This live recording is from Helsinki, Finland in 2005, then together with Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya], the 1st female singer of the band, and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer. This was also Tarja's last concert of the band, she was fired immediately after the show publicly. with an open letter - bitter-sweet memories.. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). So I saw somebody reacting to this who has worked on Phantom who explained that the part you worry about the singers being able to hit each time is prerecorded and mimed. Tarja did it live more than once. So does Floor. Absolutely stunning.
Well now I know 😂 but I get the same watching the olympics in case they fall or fluff it. I feel second hand anxiety for everyone lol. Maybe I need a chill pill 😅
Just this year Nightwish played this song for the first time in 17 years. The singers were Floor and Henk Poort the originator of the phantom in the Netherlands.
You know that actually those Broadway singers won't do that ending at live, they just lip sync. It would be too stressful to do this night after night. But our metal Goddesses do (Tarja and Floor). They "only" hit D6 thou, but for me that is high enough.
I’ve only seen phantom in London and they’re usually live all the way, but I’ve so far never been blown away by any Christine I’ve seen in person. However I feel Tarja or Floor would knock my socks off lol 💨🧦
I think Tarja actually goes from D6 to E b 6 with the vibrato in this version, so almost there 😅 and there's one recording from a concert in Madrid where she hit E6! 🙏🏽❣
Late to comment on this but it was a miracle Tarja even made it on stage this night since she got the flu the day before. She was not at the top of her capacity and she still pulled off a hell of an effort!
The "J" in Tarja has a "Y" sound. Think of it as rhyming with "curry yeah" I love seeing people appreciate what Tarja originally brought to the vocal table for Nightwish.
@@themetalmuse For this song Tarja is wearing yellow and the production design/lighting is bluish-purple, and this mimics the color scheme of the 1991 Disney animated film Beauty and the Beast. That movie of course uses the same character dynamic as Phantom of the Opera. On the DVD you'll notice Tarja leaves the stage after Phantom of the Opera for a wardrobe change. The next song in the set is "The Siren"; another song featuring both Tarja and Marko on the vocals, but with the character dynamics switched. In Phantom of the Opera Tarja plays the innocent Christine and Marko plays the menacing Phantom. In The Siren, Tarja plays the role of the sinister siren and Marko plays the role of the sailor drawn in by the irresistible allure of the Siren. For this song Tarja's costume is black. Later in the show Tarja also wears Red and White, this is usually in line with the lyrical themes or tone of the songs. (e.g. love, heartache, innocence, serenity, etc.)
You should react to the 2019 Beste Zangers duo with Floor Jansen and Henk Poort(Andrew Lloyd Webber's favorite Phantom). Henk also performed with Nightwish, on stage with Floor, singing Phantom. Lots to see. Lots to catch up on.

I don't have another "Phantom" performance to suggest, but since you mentioned how Tarja's voice is such a woman's voice - you _might_ want to listen to the cover of Rammstein's "Seemann" by Apocalyptica, with Nina Hagen singing _insanely_ deep for a woman _while still sounding feminine._ Usually, when you get contralto singers, they don't really sound femine anymore, and Nina sings even deeper than that range... 😊
Ta (rolled r) ya - Floor sang with Henk Poort with Nightwish. Henk was the Phantom in the Netherlands stage production. They became friends during Beste Zangers and sang a version of PotO there as well.
At the end of the day, it's not a competition... But fuck it, I'll say it right here, right now, zero regrets, as an unpopular opinion - Floor's got nothing on Tarja. This was in Helsinki, Finland. 2005. I was 18 then, just graduated high school & I was there as a graduation gift for October! I'm 37 now. Beautiful venue. Beautiful country! Loved it Metal Muse. Floor has done a couple of performances of this song with the opera singer Henk Poort, the Dutch productions Phantom of the Opera. One from a Dutch TV show Called "Beste Zangers", and one from last year with Nightwish in Amsterdam.
Why is it that half the comments here are pointing the reactor towards another (inferior) version of this song by a duo one half of which isn' t even Nightwish? Why not comment positively on this one? Floor obsession.
Sorry to say, but everytime you have been to Tge Phantom of the Opera play, Christine's pat has always been prerecorded. It's never actually done live because of the same fear that you have, and not wanting the actress to hurt herself because of the many performances she has to do.
Ahh this was a really sweet reaction, thank you for sharing! :) Glad you enjoyed it, it's such an iconic interpretation of Phantom of the Opera. Nightwish, especially in the beginning when they were all in their early 20s, really combined the best of opera and metal. Tarja started her classical training I believe when she was around 16 years old and she is immensely talented and has such a beautiful and special colour to her voice and Tuomas really knew how to write songs around her voice! :) Keep exploring Nightwish, with all three singers, it's so worth it!!
Hey Muse! One thing I saw one male opera singer say about Marko' vocals actually giving a more legitimate feel to the Phantom, is that the character is actually a killer, so Marco's interpretation and vocals do give him a more unhinged and dangerous individual vibe. I actually prefer this over the original because the mixing was not that great, plus the instrumentals that Tuomas came up with gave this song much more mystery. Specially him holding that note in the beginning before going with the chromatic bombastic from the original. And let's be honest, this song does have a feel of a metal opera much more than a musical in my opinion as a trained musician myself. Btw, I see your Instagram page doesn't work. Do you have another?

