- Working on a new series! I'll be reacting to The Way of Kings in a series of videos. THERE ARE SPOILERS. It's the only way for me to get through this book. So apologies if you plan on reading it. But idk, sometimes spoilers can be helpful if you're on the fence. Otherwise if you're like "I'm not touching that book!" then this is perfect for you lol. You get all the tea without having to read it :)

This is my favorite series by a mile. Hope you enjoy it!
Thanks for watching! That’s awesome it’s your favorite series. Mine is The Magicians Trilogy. Excited to see how I enjoy this one ☺️
@@AlyLourim I’m about to finish Farseer and am looking for a new trilogy - can you tell me the author of the magician trilogy please so I can look into
@@warbrothers7745 OMG YES! It’s Lev Grossman. I’m so excited for you! Please let know how you like it! It’s my fav trilogy ever 🥹🥹
Yo the climax of this book is insane!!!!! On Words of Radiance currently
Yasss thanks for the hype and thanks for watching!
Gosh, I'd forgotten how wild this series is at the beginning, and it must be even more so to someone not used to how weird epic fantasy can be :D This has been a very well produced video, I love the set, and fun to listen to as well, I am looking forward to the next 3 years worth of Sanderson reaction videos :D
To add to your confusion about the pronunciation of Jasnah's name, I'll also say that Brandon did you dirty even more than you realize 😅 He himself says it with a soft Y sounds, so more like Yasnah or Yazznuh (and you'll find most of the fandom lean that way too). There's a fun bit of trivia attached to that, though you won't see it in the book - the shift from hard J-sounds to soft ones is something that happened in some cultures as a way for the lighteyes to make themselves sound more posh. So while Jasnah's name, as the name of a lighteyed woman, would be pronounced with a soft J, Jost's name, a darkeyed kid from Kaladin's hometown, would be pronounced with a hard J. You can obviously say things however you want, but I thought it might be fun to catch a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg that is Brandon's worldbuilding :)
Awe thank you! I really appreciate that ☺️☺️ Yes it’s very intense. LOTR wasn’t even this intense 😂
Ah yes. My friend told me how to say Jasnah - which he learned from listening to the audio book but I do love those random trivia facts about his world so thank you! This will help me moving forward. And thanks for not judging how I say them lol. It’s a learning curve for sure 🙌🏻
@@AlyLourim plenty of judgy people out there, I don't need to add to that list :P

For people who have read book four the Jasnah sene it has a nice little quote “then briefly Shallan heard a sound. A low thrumming, like a distant group of voices, humming together, a single PURE NOTE.”
He had us the whole time. This was written over twelve years ago.
I'm new to Sanderson, so far I've only read Skyward and I loved it. I'm gonna buy Starsight soon.
15:04 actually her name is said Yaznah😅
Haha thank you! I have learned. Some things I still say incorrectly but I don’t speak Sanderson fantasy fluent lol 🤣
Hahaha he's fond of creating weird tongue twisting words😂
@@jalalchahine1886 literally lol 😂
The not speaking out, not having a hair out of place and being sequestered in a manor thing - it is more of a Shallan's family specific thing
I love the vibe of this video
I remember reading the chapter Bridge Four when he first carried the bridge, and I'm not afraid to admit it I cried like a child
The nameless old guy that talks to Kal during the bridge run the one that Kal takes his sandals I think, he just broke my heart and I don't know anything about him😂
Haha Kaladin is something else. I love the relationship with him and Syl and she truly saves him 🥹
@@jalalchahine1886 it was super sad he died! And that’s what I love that Kal is trying to prevent right now. I don’t like Sadeas 😂

I just finished The Way of Kings last month, and I can safely say it is incredible. I’m on Words of Radiance, and now you can truly see the master work that Sanderson is so truly genius at.
Yeah he’s def a great storyteller. I also really wanna check out his YA Series Mistborn. Thanks for watching and subscribing ☺️☺️
@@AlyLourim It's not a YA series, it's most definitely adult fantasy.
@@voidrxreal yes I realized it’s YA friendly but not YA haha I had heard other ppl say otherwise I understand the confusion now
He does have some YA books, The Reckoners. Not fantasy though. Still somewhat interesting.
