The MDA Labor Day Telethon was an enchanting yearly variety show that ran for half a century. Hosted for many years by Jerry Lewis, the telethon featured top stars from the world of music, comedy, and Broadway and was like no other show on earth.
The telethon was created to help support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, which is leading the fight against muscular dystrophy. MDA dedicates itself to strength, independence and life. To learn more about MDA and to donate, please visit www.MDA.org.
You can SAY WHAT YOU WANT about his political views but Lewis was SO TALENTED that FEW entertainers in history could MATCH HIM !! He could do just about ANYTHING he put his mind to !
As far as I could research, he never told anyone his political affiliation. And it shouldn't matter. There are good people on both sides.

I remember Jerry in an interview saying he never had any formal dance lessons.

It makes me so mad when people put down Jerry Lewis I personally think this man was a phenomenal multi talented ingenious icon of the world.
He definitely was probably the best of all time. But he also could be very mean to work for and showed much cruelty later in life to his family.

He abandoned his first wife with his four children, not wanting to pay even his livelihood and putting all the debts he had accumulated on her and which HE did not want to pay. But for you Jerry is always the bad one, Dean Martin the good and caring father.

Yes he was. Could not agree more. He was funny, and talented. A unique person who was ahead of his time in comedy. Sadly Jerry was an awful dad and when he died, he cut all his children out of his will except his last wife and the child Jerry had with her.
Jerry was also very temperamental, arrogant and rude at times to people. He allowed his fame to go to his head.
He was not a humble man. but he sure was a funny guy.

He reminds me of my late “ boyfriend “ of almost nine years, except he was from Long Island NY, not Newark. He passed away March 6, 2024 at 76 years old. He was gorgeous when he was in this prime. He could make me laugh with a expression on his face or with the tone of his voice. He is still very much loved 🥰
Jerry is in a class of entertainers that is quite exclusive, and pretty much gone. Say what you will, he is loved by many.
That is why he is the LEGEND.

Every Labor Day weekend when I was a child. Memories. Good man. Raised a lot of money for MDA.

Just the fact that he remakes one of his world greatest film of all time and delighted Eddie Murphy to play it, shows how humble and generous person he is. You'll see no one, absolutely no one in the world has done such a gesture.
It's Labor Day in 2020. We really need this telethon back on television again.
Thanks to you Jerry, he makes some of the most beautiful works in Chile that is the Telethon, his legacy at least in this country will remain one of the most beautiful in the world, thanks for authorizing it

Jerry was so talented and an icon. It’s unfortunate he became so angry and allowed it to become his biggest demon in life.
He was clinically diagnosed as depressive. If I remember well, he had 6 children and one of them was extremely ill (I can't remember what the disease was) and that destroyed Jerry. He changed and became very bitter. His depression was visible in his face after that.
Was this the muscular dystrophy secret?

Not for nothing these Telethons that most Boomers like myself watched for years, really hits you hard as to how time flies. It amazes me now that I just realized that 1989 was almost 30 years ago!! Who on earth was even thinking of 2018 back then?
What a dark and miserable world from what it once was. I long for those days to return..but alas...it is gone forever.

Quick my extremely foolish and stupid friend, make a list of all the people who have said the same of him in the entertainment business, and his personal life, including all of his children all of which he cut out of his will.
Then sit down and message all of them, the ones still alive anyway, and ask them the same question. I hope you have a few days because it is an extremely long list. (If you include names of all the actors, co-producers, directors, business acquaintances who have passed on it would take weeks.)

jerry had a double heart bypass in 1984 so those medications were rough with great mood swings he lived 33 years with these meds and his bypass gave him those extra years but they wernt easy

Bullshit!!! He may have never attended a class, he may have been taught by other people he worked with, but he didn't teach himself. Tap dancing isn't that easy.

Few people ever knew just how talented and versatile this man was. Most just thought of him as the clown he portrayed when he was younger. I have drawn a picture of him taken from a photo of him (maybe from this very telethon) When I show it to friends who like to see my work, very few can identify him. No one seems to have ever seen the serious side of him this pose presented.

I think it's fair to say this was Jerrys show, he knew it, the fans knew it, it was firstly about him and keeping him in the public eye, the charity part was just to a Front for Jerry and his showbiz pals to get screen time.
If they didn't run it then the money raised would be a lot less...thats alone tells us that people would sooner pay to see the entertainers first

yes, he was talented. but very sad he was so cruel to his family - he seemed to suffer from a jekyll and hyde personality, his kids ran and hid when they saw his car pull up and they were cut out of his will, disowned.

Jack Ackerman was my wife's uncle. Jack and my wife's mother were professional tap dancers. My wife's aunt was Mary Jane in the Buster Brown's movies.