Beste Zangers unfortunately had some post processing going on, and everyone performed flawlessly, every time. With that said, Floor would have actually sounded better without that processing, because it made everyone sound a bit too unnatural for me.
@@themetalmuse yes, there is obviously some kind of pitch correction done in post processing, because all the singers hit all notes 100% perfectly all the time. There are just no such singers in this world. Even the best have some variation. There is actually one video, where one guy (Wings of Pegasus) analyzed Floor Jansen singing "Ghost Love Score" (live at Wacken...with Nightwish of course), and he was blown away how good she actually is. He was also convinced that there was no autotune used.
Beautiful reaction! That is far and away my favorite performance of Phantom of the Opera. I don't think I'll ever need another. That version has the grit and metal quality, and power of voice from Christina, that I always felt the Broadway version sort of wanted. To me it's perfect. I only wish they had done it all. Tarja's voice for that was amazing, but let's not forget Marko too! This is the first I found your channel. I see it is metal focused. You might enjoy checking out some more Nightwish (my favorites are mostly with Floor, their third singer), some from Tarja and some from Floor. The Wacken 2013 performance having many great ones. Gabriel will have left a list with links, so I won't repeat that. However, since you're all about metal, I highly, highly recommend checking out Lovebites - my favorite metal band. They might surprise you. There are many flavors of metal. Theirs are power, thrash, and speed, maybe throw in a little progressive and some classical influences. Very clean voice, positive lyrics, wearing all white to show metal can be a positive thing, but they go hard. Really hard. Very technical and brilliant. Asami has some R&B background though, and Miyako is a full-fledged classical pianist, so they have more variety than one song can really show. I think I'd recommend the staple first listening song, Holy War, but I recommend others, too, if you want harder, thrashier, more classical etc. ua-cam.com/video/bgAxpEpEcno/v-deo.html

I reacted to her too. I feel like she's one era and Floor is another. She's the OG but bands evolve, so does their lineup and so does their sound. However, I understand the contention because of how they all parted ways. However, I saw she and Marko reunited. So I hope that means they've buried the hatchet.

Nothing against these ladys, love them all, but where is Sharon den Adel ? She is at least part of the dutch trinity, and was maybe part of the overall trinity before Floor joined Nightwish. Ok, she is not classical trained, aber that makes here maybe even more amazing.

But still this version from End of Era concert, and IMHO Marko is the best Phantom ever)

