Beautiful toyota. It's a remarkable combination. A pretty old chassis but with an updated engine. That is how you make use of an amazing car.

I can vouch for how great this combo is. I've got a '93 2GR swapped MR2 in white as well. To anyone considering an MR2... get it NOW! They are going to start appreciating soon (thanks to great videos like this reviving the popularity.)

+florin colesnicenco I completely agree. Our camera assistant and good friend of ours rode shotgun while we were filming some of this and he wants one really badly now. Said it was some of the most fun he's ever had in a car... And he's ridden in almost every car we've filmed including all of the 1000hp builds and the Porsche 918.

Had to fix a crack in the windshield last summer in my red sw20. 3 out of 3 mechanics came out when I parked asking me what kind of Ferrari it was... Priceless
+Roads Untraveled That's crazy! I actually just imported a black NA 1990 from Japan. I imported it to sell stateside, but ever since it arrived I've been contemplating keeping it. It's like nothing I've driven before (especially since I daily an STi). Everything about the SW20's is awesome. If you have any questions about the import process let me know. It's not easy, but totally worth the trouble.
+James Atkinson Saw one once where the guy had kitted it into a F40 replica. It was actually pretty terrible up close but convincing from a few car lengths away.

Personally I think this is a much better and much more informative video than the one take. Very down to earth and humbling. Very nice build!
The only thing I don't like on this car is the clear turn signal and side marker lenses. I feel it needs that amber aesthetically to break up the expanse of white in the front.

Really great video, fell in love with this car when i saw it on The Smoking Tire. But how is the cars weight distribution after the swap? More or less the same or even more backheavy?

Roads Untraveled Thats great, takes away a bit of that "on the edge" feeling u get from the mr2, especialy when driving in the wet.
The mr2's can be quite sketchy when doing a off-camber corners.
i dont think it would be significant enough to completely take away that on edge feeling. I have an aw11 with a 2zz swap (again a lighter engine) and it handles slighty better but it is still very much that on the edge feeling

+Brian Cornell My comparison had nothing to do with how the cars drove specifically. I was simply comparing the philosophy of the GT3 RS (free-revving, N/A, responsive engine as opposed to turbos) to that of Russ' V6 MR2 build. Very similar philosophy. That's all! As I mentioned above, I actually drove a 997 GT3 RS a week or two after we filmed this and found my comparison to be quite accurate when actually tested in practice. Thanks for watching!

great vedio. being a yota lover, i just had the thought of a v6 mr2 and searched youtube and wow. another dream car added to the list!
Looks great, nice and clean styling. A lot of MR2 SW20 are modified sooo wrong, in a way that detracts from the original lines of the car and uglifies the car with bits sticking out all over the place. But not this one, it retains that MR2 lines with the modifications. Good job.
Really nice ride, smart and effective swap, hot rodding (hope to not offend anyone) at its best. Good job!

Yes you would I'm 6ft 5in and I fit in the 2nd gen. Seat is all the way back and tilted back, I miss that car, wish I didn't get rid of it.

driving characteristics of the car are completely thrown off ---- you've taken the car and made it more likely to do what you DON'T want to do in an MR2 --- lose control of the rear end. Ruined!!!

This engine came out of a Rav4, but the Camry can be had with the same motor.
We've got a newer generaton MR2 (MR-S) in Moscow with the same motor - and we put up a video about it on our channel.

Amazing car and part of the reason I decided to put a 2GR in mine. But I decided on a Link G4+ Fury ECU, water/meth injection and now putting a GT3582r on it.

The difference to a turbo is: You do not know - you know it better before you know anything, perhaps a mix of intellect and emotion. V6 Turbo to go.

that thing would be ridiculous with the TRD blower on it. i've driven the TRD aurion (the car in australia that came with the blower stock) and they're pretty quick, the let down of it all was that they're fwd :/

great build and I like that you're not chasing power only. Most keyboard warriors have never actually driven a vehicle with 300+hp atw to begin with. Anything over 120mph on a public road is fast and anything can happen on public roads as well~keep up the great work!-)

Having real trouble here.
I've been set to replace my BMW E46 320i with an MR2 Roadster but I owned and loved an sw20 94 na for many years. I'm so tempted to find a v6 modded sw20.
I always thought the problem with the gs-ge was the lack of torque low down.
On a UK motorway it wasn't anywhere near as good overtaking as the BMW and on an A-road in the highlands of Scotland you really had to pick your moments.
Seems to me the V6 swap would fix that.
I'd miss the really peaky sportscar feel of the GS-GE but I'd probably enjoy the torque of the car more.
And that chasis and bodyshape is still about my favourite.

I bought a 2006 BMW Z4 2.5si.
It has a wonderful N52 engine that revs to 7k.
It has M suspension and goes round corners like it's on rails with the ability to provoke a bit of slide if you turn the ECT off.
It even has a great boot so my girlfriend and I can go on road trips for the week.
Really great car.
In many ways better than my MR2. I can overtake much easier and it holds the road better.
It's not as exciting though.
The sound from the six up front is amazing but it's nowhere near as intense as the 3s-ge with a K+N 54i and a 3.5 inch janspeed backbox and a higher flow sports cat.
That Mr2 sounded like a supercar. The K+N had this ability to add a delay to the sound so you heard the inital and then a second sound so it sounded more like a V8 or something.
As the revs built you got the same positive interference and harmonics so it sounded really good.
The Z4 is faster but the MR2 felt more epic to drive.
I need to own one again and convert it to a modern Toyota V6 and supercharge it.

276bhp from a 3.5l is OK.
I guess it's under stressed.
A more contemporary Porsche engine in the Boxster S 3.2 delivers the exact same.
I'd love to see a high revving v6 but I guess that's out of the question without serious engine mods. Lighter and billet everything in the head and Forged pistons. Probably forged crankshaft.
A supercharger is another possible winner idea although big power might mean the bottom end needing the same work.
I need to have a fast MR2 in my life.

+RunningStrong 2JZ I love the turbo spool myself, and with my next SW20 I plan on getting to around 300whp. Even the stock 240 crank hp was exciting for me.

The best part about getting a totally stock unmolested car is your not getting someone else's dreams and/or problems n you can now build it to your own unique setup. plus it isbt about making it the fastest but instead making it what you want it to be to suit your own individual needs.
He can still put a supercharger on it to bring it up to 350hp or so.
Between the 2grfe and the k series swaps you cant go wrong. 3sgte not so much.

hi I just bought my 91 na last week and I have thought about getting a 2gr swap. But I don’t have any of those swap experiences. Just wondering if there is any shop I can trust to get this done. Also I’m located in Vancouver too. And my last question is how much money should I be prepared getting this done? Thank you .
What do you think about the engine from 2008- TRD Aurion. Its the same engine...just supercharged. I believe it has 345 hp, 295 lb-ftWould it work?

Because I've wanted an MR2 for a long time, the cost of entry is much lower and I can easily modify it to my own personal taste (at a lower cost). Although, I would love a new Cayman as well!
Got an old MR2? K swap da bitch. Lots more mods you can do to a K engine on the cheap. Honda engines are way over engineered from the start and they love the boost. My son has a built Frankenstein swapped MR2 ( K24 bottom, K20 top ) 6 speed that na is putting down 300 to the wheels on the E juice. Turbo is next. I hope we don't die lol.
now im thinking of doing this swap in my mr2. its this or another 3rd gen 3sgte.
Under 300 whp is rather low for this car, these can be pushed to 450 bhp no probs and 600 forged, even 900 bhp heavily forged... Being lightweight makes it a totally crazy car.
