Thanks for this video! I knew I wanted to use Dr. Colorchip, but I really needed a good demo by someone who has used it. I just bought a 2011 Camaro 2SS (black) that only has 36K miles on it - but more than a few rock chips. I feel like I know exactly what to do and expect now. Cheers!
Hey thanks for sharing, how many passes did you need to fill in the chip on the hood? How much pressure did you apply when filling in the chip with paint? and how long did you wait before you used SealAct on the paint? And finally how long did you wait between various applications/passes? Thanks!
Too many people who use these kits only to 1 to 3 coats and then complain. This is the correct way if you want a good result. Time, patience and multiple coats even if ita 6 or 7 times. No quick fix for these
Found your demo to be the most interesting and informative so far, admittedly in part because my car is metallic silver. I haven't yet found one that demonstrated a successful chip repair on a vertical surface. Must ask-did you use the Sealact between each layer you did on that beautiful hood repair? Would've loved seeing the technique used on the front bumper. My hood is sculpted (S550 Mustang) and the chip is on the side of one "spear".
Thank you for the kind words. On the hood we did apply two coats using the sealact in between. After we saw the chip was too deep, we decided to apply 6 coats allowing 15 min to dry between coats. Once level we used the sealact to blend the area. Product takes trial and error but does work great once you apply the appropriate amount of color letter deeper chips more time to dry. I don’t recommend using sealact between coats on deep chips. The smear technique is more for road rash areas where you smear and allow a few minutes before using the sealact
@@ThicGarage , thanks! Luckily, almost no road rash, and the couple tiny ones I have I'll do the smear. For the two bigger ones, I'll take your advice and build up light layers.
QUESTION!! Is the paint they give you water based or oil based solvent? I’ve read you cannot do a good easy touch up with the typical water based paint.
Awesome demonstration on this product. My 2023 Mach 1 has been getting hammered by rocks here in TX (I need PPF!) so I've been trying to patch these spots as they arise. The Ford paint pens are alright, but leveling that paint out with sand paper is nerve-wracking, this method seems way easier. Went ahead and bought myself a kit; excited to see the results in person!
The stuff really is bomb. If you put some paint on your rubber glove finger you can dab like 10 spots before your finger dries. When you go to remove it wrap a credit card in a really thin t-shirt and you won't pull the paint out of the hole.
Right on, thanks for the great advice after 6 layers I can’t even find it and using the squeeze definitely helped. looking forward to use this product on a customer vehicle this weekend, once again thanks for the clear instructions.
nice video. did a great job. Listen two questions? Which kit is the one to buy from Dr Color chip ? Did you let the paint dry before using the other application?
How does this stuff hold up? I see this was posted 3 years ago... any issues with it discoloring, peeling, etc? I doubt it, I see basically nothing but people raving about this stuff online, which is what led me here, but I just can't hell but be skeptical, especially when something sounds too good to be true lol it's just my nature.
For a large and deep paint chip, would you suggest using the squeegee or just applying with a paint brush/finger? A car parked beside me swung their door open and the chip has reached the metal!
Thanks for the tip. I just got the kit and applied the first layer. I'm stumped as to how I can clean the brushes or squeegee? Traditional soap and water don't seem to work.
I'm Definitely Going to Order This Product, I Have Rock Chips On My Car. I Was On The Freeway Today And There Was A Gravel Truck Ahead and it Wasn't Even Covered And There Was Sand and Tiny Rocks Flying Everywhere!!.😥🙄😟
After 1 year and 26,000 miles my car has only 6 rock chips. All very minor. The only ones that concern me are on the metal hood. The ones in the front plastic facia I'm not worried about rusting.
Is there metallic flake in the touch up paint? From what I read on their website it sounds like they purposely exclude flake bc it makes the repair more noticeable. Can you confirm?
I purchased this product, but whenever I used the SealAct, it removes the paint inside the chip too. even If I wait for 5 mins, 10 mins, 1 hr. I also rub it gently. any tips?
Same spot gotta rock chip on my drivers door no clue how middle of the door tiny chip over my passenger wheel well also my cars coated I just don’t want to fck up my coating if I use this
Thanks for the Video! Just one question: Did the paint fully dry in between each coat? Just wondering how the excess is removed so easily at the end? Thanks again!
@@ThicGarage Ahh, good to know! They actually emailed me back & said their paint was a proprietary-blend that only works with their blending-solution, and that dealer-paints wouldn't work with their blender. If that was the case, then you'd have to order a bottle of it from them every time you'd want to do a repair on something different, instead of just buying it local same-day at the dealer or store.
I agree! I never did PPF on a car and while Colorchip works great, it feels more and more painful every time I have to fix a chip. Gonna have to consider PPF, myself.
I purchased a Dr. ColorChip kit on 9-2-20 to repair chips on my Tundra (Barcelona Red). Worked as advertised. Today (9-5-21) I attempted to repair two chips on the passenger door. Shook the paint well as before, used the squeegee, let it dry 5 or 6 minutes until dry to the touch. Rubbed lightly with the SealAct and noticed the paint around the chips was dull and there were a couple of other areas that were dull as well. I buffed the area with the microfiber towel but the dull areas remain. This is a Tundra I have babied since I bought it, kept it detailed. I see no mention of shelf life on the box it came in or in any other literature. I am sick.
@@ThicGarage i let it sit for more that 15 mins, but when I apply the SealAct the pain inside the chips also removes. Am I doing it wrong or should I wait more for the paint to dry?
What should you do if you have a rock chip with looks like a tiny bit of rust coloration at the center that looks like it bleeds into some of the lifted paint?
Depends how big the spot is. If small enough you will want to scrape the center with a thumbtack or little screw driver as we did before applying paint.
@@ThicGarage it is smaller than a pea! My dealership wouldn't do anything about it claiming it was actually a flower dried to the outside of the paint (its a new car) but you can feel a slight dip in the paint running a finger over it. So it's just been annoying dealing with it.