The voice usually used for Christine is more innocent and girl like. But this works so well with all the drama in this song. I saw them performing live a while before this was recorded, it is intense, magic and just amazing.
4:30 It is her tone. Tarja has extremely dark tone to her head voice which is rare, giving even her high notes very pleasant and soft sound. Most classically trained singers I have heard sing this song have a very bright tone (Floor included) which can sound more angelic/innocent/fragile, but when going full throttle and to the highest notes can get rather uncomfortable and change from pleasant to painful if kept up. This can also fool some people into thinking she is singing at a much lower register than she actually is This is why most singers only visit those higher areas only temporarily, even if the technique would be healthy, since if most of the song is sung at those registers with a bright tone, it doesn't sound that great and can sound quite monotone. This is one reason Floor isn't even trying to sing early (first 3 albums) Nightwish as Tarja sang them, since she has a very bright tone, and it would not sound pleasant. Instead, she is singing them with chest/mixed chest (which is actually insanely difficult and draining in comparison) and only temporarily goes full head voice for those highest notes. This allows her to keep the "mood/tone" of those songs, even with her "unmatching" tone, to Tarja's, whose rarer vocal qualities those songs were made for. However, those songs do lose the effortless/ethereal quality, and given a more violent/rock quality and are much much much more difficult to perform live

I would actually like to hear your thoughts of Tarja singing a classical piece, Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti. It was recorded in Lakeuden Risti church with no tricks used, only her with the musicians playing without any audience. It really let`s her classical training shine and shows just how much she had to adjust her vocals to make it work with a symphonic metal band. She is a lyrical soprano and her take on Mein Herr Marquiz shows her brighter tone very well. With Nightwish she mostly sung more as a dark pinto soprano.

Nightwish just released a live perofrmance of this with their current singer Floor Jansen and the man who played the phantom in the musical in the Netherlands Henk Poort, different vocals but just as interesting.

Tarja has a killer solo career. Other NW/Tarja favorites are walking in the air, the siren. I believe it was after this concert, the band kicked her out.

There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

So I saw somebody reacting to this who has worked on Phantom who explained that the part you worry about the singers being able to hit each time is prerecorded and mimed. Tarja did it live more than once. So does Floor. Absolutely stunning.

You know that actually those Broadway singers won't do that ending at live, they just lip sync. It would be too stressful to do this night after night. But our metal Goddesses do (Tarja and Floor). They "only" hit D6 thou, but for me that is high enough.
I’ve only seen phantom in London and they’re usually live all the way, but I’ve so far never been blown away by any Christine I’ve seen in person. However I feel Tarja or Floor would knock my socks off lol 💨🧦
I think Tarja actually goes from D6 to E b 6 with the vibrato in this version, so almost there 😅 and there's one recording from a concert in Madrid where she hit E6! 🙏🏽❣
Late to comment on this but it was a miracle Tarja even made it on stage this night since she got the flu the day before. She was not at the top of her capacity and she still pulled off a hell of an effort!

That movie of course uses the same character dynamic as Phantom of the Opera. On the DVD you'll notice Tarja leaves the stage after Phantom of the Opera for a wardrobe change. The next song in the set is "The Siren"; another song featuring both Tarja and Marko on the vocals, but with the character dynamics switched. In Phantom of the Opera Tarja plays the innocent Christine and Marko plays the menacing Phantom. In The Siren, Tarja plays the role of the sinister siren and Marko plays the role of the sailor drawn in by the irresistible allure of the Siren. For this song Tarja's costume is black.
Later in the show Tarja also wears Red and White, this is usually in line with the lyrical themes or tone of the songs. (e.g. love, heartache, innocence, serenity, etc.)

I don't have another "Phantom" performance to suggest, but since you mentioned how Tarja's voice is such a woman's voice - you _might_ want to listen to the cover of Rammstein's "Seemann" by Apocalyptica, with Nina Hagen singing _insanely_ deep for a woman _while still sounding feminine._ Usually, when you get contralto singers, they don't really sound femine anymore, and Nina sings even deeper than that range... 😊

Sorry to say, but everytime you have been to Tge Phantom of the Opera play, Christine's pat has always been prerecorded. It's never actually done live because of the same fear that you have, and not wanting the actress to hurt herself because of the many performances she has to do.

Ahh this was a really sweet reaction, thank you for sharing! :) Glad you enjoyed it, it's such an iconic interpretation of Phantom of the Opera. Nightwish, especially in the beginning when they were all in their early 20s, really combined the best of opera and metal. Tarja started her classical training I believe when she was around 16 years old and she is immensely talented and has such a beautiful and special colour to her voice and Tuomas really knew how to write songs around her voice! :)

Hey Muse! One thing I saw one male opera singer say about Marko' vocals actually giving a more legitimate feel to the Phantom, is that the character is actually a killer, so Marco's interpretation and vocals do give him a more unhinged and dangerous individual vibe. I actually prefer this over the original because the mixing was not that great, plus the instrumentals that Tuomas came up with gave this song much more mystery. Specially him holding that note in the beginning before going with the chromatic bombastic from the original.
And let's be honest, this song does have a feel of a metal opera much more than a musical in my opinion as a trained musician myself.