@@GuybrushTThreepwood Yeah I know his Skyward series is sci-fi I wish it was fantasy but thats okay. I like diving into YA especially after a big book like this lol
Such a high quality video
I'm currently rereading Way of Kings. Well, listening to it anyway since I do my reading mostly via audiobooks. I've read the first three Stormlight Archive books as well as all the other Cosmere books, but I haven't read the 4th Stormlight book yet. That's my current goal, reread the first three Stormlight books and then finally read Rhythm of War. Good luck with the series!
That’s awesome!! I love all the reading goals and tying them together. I’ve been instructed to read Warbreaker before going to the second in the series so that’s what I’ll do doing and switching to the audiobooks too lol 🙌🏻
Having read what I have, I find your thoughts about the Spren very interesting. It's very interesting to hear the perspective of someone else who is just starting out instead of having all the information we learn later on.
On the topic of gender roles within Alethi society, I find them pretty interesting since they are quite different from ours. They also feel very rooted within the ideals of their society, which you learn more of as the story goes of course. Women aren't only allowed to learn, they are expected to. Women are expected be extremely intelligent and well educated but they are also expected to be disciplined and not speak out of turn as you indicated. Meanwhile men aren't expected to be particularly educated in scholarly disciplines, instead they are expected to be soldiers, farmers, and merchants. There are a lot of other interesting factors to the male and female disciplines that you learn as the story progresses.
Not sure if warbreaker is required reading persay, but I definitely understand why you've gotten that suggestion. I think you'll like Warbreaker, it has some extremely interesting female leads.
First Brando Sando and firstish high fantasy? Good luck, and I hope you enjoy!
haha yes I certainly took on a journey for myself! thanks for watching :)
Just to clear something out (no spoilers): if I understood correctly what you said, you seem to think Kaladin was a slave when he was in the army. He wasn't. He (didn't) kill someone, and then he was made a slave.
Totally, I'm reacting as I go so I'm obviously not getting all the details till I arrive at that part in the book. I am making guesses and having fun lol :)
@@AlyLourim great video, by the way! You're in for quite the journey (pun intended, this might be slightly amusing later, I promise). Hope you enjoy it :)

Not late at all. You must be a wizard and arrived precisely when you meant to 😂🙌🏻 Thanks for the kind words about reading the series. I’m def enjoying it, it’s a lot and new for me but def think it’s good when readers step outside their comfort zone lol
I wasn't going to say anything about how you pronounced Alethi, but then you said chasms with a "ch" sound.. it's pronounced "ka" "Ka-zm"
And it's "ah-leh-thee" not "ah-lee-thee"
I don’t get through much fiction but Mistborn was great so I’m thinking of giving Sanderson another go. Thanks for the video!
I’m glad you enjoyed the video it makes you wanna check out more of his work! Yes I’ve heard Mistborn is great and I’m actually really excited to check it out after this. This might not be a popular opinion but I actually liked The Final Empire much more than The Way of Kings. It was interesting right off the bat while WoK was so slow and dragged out.

Brandon Sanderson is my favorite writer by far. The Stormlight Archive was my second series to read from him. I started with the Mistborn trilogy and then the Alloy of law. The magic in them is much simpler and clever in their usage in my opinion. (You should read those next). I enjoyed Stormight and I read it a couple years ago. It's interesting to hear what's going on in your head about book one, it seems so far away and crazy how some other things happen coming after the beginning.
Slight spoiler here but tbh it kinda isn't.
Book one focuses happens entirely on The Shattered Plains and later in the story when they are away from there and are looking at a map, they describe it as barely a thumbnails width on the map. It's crazy how the entire book one is in such a tiny place in the world and I found that very interesting. Anywho, It's 4am I should go to bed. Enjoy the rest of the series! (It's a long one lol)
Oh wow that’s intense haha. Nice! Yes I’ve heard amazing things about Mistborn. I think I might start the Skyward series after this though 😀
@@AlyLourim skyward is fun but very different. It is a great intro to sci fi for a YA audience, but it has pretty solid concepts for experienced readers as well. I got into it six months ago and just got caught up. It isn't connected to the Cosmere, but certainly doesn't suffer for it.
