Tiny tip when using repair kits like this - when blending, wrap the cloth around the squeegee. This will give you a flat surface to blend with, retaining more paint inside the chip. Another tip - fill deep chips with paint directly, and flatten the surface with the back of your fingernail when still tacky. Don’t overdo it if chips are extremely deep, as they’ll never cure properly. In that case, rather apply multiple coats over a couple of days.
Use a credit card behind the cloth and also let the paint dry before removing the high spot. Some paint shop will brush the paint on as light as possible instead of a heavy coat
The easiest solution is to leave the car dirty so neither you nor anyone else notices the chips.
To be really frugal, I have the black tesla. I went to the dollar store and bought a bottle of black finger nail polish. I used a toothpick and placed the smallest drop I could right in the chip. Did nothing else to it. It has a very slight round top to the repair, but if you don't look real hard you would never see it. Total cost $1 and one minute of time.
Maybe white polish might work for you. For $1 give it a try. Experiment where it will not show that much. Mine was on the hood. I am very happy with the results.

I agree. When you first start using Dr. Color Chip, you attempt to get it perfect and keep redoing in an attempt to fill the defect. Later at some point, you decide it’s never going to be perfect, but you realize that from a few feet away it’s not noticeable. Job done!
I've used Dr. Colorchip on my last two BMW's - a 2004 white convertible E46 (which I still own) and my 2011 Deep Sea Blue X5 which I gave to my son when I bought my new 2021 Model Y. Props to the author BUT my experience with DCC is to put the paint product on the index finger of your gloved hand. The goal is is to "mush" the pain into the chip space. Then wait, and use the SealAct finishing fluid to clean off the excess. Might take a couple of tries before you get the feel for how hard to press the paint in, and remove the excess, but put simply, no nail polish-type brushes. Your eye will pick it up immediately whether you're using a paint brush, a cigarette match with the bottom split up or folded out. You just need a finger and a multifiber towel (and the kit) to make it quite undetectable except for you since you'll see it forever.
Ok.. a few things. Very few times will touch paint match your car regardless. I used to make a lot of money in touch painting in a shop because I was very good at seeing the different shades and figuring out how to adjust the new paint to match the old paint. Between differences in batches, how the paint has been treated, sun damage and so on, it's almost impossible to get a "perfect" match. You CAN get the 5 foot match.. ie.. you wont see the repair from 5 feet away. If you very lucky, 2 feet away. I would also modify the application and lose the squeeze. I would put the paint directly into the chip and leave a small "mound". The paint shrinks a bit when it dries. A single edge razor will easily clean up the edges. You will find a small depression still in the ship. Fill that with clear and level it. If you have some above the paint when it's dry, gently slice it with the razor and then lightly polish. The paint being level helps hide the edge which is what stands out to the edge.. that bit of contrast is easily seen. The clear hides that and protects the soft paint under it. Will it be perfect.. nope. A better applicator if you have a lot of chips or deep/bigger chips is a paint pen like Loew-Cornell Fine Line Painting Pen. You fill this with touch up paint then apply. Much better control than a brush or dabber. First of all thank you @Frugal Tesla Guy, your content is easily in top two I go to for Tesla Model 3 content.
I have a pearl white (PPSW) model 3, I took it on a long road trip and noticed some rock chips. I ordered the Tesla paint repair kit and here is my methodology:
(1) Clean & dry car
(2) Apply Tesla paint and let dry
(3) Apply blending solution
(4) Repeat (steps 1 to 3) to satisfaction.
I realize this is time consuming but it's the way I found that works with Tesla paint repair.
This is not my experience with the Tesla kit. I have a pearl white model s and the kit matched perfectly. I shook the paint for a very long time to ensure it was mixed properly and was very careful about not rubbing out the paint. Can only see the repairs with very close inspection with good lighting.
Thanks for the helpful video. I got a touch up kit for the Model 3 MSM and it worked pretty well. Really difficult to get it looking really good though so PPF would probably be a good option

Thank you. I recently bought a used Model S (Deep blue) and it has a lot of pot marks like that on the bumper and hood. I think I will go with Dr. Colorchip to fill it in and then, in a couple of years perhaps repaint. I've been considering a wrap as well but that looks to custom for me.

I think this might be overkill but have you tried 2 coats of Dr colorchip and then Tesla paint? Colorchip might be a good white prime for the silver tint.
I’m glad I watched your video as my tesla paint repair kit in pearl white arrived here yesterday. The scratch is a half an inch long on my bumper from a clients luggage. I’m wondering if I just use the paint directly on the scratch without the squeegee and the binding solution, if I can get it to look right without the visible smears.

Wish I would have seen this before I bought the Tesla brand. Had the same experience. The touch up is darker.
Great video. I use Dr. Colorchip on many cars. It will look better if you do additional coats until the chip filled. Usually 2-3 coats is good.

@@ricksgarage8069 No all brands are slightly different in colour. Toners are made in many countries around the world.
I'd mix the two paints and see if it looked better.
The pearl white is a better match. You need to add coats in order to fill completely. The dr color chip seems to be a quicker fix and the tesla seems you need to add more coats and put some more work in but will end with a better result.
How about the touch up direct kit. PPF is great if you cover your whole hood if I had gotten just the front of the hood it would have been lost money as in 4 years I plan to get the whole car painted.
What’s a person to do? Get Xpel PPF and call it a day. Xpel PPF full front of my Red Model 3, one year and a 1/2 still looks brand new. No paint chips, plus Xpel has self healing properties. If you’re spending good money for a Tesla, protect it right.
With the Tesla touch-up kit, your "filled in" touch-up paint looks like the original chips because when you ran the blending solution over the area you also removed the touch-up paint.
As in all sanding of a filled hole you need to use a solid flat block over the sanding medium - otherwise even light pressure will indent it into the hole and remove the paint. On curved surfaces use a piece of solid plastic foam such as that protecting a TV when boxed.

