  • Every day three women in the U.S. are murdered by their domestic partners. But after Marissa Alexander fired a single warning shot as her estranged husband threatened to kill her, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Eventually, Alexander survived both domestic violence and imprisonment, and in so doing, brought national attention to the criminalization of survivors. Her message to each of us is clear: Ending the cycle of domestic violence should not mean having to choose between life and death, or freedom and prison. Marissa Alexander is a speaker, success coach, and survivor defendant consultant. Her case remains among the most widely cited examples of the injustice of mandatory minimum laws and the criminalization of domestic violence survivors. Alexander has appeared on CNN and MSNBC and was profiled in The New York Times and Rolling Stone. She is currently writing her first book. Alexander holds a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in business administration. You are amazing. And I can't believe that women are punished for defending themselves. It's too hard.

    • @CaptainBones222
      @CaptainBones222 Рік тому

      No, she was punished because what she did was not self defense. She went out of the house and back into her car which already rips the "self defense" argument to shreds then went back in and deliberately shot and missed her husband which was near her children. She is not a "martyr"

  • @NobodyHasToAgreeAllTheTime

    She should have done the 20 years.
    She was the primary aggressor thru that entire situation, including coming to that house when they were separated and there was a restraining order, leaving the house to go to the garage and then coming back to let off a “warning shot”
    I think it’s in poor taste that she used Trayvon Martins passing as a smokescreen to try to escape accountability as well.

    • @HeyAesha

      It’s public record. His deposition is available online. If you truly wanted to know you could find the answer because it simply requires a 2 second Google search. He admits to starting the altercation over texts that he didn’t like. He admits to being violent.
      20 years for firing a weapon and not hurting anyone with no priors is still ridiculous anyway you slice it. Mandatory minimums are ridiculous in most cases.

    • @HeyAesha
      @HeyAesha 5 років тому +6

      DB Stevens My comment wasn’t addressed towards you. Also, you brought up “who started it” when you claimed that she provoked the incident. This is my last time responding to this thread. All I simply said was anyone who truly wanted to hear about the details of the incident could read the depositions online and not make disparaging comments on her Ted Talk comments. I also said mandatory minimums are ridiculous. You are reaching.
      Also, people like me? You don’t know me sir. But what’s good for the goose is good good for the gander- so since we are making assumptions. You must be Rico Grey or a family member. The way that you have tried so hard to respond to all of the comments on this video seems personal. I would hope so with all the energy you are putting into this. You aren’t an authority on anything sir, Goodbye...
