To Be Clear: Beagles are active companions for both children and adults. They are small, compact, and resilient. These dogs are happy and playful, but because they are hounds, they may also be difficult and need patient inventive training methods. They navigate the world with the aid of their noses, and nothing makes them happier than pursuing an interesting scent. Beagles were originally bred to hunt rabbits and hares and people in different countries still use them for this purpose today, although many of them are now living as devoted family pets and companion dogs. In this video, we bring to you a list of 5 things you must never do to your Beagle dog.

My beagle, Dixie , we believe is 9 years old. She was found by friends and given to me after my dachshund died. She had breast cancer and heart worms. My vet has restored her health and I love her very much. She snuggles with me and sleeps a lot. We are buddies. I’m 77 and a widow. When I got her I needed her and she needed me. I love watching Oliver. I learn a lot from watching him.

I adopted my beagle from a shelter about 2 months ago. He is very sweet but extremely stubborn. He doesn't want to go for walks. He is afraid of cars, kids any loud noise. So housebreaking him has become a real chore. But I'm giving him my all!!!

Your dog was in a loud, scarey, strange environment called a shelter. Each dog is different some can take up to 6 months to decompress from that situation. You have only had your dog 2 months. Let your dog learn to trust you and feel safe in your home before you can expect them to be comfortable trying new things like walks in the world with strange new smells and sounds and no one likes loud noises!

I tell my beagle the words for different sounds and things she notices. You see the kitty? You see the doggy? Say hi. You see the big truck? Big truck, get back. When I feed her I have her sit. When I open doors I'll tell her to get back. I'll tell her "good girl" bout 20 times a day. It's amazing how many people at the dog park dont say anything to their dogs except yell their names and random long monologues where the dog has no idea what the owner is saying. Speak to your dog, provide small treats (even his food), you can lead him around the house a little for practice and make sure they are happy experiences. Just make sure he's loved. Everything will work out. Cesar Milan videos are great

Always had large dogs (rottweilers, ridgebacks, shephards, etc)
Thought I would HATE having a small dog, but my daughter wanted a beagle....
I tethered the dog to me for potty training... Now, the darn dog never leaves my side... and I love the thing. Who knew? Great, spunky little dog.
    A slave to her nose....

Beagles are wonderful ❤ I have had beagles my entire life and never had an aggressive beagle - always wonderful companions. Beagles are used in research labs in the US and around the world -- they endure painful experiments and life in a steel cage. Please speak up for Beagles ❤

Please support the Beagle Freedom Project which works to close labs that test on beagles and then re-home the poor dogs once testing is over, as labs will generally euthanize the test dogs after they have been used for a test. Beagles (indeed no living thing) deserves the kind of treatment lab beagles get.

@@daniellekennedy8118 I have a son who is a scientist and it is the one thing we argue the most about. He has never worked with beagles but they have them at labs where he has worked. They use Beagles because they are the most forgiving breed. It is awful what they do to these precious dogs who only show and want love. It makes me want to go and get every single one of them but I can't.

Ben is the first Beagle we own. 2 previous dogs were Jack Rusells, which were characters in themselves. However they did not prepare us for a beagle. Bought as a pup in 2008, he proved himself to be an escape artist. When he was fully grown he would open the back door and let himself out to do his business.
Soon learned by rattling the locked utility room door that the key in the faulty lock would jiggle the lock open.
He can open most doors baring the lounge and den. If by 6:30pm if he is not fed he will out stare you until he is fed. If food is out he will look at it then you indicating "I'll have some if that". Don't mention walk, unless you are prepared to take him out. Of course if the weather is bad you get a look of are you serious I'm not going out in that, but is also capable of "saying" whats wrong it's only rain. After 15 years we wouldn't be without him.

