"From wishes to eternity" was released in 2001, it is Nightwish's first DVD. This entire DVD is iconic. The band started in 1996 and when they recorded this dvd they already had 3 studio albums: Angels fall first (1997), Oceanborn (1998) and Wishmaster (2000).

Hello Jen 🙂just a little info here. This is a cover song by Nightwish. This song is from an animated film from 1982 called: The Snowman.
Tuomas made a cover of it in 1998 and it was included on the Oceanborn album, the 2nd studio album of Nightwish..
I`m glad you are starting to dive into the Tarja stuff too. She is a fantastic singer and she is the original sound of NW and her voice is the reason Nightwish became a symphonic metal band.

nightwish have so lucky with they singers,3 difference style singers and all awesome. nightwish also make very cover they made so high quality. in my books this cover go number 1 even high hopes is also amazing and of course phantom of the opera. i never see tarja live, last time i have change to see them finland,i was traveling thailand :( well then i see anette and floor one time live. you was right that emotions come whole nightwish performance not only singers. thanx to phantom and this reaction and have great weekend there.

Floor is my fav but man Tarja is magnificent too!! Youre right...Nightwish is greater than the sum of its parts. Seperately they are world class but together they make something altogether different and incredible!!

This song is from a Christmas story. When Tuomas heard this for the first he thought it was the most beautiful melody in the world, he was about 9 - 10 years and this song actually got him inspired to start writing music. Storytime is his own version of Snowman, if they ever would make a sequel to the story, which they did. You can find it in an interview with Tuomas.
He would have been 6 by Christmas 1982. Tuomas was born in December 1976 9 months after myself. 6 months before Tarja. So he is 24 and she was 23 when they did this concert.

Dear Jen, I don't know if you have reacted to Swanheart, which is a hidden gem in the Nightwish catalogue. I would react to the live version with the band (twenty years back). First read the lyrics and then ... let the tears fall.

Toumas was pretty emotional during the Tarja exit. He about breaks down at the beginning of Ever Dream during the End of an Era concert. It's rumored he wrote it about her. Who knows, though.
Toumas did write and open letter kicking Tarja out of the band is was all over the internet during that time.. Tarja has talked about somewhat of his topic .. although it's years later and I believe ( I think) peace was made!
Yes Diana, things went sour. But Tuomas wrote many songs about Tarja and his feelings. Even the first Anette's album of the 6 first songs 5 are about Tarja or the break up. Which is why the album is Dark Passion Play, because the storm of it all fueled him.
THE SNOWMAN was a very big Xmas TV staple in Europe and the UK.
You're right it's not just Floor, they have it also with poppy voice Anette. It's the Nightwish Magic!
Troy wasn't recorded on a Nightwish album until 2007's "Dark Passion Play," the first album featuring Anette. Oh geez, that was 14 years ago now! I'm so old.

You are so right...it's the WHOLE BAND, the genius of Tuomas, and the concept behind their music that does it!!!! They've never had anything even close to a bad lead singer - all 3 ladies have made me cry. But it's the band's artistry together where the *real magic* lies!

The whole situation with Tarja is still a sore spot for many. We can only celebrate what we have with Nightwish and Floor now and Tarja with her own band.

Be happy and prepare to experience the best and most magical concert from that CD. It was done in 2000...young and genuine NW (humble and modest as always). At this time they were : Tuomas, Emppu, Tarja (the founding members), Jukka and Sami. Tapio and Tony did some male vocals in this magical concert. This is actually a kind of a cover of original Flying Snowman which Tuomas tuned for NW style (his favorite tune). Check the videos from year 1993...1994...and see real babies on stage ; ) ... You are righ in the late comments...Tuomas says that NW is a state of mind ...and that tells much. You also understand what happened and finally reasons why "Poet and Pendulum" came...they were school friends already and from small village and experienced the whole way from early simple covers and rehearsals to mega NW concerts globally. That deep and vital growing process happened pretty much with this group on stage (and Marco).
Yeah, my favorite concert recording. I have the DVD too (cheers from Finland). There's now also remastered versions of some of these songs, like Swanheart for example, and it rises a few more steps more awesome with that quality.
Walking in the Air is a song that one can sing beautiful with soft vocals too. Tarja sounds more like an angel from heaven with that clear voice. There is one recording Anette singing it with soft voice, and that's so cute. Recorded by audience so the quality is bad,.

Honestly, this has to be the best rendition of this song ever. Just a little better than André Rieu's version.

