Hey Bookworms! I know physical availability for this series has been an issue in the past. But you can consistently buy the trade paperbacks on Amazon as they are in automatic reprint mode now. You can get them here: amzn.to/48q1qdt
No, sadly, you cannot get most of the series on hardcover anymore.

Been reading it for the past 2 months and it is easily one of the best things I've ever read.

The Sun Eater Renaissance is awesome to witness. Bit of a rocky beginning(imo) but it's incredible how this series increases exponentially in quality. If you're starting this fresh, buckle up. Massive universe with one of the few well done First Person POVs ever and complex characters. I love this series so much.

These books have changed my life. They are the first books since wot that I felt so completely enthralled by. I read them in December, immediately reread them, and am struggling to get into anything else because my brain is so in Sun Eater. My best reading friend and husband have both read them since, so I thankfully have people to discuss them with. My husband even wrote me a Sun Eater themed love letter in my Valentine. ❤
I could drown in the lore of this world. They have made me laugh and sob. The writing is beautiful too.

I read Empire of Silence a month ago and loved it. However, as I was watching the page count mount I kept thinking, "He's not leaving much time to get to the bit where he destroys a sun etc." Then it became apparent that this element of the story was not going to be in this book. Although I enjoyed the book, to find that the main selling point didn't happen was something of a let down. However, I have Howling Dark on my ereader next in line after my current read and will continue with the series.
I tried reading Dune a few times many years ago but it didn't gel with me so I can't comment on Ruocchio ripping on it. However, Empire of Silence did have echoes for me of Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer. Funnily enough, I'm currently reading a book of short stories in honor of Gene Wolfe and several of them take Wolfe's characters or settings and write fanfic into the gaps. So far nobody has done it well. Writers like Wolfe and Ruocchio are at the top tier for a reason.

I have recently read the first book and definitely enjoyed it enough to continue. I really enjoy the space opera genre, which I think this is a modern interpretation of. I am always happy to support a fellow Dune lover and I could definitely see the Dune influence. I think my single problem with the book was I heard a lot about the Dune influence and I could see some of the similarities. But you are right, lots of sci fi has these influences.
I like the way the scientific elements are done. When I first read Dune I didn’t really see strong science fiction elements (I’m in the camp that believes science fiction is more than a book or film set in space, it should have other elements). However the second time I read Dune I got how much those books are about ecology and human influence on the environment. I recently read a book called Worlds of Dune which explained Herbert’s influences. I didn’t see quite as much in Empire of Silence but perhaps this changes. I look forward to reading more!
    Happy reading everyone!

Does the series ever introduce any cosmic horror or lovecraftian horror elements, and would you recommend it to someone that usually only enjoys the grimdark side of fantasy? The answers may be the key to convincing me to read this series.

    • @mikesbookreviews
      @mikesbookreviews  7 місяців тому +2

      1) absolutely
      2) There is lots of death and space can be quite grim but I'm not sure I'd label it as grimdark as it has nowhere the violence of a First Law or Red Rising and Hadrian is generally not a bad guy.

I read book 1 like a year and a half ago because of your vids and thought it was meh. I’m gonna give it another shot, but not until I finish The Expanse. Problem is I don’t remember many plot points of the book so I have to reread book 1.

@@offworlder4694 oh interesting, didn’t know that. Do you recommend doing that instead of rereading book 1? I listened to it on audible the first time and didn’t really like the guy’s reading voices so that may have played into my dislike.

I saw your review of the first book months ago and pickup the book. But I struggle so bad to finish it. Been trying to finish it thrice but maybe it's not for me

I've read all of the Red Rising series and all of Suneater so far. I'm my opinion, on a scale of 1-10, Suneater is at the very least 2 points higher than Red Rising.

Funny enough i started this series on Friday (because the first 2 books are free on audible if you subscribe), but stopped to relisten to Dune.

You say that like reading fast is a bad thing; sure a great or classical book must be enjoyed like aged wine “not that I drink” slow but I’d be so happy if I could read fast as I’d get through a lot of my reading list that just keeps getting bigger and bigger whereas I’m struggling to get through all these great great books in my life

I think the other characters in the book are flat and not well developed besides the main character.
But I love the politics in the book. But I agree there is something in the book for everyone. Different people like the book for different reasons.
Each book can be read as stand alone . I read them out of order and skipped some of the books. I was able to follow along and enjoy the books anyway. This attest to great writing by the author. Each book plot is independent of the other book, but still part of the series. The book is well written.

I can agree that some of the other shipmates of Hadrian I never got attached to.
