This is refreshingly honest and I learned one or two new things. It is a good reminder of what I have already learned but I didn't know about that cash window thing!!! Yikes thank you.
The BIGGEST scam is adding tax to your restaurant meal. Tax is included by law so the amount added as tax goes to the server. If you see this have it removed! Also be aware that some places add the tip (propina) to your check.
45 years ago nobody tipped anybody in Mexico and then the Gringos started doing it and all the Mexicans caught on. It is a terrible habit that does not exist in many countries and an insult in Japan.

All I can say: I have been to Mexico in 2008 which was fine, and a really nice vacation. I was back 2 weeks ago - and it was not fine. Scammers everywhere. Prices are as high as they can get (5 dollar for a beer, 10 dollar for rosé wine - 16 dollar for 3 quesidillias - it was crazy. Everyone ther (Playa del Carmen) actually tries to make money out of you, but not in a nice way. Asking 40 dollar for sunglasses (made in china) - 170 dollars! for a simple silver bracelet. Of course you can bargain, but I feel its really the point of view of ppl living there. Someone even told us: you can come on vacation here from Europe for 3000 dollars a week, so you can spend another 1000 dollars on souvenirs, I am just a poor Mexican. Seems like they all think we are millionaire and want to throw our money away on cheap stuff. Authenticity is really gone there. Yo walk through the city and you see Starbucks and Mc Donalds. 15 years ago Playa del Carmen, was a small, nice little city; like it suppose to be. Now its little Las Vegas and a money making machine. We def. never will return - only thing which was amazing, was nature, beaches, good food and drinks in the hotel......Also: smokers beware: You are not allowed to smoke anywhere. Not in the streets of Playa del Carmen, not on a outside terrace or bar, not in the hotel or airport. Even officially: not on the beach. There a very few smoker zones, and they are hostile. There is no way in Mexico to enjoy a cold drink and snack with a cigar (ette) keep that in mind before you book. Even on the balcony of our hotel room it was no smoking area. Its due to a law which has been implemented 2 month ago - and they are quite strict with it
They will also screw you at the pharmacia. Some will short you even though the pill bottle is sealed. Had that happen a few times. I would open up the bottle in front of the pharmacist and make sure the quantities match.
You are correct tours prices are never the same but going with the cheapest option is never a good idea not all tours are the same their are 100s of providers that sell the same tour if you choose to pay less the quality of the tour goes down which ruins the experience never search the price search for people that you trust!
Cops will try to scare you into paying them to be let go for not wearing a helmet even though the company says you don’t have to wear it which could be them working together
Thanks for the tips! Do you know if there is a difference between the cheaper ticket for the Cancun Airport ADO bus in the ADO website vs the one through the Cancun Airport website?