@@RichFreeman I’m a sucker for YA and I def need a break after this 1000 pages all world building haha. Oh it’s sci fi- I assumed fantasy 😂 here I am, going in blind again. Well I’m actually open to the sci fi aspect. Sounds fun!

Good morning! I just discovered this video last night and finished watching this morning. The Way of Kings was my first Sanderson book at the beginning of the year and I absolutely fell in love with the world, the characters, and his writing. Haha yes it’s on my TBR now lol 🙌🏻 thank you!
I LOVED this book. It's been a few years since I've read it, but I remember I lost interest after Words of Radiance because I started to sense an "algorithm", or some type of formula he was using.
Everything started to seem NPCish... It's like you can foreshadow what's going to happen once you catch on and the characters became flat...
Wait till you get to the second book “Words of Radiance” 🤯
STORMBLESSED: Honor is dead, but I’ll see what I can do

Hi friend!! Thank you for watching 🥹 Yes I really do love the way Sanderson handles mental health with his characters 🙌🏻
Now that you've made it through this book and other work from Sanderson, would you recommend starting with this one? I read LOTR when I was younger, but the only fictional book I've read in the last 13+ years was Pride & Prejudice 😅. I'm not big on New Year's resolutions, but I am going to try and read more this coming year, and I think I'd like to throw a Sanderson book into the mix. Realistically, I'll probably only get one good fantasy book in for the year, so I'll have to choose wisely.
Yeah Stormlight archives is a commitment! Some people in my discord suggest Warbreaker as a good stand alone Sanderson. Otherwise my other suggestion is Tress of the Emerald Sea. But if you want to start a series everyone says his Mistborn series is a good place to start. This Stormlight archives series has like 5 books all 1k pages and not many answers yet lol
BUT! I did just read The Priory of the Orange Tree and I think if you loved lord of the rings you would like that. So that’s actually my suggestion for you lol
@@AlyLourim Awesome, thank you!!!
I'm starting out with Way of Kings too. Am around 100 pages in. My first Brandon Sanderson book. I'm not doing a reading vlog of it, because I imagine it would take too long and my uploads would be so infrequent. I'm not a fan of fantasy.

The white ones are super pretty and split the book into multiple parts, but this was I might a bit cheaper. It was $21.99 😅 lol. No, im barely alive over here. Enjoying it, but it’s a lot 🫠 lol
As an audiobook listener, I'm gonna let you know how some of the words and names are pronounced in the audiobooks. You are welcome to ignore or do whatever with this info. I just know people will crawl right up your ass if you don't pronounce things exactly like they think it should be. So, I promise I'm not trying to be a know-it-all or mock you. I firmly believe that you are allowed to do whatever you want with a story once it leaves the author's hands.

Aw man you are in for a ride, happy to welcome you to the stormlight club, new to be sanderfan

Stormlight Archives is shaping up to be a great series. I'm a little mad I started when just the first book was out, I've had to wait on each release. I had to do the same thing for "The Wheel of Time" books from the second one on (14 in the complete series) and it can be maddening. If you find yourself looking for more High Fantasy I do recommend Robert Jordan. "The Eye of the World" is the first of the WoT series.
Thank you! Someone else recommended them to me also so clearly I should def check them out! ☺️
I am not going to spoil anything, just give some clarification on some things you either misinterpreted or didn't catch. The Stomlight Archive is very intense in it's worldbuilding.
Most of your observations about the cultural settings of this world are more about Vorinism than general Rosharian customs. Primarily Alethkar the father west you go the less people observe those customs.
While Kaladin was serving in the army he was actually in the second highest rank a darkeyes could be. Kaladin's glyph is represents dangerous.
Feel free to pronounce the words however you want. But generally Alethi is pronounced A-leth-e.
Seconded, and a further clarification. Kaladin was branded twice. The first time being when he was made into a slave, "deserter" as well as who he was serving under. The second time, after his many escape attempts, was the Shash brand, or "dangerous".
Side note, slaves branded with Shash were generally considered rare because they would usually be put to death over what qualified them for the brand.