Beste Zangers unfortunately had some post processing going on, and everyone performed flawlessly, every time. With that said, Floor would have actually sounded better without that processing, because it made everyone sound a bit too unnatural for me.

@@themetalmuse yes, there is obviously some kind of pitch correction done in post processing, because all the singers hit all notes 100% perfectly all the time. There are just no such singers in this world. Even the best have some variation.
There is actually one video, where one guy (Wings of Pegasus) analyzed Floor Jansen singing "Ghost Love Score" (live at Wacken...with Nightwish of course), and he was blown away how good she actually is. He was also convinced that there was no autotune used.

Beautiful reaction! That is far and away my favorite performance of Phantom of the Opera. I don't think I'll ever need another. That version has the grit and metal quality, and power of voice from Christina, that I always felt the Broadway version sort of wanted. To me it's perfect. I only wish they had done it all. Tarja's voice for that was amazing, but let's not forget Marko too!
This is the first I found your channel. I see it is metal focused. You might enjoy checking out some more Nightwish (my favorites are mostly with Floor, their third singer), some from Tarja and some from Floor. The Wacken 2013 performance having many great ones. Gabriel will have left a list with links, so I won't repeat that.
However, since you're all about metal, I highly, highly recommend checking out Lovebites - my favorite metal band. They might surprise you. There are many flavors of metal. Theirs are power, thrash, and speed, maybe throw in a little progressive and some classical influences. Very clean voice, positive lyrics, wearing all white to show metal can be a positive thing, but they go hard. Really hard. Very technical and brilliant. Asami has some R&B background though, and Miyako is a full-fledged classical pianist, so they have more variety than one song can really show. I think I'd recommend the staple first listening song, Holy War, but I recommend others, too, if you want harder, thrashier, more classical etc. ua-cam.com/video/bgAxpEpEcno/v-deo.html

I recomend the new Crewish version Tarja did with them. The End of an Era concert starts with Dark Chest and ends with I wish I had an Angel. An aside but this show has 4 acts and Tarja has 6 outfits over the night. It was called ONCE upon a dream at the time. Before the decision to let her go. They knew. She didn't. Only found out the next morning. After the letter was leaked online.
Anyways Crewish are the stage crew and production crew for the band. They do covers. Including NW covers. They did Sleeping Sun with Tarja when she was in the band. They did a video for their 2nd album and what a play on words. The Album is called Twice! The 2004 album for NW this tour was supporting, #5 was called Once. And that both singers who did the original Tarja & guest Tapio Wilska reprise their vocals. But with a twist. It was a project to help the crew who could not work due to lockdowns. Nice way to help them and produce content.
Anyway more good news. One night only July 08 in Switzerland Tarja will have.a guest star. Their 3rd time since 2005 but first since Marko left NW in 2021. How awesome that these good friends will reunite on stage again. Oh BTW yes both Taa-rr-ee-aa and Marko have classical training. Protected their voices. Tarja is 45 and Marko is 55/6.
You can explore her solo career and see she has not lost a step. She was always innovative and it has not changed.
Fact about Tarja b4 I had seen proffesionals do reactions I did not have words either.
She is a mezzo soprano. Low chest voice with power and yes can reach those high notes. " A mezzo sporano is still a soprano" says Charlie Collata proffesiinal high tenor opera singer. He should know.
Her range is 3.5 Octaves.
Her singles career holds some great concerts.
Including two from woodstock Poland ( name changed probally due to © claim) A cover of Supremacy by Muse and her own song Victim of Ritual. You get to see her really cut loose. She was born to perform and those are great examples.

