Our thanks to US Navy Lieutenant Commander Aaron "Vern" Vernallis for taking the time to show us the F/A-18 flight clothing and equipment discussed in the interview.
Clearly the lighting, sound, even acting are not Oscar-worthy, but--hey--now you know what the flight gear looks like!
0:21 he had to do it to em
Oh man I've been searching for a video like this for ages! I finally found it. Thank you for the share!
You're welcome!
Thanks for this video. It is an amazing integration on your podcast episode. I really appreciate time you spent for this (and this is valid for you and also for all of your guests!).
Ciao Vincent
Luca Guccione thanks, Luka! 😎
What a great breakdown of the flight clothing! Do you slide your watch outside of the (flight suit or gloves) when you're flying?
I personally did not--I just left it under my flight suit sleeve and pulled the sleeve back briefly whenever I needed to look (there is also a time reading on the HUD).
Of course, didn't even pass my mind that you could read time off the HUD. Thanks for the reply and keep up the good work! I'll be applying in December either Navy or Air force and the podcast is very helpful and motivating.
Fantastic.
Great vid. BZ
Just found your podcast today, really enjoy it. I have always been fascinated with fighter jets. You all have the best job in the world. Will reccomend your podcast to the guys at work!
Great video.
love the boots!
Hey you were on that documentary about aircraft carriers on KPBS. 🤙🏼
Incredible, very good video. I would like to know what each flight suit pocket is used for. THANKS
Cool.... Id love to hear more about the radio equipment....
"The most tiring part of the entire flight....." hahaha. When I lived in SoCal, close to Miramar, many moons ago... I friended several Naval aviators and they all had sharp wit and good humor! I should of asked them if that was part of the training. ;-]
I think the job attracts that sort of person.
@@FighterPilotPodcast -- oh geez... I know you have to hold back because of youtube policies, etc... but I would sure like to hear more of the callsign/"campfire talk" that you and Ferg had to bite your lip on.
@@strange0eye We are considering an R-rated callsign discussion...
@@FighterPilotPodcast -- Common man!?!? Go all in and make it Z rated... just skip R, X-rated, MA-Mature Audiences altogether! hahaha.
@@strange0eye Most callsigns don't get THAT raunchy.
Very cool 😎
Need a video explaing the Behind Enemy Line's pilots equipment
Yes
Good morning
Good evening
Now we need to grab a PR and see what in the survival vest and seat pan.
Great idea! I actually do discuss that during the listener question segment of a follow on episode.
You you where dry sutes with thermal laryers for flights over water
Badass
Good
I see he’s sporting the “brown” flight boots! 😁
Most aircrew do. I never converted though--I work black.
Some guys wore Red Wings but I'm not sure who supplies the Navy standard brown boots.
TheCajunkraut Belleville 330ST
The Fighter Pilot Podcast Belleville is the primary supplier for the brown boots. And, the Red Wings are not authorized for flight use.
Those are the Red Wing Work - Style 2233
Amazing all respect to USA airforce… I love it so much.
Thanks! The Air Force is pretty good too but Vern and I are Navy guys!
Um this is a navy pilot please wake up
Please tell me the suit up room and the cockpit have AC.
Thanks for the video, cool stuff. I’m a 16 year old who is working hard to do this kind of thing in the future, it’s my dream and videos like this and your podcasts are great resources, I enjoy them a lot! Any chance you could do a podcast about NROTC and what’s required to get in?
Hey Owen, good luck, bud--I hope you make it!
We will have to take a hard look at doing that because you're not the first person to ask. Stay tuned!
Fighter Pilot Podcast I’ll stay tuned!
Good luck .
Same bro
My nephew is a naval aviator. He was a varsity sports (tennis) team leader, involved in community service projects, maintain 3.89 GPA, straight A’s in math, physics, chemistry, and computer subjects. No criminal records, 21/20 vision, within the BMI (Aka, not fat), workout 3 tribes in the gym. He was not good enough for Naval Academy, but he got full Naval Scholarships and Presidential Scholarships to Embry-Riddle Aeronuatical University, majoring in Aerospace Engineering.
Highly recommend that you maintain above 3.5 GPA, be a sports team leader in high-school, vision 22/20 or better, not fat (ie, 15 pull-ups, 50 sit-ups in one go), no criminal records, and demostrate high aptitude for Math, Physics, Chemistry, and computer. If you want to go to Naval Academy, you have to be better than this.
I’ve been in the ready rooms with the pilots. Pretty nice guys in there.
Guys and gals!
Is it a HGU-68P helmet?
I heard that the Navy will adopt the current USAF HGU-55/P helmet, do you confirm ?
By the look of it I believe that is the -68 but am not entirely sure (strange that even though we wore it every day we--or at least, I--never knew the nomenclature. I suppose because it didn't matter). Haven't heard about a possible conversion to the -55.
The Fighter Pilot Podcast Thank you so much for your reply and thank you for your service.
Hi how about the bag that they alway carry what inside, curiosity saying
Covered that during the listener question segment of an episode some time ago.
I know 5 years ago was a long time ago.. I just viewed this and am fascinated with LC Aaron's brown boots. Are you able to tell me what is the Brand Name and where can I get a similar pair ?
Believe they are Redwings but unsure which model
@@FighterPilotPodcast Thank you.. that helps!
@@marchris5262 👍
I've got to ask; How do you deal with numbers 1's or even worse, number 2's?
This is answered on subsequent episodes--keep listening!
gotta admit the flight jackets are the coolest..
I know this is an older video but where would a holster go (providing a firearms is carried)?
Goes on last and tucks in on either the pilot's left or right side.
On the right front there is a yellow tag hanging down. What is that?
Right front of what?
viking foots not a problem they serve capatchino down on the river unless you prefer the trees then the opposite much more better
I know its a movie but in top gun mavrick , no shade on the helmet ? some thing new ?
so you can see the actors' faces.
What about the watch and sidearm?
Watch is optional. Sidearm is government-issue 9mm worn during combat ops only.
Do you have a video showing what the pilots carry in the pockets of their coverall suit?
Unfortunately not
@@FighterPilotPodcast Thanks for the fast response. Bummer. Any ideas where I could find that information?
@@dirtyscoundrel2013 you’re welcome.

what is that tube thing that hangs out of the G suit? does that plug into the mask?
No, that plugs into the aircraft to provide the air to inflate the G-suit
Nice, I wish my father kept his after retirement, i do t know, may be there was a rule which he couldnt! :(
I assume flight suit and gloves are personal belonging to keep but harness, helmet and g suit are military property.
rob roy my father has his helmet.
Ya...I wear all that same shit in my Piper Cherokee... Works well when dog fighting in the pattern. Lol
Do fighter pilots carry sidearms?
sk85 skate Yes they do, probably not always, but they do on combat missions.
Is it new or does this guy look like Oscar Isaac
What boots are those?
They look like red wings
What exactly are the boots he is wearing please?
Look like Red Wings but I'm not exactly sure.
@@FighterPilotPodcast ok thanks maybe Corcoran
What does this guy fly?
F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet.
Can't they take their personal phones along with them.?
I couldnt find the podcast on stitcher
We are not currently on Stitcher, but we can look into it.

Luke I am your...sorry wrong vid
And I thought my school backpack was heavy...
What happens when your in the sky and you need to go bathroom?
You use a "piddle pack."
Diaper
bathroom breaks ?
Challenging.
He does not like fire
Do they not carry a firearm?
Only in combat operations and it's usually a separate shoulder harness.
You can find everything on youtube. Incredible... I wonder if there's a self brain surgery on here. :) That's next. By the way, awesome vid!! Thank you for uploading it!