Dolly is our third beagle. They are sweet and kind and each one is different. Wonderful family dogs! If you have a fenced yard you might want to concrete where the fence touches the ground. They love to show friends how to escape. Dolly is a rescue found wandering around a farm. She was skinny and hungry. She was a breeder and probably spent most of her life in a cage. When she cries it is the saddest thing you could ever hear. I can see her doing that and no one ever coming to help her. So, her teats hang down and strangers think she is pregnant or nursing but no, she was a mom to way too many litters. Now she is our baby and after 3 years with us, I can't imagine a life without her.

I rescued a beagle mix from a shelter a few months ago. He certainly loves to sniff and eat. I am training him and it's kind of difficult to get him not to pull on the leash especially on the way down for a walk, jump at elevators, and react to other dogs. He is a sweetie though. Good with people and some dogs. Sometimes I walk him on a long leash so he can explore.

They love everyone and other dogs as well. My first dog, when I was five, 68 years ago was a beagle. Then my brother got a dachshund and we continued to have them over the years even when I was married. After the loss of our last dachshund, we decided to rescue and I decided to try a beagle. My husband and I have been sold on them and in rescuing ever since!!!💗💗💗

My beagle is a sweetheart, rarely barks, loves to snuggle and follows me around while I'm home. Whenever I work on my car she always goes inside expecting a ride. Whenever I sit on the bench she jumps beside me, brushes her head on my side and lean. Gentle and playful with kids, not aggressive to other dogs. Knows some tricks too. As much as I can afford I take her outside to the park to play with other dogs or visit my relatives. Right now I'm training her to walk off-leash around our compound.

We've had 4 beagles in 25 years, two pairs of two. The 3rd one got very sick three years ago and we had to put him down. Now the 4th and last one is 15 and not likely to be with us much longer. He was a BRAT and probably more food obsessed than any of the other three, but he was a very special, lovable boy, and we still miss him. I never thought I would cry so much over a dog.
Their personalities can be very different. One can love to go for walks and get very excited at the word, while the other one goes and hides and then drags his feet.
They are all clown dogs, and absolutely food obsessed. I made a clock once with 8 at all hour positions, and labeled it "Beagle feeding time is 8:00."
They love their blankets, just like little kids (smaller, dog blankets). I'm convinced Charles Schultz had a beagle, but confused Linus for Snoopy. One of our beagles would drag blankets all over the house in his mouth, and then steal blankets from the other beagle. Then he would drag his bed up on the couch, and then all of the blankets he had stolen. They absolutely will get on top of their dog house or anything else about that height, just like Snoopy.
The remaining beagle we have now has always just covered herself with a blanket no matter the time of year, and then she will jump down to go to the kitchen to get for food, and walk all through the house draped in her blanket, and even go outside with it. She chewed holes in every sheet, blanket, bed comforter we had, and my wife's underwear! She's a garbage eater and a poop eater. She had eaten Q-TIPS out of the bathroom trash that got stuck sideways at the other end and had to be removed by the vet. So we have to keep all trash bins up high, or covered and weighted in the bottom so she can't drag them over. She will still sometimes try and shred the edge of the bag hanging out that she can get a bite on. She's getting where she just sleeps most of the time, but she will still get up and run to the kitchen to beg for the smell of any meat cooking. She's always been more lazy about where she drops one, but she's getting worse in her old age, and especially when it's -5 or snow on the ground outside.

My late MIL was a breeder, and these dogs as puppies were gifts to our boys when they were younger. We also have now the toy people that my in-laws adopted from a shelter, and we inherited caring for when they were both gone. We don't know what our next dogs(s) will be other than that we will adopt them from a shelter or the local Humane Society. I missed the opportunity to get my youngest beagle socialized. Not because I didnt want to, but because here in the city there are very few dog parks that are membership only that require a monthly fee to visit. I often have to break the law and let my dogs off the leash in large parks so I can get them to get their exercise, but thankfully people are somewhat understanding of them since they're friendly dogs...that and they usually just stay hidden in bushes looking for squirrels and what not while Im babysitting them. Im getting old and its hard for me to keep up with them, so thats the best way for me to get them to stay in shape, just let them chase rabbits and deer for a few hours every other day.