As for the 3 eras. The band changed from their earliest days to after 02 when Tarja had finished her schooling and had better equipment. In ear monitor means you can hear yourself singing over the band. She changed how she sung.
Now each singer is unique and brought something diffetent. So to do they all evolve. And equipment improves. Also saying singer A at 28 is not the same as singer B at 40 is pointless.
I hope you enjoy the journey. And know there is no right and wrong version. Just what works for you.
One note when Floor agreed to join Nightwish she flat out said she will never sing Bye Bye Beautiful. 1st track w Anette after Tarja was gone. It is a mean spirited attack on her friend Tarja and Floor went to her to get the blessing to join the band.
Now that is class and friendship.
Not that she had to but she extended the courtesy.
They have been on stage together once in The Netherlands about 5 to 10 years ago. They did a Nightwish staple. A cover of Gary Moore's ( R.I.P.) Over the Hills and Far away. Recorded by a fan and audio quality not the best also each lady asked the mixing desk to lower her own mic.😅
They did an Instagram live in 2020 as well.
If you chose to skip that in the future I understand. Lets say they handled things about as badly as possible short only use of threats or worse.
Much hard feelings and hurt you get on both sides in music from the period.
Marko and Tarja are good friends again. And for the rest, cool but civil is what I heard.

4:30 It is her tone. Tarja has extremely dark tone to her head voice which is rare, giving even her high notes very pleasant and soft sound. Most classically trained singers I have heard sing this song have a very bright tone (Floor included) which can sound more angelic/innocent/fragile, but when going full throttle and to the highest notes can get rather uncomfortable and change from pleasant to painful if kept up. This can also fool some people into thinking she is singing at a much lower register than she actually is
This is why most singers only visit those higher areas only temporarily, even if the technique would be healthy, since if most of the song is sung at those registers with a bright tone, it doesn't sound that great and can sound quite monotone.
This is one reason Floor isn't even trying to sing early (first 3 albums) Nightwish as Tarja sang them, since she has a very bright tone, and it would not sound pleasant. Instead, she is singing them with chest/mixed chest (which is actually insanely difficult and draining in comparison) and only temporarily goes full head voice for those highest notes. This allows her to keep the "mood/tone" of those songs, even with her "unmatching" tone, to Tarja's, whose rarer vocal qualities those songs were made for. However, those songs do lose the effortless/ethereal quality, and given a more violent/rock quality and are much much much more difficult to perform live

Faites le festival Open Air du Wacken 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe. Essayez une petite histoire comme storytimes, si vous voulez du plus lourd essayez Romanticide ou de commencer plus doucement comme dit Floor avec Ever Dream toujours au Wacken 2013 qui commence comme une douce ballade et finit sur un signe de Marko comme un train lancé a grande vitesse...... Et je pense que notre ami Gabriel devait arriver sous peu, cliquez sur son nom et allez sur communauté, vous pourrez suivre sa liste en toute confiance avec les meilleurs mixages à la bonne vitesse et avec le meilleur audio. I would actually like to hear your thoughts of Tarja singing a classical piece, Ave Maria by Paolo Tosti. It was recorded in Lakeuden Risti church with no tricks used, only her with the musicians playing without any audience. It really let`s her classical training shine and shows just how much she had to adjust her vocals to make it work with a symphonic metal band.
She is a lyrical soprano and her take on Mein Herr Marquiz shows her brighter tone very well. With Nightwish she mostly sung more as a dark pinto soprano.

There`s something in the tone of her voice that is just so beautiful and the quality she brings is amazing. You really hear the talent, the dedication and hard work she has put in.

Floor Jansen, the current singer of Nightwish did a great performance of this song with Henk Poort who played Eric in the Dutch version of Phantom Of The Opera, but that isn't the best version out there

Nightwish just released a live perofrmance of this with their current singer Floor Jansen and the man who played the phantom in the musical in the Netherlands Henk Poort, different vocals but just as interesting.

Tarja has a killer solo career. Other NW/Tarja favorites are walking in the air, the siren. I believe it was after this concert, the band kicked her out.

Every time I hear this version it just gets better and better tarja has the vocals of a goddess and Marco is my image of the phantom went to the London show on stage many years ago just a interesting fact when Lloyd webber 1st recorded this it was with Sarah Brightman and Steve harley was the phantom but for the show it was Crawford