@@wolfethorne6446 The first brands were indicating that he was a slave and where he was made a slave. It probably does not indicate that he was a deserter because the brightlady he meets at saedeas warcamp notices that he has a shash brand but only hears the deserter bit once his slave holder mentions it to her.
I'm very excited for you starting this series. The world building in the first book is amazing. But the growth and changes that the characters go through is the most incredible part of the series. I look forward to your next reaction!
Awe thank you so much ☺️🙏🏻 The second reaction is out right now for you to watch and I’m working on the 3rd one!
This was actually the book I decided to read after mutliple years of not touching any book for entertainment purpose... I just wanted that fantastic feeling of wonder about the world, magic and its characters like I had as a kid reading Tolkien and Harry Potter. This got recommended over and over wherever I looked, took some time to convince myself that 1200+ pages wasn't an issue (lol), but man am I happy I did pick it up. Loved the second book even more, fantastic series (and now working on the Cosmere as a whole).
Awe that’s awesome! I totally understand. That’s why I love reading: being immersed into that world of mystery and wonder 🙌🏻 haha yeah the big is daunting for its length lol. I just got Mistborn and I’m like really Sanderson, 700 pages? Alright here I go 😅😂
I just read all 4 book over the past two months. They are amazing and now among my favorites. Excited for you to start this amazing series!
Oh wow! You buzzed through those quick! And awe thank you! I’m excited to share my WoK journey with ya’ll! Thank you for watching ☺️☺️
I wish I could enjoy this series, but when I got halfway through the 3rd book, I stopped. I got sick of the character pov ADHD, and the Robert Jordan slog (only way I know how to describe it). I felt I couldn't sit and connect to the developing characters and stories before the pov would switch, ripping me into a new setting and character. I was also inwardly begging for deeper conversations and relationship development between Kaladin and Syl the whole damn time, but it never came. Maybe book 4 brought it, but I couldn't care about the characters enough to push through the rest of book 3 😢 I thought about it and I would care more about Rock's death than any main character. Minus Kaladin, but that's because his redeeming quality is Syl.
That’s totally okay not to like a book. I def know it’s frustrating when you were hoping for more from a series and it disappoints you 😢 and I understand- I have adhd too- the switching POV can be a lot for me too. I def prefer sticking with the same couple of characters the whole way through a book 🙌🏻 I get that there’s less character and world development but I feel it keeps the reader more attached
Spoiled :(
This is so interesting to see a first time reaction of the way of kings

So happy to find this as old as it is. Having more episodes to see is great. It's generally recommended that you read warbreaker after the second storm light book.

I am probably in the minority here but I enjoyed Mistborn far more. I judge by how the books starts, Mistborn pulled me in and never let go for three books....
This one....other than a strong action packed opening, the beginning did not compel me much, though Brandon is the king of lore and world building...
I haven’t read Mistborn yet- I’m checking it out next! But I’m sure I’ll agree. Many in the comments already said it’s much easier to get into. And also Brandon has said Stormlight is his heavy world/lore building books. Sadly I went in blind and didn’t do research 😂 my bf said Read THIS book he’s a big deal like Tolkien in fantasy. Glad to see someone who's also started on their Sanderson journey. This was also my first book, and even though it takes a while to get into it (for the reasons you mentioned: it's a big world and lots of characters to take in), from the half-way point, I was suuuuper hooked. @@AlyLourim I just finished the white sand series, I am taking a break from his writing style and will be tackling mistborn this fall. Hopefully you will enjoy skyward. I may do that in 2023. I purchased Michael j Sullivan Fairlane in June, so I have to read that as well.
@@EstellaSpeaks awesome. I’ll have to check out that last book you mentioned. Yeah I’m also in the middle of the All Sould Trilogy and then I’m gonna read some spooky books for autumn 🎃
@@AlyLourim unfortunately, i going to have to let you keep the spooky. Me and sleep 💤💤💤 have excellent relationship. My goal is to keep it that way 😉. Happy Reading to you!!