Like you said, don't forget the training. After she's spayed soon, we plan on dog parks and day care. She's 6 mo now. Love her to death, loves to run in the yard, but she bites when she plays with our other older dog. Peppy is 8. Unfortunately when biting starts, we separate them. I've had several beagles in my lifetime and loved each one tremendously. They fill my heart with happiness. Yes, find a beagle, and keep your eye on them!!

We had an adopted Beagle Maggie who lived to 17 . We were both blessed. The hardship of loosing her was one of the worst pains I’ve ever had to deal with. While I tried to convince myself to wait a year before getting another…..well something just happened and BOING I found a perfect little girl. We have always adopted dogs and we spend loads of money on animal rescues. In fact we helped with that big Beagle rescue of thousands of dogs from lab testing. That simply makes my blood boil. Now it’s been maybe 45 years since I’ve had a puppy. OH BOY! Yep you nailed it. You can’t let a piece of paper hit the floor without her chewing it. Oh boy the joys of puppy teeth . Her breeder was absolutely WONDERFUL! She’s helped us so much. This along with these type videos are helpful to say the least. The breeder named her Roudy Girl. For a reason . We kept Roudy but it’s now Roudy Piper. Pure AKC registered . Parents are simply beautiful with a great temperament . The biggest problem is getting her crate trained as she is SOOO attached to me but we’re slowly making progress. Frozen soup marrow bones are the very best baby sitter. She has a plethora of toys. Big back yard to run free. I walk her everyday and my wife will try to as well. We’ve been able to socialize her and that’s going well. She’s a smart but sassy one. 3 months old now and she’s pretty good at commands of come, sit, stay , paw and roll over. A little help with a few. She knows potty. Fortunately she is HIGHLY treat motivated. All I ever use is freeze dried liver treats. She about jumps out of her skin for them. So many mistakes we made with Maggie but then again she was around 7 when we got her. Abused and we just wanted to spoil her, which we did. We did keep her in good health and regular visits to the vet. Now Roudy doesn’t and never will get table scraps or anything besides her kibble and liver treats. She’s loaded with energy as all are but. She sleeps through the night at least. Thank you for an informative video. Sorry this comment turned into a novel 😂

Hi, I have a rescue beagle who was used in a puppy farm. I acquired her when she was 7 years old and didn't know she was a dog. She was in good condition but had never had love or any sort of attention. Maggie is very gentle full of love and very stubborn. I have taught her many commands and she learns easily (when she feels like it) She loves to play with my Shih Tzu. I found her to be very difficult to train but she now responds to many commands. She is now a very well rounded dog who is very loving with me and I with her.

We have had five beagles. They have each had personalities that are all their own. They agree on one thing. They are smart and bored easily and when they are bored, they get into trouble. At the same time, we have loved each one enormously. Each has lived to 16-17. One let us know she was ready to take over running the household should we ever wish to relinquish control. Another wasn't really a beagle, a golden retriever in disguise as a beagle. We could let her off the leash and she never got very far from us, very unusual for a beagle. Our latest one has the middle name of Diana the Huntress. She has a very strong prey drive and regularly brings dead rabbits and chipmunks into the house through the dog door. Not so nice. But, when she snuggles with me at night, I forgive her for everything. Because of their breeding, they are encouraged make decisions away from the handlers, and they do. They are not retrievers who are bred to come back to you and make you happy. Fortunately, they are quite food motivated so that makes them easier to train. They are basically stubborn and independent-minded and that fits our family persona. We don't have kids, but I will say they all have been great with kids. Not great guard dogs because everyone is instantly their best friend. A great dog or we wouldn't have had five!