The reason the Dr CC stays in the chip better is they supplied a solid colour where the other brand supplied a metallic paint. Solid colours are much better I know I've been doing this for years. Smart Repairs
Should’ve made 2-3 coats with Dr Color chip on the first comparison. Just to justify it’s the go to touch up paint than tesla kit. Just to see it covered better chip.
Just got Tesla kit for midnight silver MY today. Hope it matches. I raised my hatch into my garage door. 😞 Two small chips. Have PPF clear bra on front.
Please follow up with how that goes. My msm M3 is parked close to a fence and now has paint missing from the edge of the door.
Model 3 Enthusiast the Tesla kit worked satisfactorily. Color is very good match. What you see is the little divots, due to the shadows which cause the chips to still to be seen, but you have to know where to look to see it. I put on two coats. Maybe a third would hide it more but color seems perfect for msm. Dirty Tesla had an episode where he demonstrated on his blue M3. Re the amount of paint provided. I have enough for a thousand chips I swear.

If I was bothered by every little chip in the bumper or every chip in the metal panels, which I am, I would have every part of my Tesla wrapped! I cannot imagine the time that it would take to fill in every single blemish.
You have to take into account that over time the dr colorchip will fade slightly with exposure to the sun and might more closely match in a few months.
I think PPF is the way to go but probably too late if you've already got a bunch of chips. Thanks for the product comparison. Surprised that Tesla doesn't offer a Pearl White touch up bottle.

I've had an RX350 since 2016 not a single rock chip, traded it in for a tesla not even 5 days I see a huge chip. So far in terms of paint process as someone who owns the top 3 Luxury brands and a Tesla.

I've used the Tesla kit and from experience, you don't need to apply nearly as much paint, making the removal of the excess faster than your trials.
In fact, the goal for me was to create not much more than a haze when smearing with the applicator. That thin! Removing that with the fluid shouldn't take more than a couple of swipes.
FYI, tesla paint kit updated their PPSW formula few weeks ago
I have an issue with my PPSW Pearl White touch up paint from Tesla with my Model 3- it seems to be a grey color and doesn't match the white! I am very disappointed. It even looks more grey than the Dr Colorchip bottle 4:22

I found it best not to use the blending solution depending on the size of the chip.
PPF for the win. I’ll also add that a good PPF shop will go all the way to the edge of the panel so you won’t see the PPF. Oops others beat me to it.
I agree. My current car has had ppf on the front bumper since I bought it and there are 0 chips and you can’t tell there’s a PPF on there. It was around $500 to do that and is well worth it not to have to constantly worry about bugs, chips and other imperfections. It’s been 5 years.
Tried the Tesla touch up kit...Didn’t work very well...A waste of money for me on my 2020 White Model S.....Just wouldn’t replace the rock chip ....
I’ve use Tesla kit paint colour doesn’t match at all it’s more silver then pearl white and now it look stupid as hell. I think the Dr. Colour will get better results and only if this video was post up more early i would’ve got the Dr. Colour kit 😭.
Was it a scratch ? Or just small chips. I have experiece with paint repairs but itll be my first time trying to fix a small scratch on a white pearl mod 3...maybe u applied too much paint ...or who knows
@@gustavocarleon402 The colour doesn’t match the OEM paint for Tesla kit , Dr colour kit will get better results i tried.
Dr. ColorChip seems to have higher solid content.

I went with a clear bra PPF and a 4 layer ceramic coat. The paint still looks fantastic. After seeing the kind of chip damage FTG has, I think it was well worth the $2500
I have a full ceramic coat on my 2019 X. She is only hand washed and still looks like new.
@@bcfran3g844 Ceramic does nothing to protect from chips or scratches. It just makes it more hydrophobic, easier to clean, and shiny af
PPF is well worth it if you want to preserve that first day look. 1K is a very small price to pay if your cars appearance is important to you. If not... that's fine also...it your choice.
You can’t PPF a full PPF on a car for that much though
Tesla uses the Dr. Colorchip system, it's the same product.
Next time just use some whiteout. It costs $1 at the dollar store and you'll get the same results.
Not sure if you've tried that, but FWIW I did have success using a permanent white ink Sharpie (fine point) on a clothes dryer chip. (I know, I'm fussy.)

I didn't try Dr ColorChip but DON'T purchased the Telsa PPSW kit! It is gray color instead of white and it is very thin and does not fill well at all. Wasted 2 hours trying to fill it well but it looked uglier than leaving the chip as is... So I ended up cleaning it completely with the blending solution...

I really think you are rubbing the SealAct to much. It should just go one over the whole area with a very light coating, it just shouldn't be running. Then let it work a little and buff off with microfiber.
Dr color chip needs to get their colors correct. That's real bad diff.
So PPF from 1st day of ownership is the best option :)

You made the mistake of rubbing the chip. It states in the instructions not to rub over the chip, but around it. So you really can't blame the kit if you are doing it wrong.
Tesla touch kit is trash. Just spent 2 days wasting my time and $60. Don’t get it!