This is an amazing idea! Also, well executed! Please do more! Thank you! :D
Awe thank you so much 🥹🥹 Yes I am! I will be doing videos til I finish the book. I have a different book video essay coming out this week and then we will get back into WoK. They just take time to make. So thanks for your patience and I’m so glad you’re enjoying them ☺️☺️
I thought Wheel of time had intense lore- this is on another level - I'm just starting and trying to understand- the politics, culture and geography of this world is making my head explode 🤯😵💫
Agreed it’s A LOT. I’m not sure I’ll return to this series because of the little reward to the readers
I really enjoyed this video! Looking forward to following along with the rest of your reaction series!
Awe thank you!! Excited to share it with you! They’ll be released every other week ☺️ so def stay tuned! Okay.. back to reading for me lol 📖
I clicked be cause you looked like Daniel Radcliffe with a wig and glasses.
am I terrible in that my first take away is that I hate how you pronounce Jasnah?
I pronounced it the same as her, how would you say it?
@@Magus322 if you watch the next video, she changed how she says it. I'm terrible at describing how to say something, but that's how.
This is never the book I recommend people start with for modern high fantasy. Usually I'd recommend Mistborn or something easier. Way of Kings is not an easy read lol
Haha it happened by accident. I knew nothing about Sanderson just his name and that he was a fantasy author. I did a book shopping video and made the game of my bf picking me a book and I had to read it (it’s on my channel). Well he picked this and here I am haha. I’m jumping to the Skyward series after this and then Mistborn. I’ll do the rest of this series on audiobook. I’m enjoying it but yes it is a lot haha
@@AlyLourim Oh cool! Well I'm a very heavy fantasy reader and high fantasy is my favorite subgenre (I actually write it too!) so I can give you tons of recommendations whenever you want them!
@@UdyKumra oh thank you! I appreciate that. Any suggestions that are a stand alone book? (I’m reading too many series atm haha)
@@AlyLourim I definitely recommend The Sword of Kaigen by M. L. Wang, that is my favorite standalone fantasy novel. If you don't mind YA, A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is great too. I haven't read many standalone high fantasies though, so I don't have too many recs there, though I am planning to read the most famous one of them all this year-Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay.
@@UdyKumra I love YA books. These are great recs. I’m gonna check them out. Thank you so much 🙏🏻😀
Ugh. Just wait to you get to the Sanderlanche at the end of this book. I don't know if any other piece of art, media, or what have you has filled me with so much emotion. I thought I understood not being able to put a book down. But the last ~200 pages of The Way of Kings? No way, no how, I tell you
Hahaha this is very exciting to know! I’m enjoying it but it’s def been slow moving. Love when the ending makes you keep going 🙌🏻
Wow, the quality of this video is really so good. I know this channel is gonna go places, just subbed.
PSA: Stormlight is my 2nd fave fantasy series, hope you enjoy it all the way
Awe omg thank you 🥹🥹 I’m so glad you enjoyed the video 🙏🏻🙌🏻 ooohh! What’s your first fav fantasy series?
@@AlyLourim Its One Piece, a manga. Stormlight is my fav novel series
What a fantastic reaction video. Great use of art and quotes. And your lighting and backdrop are fantastic.
Awe thank you 🥹🙏🏻 so glad you enjoyed it! Second one is out now and more coming soon!
Loved this, please keep making videos!
Thank you! Yes I’m going to do them for The Way of Kings til I finish the series 🙌🏻
I really wouldn't try to relate any of Sanderson magic systems to soft magic systems. Really, its one of the reasons I like the Cosmere. Its very hard magic. Rules you can't break. No hand wavy wand type magic. Its kind of hard, being in this for over a decade, listening to a new person read these books lol. You all just get sooooooo much wrong.
I love these books, but I actually listen to them on Audible… the same two amazing narrators read the first 4 books so far ❤️
I’m gonna switch to the audiobooks once I wish WoK! Everyone has convinced me lol. I’m just reading the physical book because it’s easier to keep track of thoughts and notes for the videos 🤓 thank you for watching ☺️
@@AlyLourim Just a fun fact about the readers. They are married and do narration on basically all of Sandersons books and the Wheel of Time.
@@nibblitman omg that’s so cute 🥹🥹 thank you for sharing that with me 🙌🏻
I miss the feelings of reading TWOK for the first time. I hope you enjoy it and read WoR, it is the best one of the four released so far.
Thank you! Awe! I know, so many books I wish I could read for the first time lol 🙌🏻
I'm actually re-reading this series
That’s awesome!
