This is definitely in my top 10 favorite videos. What a time to be alive. I’d normally have to try and fail repeatedly to strike up a conversation with a crusty aviator at an air show for this info.
Thank you for the continued videos and helping fuel motivation. Have already completed my AFOQT and the TBAS and should be ready to start applying before the end of the year. Finishing my degree has been a real challenge but just a means to an end goal. Thankfully surrounded by good mentors that are also pushing me and even took me to the sim pits on base and said I handled it like a natural. Also thankful to have flight supervision and commanders knowing my goals and ready to put in their recommendations after I put in my part of the work.
Great channel Hasard! Us older guys has passed our chance to become fighter pilots, still cool to live our fighter pilot dreams vicariously through your stories. I also augment that by flying RC planes from the cockpit using head-tracking FPV cameras. The F-35 helmet mounted displays are similar to flight info displays on our goggles - OSD - on screen display. I find canopy frame like the one on F-35 hampers formation flying and dog fight performance because it blocks views of lead/bogie at times. Do you find that comparing the frameless canopy F-16 vs the F-35?
I love the professionalism of this gentleman. He is super clear in his explanations and gives us an idea of what he does but still without revealing any sensitive information. For example the analogy of the pizza shops for the Helmet mounted display was genius, it gave us an idea but didn’t give away anything really
Hazard, you should do a video about the preparations and lead up events before a deployment overseas, and what it’s like during that flight for many hours. Your videos are great to watch and provide a lot of insight, thanks.
Hey Hasard, I'm curious about something. I flew the F-15c with the 43rd tfs out at Elmendorf, oh so long ago...far before augmented reality. When you're in the mode that lets you look "through" the jet, doesn't that lead to spatial disorientation/LOC scenarios? I'm thinking at least partially of the F-104 accident rate because pilots couldn't catch even a glimpse of the leading edges of their wings, except in rearview mirrors. I'm assuming you can cycle through this mode quickly, which may alleviate the problem, and of course...practice. But I'm curious, as looking around and seeing only sky seems simultaneously disconcerting and cool as hell! Thanks brother
I’m no expert but I believe the helmet is synced up the the TGP/EOTS on the nose which means if you turn your head enough you should be able to see the wings along with other parts of the plane.
The ice pack solution is brilliant. Sometimes simple is best. At work some people have a very expensive in van computer holder. To save on space. I tie computer via handle to steering wheel with chord. Job done😃

Hey Hasard great 👍 video , thanks for the tips , some details make all difference and we do look for flight gear for years !!! Keep up the great channel 👌
Combat gear checklist would be a great video as well. Survivor gear, weapon, MRE,and location beacon ,etc. Would be really neat to see what protocol is if you lose aircraft behind enemy lines and have to bail.
Ice packs were my excuse to keep myself cool at school. I did this in Grade 5 and stopped as the school secretary found out why and gave me a bandage instead or just told me to walk it off. 😂😂
What about something to snack on like an energy or protein bar? I'd also include something like a mini altoids tin with maybe a few ibuprofen, antacid pills like Tums, allergy tabs,.
idk why but i never thought about how helmet weight would effect how many gs you could pull, also i want that f-35 helmet so bad even just a cosplay version
Of course we are only interested in what you carry when going out for a combat situation.. I think its a must for a fighter pilot to wear a watch...just in case you loose your plane behind enemy lines..
Hasard Sir. I know that space is at a premium in your cockpit. Where do you store a bag and a water bottle ( or several) when you are maneuvering around? I can’t imagine the F-35 has a built in water cup holder! Also, if you fly to another base for training for a few days, where do you store your bag? Has to be in the bomb bay, right? Again, I can’t imagine that it comes with room for an overnight bag in the cockpit.
I have to say I’m really enjoying your videos. A quick question, do you wear the G suit if you’re just transferring from one base to another? Also don’t undervalue the importance of an accurate watch. If you have an instrument failure then your watch could become a vital piece like what happened to Apollo 13. I know you prefer just a plain water bottle but I suggest you check out the Camelpak water bottles as they are soft, insulated and have a safety valve.
So the idea of the jacket on the B model is if the jet is in VTOL configuration and the lift fan behind the cockpit were to fail the nose would suddenly drop and most likely the arms fly up so you would be able to grab the ejection handle so if the jets sensors detect the fan has failed it'll pull your arms in and punch you out the jet without even thinking about it and the next thing the pilot will know is he's already out the jet.
I was looking forward to a demonstration of the helmet's abilities in greater depth. The ability to look through the aircraft superstructure is an amazing visual aid, however uncomfortable it may be? I am guessing that you can select between modes very rapidly for your needs?
How about food, weapons like a sidearm or an smg? I only ask because what if a fighter pilot falls behind enemy lines? What kind of survival kit stuff they carry with them?
Its kind of cool that the G's you pull don't screw up the watch's time measurements. Mechanical Self-wound Watches are one of the most under-rated technologies today.
If Hasard won't be breaking protocol I would like to know what goes into a COMBAT flight bag! I also have the Skillcraft multi-pen that I keep in my bag, I needed that red ink to highlight contract discrepancies.
Nice vid but you really need a proper aviators’ watch. I fly with the old version of the Breitling Emergency but there are also great mechanical Breitling watches, one day I hope to buy the Navytimer. Cheers!
What are the lanyards for the feet? I can recall some early 50s/60s style of cable driven units which connected to the pilots heals. What is the best method used now. Flailing injuries sound truly horrendous.
I was a crew chief. I hated it , when an air crew , especially the wso, would drop their pen/ pencil in the cockpit. I would have to do extreme yoga to find it. Occasionally, we would have to remove the ejection seat. I can't tell you how many times I found a Rolex or other high end watch in the cockpits.
What about the "endurance extension" devices, to help you deal with all of that water you've been consuming? Yeah, I know you probably sweat out a lot of it during all of the heavy maneuvering, but eventually, all of that water catches up with you. Has USAF deployed anything more sophisticated than the plastic bags with the powder? As an older pilot, I'm finding that my "range" ain't what it used to be. Looking for some good solutions. A couple of years back, I heard about a device called "AMXD", or something like that. It looked expensive, but I'd be willing to spring some serious bucks for something that did not require gymnastics, and might even be usable in a crew environment.
Is there a SOP for a downed pilot on what to do with that information on that iPad or knee board? Would any of it be sensitive or possibly useful if a pilot was down over hostile territory?

Being a Pilot looks so cool! Im so torn between that and medicine. I’ve wanted medicine for my whole life but I love aviation and those planes so much. Anyone have an opinion?
I mean, if I studied medicine a high priority on the buy list would be a plane, and I’d still work for the Air Force, but if I was a fighter pilot, I’d get to fly all of the time in those insane planes.
You’re only going to be asked to do so much as a pilot flying a plane as expensive as it is. As a physician, the bean counters just ask for more and more. If I had to do it again I would have gone into flight school.
Why don’t you join the Air Force and become a pilot, put in an enlistment or two, then use the GI bill to pay for your medical school? I have a colleague who did just that, albeit in the Navy, and he doesn’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt to contend with like others.