We adopted a 6 year old male beagle last fall and he can be quite destructive, to say the least. He had always been an outdoor kennel dog previous to us adopting him. He's adapting pretty well, overall, but he has separation anxiety and destroys his bedding whenever we have to go somewhere and have to crate him. 4 beds so far, at least 10 fleece blankets, and I don't know how many towels! He's also chewed through 2 harnesses. He was bred for field trials, but he's too tall by AKC standards, plus he's gun shy. On the plus side, he's very entertaining and affectionate and we love him to pieces! ❤❤❤

But bc his teeth are STILL coming in he loved biting and his chew toys.
He’s great with other dogs/people the dog hasn’t ever met a steamer period.

I have a going to be a year old beagle great pyrenees in Sept. He's very loving, and yes demands lots of attention. We have set a great routine with him, and when the time of day comes to go out as a family in the backyard with his bro (casper), he let's you know by getting frisky and loud barking. I look at Jordy and say, let's burn off that energy and he's the first at the door. He is truly my best friend. He tries to play with the cats, and they won't have it at times. I'll look at Jordy and say, Jordy, leave your friends alone for now, he'll turn around and walk away. He's very responsive yet has those "stubborn" moments as the video indicates. If his bowl is on the floor, he'll scrape in the floor next to it, right after eating, and we'll pick it up for him to stop that behavior cause that gets annoying. He loves his ball with treats inside, cause he'll use his nose of course to roll it to get the treats out, and it stimulates his drive.
My pup had a seizure in Aug, scared the hell out of us. He's in special care with our vet. Found out his sibs get them as well but with different owners. We're loving Jordy to the fullest, and I truly can't get enough of him. ❤😊 also to mention, a very good hugger. Ive taught him to give hugs by putti g both of my hands out indicating hugs. He'll jump up and put both of his paws around my neck. ❤

They are not stubborn. Yes, they need training as do all dogs, but they are hounds bred to think for themselves in the field. Fit training to the dog.
Indeed, they are foodies, so watch their waistlines. Avoid allowing your Beagle to get fat or too thin. They are great hounds!
My remaining last Beagle is a 5 min foster fail pocket Beagle who cares for himself if he’s sick: decreased his activity so I knew something was wrong: IVDD, crate/prednisone. Fully recovered. He’s a brave, older Beagle.

Our beagle,Linus, lived to be 18 years old. The day he passed away was the same day our new beagle was born. I did not find that out until about a week prior to picking Schroeder up. We have him crate trained and he knows about potty training but he does not like the cold. Once in a while, he’ll poop outside, but he prefers to poop on the puppy pads instead. He is however peeing outside so we’re about 50-50. Today we’re gonna work on the word drop. He is the first pet to bite me. He is a very stubborn dog. Our older dog Sally plays tug and wrestling with him. They go out every two hours, at least until Schroeder is properly potty trained.

I'm a very happy beagle mix dad. My new pup is currently 13 weeks old.
No kidding on having a mind of his own. No matter his temperament he's learning the basics. From play time with the big boys ( larger dogs) he wrestles with his 2 yr old Labrador cousin and Chase's his sister a 2 yr old Strafford shire dog around the back yard. His favorite chew toys are stuffed tigers and squeaky toys he's adapted very well with cats too.
My pup loves car rides and walks too. Going to do my best to be there for my puppy and be a great dad too.
My pup is a real blessing ❤.
Especially since my family took it pretty hard after losing our first dog Snoopy in November of 2023. Snoopy reached the age of 16 years
Our new puppy came to us as a stray our family named him peanut after the charlie Brown characters as a whole. Just like the cartoon. He brings us joy and smiles and his special treats 💩 that leaves us looking like this 😲😳.