@@AlyLourim its one of my favorite series
@@quietrobert2010 that’s great! I’m def gonna dive into the rest of the series but will probably do audiobook so I can get through it faster. And then I wanna check out his Skyward series next 🤓
Just in time for my third read of this series that will take place this fall.
Oh I love that! Is this your fav series then? 😀
@@AlyLourim my favorite ongoing series, yeah. I completed my third read of the Mistborn trilogy last month.
@@MetalGildarts that’s awesome! I def have Mistborn on the list but wanna check out the Skyward series first 🙌🏻
@@AlyLourim Skyward is t my favorite from him but it’s still good. Do check out Mistborn after you’re done with Stormlight.
If you didn't love the book you need to read it again. lol
Should have done this for Mistborn first. You would have understood things much easier. And it all comes together.
I’m having a blast reading this book :)
I started Sanderson with Wok and I regret nothing.
Jasnah is pronounced as Yas-nuh
Thank you! Yes a couple ppl told me already, so helpful 🙌🏻
I do recommend the audiobook. The voices are so well done.
@@Dichmnds I have heard this! It’s easier to read it while making videos but for the rest of the series I’ll do audio books and I’m going to explore other Sanderson books that are shorter for video essays lol
I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre. I know I'm in the minority here, but I just don't understand the hype about Brandon Sanderson. His books are readable, but I would never have guessed that he's considered an exceptional author, much less one of the great modern fantasy masters. Every book of his that I've read has felt mediocre to me.
Something about his writing doesn't click for me. The prose feels juvenile and bland. The stories and the characters are not particularly compelling. The world building and magic systems seem like an overwrought self indulgent exercise. The surrealism in the world building doesn't feel justified in the story. The humor doesn't land. I can't find the insight into the human condition, and I can't find the art.
I know I'm in the wrong here. So many people love these books so much. I just don't see what they're seeing, and it bothers me since I love the genre and I really want to understand.
If you like books with surreal settings in which characters with super powered weapons fight demons, I think the Vagrant trilogy by Peter Newman is vastly better than The Way of Kings in every regard. It's like reading a Hieronymous Bosch painting. It's funny, it's strange, it's touching, and it's a wild trip. If you like the Magicians, I can't possibly recommend a book more than I recommend Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. It's the best book ever written about wizards.
I love The Magicians! Thanks for your recommendations. I understand, I think Sanderson is a fantastic writer but he’s not my favorite dish ya know? I prefer fantasy set in our real world. Truly LOTR is the only high fantasy I’ve found that I like. Granted I haven’t read a ton but I always gravitate towards fantasy set it out real world. However, thank you for watching ☺️☺️🙏🏻
@@AlyLourim Thanks for the excellent content! I completely understand that I'm underestimating Sanderson and am likely dead wrong about him.
Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell isn't set in modern times, but it's fairly close - it's set in 19th century UK. It's has a heavy Jane Austen influence, if you like her (I personally love Austen).
@@asafhadari7336 Thank you :) Who knows, you might not be. Everyone has different taste and that's totally allowed - even if some people feel otherwise.
Oh yeah, that's still set in OUR world so I can dig it, and OMG yesss Austen is the best! I think that's why I love LOTR so much, it feels like it could be from the medieval era but with Magic. I will def add this to my tbr. Thank you!
I don't think you're in the wrong, man. Like, I'm not really big on Sanderson either, there's just too much about his writing that doesn't click for me, and I think it's okay not to enjoy something even though it might seem like everyone else does. It's just impossible to suit everybody's tastes, I guess.
@@lenkaw.7243 I agree. I just wish I saw what everyone else sees. People absolutely adore him, and I just can't figure out what it is that makes him so fascinating. There are other authors I don't connect with, but I can usually figure out what it is that people love about them. With Sanderson, if I didn't know that he was so well loved it would never have occurred to me that he's anything beyond average.
I pray they won’t make a screen adaptation. We all know it would be woke A.k.a. bastardized for political propaganda. Maybe in 10 years they might stay true to the books.
I get it, movie adaptions are hard and it really depends on the studio and their agenda.
