether it's reported ranges are reliable or how many even exist. I would put money on there being way more AIM-120Ds out there than PL-15s.
      The F-15Cs losing to J-16s is highly questionable to me, even if the J-16s have unlimited PL-15s. The range difference between their missiles is not THAT significant, and there are plenty of tactics to diminish that advantage - none of which were used in the simulation for some reason. I do note that the depicted mach 1.6 speed at first volley for both sides is probably unrealistic. The F-15Cs would be more likely at mach 1.4 and the J-16s slower still.
      Taking public numbers for missiles at face value is shaky, though I understand it's all the simulation can really do. The AIM-120D's "official range" is less than 100nm, but there's plenty of reason to believe it's quite a bit longer than that in reality. The USAF said they killed a test target at the longest range in history with it, and the last record I'm aware of is the AIM-54 that killed a test target over 100nm away.
      I agree WRT the F-16s showing up over the Spratlys. Gotta admit I laughed at that. Absurd!

Despite 3 years of intense standoffs we have not gone to war due to a pilot losing their cool and shooting down Chineses aggressors, of witch has happened 6 times now. All parties deny any confrontations have resulted in casualties and we have not gone to war dew to it. Believe it or not this happens a lot , especially Russia they shoot down civilian airliners at an alarming rate and War does not erupt. Next the over estimation of the effectiveness of Su-27 based aircraft and weapons is GROSE! No such aircraft has ever survived combat with a US based fighter EVER! his claim that the F-15 has never shot down a Su-27 is bizarrely wrong about half of the planes shot down by an F-15 in the First Gulf War were Su-27s, plenty of MiG-29s too, embarrassingly high number of maneuver kills. The IFF of all Russian and Chineses planes does not work, they tend to shoot down their own planes thus avoid combined arms tactics. Clark AFB is reopened, Andersen is not our closest base. Malasia has also taken 2 of the bases in the Spratly Islands already with no resistance one with an air base. Independence-class would not operated solo, its too vulnerable thus would be part of a fleet so an Arleigh Burke would defend it. Its all just a bunch of imposable situations that would give advantage to China. His next video has the USS Ronnie RayGun running unsuspectingly into most of the Chinese NAVY with only 3 Arleigh Burke escorts resulting in the loss of all ships.... SERIOUSLY????? what a fucking diluted asshole. He does not understand all the planes, ships and weapons used correctly or how they would be used. He is not a pilot checked out in any of these systems and does not understand actual tactics used like "The Crank" he has no idea just how creative the US forces are. Truth is China wont know what hit them, they would all be dead before they even knew they were in a fight. You should watch the next video it's very entertaining in its absurdity.

Ask any American veteran if they ever thought war is cool ! But that being said I will tell you this. Every weapon the communists Chinese have they’ve either copied or stolen from defense computers of many nations. But regardless of how many communists Chinese fighter pilots the communists Chinese field U.S. fighter pilots will easily sweep communists Chinese fighter pilots out of the skies quickly and easily ! The Communist have two aircraft carriers that will be blown out of the water within the first hour of the war ! As long as the U.S. fight stays kinetic , the U.S. will win easily . But if countries start to use nuclear weapons , well then everyone in our world dies and nobody wins ! It’s just to bad that most people simply do not understand the communists Chinese military Doctrine. That aside, the robust A2/AD capabilities the Chinese have built also worries me. The Chinese learned a lot of lessons watching the US military annihilate the Iraqi military in Desert Shield/Desert Storm. That's very likely why they want systems and munitions that can keep the US at arms length because the Chinese know they can't fight on conventional terms with the US. Great video!

      The problem I see is that we would be fighting on the islands again, but on a much larger scale. Taiwan, Japan, Korea, India, and Australia are all close allies and it is likely the pacific islands in between all of them would be ravaged. All this would do is spur on more war, as the two major powers would be untouched as places like Korea get bombed to shreds. The US would most definitely just be fueled further by this.
      If we fully commit it’s going to end with nukes. If one side capitulates it will mean the end of their society. Americans might vote to sue for peace if it’s about to come to nukes but I’m pretty sure the CCP wouldn’t hesitate.

Why would the US scramble from that far East when they can simply scramble F-22/35s from South Korea or Japan? You have made two mistakes as far as I can tell tactically: (1) you have postulated a lone Carrier with inadequate escort of three vessels, when six are normative, and two Carriers have been deployed previously, being able to sychronize flight deck traffic, or sequence flights to support CAP rotations, and switch missions so that one Carrier can support the other with a fully-loaded mission set, to cover incoming 'winchester' fighters, and launch a screen. Also I would include an Amphibious ship in the escort with F-35's on standby. Moreover, in key 'Q' circles, and Military Officers supportive of CIC/DJT/45, we are at War with China, and the notion that ships entering the Spratleys with both sonar and radar switched off is sheer suicide during wartime. You must learn to think tactically. Try some Old-School boardgames, where the player has to meditate and think things out in 6-minute turns. What you acquire by way of verisimilitude to combat conditions by virtual wargaming you lose in tactical depth and perspective, disconnected from historical lessons. The Japanese learned to their sorrow that emptying the decks of two carriers left them crowded and easy pickings. The DF-12's are a problem, I agree, but six escort vessels, 4 Arleigh Burke's, two Ticonderoga Aegis capable Cruisers(still in use) and the America Amphibious ship can provide the additional air-cover and intercept capabilities. You set up a losing situation which while fought well by the tactical air wings, was bound to lose from the start. I would never send a single Carrier with inadequate escort.