    Postulates for a perfect Beagle:
    1. Spoil your beagle rotten. Hugs and smooches are good ways to do this. Ensure that the television is tuned in to their favorite programs. MeTV is a popular station that beagles love. Matlock, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Wagon Train, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Columbo are programs that appeal to a beagle's sensibilities.
    2. Deliver your beagle's meals in a fancy waiter-like manner by holding the dish up high with one hand. Having a cover over their food and lifting the cover in a dramatic fashion is a classy practice that your beagle will love. Elegance in the serving process is vital.
    3. Serve your beagle's meals on the family couch with your beagle's dog bowl on your lap. Sing to them in a melodious voice as they regally dine. Slowly turn the bowl as needed so that the lavish breakfast/dinner you lovingly prepared is easily within their mouth's reach. Beagles like to make mealtime a dignified occurrence.
    4. When you give them snacks, ensure that your Beagle is lounging on the family couch as well. The couch will soon become their personal nest of authority and privilege. The hound will be able to communicate with you in a quiet, intelligent, and understandable level. Your mental paradigms will match due to the love that you and your beagle will share.
    5. Never use a crate. At the end of the day, gently carry your beagle to bed and tell them a story followed by a goodnight snuggle and smooches. If it is your bed that your beagle wishes to slumber, allow your pooch to lay down wherever he or she pleases.
    6. First thing in the morning, give your beagle a belly rub, kiss his/her nose to ensure that it is cold, and say "Good morning my baby beagle". Senior Citizen beagles love being called "my baby beagle".
    7. Lavish your beagle with a variety of stuffed animals so the hound can hold Board of Directors Meetings while you are at work. Remember, your beagle is both the Chairman of the Board and the CEO of your household.
The common theme of all of this (hence, the Mission Statement) is YOUR BEAGLE IS THE ALL-WISE, PAMPERED HEAD OF THE HOUSEHOLD WHO WILL GIVE YOU THE BEST YEARS OF YOUR LIFE!

    I rescued him 8 months

    Crated truck driver
My older dog lab mix at first took to him
    Than
She became aggressive toward him and severely attacked him with injuries
    Required
    Total
    Separation
Poor Joey had been on Trazadone for some time by
    His Vet Doctor
Socialization is impossible as he feels he must be aggressive to be safe.
So his contact with others in neighborhood is zero
    However
When he goes to PetSmart for Grooming Treat
    He is most docile unbelievable
    And
Is so for few days .
I guess it’s because he is out numbered that he doesn’t get aggressive.
At home territory however he loves the Birds Conure and Budgies hmmmm

Works best if you have more than one. Ive had 5, and everybody loves them. Pancreatitis and spine issues are common. Get a copy of Winifred Gibson Strickland's "Expert Obedience for Dogs". There are several editions, I have the first which I find very good.
Also, if you're using a harness, they're absolutely useless for leash training any dog. You need a collar, a slip collar to make them pay attention, and you have to hike the collar up behind the ears sometimes so they get the message that they mustn't pull
And look for a good trainer who can come to your house and work with you and your dog. Costs $ but it's worth it.

We have bonded more, and I think that may have something to do with it or that she is starting to grow up. We have had some intense arguments over biting. I think they will take the role of alpha, if allowed. I've really had to stand my ground with her and let her know that I am the pack leader. Otherwise, she would be sleeping in my bed, and I would be sleeping in her dog bed. She would be eating my dinner, and I would be eating kibble. She's a hard head, but I'm not going to allow her to bully me. I have too much time, love, and money invested. #hardheads

My kids swear she throws our 6 pound chug onto the counter to push food onto the ground. Lol.
    She’s terrible whenever I leave.
Cage her you say?? Then she barks nonstop until the cops (who have my cell number at this point) call me to quiet her. Thank god theyre good dudes who’ve yet to fine me but have cautioned they might have to.
So no cage. My house gets anti beagle mission impossible every time I leave. And god forbid I forget to double check the closet with the trash can.
She pretends to be ashamed but she’s not. She acts like a parent who doles put punishment on a misbehaving child. See??? See what you did??? Maybe next time you’ll think twice before going to buy me food and treats.