Stormlight is rough for someone not used to high fantasy. Maybe work through the wheel of time. It's longer but it's easier to read than stormlight.
Well isn't this a pleasant vibe
Thank you ☺️🥹
Love this series though it wouldn’t be my recommendation for a first time high fantasy reader. For Sanderson, Mistborn is much more accessible.
Hahah I agree. I got into Sanderson on a fluke. My bf suggested I read this series and as a fantasy lover & I didn't know anything about Sanderson - I KNOW- lol, so here I am. I'm hopping onto the Skyward YA series after this and then I will go to Mistborn. But I need to finish this first book at least haha
@@AlyLourim TSLA is a MASSIVE commitment. Currently there are 4 books (Or 8 if you read them in parts) and we are waiting on a fifth and there could be more in this era after that. Brando Sandos Cosmere series (TSLA, Mistborn, Elantris etc) are supposed to be split into eras. Mistborn has concluded era 2 no other series has caught up the timeline yet but TSLA is BY FAR the biggest and "Most Important" of the Cosmere at the moment.
The best way to view it is kinda of like a macro conflict we are only being able to get glimpses of because it is being told on a micro scale the stories of Kaladin, Shallan, Jasnah etc are all important and will play crucial roles in the story to come but are only small parts of a much larger story taking place throughout the Cosmere.
@@skakried7673 awe gotcha. Very cool he’s made such a large universe. Thanks for the notes on it ☺️
It’s pronounced Yas-nah. Jasnah.
You are VERY ambitious to start with Stormlight, most people start with Mistborn or Warbreaker
😂 I went in blind unaware he had written anything else. My bf told me to read it lol I should have researched but oh well. Here we are. Thanks for watching ☺️
Don’t write off the book too early is what I’d say, the thing that people say, “there’s always another secret”, it’s honestly true. Sanderson is like the master of carrots hanging from sticks, only letting you nibble at the overall story while he’s leaving clues for the future and the magic systems that you have no idea about. I would highly recommend trying Warbreaker after this if you want to carry on with Stormlight, it’s faster paced and shared characters with Stormlight (though you will have no idea who they are and shouldn’t look it up yet!). If Stormlight was too big a leap into epic fantasy for you then try Mistborn, it’s also fantastic, and it starts with more of an infodump that helps you understand what’s going on.
@@TheFlyingP1g thank you! and yeah its very much outside what I normally read. my next book from Sanderson will def be MIstborn. I actually just bought it lol. And then I've been instructed by many people on here to check out war breaker next so im gonna do that. And also im gonna hop to audiobooks so I can get through the rest of them since theyre so long lol. Im too invested in the characters to leave now lol.
@@AlyLourim yeah I have only experienced it through the audiobooks, Michael Kramer and Kate Reading are great narrators, you also have the option of the graphic audio productions, which is more theatrical
@@TheFlyingP1g yes I've both are fantastic so still debating haha but will probably just do the regular audiobook first 🙌
Its adorable seeing new sanderlings join the family. Also, I really forget how obscure and misleading twok is at times
The lore is basically set up as a mystery: there are plenty of clues and specific information, but how they fit together isn't spelled out right away. The book is definitely a bit overwhelming at first with how weird the world is, but Brandon does a good job of giving clear goals to the two (so far) main characters to carry you through all of it.
Bridge 4 for life!
If you want to read an epic fantasy series read The Wheel Of Time
I’m currently reading this series aloud every night for about 30-45 mins to my girlfriend. She typically falls asleep in the middle of each chapter but sometimes she stays awake because the story is too captivating. 😊
Awe that’s so cute!
[Spoilers ahead]
You mentioned how "Women are not supposed to be quippy and smart"
Uh, that's basically your job if you're an Alethi woman. The whole worldbuilding of the Alethi culture is that men destroy people on the battlefield, and women destroy each other in scholarship or in writing. In book 3 you see how Dalinar's wife could not stand being an Alethi because it felt like every discussion with another woman was a battle of words where she felt like she always lost and was made a laughing stock.
One strange subversion I found in SA was how it always seemed easier for a woman to become a warrior, than for a man to become a scholar. And pages were always spent on the latter, and all the characters talked about it in confusion and suspicion. but whenever a female character said, "I'm going to pick up a sword" a male character would say, "sounds good, morning maneuvers are at dawn."