One big part of the genious Toumas is, that he is able to write songs perfectly adressed to a singer. All the early songs are written to fit Tarja. Songs of that time, that are now sungen by Floor are often have another key to better fit Floors powerfull lower voice range. I just can't wait what he is doning about Marco. This could be another great beginning with the songs of a master.
I started hearing Nightwish back in 2003. There are only a few days since, I not have heard a single song of them. Symphonic Metal is so beautyful!
And BTW it is so awesome that it still can touch people like you ♥ I like your videos a lot! Because it is so nice to watch an other person as she hears it the frist time.
Now you are starting to understand why Nightwish fans are so passionate about Tarja, 16 years later, End of a era and Poet and the Pendulum, I also think this is part of the reason Annette had such a hard time filling her shoes and being accepted by the fan base. In a lot of ways it is a DIVORCE and it hurts. I suggest Over hills and far away with Tarja....
I'm one of those who essentially skipped on Nightwish during the 'Annette era'. While there is a lot more to the music of Nightwish than just the lead vocals, for many years Tarja's voice was such a huge ingredient of what defined Nightwish. I'm really glad I saw them live during Once Upon a Tour in Berlin in 2004, not that long before the End of an Era.
It would be easy to say I didn't like Annette's voice, but it would also be wrong. It is not the iconic and instantly recognizable voice Tarja has, but within her genre she is quite good. Still, for me the thing which made Nightwish unique was gone, and the blame for that unconsciously landed on Annette, who of course carries absolutely no blame for that at all.
And that became clear when Floor joined Nightwish. I had heard Floor sing while she was still quite young, and she had left an impression with me. Despite that, I still had to step over this 'but it is not Tarja' thing, that only happened when I heard Floor perform Ghost Love Score with her own little twist to the end of it. No, its not Tarja, but man, this just works.
One thing which did not really help at the time was that Nightwish and Tarja had already agreed to split up and go their own way before the public drama happened, just not in that way. So with hindsight, this was the result of poor handling of the situation by the band more than anything.

Walking in the air is one of my favorites with Tarja, even though it's not that Metal :-) Her voice is just perfect for that song. It's a coversong for an adventure cartoon that Tuomas likes :-)

Every Christmas my family has to see the animation movie "Snowman" where this is from. My better half has seen it in every year since the movie was shown first time in TV. When Nightwish made this cover, it was first time she wanted to borrow my Nightwish CD:s. What do you think rest of this live-CD? Now it's too late to ask reaction to "Swanheart", but isn't it quite nice ballad also? But hey, please react to "The Riddler" Again one great song from the Oceanborn.
I wasn't around when Annette left and Floor joined, so did experience that difficulty, but look at how well that turned out. So now here we go again, with Marco. While CLEARLY his shoes are huge, to say the least, it's seeming like maybe, just *maybe* we're in for something very special. Tuomas & Co tend to do that. Great job, Jen! 🤘

Nightwish has been the band that gotten me through two awful breakups, one of which was a very recent divorce.
I also often cry when I listen to some songs, the sheer volume of emotions their music gives me is just overwhelming and no other band offers me that.
I have been lucky enough to see Nightwish with Tarje 3 times before they let her go. I also have seen Tarja's solo performance once.
I can't tell you how many times I have listened and watched From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era but it's a lot.
After NW brought on Anette I gave up on NW because I felt they're abounding the sound that I loved
I didn't think Anette's sound was the right fit for the band and it wasn't fair to Anette either. The songs didn't sound the way they used to (which was the way I loved them to sound).
So I stop listening to them from 2006 and forward.
A couple of years ago I then through UA-camr reactions started to listen to NW again now with Floor at the front.
It is not the same sound as with Tarja (and this pains me to admit) but I think that Floor is a better fit with the band than Tarja.
Her stage presence and versatility are just what the band needed and was looking for.
That being said, most songs from Angels fall first until Century Child I prefer Tarja's sound/voice but there are exceptions.
GLS and Romanticide being two of them.
I still support Tarja's solo career, her latest album is great but her songwriting is not on Tuomas level.
The first three albums will always be the epitome of what Nightwish sound represent for me, sorry for the rant.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but this is from 2001, so this not only predates Floor, but also Anette (obviously), Troy, and Marko. Marko's first album with Nightwish was Century Child, which came out in 2002. I can't remember if Troy was on as an extra then or on 2004's Once, but he definitely was for Dark Passion Play, which was 2006.
Regardless, Sami is who is playing bass here, and Jukka is back on drums, so this is really early on.. 4-5 years after they formed.
You know.. what I would actually suggest doing is around Christmas time this year, do a reaction with the family to the entire movie The Snowman. Not only will the kids get a kick out of it, but you will as well, and see why Tuomas decided to cover it.