My brother tried to convince me to start reading this series for three years before I finally gave it a go and I was kicking myself for not starting it earlier once I did! I’m onto Oathbringer now ☺️
The sanderlanche where everything starts ramping up to a close at the end of the books still brings me so much excitement
Awe that’s awesome!! Yeah my bf had heard great things about Sanderson and knows how much I love fantasy so he told me to buy this book and read it lol. I def wanna check out other Sanderson stuff after this 🙌🏻 Thank you for watching ☺️☺️
Oathbringer is my favourite! I keep remembering the part in which Dalinar has a flashback where he is drawing his sword across the ground because his shardplate was damaged that made his sword too heavy to lift! That plays out as an epic part of the book in my head bcuz he had just defeated an army which should have been impossible for him. (Hope you read this part already - This shouldnt be much of a spoiler tho. Sorry in advance if you haven't)
@@nicelodeon4576 haha def doesn’t feel like a spoiler you’re all good 🙌🏻
ive only read asoiaf, started this and im STRUGGLING
That’s totally fair! I’m literally doing these videos because I’m struggling. I’ve heard reading Mistborn by Sanderson first is easier. And there’s also Skyward which is a YA series I’m gonna check out next. Those might be easier to get into if you wanna read Sanderson. I fully support not finishing a book of it’s not your thing 🙌🏻☺️
I know these books really well, and your comments are very out of order. Did you even notice?
So lewd, showing your safe hand...
Seriously 🤣
Well you better start falling in love with that book
😂 if you want my second video I’m start to get attached
This is for real my favorite book.
Awe that’s awesome! I hope you enjoyed the video! Currently my favorite fantasy series is The Magicians but that could always change haha 🙌🏻
I've never heard someone say chasms like that lol (Canadian here). I've only ever heard kha-zimz: like cattle, not Cha-zimz: like chapter.
I’m human and made a mistake 🙂 no one is perfect
BRIDGE 4!!!!!!!!!!!! that boy Kal, talk about a sad back story. I wanna cry for that boy. but I ain't soft...I still cried a little bit though. the most recent book felt way too long tho. it just dragged. but I hope you enjoy the cosmere journey.
Hahah yeah he has a rough back story for sure. Yeah I def want to finish the Stormlight archives and check out Mistborn and some of Brandon’s other work. I’ll def be switching to audiobook for the rest of the Stormlight series lol. Thanks for watching 🙌🏻
Listening to this I realize I might have mispronounced ”Shallan” haha… Is it just me pronouncing her name as you’d pronounce ShallAN and not Shal-Lan?
Honestly I’ve been told Sanderson says pronounce how you think best. And funny enough out of all the things from his book this is the only thing I haven’t been told I’ve pronounced wrong. So who knows lol 😅
I started reading Brandon Sanderson thanks to the duke and duchess podcast and it has been one of the best experiences ever. Im currently on book 3 and expecting Rythms of war for xmas
Oh what a great gift! Glad you’re enjoying it ☺️
Low fantasy and high fantasy are less about whether you're in a world similar to the real one or in a totally made up universe. It's more about how realistic the magical elements are. The more unrealistic and out there (swords cutting mountains in half, giant robots throwing galaxies like shuriken etc.) the higher the fantasy. You could have a totally made up world that is like a mirror image of medieval europe and has no magic of any sort, and that would be low fantasy, whereas you could have a story set in contemporary earth, but have people use energy attacks from their fingertips that can blow up entire planets like in DBZ, and that'd be high fantasy.
Stormlight Archive gets to be pretty high fantasy as the books go on and characters unlock more power tiers, but especially the first book and so on it's pretty basic low fantasy stuff outside of the starting action scene with the assassin and the final fights.
wow starting with Stormlight instead of Mistborn, ambitious. hope you have a great time!
😅 you’re telling me! I went in blind not knowing much by Sanderson & this was recommended to me so here I am haha 🙌🏻 thank you for watching! And I’m def enjoying WoK but excited once I finish to read something more bite size like his YA Skyward series lol
I would definitely read Mistborn and Warbreaker before Oathbringer.
